Ambode okays flyover for Ajah, Abule-Egba

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the construction of flyover for two of the state’s high-density traffic zones, Ajah round about and Abule-Egba junction.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde, said the two projects were approved by the State Executive Council and had been duly awarded to contractors for immediate action.

He said the projects would be completed within 16 months as part of the governor’s ongoing road infrastructure projects across the state. He said the Ajah round about would be undertaken simultaneously with the rehabilitation of Freedom Road in Lekki.

According to him, the Ajah flyover would have a solar-powered signalised intersection to ease traffic.

He added that the upgrade of Freedom Road would ease traffic considerably for vehicles using the Third Roundabout to connect Lekki through the Admiralty Way.

“The construction of the reinforced concrete dual-carriage flyover bridge at Abule Egba junction will equally bring succour to millions of commuters using the Lagos -Abeokuta Expressway daily when completed,” he said.

Ayorinde said the Abule -Egba flyover would also have signalised intersection under it to service Oko-Oba and other link roads within the axis.

He said that the state government had also awarded contracts for the rehabilitation and upgrade of strategic arterial/inner roads in Epe Local Government Area of the state.

  • Peculiar Saints Orphanage relocates to Ajah

A charity organisation Peculiar Saints Orphanage is moving to Ajah, Lagos, in its expansion bid.

Its proprietor, Mrs Olamide Turner,  said: “Right now, we run a normal orphanage because we don’t have the facilities to run a home for kids with disabilities. In that our permanent site, we have a sick bay, all the rooms are ensuite so we can change from a normal home to a home for people with disabilities and challenging behaviour.”

The proprietor, who became an orphan as a child, said she got interested in running an orphanage after working at the Lauryn Hall Home which caters for children with disabilities and challenging behaviours in the UK where she was based.

“Even while I was in the UK, whenever I come to Nigeria, I ask of old hospices and I work there on compassionate grounds. That was where I started from in Nigeria. Presently, we are trying to get partners. We have people that are sponsoring our children in school before they go out for adoption. I also have a board and the members are very supportive,” she said.

Since inception in 2012, 28 children have passed through Peculiar Saints Orphanage, according to Turner. “Our own mission is not to keep kids at the orphanage permanently. We want to settle them in homes. Our home is like a transit point for children. We adopt them out, of course through the Ministry of Youths and Social Development. So far about 10 of our children have been adopted by homes in Nigeria and abroad,” she also revealed.

  • Ajah traders stages rally for security

Worried by the spate of violent attacks by hoodlums in Ajah community, a Lagos suburb, especially last weekend’s violence that left no fewer than four persons dead with scores injured, some traders, under the auspices of the Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men of Ajah Ultra Modern Market, yesterday staged a rally.

Commending the Lagos State Government for its intervention in the crisis, they urged police authorities to ensure adequate security in the area.

The placard-carrying traders, singing solidarity songs, stormed the Ajah market as early as 11 am for the rally. They bemoaned their fate in the hands of the hoodlums.

Their leader, who is also the Baba Oja of Ajah market, Alhaji Rasaq Odunlami: “We traders have been the target whenever violence erupts as a result of supremacy battle between the hoodlums, which usually results in looting, robbery and killing.”

He commended the steps taken so far by the Lagos State Government and the police towards containing the crisis.

“The market committee and entire traders of the market express profound appreciation to Governor Raji Fashola for the security beef-up in the market and its environs. We also thank the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Umar Manko for providing adequate security in Ajah and the arrest of leaders of the warring factions. We urge the state government to find a lasting solution to the perennial breakdown of law and order in Ajah and its environs,” he said.
