Stop marginalisation of Muslims in Ondo, Imams tell Aiyedatiwa

The League of Imams and Alfas in Ondo state has urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to stop the marginalization of Muslims in the state.

It said the recent appointments made by Aiyedatiwa fell short of the expectations of all fair-minded, just, God-fearing, and objective good people of the state including the Imams.

The Ondo Imams and Alfas said previous administrations in the state strategically and critically marginalized Muslims and reduced them to sub-human beings.

It advised Aiyedatiwa to avoid anyone, group or association, no matter their religious affiliation, that might suggest to him not to listen to the Muslim community.

The chairman of the League of Imams and Alfas in the state, Sheikh Ahmad Aladesawe, spoke when the group paid Aiyedatiwa a condolence visit.

Sheikh Aladesawe noted that all efforts to correct the lopsidedness by previous administrations proved abortive.

“We as elders are disturbed and our children are restless. Our youth are not happy, but we have to calm them with the assurance that we will meet with you and that we believe you will correct the lopsidedness.

He said: “Your excellency, the Muslim community of Ondo state is not happy with the tide of your appointments. You have made four cardinal appointments after your swearing-in, and all are people of your faith with no single Muslim. Are you saying you cannot find a Muslim in your party cerebral enough to accept even one of those appointments? Are you saying the Muslims are so short of technocrats and intellectuals who can man those offices?

“Ondo state is not a Christian state and any government that quests for peace, stability and development must recognise the religious diversity of our dear state. All the Muslim youth organisations including this August body wrote to you pleading with your excellency to pick one of our best as your deputy in order to aid you in the administration of this state but alas without any explanation or indulgence, you decided to pick your choice and jettison the over two million Muslims of Ondo State.

“The case of our children in public schools is even worse. They are being denied their basic fundamental constitutional religious rights. They are not allowed to attend the Jumu’ah, they are denied the use of hijab and the worst, they are being forced to learn Christian Religious Studies without the permission and consent of us, their parent, because the government of Ondo State has strategically refused to employ Islamic Religious knowledge teachers in the last 21years.”

The Ondo Muslim leaders also kicked against the return of schools to faith-based organisations.

They warned Aiyedatiwa that his administration might be distracted if government property were gifted to churches.

The Imams called for the declaration of a state of emergency on the recruitment of teachers for the state Primary and secondary schools including the provision of adequate members of staff for the teaching of English, French, Arabic Languages, and Islamic Religious Studies.

Aiyedatiwa explained that decisions on appointments were made based on political considerations rather than religious affiliations.

He assured that future appointments would take into account the diverse interests of the state’s population.

The governor reassured the Muslim community of ongoing efforts to address teacher shortages and ensure the recruitment of Islamic teachers.

He stated that his administration would provide all support to the contractor to ensure timely completion.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Engr. Allen Idowu, said road projects have gained momentum with contractors resuming work following the governor’s encouragement.

At the flyover site, Governor Aiyedatiwa commended the dedication of the contractors and the community to the project’s timely delivery.

He said the flyover would decongest traffic on the highway and improve road connectivity in the area.

Aiyedatiwa was accompanied by top government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi, Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Segun Omojuwa, and the Head of Service, Pastor Kayode Ogundele and officials of the Ministry of Infrastructure, led by the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Workers accuses Aiyedatiwa of spending govt funds recklessly

Workers on Ondo State Government payroll, under the aegis of Concerned Ondo Public Servants (COPS), have accused Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of spending government funds recklessly.

They accused him of diverting state resources to support his governorship ambition.

A statement by spokesperson for COPS, Segun Aderibigbe, said the governor distributed money to party members during the last stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the International Culture and Event Centre, Akure.

The statement said:  “We have closely observed the events in our beloved state since the death of our former Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who demonstrated immense care and respect for Ondo State workers.

“Although he has departed this world, we take solace in the fact that he lived a purposeful life and left an indelible mark.

“However, since Governor Aiyedatiwa assumed leadership, the business of governance seems to have been reduced to serving political interests.

“Decisions and policies are now driven solely by political ambition and self-interest. We are deeply alarmed by the governor’s spending habits and the manner in which state resources are being utilised.

“In particular, we are troubled by the sheer insensitivity displayed by promising monthly salary payments to party members from the grassroots to the state level. It is even more worrisome considering that the state has over N30 billion in unpaid gratuities.”

Aderibigbe stated that further that “Governor Aiyedatiwa distributed N100,000 to each party member who attended the stakeholders’ meeting.

“Unless the people rise up and demand accountability, this mismanagement will persist throughout the year.

“It is largely driven by the upcoming governorship election. Within this short period, we have witnessed an alarming withdrawal of government funds.

“Once again, we view the sharing of government funds to party members at the Dome as irresponsible and reckless.

“We will not sit idly by and allow Governor Aiyedatiwa to exploit the resources of our beloved state for his political agenda. We will strongly oppose him.”

Chief Press Secretary to governor Ayedatiwa, Mr. Ebenezer Adeniyan, declined comments on the allegations.

But another aide said: “They’re just seeking relevance. It’s, however, true that money was given to those that attended the stakeholders meeting, but it was meant to appreciate party members and it was without the knowledge of the governor.”

Aiyedatiwa picks deputy governor, sacks exco

The curtains were drawn yesterday on the State Executive Council set up by the former governor of Ondo State, the late Rotimi Akeredolu

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa sacked the commissioners, special advisers, Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants (SAs).

The governor also nominated a politician from Owo, hometown of his former boss, Dr. Olayide Adelami, as deputy governor.

Adelami, former  Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly, will appear today for screening before the House of Assembly. In 2020, he stepped down for the late Akeredolu ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary.

It was the first major shake-up since Ayedatiwa was inaugurated in December last year, following the passing on of Akeredolu after a protracted illness.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ebenezer Adeniyan, said the dissolved State Executive Council was with immediate effect.

It directed the former commissioners, Special advisers and other aides to hand over to the Permanent Secretaries or the most senior administrative officers in their respective offices.

The statement added: “All the affected officials are directed to hand over all government properties in their possession. The governor thanks the affected officials for their services and contributions to the development of the state.”

Aiyedatiwa’s letter on Adelami’s nomination, was read at plenary by the Speaker of House of Assembly Olamide Oladiji.

He said the governor acted in line with Section 191(3)b&c of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Oladiji said:”Dr Adelami who hails from Owo in Owo Local Government Area of the State is expected to appear before the House tomorrow (today) 25th January,2024 for screening.”

Titiloye was said to be in his office when news filtered that the executive council has been dissolved.

Thec workers gathered around the premises to watch him leave when they learnt about his sack.

Titiloye delayed leaving the office as hundreds of angry workers gathered outside.

The workers poured invectives on him  over his alleged highhandedness.

Policemen had to whisk Titiloye away in another vehicle after the tyres of his car were deflated by angry workers.

According to one of the workers, who simply gave her name as Evelyn, “Titiloye C frustrated everyone working in the ministry. We really don’t know why the late Akeredolu picked him up and left him in the office all this time.

“There was a time that we judicial workers wanted to go on strike because of his attitude towards us, but we were pacified, and we shelved it.

“Honestly, he has not been a good person. What you should be concerned about is why he was the one who was booed. There are three other commissioners in the complex, but Titiloye was booed. So, that says a lot about his days in office.”

Titiloye could not be reached for comments.
