  • Ondo 2020: I have no favourite governorship aspirant, says Boroffice

The senator representing Ondo North senatorial district, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice on Friday said he had nobody in mind as governorship hopeful for the 2020 election in the state.

Besides, he affirmed that he was not interested in the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as being speculated.

The lawmaker denied the claims by some governorship aspirants in the Ondo APC that he had endorsed their governorship bids.

Through a statement from its spokesman, Kayode Fakuyi, the ranking senator said he was conversant with how some governorship aspirants have been making frantic efforts to woo and lobby prominent leaders within his political structure to support their governorship aspirations since his decision not to run for governorship position.

It said  “First, Prof. Boroffice believes the intense jostling for APC governorship ticket in Ondo State is too early. Having had an unimpressive outing in the 2019 general elections, this is the time for all leaders, stakeholders and party members to unite for genuine reconciliation and re-energize the party.

“Instructively, while it is true that the lawmaker has no intention to vie for APC governorship ticket in 2020, it is untrue that he has endorsed any governorship aspirant. Hence, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice has no preferred aspirant.

“Furthermore, all political associates and supporters of Boroffice in Ondo State are urged to keep faith with the APC and the process of revitalizing the party in Ondo State”

The lawmaker urged them to exercise patience until such an appropriate time that they would all sit together to take collective decision on the next governorship election in Ondo State.

  • Row over withdrawal of petition against Boroffice at Election Tribunal

The lawmaker representing Ondo North Senatorial District, Prof Ajayi Boroffice has said that the state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu was not involved in the final withdrawal of the case at the Ondo state Election Tribunal as being reported in the media.

It would be recalled that the petition filed before the State Election Petition Tribunal on behalf of Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN) against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over absence of its logo on the ballot papers used for Ondo North senatorial election had been withdrawn by the party.

A statement through his Press Secretary, Kayode Fakuyi described the claim as false, stressing that MPN did not sponsor any candidate for Ondo North senatorial election conducted on February 23.

It said” this fact is contained in Form CFO 002 C (II) that was signed by both the National Chairman and National Secretary of MPN. The form CF 002 C (II) was submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the 18th of October, 2018.

“This fact also explains the absence of MPN’s logo on the ballot papers used for Ondo North senatorial election.

“Secondly, MPN did not actually file petition against INEC and Senator  Boroffice. It was the senatorial candidate of Action Alliance (AA) for Ondo North, Tunji Abayomi, who sponsored the case on behalf of MPN without the authorisation of the National leadership of MPN.

“Instructively, Abayomi of the AA could not have sponsored the case without the support of his political leader, Governor Akeredolu.

“From the above-stated facts, it is clear Akeredolu did not play any such role like role of arbiter in the resolution of the MPN to discontinue a case that was initiated and instituted on its behalf without its authorisation.

“Furthermore, If the media wishes to attribute role to Akeredolu on the matter, such role should be confined to the sponsorship of the case”.

The statement encouraged the media to always maintain its cherished tradition of credible broadcasting and reportage of issues of public importance.

  • Ondo APC lost to internal wrangling, says Boroffice

The lawmaker representing Ondo North Senatorial District, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice, who was just re-elected to the Upper Chamber for the third term, on Monday attributed the ‘unimpressive’ outcome of the election in the state to overwhelming crack within the ruling party.

He noted the division in the party became noticeable shortly after the 2016 governorship primaries.

Out of the three incumbent APC Senators that contested for the election, only Boroffice was reelected.

He scored 53,199 votes to defeat his closest opponent, Dr Tunji Abayomi, who was formerly an APC stalwart but pulled out of the party when he lost its senatorial ticket and eventually become AA senatorial flag bearer, scoring 43,100.

Abayomi was alleged to be funded by the state government against APC.

It led to a protest in Abuja by members of the APC Mandate Group, who pleaded with the national leadership of the party to caution those perpetrating anti-party activities within its fold.

However, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu at every occasion denied sponsoring AA.

Sources hinted that supporters of APC were poorly mobilized for the last elections, a development observers believed also contributed to its dismal outing.

Boroffice, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Science& Technology said:” I took the verdict of the last Saturday election with mixed feelings. We lost to PDP but my people in Ondo North gave me the mandate to retain my seat there in spite of all odds.

“It is so painful but I thank God I delivered my area to President Muhammadu Buhari, who is a credible leader.

“Although I was all alone doing my campaigns and I appreciate my supporters and people in Ondo North for reposing confidence in me.”

He also blamed the APC woes during the last election in the state on inept party structure and malfunctioning state party executives that believed in themselves alone.

The Asiwaju of Akoko hailed the smooth conduct of the election, while appreciating the security operatives, INEC Officials and electorate for their professionalism and maturity.

He pledged to influence the Senate on how to tackle the poor road situation in Akoko during the next Assembly.

Besides, he expressed the need for total overhauling of the APC structure in the state for the party to remain relevant.

It said “It is instructive to note the coordinated attacks on APC members have been linked to the supporters of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

“At this point, if the brazen intimidation and unprovoked assault on APC members persist, Senator Ajayi Boroffice cannot guarantee that there won’t be breakdown of law and order.

“Finally, the Inspector General of Police is urged to provide adequate protection for APC members in Ondo North senatorial district. The Police should immediately assume full control of the internal security machinery of Ondo North senatorial district and Ondo State in general”.

  • Boroffice to IGP: Probe assassination attempt on my life

The last Saturday’s assassination attempt on the life of a lawmaker representing Ondo North Senatorial District, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice in Owo has continued to generate ripples among the All Progressives Congress (APC) fold in the state.

The ruling party in a statement by its spokesman,Alex Kalejaye said Boroffice’s attackers were not APC members.

But a statement by Boroffice’s media unit insisted that some aides of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu have cases to answer with the IGP’s crack team over  the assassination attempt.

The statement reads “Following the failed and foiled assassination attempt on the life of Senator Ajayi Boroffice on Saturday in Owo, the media unit of the senator is concerned that while the Ade Adetimehin-led faction of All Progressives Congress in Ondo State has not deem it right to condemn the attack, the faction has issued two contradictory statements on the incident within 24 hours.

“In one breath, the faction through its spokesman, Kalejaye, confirmed that some aggrieved members of the party in Owo invaded the venue of the campaign. In another press statement, the faction through same spokesman said the assailants are not party members. The faction should stop undermining the image of APC with its seeming confusion.

“Also, it is our considered view that the statements credited to the Commissioner for information in Ondo State and the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Governor on the matter are watery innuendos. They neither cleared, nor disassociated their boss”.

Boroffice’s spokesman, Kayode Fakuyi said the insinuation raised by  Adetimehin-led faction that the attack on Senator Ajayi Boroffice was stage-managed by the supporters of the senator was most unfortunate.

He noted that supporters of the lawmaker have never stage-managed such incident in the past, stressing that they have no tendency to stage-manage such incident.

According to him “They have no reason whatsoever to stage-manage such incident. The supporters of the senator could not have stage-managed an attack that was coordinated by appointees of the governor.

“It is quite daft for any group to insinuate supporters of the senator mobilised armed thugs to attack themselves. If such lie was invented with the hope of diverting and distracting the course of investigation, the lie has failed to achieve its objectives.

He said preliminary investigation on the attack revealed that the attack was coordinated by appointees of Governor Akeredolu.

Fakuyi alleged that the duo of Senior Special Adviser (SSA)on Security to the Governor, Alhaji Jimoh Dojumo and Special Adviser to the Governor on Natural Resources, Lawal Fatai Olusina have cases to answer with the Inspector General of Police’s crack team on the incident.

He urged security agencies in the state to be on the alert, stressing that the greatest threats to peace in the state seed the people with the responsibilities to protect lives and properties of the citizenry.

  • No plot can stop my re-election bid, says Boroffice

…we will screen only authentic members – APC

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Ondo State,Prof Ajayi Boroffice on Wednesday said the verbal attacks between two factions of the party in the state over screening of aspirants and other related issues was illogical.

The lawmaker representing Ondo North Senatorial District has however undergone screening exercise for the forthcoming primary election of the APC.

A statement through his Press Secretary,Kayode Fakuyi said Boroffice had received clearance certificate to participate in the senatorial direct primary election scheduled for October in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The statement said “In line with the approval of direct primaries for Ondo State by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC, Senator Boroffice is upbeat and ready for the election. Indeed, no plot can stop the re-election bid of Senator Ajayi Boroffice.

However, the ruling party through its Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro maintained that only those who brought their forms through proper channel would participate in the screening exercise.

It noted all bonafide members of the party were on the same page with its leadership on the coming primary elections.

The party said ” Every aspirant who has bought forms from the right place will participate in the screening exercise.

“It is the right of every member to go through the whole process, the aspirants that are authentically cleared would definitely be eligible to contest the primary elections in the state under the platform of the APC”.

There had been a frosty relationship between Senator Boroffice and Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu over the fall-out of 2016 election won by the latter.

The leadership of the party alleged that the lawmaker worked against the interest of the party during the last governorship election.

Besides, while the party insisted on indirect primary system to pick the National Assembly aspirants, Boroffice supported direct primary which was endorsed by the national leadership of the party.
