  • Farioli leaves Ajax after end-of-season title collapse

Farioli leaves Ajax after end-of-season title collapse

Head coach Francesco Farioli has left Ajax in the wake of an end-of-season collapse that cost them the Eredivisie title.

Ajax were top of the Dutch top flight with a nine-point lead with seven games to go but on Sunday ended up finishing a point behind champions PSV Eindhoven.

Italian Farioli, 36, leaves after one season, having joined the club on a three-year contract last summer.

“The management and I have the same goals for the future of Ajax, but we have different visions and timeframes about the way we should work and operate to achieve those goals,” he said.

“Given these differences in the principles and foundations of the project, I feel deep in my heart that this is the best moment to part ways.”

Ajax technical director Alex Kroes said, despite missing out on the title, the club had achieved its aim of qualifying for the Champions League under Farioli and found his departure “incredibly disappointing”.

“Francesco also played a key role in enhancing the high-performance culture at Ajax, for which we are extremely grateful,” said Kroes.

“This summer was already set to be a challenging transfer window, and it has now become even more so. It is up to us to ensure that a strong new coaching team is in place when pre-season preparations begin on 26 June.”

  • Ajax  set for comeback after two seasons of turmoil

Ajax  set for comeback after two seasons of turmoil

Ajax Amsterdam are within touching distance of securing the league championship in the Netherlands, putting behind them a horror two-season spell where they briefly flirted with relegation and suffered embarrassing setbacks.

A nine-point lead over second-placed PSV Eindhoven, with five rounds left of the Eredivisie season, sees Ajax on the brink of a return to glory with a record-extending 37th title.

Ajax need seven points out of a possible 15 from their last five fixtures to return to the summit of Dutch football.

They could clinch the title as early as April 27 when they host Sparta Rotterdam but would need to win away at fourth-placed Utrecht on Sunday and see other results go their way, if they are to set up a home celebration.

A bold gamble on 34-year-old Italian coach Francesco Farioli at the start of the season looks to have paid off as he returned lustre to the ailing giant, prioritising rotation with 39 players used this campaign, improving fitness and tightening the defence.

While he has been criticised for dispensing with the fabled ‘Total Football’ approach, Ajax have won 13 of their last 14 league games to long overtake defending champions PSV in the title race.

“We have five finals left to play,” Farioli said after last weekend’s away victory at Willem II.

“It was a very important victory. With it, we’ve at least secured a top-three finish. That means we’ve qualified for the preliminary round of the Champions League, which is crucial for the club.”

Ajax last won the title in 2022, after which their coach Erik ten Hag left for Manchester United and many key players were sold, precipitating a period of unprecedented turmoil for the former European champions.

While Ten Hag’s replacement Alfred Schreuder made a perfect start with six successive league wins, results quickly tapered off and a 6-1 home loss to Napoli in the Champions League saw a drop in form and turmoil in the changing room.

Ajax went on a record seven-match winless streak, which saw Schreuder fired, but they still ended the season third and won the Dutch Cup.

Starting last season with the unheralded Maurice Steijn in charge, Ajax had hopes of bouncing back after spending some 100 million euros ($114 million) in the transfer market. But after three months, the new coach was gone as they languished in last place in the Dutch league for the first time.

Two months later, they were tumbled out of the Dutch Cup by amateur side USV Hercules with the 3-2 loss hailed as the biggest upset in the competition’s 126-year history.

Ajax worked their way out of trouble but not before suffering a 6-0 loss to Feyenoord, ending the season fifth, 35 points adrift of champions PSV.

Farioli’s appointment looked risky, but his rebuild has been swift, if not totally convincing.

“They do win, but as an Ajax supporter you never know which way it’s going to go,” said former star Ronald de Boer.

But John Van ‘t Schip, who was caretaker coach last season, said Ajax deserved to take this season’s title.

“It’s just great what Farioli has done. If you can beat Feyenoord and PSV twice, then, in my eyes, you are the deserved champion.”

  • Champions League: Osimhen down plays Lille’s 3-0 loss to Ajax

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen believes he and his Lille teammates have learnt useful lessons following their 3-0 defeat in the Champions league by Ajax on Tuesday.

Osimhen, who was in action for the entire duration of the match remained optimistic that hope still lies ahead.

The 20 year apparently not in the mood for long talk after the match simply told his teammates and supporters alike “lesson learned, we move”.

The former VfL Wolfsburg ace had prior to the match revealed that the entire team was on fire during training.

Unfortunately the zeal to pull a win or run away with vital point failed to materialise for the hard fighting Nigerian and his teammates who will now be hoping to remedy the situation when Ajax come visiting.

Osimhen comes close to scoring during tie against Ajax

Business minded Ajax seized control of the battle of Johan Cruijff Arena on Tuesday as early as the 18th minute with a goal from Quincy Anthon with Álvarez Velázquez and Nicolás Tagliafico increasing the tally in the 50th and 62nd minutes respectively.

Ajax maintained 56 to 44% possession ratios in Tuesday’s match with seven shots on target against five by Lille.

Ajax came into Tuesday’s match fresh from a 4-1 victory over Heerenveen in the Dutch league while Lille on their part had recorded a 2-1 home victory over Angers SCO prior in the French Ligue 1

  • Van de Beek gives Ajax edge over Tottenham in Champions League semi-final

Ajax Amsterdam’s Donny van de Beek grabbed an early goal to secure a precious 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old struck in the 15th minute to give Ajax a crucial away goal and leave Spurs facing a daunting task in Amsterdam if they are to reach the final for the first time.

Ajax, having already knocked out Real Madrid and Juventus en route to their first semi-final in Europe’s elite competition since 1997, were too pacey for a labouring home side.

They were especially enterprising in the first half during which they could have put the tie to bed.

Tottenham did improve after the break but Ajax defended their lead diligently to restrict the home attack and almost scored a second goal late on when David Neres hit the post. (Reuters/NAN)

Man United, Ajax through to Europa League final

Manchester United survived a nervy last few minutes to reach their first Europa League final after a 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo.

Marouane Fellaini had given United a first half lead with a header but Facundo Roncaglia gave Celta hope with a header five minutes from time.

Roncaglia and United’s Eric Bailly were sent off on 88 minutes after a clash before John Guidetti missed an open goal with the last kick of the match that would have sent the Spaniards into the Stockholm final.

Dutch giants Ajax secured their ticket to the Europa League final on Thursday despite losing 3-1 away to Lyon in their semi-final second leg.
