Ajah leadership tussle: Court fines family N500,000 over delay

    …case adjourned to March 25

A Lagos State High Court in Ajah on Tuesday imposed a fine of N500,000 on the Olumegbon family for delaying proceedings in a suit concerning the traditional rulership of the Ajah community.

The case involves the Olumegbon family and the Ojupon and Ogunsemo ruling houses of Ajah.

Mr. Alaba Okukpe, who said he has been a counsel to the Olumegbon family for 35 years, announced his withdrawal from the case, citing unresolved issues.

He noted that any new counsel must adhere to professional ethics.

The family’s new lawyer, Qudus Mumuni, stated that his immediate task is to consult with the family and resolve representation issues before the next hearing.

Meanwhile, Richard Ahonaruogho (SAN), counsel to the Ojupon and Ogunsemo ruling houses, accused the Olumegbon family of using delay tactics and requested a fine of N1.5 million for stalling the trial.

“We should have progressed beyond the trial stage, but the Olumegbon family has been using changes in legal representation to obstruct justice,” Ahonaruogho said.

Justice Olubukola Aigbokhaevbo, while ruling, fined the Olumegbon family N500,000 to be paid before the next hearing, emphasizing the need to prevent further delays.

“I encourage the lawyers and family members to meet and resolve representation issues to ensure progress,” the judge added.

The case was adjourned to March 25, 2025, for trial.
