    • INEC posts over 98% of election results on IREV

    • APC candidate ahead in most LGAs

With 98% of the results of yesterday’s governorship election in Ondo State posted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on its Result Viewing (IREV) portal last night, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa appeared to be coasting home to victory.

Figures independently tallied from the IREV portal put Aiyedatiwa, who is the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, in an unassailable lead.

Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) trailed far behind in the second position.

Apparently sensing his imminent defeat, Ajayi, a former deputy governor of the state, had expressed displeasure at the conduct of the election in his home town of Kiribo in Ese-Odo Local Government Area, soon after voting yesterday.

He said it took more than 10 minutes for the INEC BVAS to capture him.

He however went on to win his booth – Apoi Ward11, Unit 004, Kiribo with 194 votes against three for Ayedatiwa.

The camp of the APC went into victory mode as soon as the results began streaming in. By 5.15pm, the National Secretary of the party, Dr. Ajibola Basiru, was on his X handle @Dr.SRJ_ with a message to his followers: “Our mood in Akure now!!! Alhamdulilah.”Attached to the text was his picture, smiling. The election was generally peaceful across the state.

Voting materials arrived many polling units before 8am. INEC said on X that “of the 3,933 Polling Units (PUs) across the 203 Wards in the 18 local government areas (LGAs) of Ondo State, 3,823 (97 per cent) opened by 8.30am.

“The remaining 110 PUs opened between 8.31am and 10am.”

Security was tight, but voters’ turnout appeared low despite efforts by some communities in mobilising natives to come home and vote. The Ilaje in particular reached out to their sons and daughters to come home and vote for Aiyedatiwa.

As early as 6am, the jetty at Ugbonla was jam packed by voters who heeded the come-home-and-vote call.

There are no access roads to many Ilaje communities including Obenla, hometown of Aiyedatiwa.

A business owner in the area said the Ilaje were united in ensuring victory for the governor.

“We have never had it like this before. People are coming from Delta, Edo, Lagos and other parts of the world to come and vote for our son,” he said.

A retired Army Captain, Harry Akinfoyewa, said they were happy to vote their son as governor.

“It is because of events of today that this jetty is filled. It is because our son is contesting today.

“On an ordinary day, you would not see this kind of crowd here. I am going to vote in the riverine area because of this election.”

At Obenla Ward 4, polling units 5 and 6, traditional ruler of the town, Oba Kolawole Andrew, Olubaki 1, Olubo of Obenla, led his subjects to the polling units as early as 8:10am.

Oba Kolawole, who voted at about 9am arrived the polling unit as early as 8am. He said he did not expect INEC officials to arrive the polling units as at the time they did.

The Obenla monarch said all communities in Ilaje wanted Aiyedatiwa to emerge victorious.

He said: “INEC officials arrived early. I didn’t expect them when they arrived with their materials.

“This election is good in terms of preparation by INEC. Moreover the whole area is calm. The electoral officials came on time.

“Aiyedatiwa and I vote in the same polling unit. We, as leaders, want him to win.

“We want Aiyedatiwa to develop all communities in Ugboland. Our immediate need is embankment, especially sea incursion. We want it solved.”

Two former governorship aspirants of the APC, Chief Olusola Oke and Dr. Soji Ehinlanwo, said that the Ijaws and Apoi were in support of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s continued stay in office.

Chief Oke, who spoke shortly while monitoring the election in Ilaje Local Government, said the result of the election would be beautiful.

Oke said the overwhelming support for Aiyedatiwa was because the Ilaje have been yearning for leadership since 1976.

He said there was no resistance or credible opposition in the state.

“You can understand the joy of the people. The direction of the election is well known.

“It is a new broom that sweeps clean.”

Ehinlanwo, on his part, said it was not surprising for the unprecedented huge turnout of voters in Ilaje.

“Today is an important day. It is a day to make the right choice for the greater Ilaje and greater Ondo State, for our state to be prosperous. Let us make the right choice.”

Business mogul, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC- Ondo South) described the conduct of the election as free, fair and credible.

Ibrahim told reporters after voting at Igbotako, Okitipupa Local Government Area, that the APC would “definitely win this election.”

He said: “I voted for my party as a loyal member under President Bola Tinubu and our respected national party chairman, Ganduje, and I can say that definitely, APC will win this election.”

Governor Aiyedatiwa, who voted at Unit 5, urged all candidates to accept the outcome of the election.

He said he would accept the results if the election was conducted in a free and fair manner.

He said:” I am at an advantage to win because of the work I have done in the last 10 months. I was the only candidate that covered the entire state.

“I felt the people, I listened to them and the people were excited at my appearance. I believe they will translate the love to vote today.”

He eventually won his polling booth with 128 votes, leaving three for PDP’s Ajayi.

Results of the election posted by INEC yesterday showed that the APC candidate performed well across the 18 local government areas of the state with the exception of Idanre where the PDP did well.

Ajayi’s running mate, Festus Akingbaso, is from Idanre

His constituents gave the PDP 187 votes in his Polling Unit 8, Ward 2, AladeOkun while APC got 46.

Agboola to INEC: ‘We can’t trust you, system has been compromised’

Ajayi dismissed INEC’s handling of the election in his area.

His words: “The system is not perfect and there are lots of complainants here and there.

“If INEC cannot successfully organise an election in just one state, then you must know that we are running into anarchy.

“I think it is deliberate on the part of INEC, on the part of the Resident Electoral Commission (REC).

“And we have said it several times that we don’t trust Barr. Oluwatoyin Babalola (REC); that this woman cannot be fair.

“The system is compromised and we have series of calls made by everybody. People are complaining of vote buying, BVAS problem. It is a very shameful exercise.

“And I think people should call on the INEC chairman to resign if he cannot do the job. He should just resign.

“It is totally compromised. This is sad and Nigerians are not happy. Here, it is peaceful to some extent.”

    Yiaga alleges vote buying

One of the observer missions, Yiaga Africa, alleged that the election was marred by vote buying.

Yiaga Africa said reports from its monitors showed vote buying in several polling units across the state.

Chairman of the 2024 Ondo Election Mission, Ezenwa Nwagwu, said vote buying was becoming a permanent feature of Nigeria’s electoral process.

Nwagwu, who commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for apprehending an alleged vote buyer in St. Stephen Polling Unit, said political parties and candidates should be held accountable for the negative trends observed in the country’s elections.

He insisted that political parties could not distance themselves from the persistent issue of vote buying that continued to mar the electoral processes.

Why Ondo election was largely successful – Observer group

The Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI), an election monitoring group, said adequate preparation by INEC was a factor in the successful conduct of the governorship election in Ondo State.

The Board Chairperson of KDI, Dr. Abiola Afolabi, stated this after the assessment of the election.

“Our field observers reported significant early arrival of election materials at the polling units, indicating the well-preparedness of INEC on logistical movement.

“We commend the relative professionalism and adequacy of policing in the Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

“We noted that the election process has been largely peaceful, with no major incidents leading to a breakdown of law and order in the early hours,” he said.

Afolabi, however, acknowledged that while poll workers arrived in many polling units early, there were isolated cases of late commencement of polls at certain locations.

“Of the 275 reports received from the field, 33.09 per cent indicated late commencement

“Observations indicate that election officials arrived at polling stations between 6:30am. and 8:00 am,, while voting commenced in those locations of the 33 per cent reported, between 8:45am and 10:00a.m.” he said.

Afolabi added that KDI observed that the enforcement of restriction of movement and roadblocks by security personnel was handled professionally.

He said the security personnel seamlessly allowed movement of essential workers in most of the local government areas.

Afolabi said that Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) functioned very well in the election adding that the pockets of incidence reported were quickly resolved making voting to hold peacefully.

According to him, the KDI’s Election Day Data Room received 20 reports of incidents of violence among which only that in Polling Unit 3, Ward 5 in ldanre Local Government led to disruption of the polling units.

The next step in the electoral process is the collation of the results from the wards at the local government secretariats after which the LG results will be taken to the state capital Akure for final collation and formal announcement of the winner.

  • Aiyedatiwa, Ajayi, others sign peace accord

Aiyedatiwa, Ajayi, others sign peace accord

Candidates of political parties seeking to be elected Ondo Governor in next Saturday’s governorship polls have signed the peace accord.

Among candidates that signed the peace accord were Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Agboola Ajayi, Olugbena Edema, Dr. Abbas Mimiko, amongst others.

They signed the peace accord in Akure and supervised by the National Peace Committee headed by General Abdulsalam Abubakar.

Abubakar urged all politicians who signed the accord to fully commit themselves and their parties to the letter and spirit of the accord.

The former Head of State urged them to shun violence and intimidation as well as demonstrate the spirit of sportsmanship.

He called on all stakeholders to work assiduously in their capacities to ensure that peace reigned supreme during the election and that Ondo state off-cycle election sets a precedent for other off-cycle elections to emulate.

According to him: “While I commend INEC, for the work done so far, | call on them to continuously live up to their responsibilities in ensuring that eligible voters exercise their franchise peacefully and that the remaining electoral processes are credible free, and fair.

“It is the sincere hope of the National Peace Committee that the Ondo state elections will be free, fair, credible, and peaceful.”

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbedokun, said a total 43,157 security personnel would be deployed for the Ondo election.

Egbedokun said the Nigeria Police would deploy a total of 34,657 personnel to the polling units, wards/LGA collation centers as well as other strategic locations.

He said 8,500 personnel would be deployed from the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Correctional Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

The IGP stated that threat analysis of flash/vulnerable points in Ondo State was being constantly reviewed to enable the Force deploy both human and material assets effectively.

According to him, “The Police will timeously provide enough Armoured Personnel Carrier (APCs), Trucks, Patrol Vehicles, Buses for covert operations, Ambulances, Helicopters, Drones, K9 and anti-riot equipment to complement the strength of Ondo State Command.”

National Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mamoud Yakubu, said the electoral body has taken measures to address election day challenges, especially the perennial challenge of logistics.

Prof. Yakubu said there would be remarkable improvement in election day logistics.

He said, “Voters in Ondo State should also expect to see similar improvement in result management.

” I will not be tired of appealing to political parties and candidates to note that your signatures on the Peace Accord document alone will not guarantee a peaceful election.

‘ The Peace Accord is not an automated, self-activating document. Your commitment to its implementation is critical. Therefore, as you sign the Peace Accord, you should commit yourselves to its implementation and pass the message to your supporters at all levels for compliance.”

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa pleaded with all stakeholders to play by the game and stay true to the peace accord they have signed.

“We will all abide by the tenets of the peace accord. Election will come and Ondo State will remain and be peaceful. After the election it should be peaceful and that can only be if we abide by the outcome of the election.”

Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke has urged Osun indigenes in Ondo State to embark in aggressive door-to-door campaign for the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Agboola Ajayi.

Adeleke spoke in Akure where the Ipinle Osun endorsed Ajayi as their preferred candidate in next week’s governorship election.

The Osun Governor said Ajayi would replicate successes recorded in other PDP States in the Southwest region.

He urged the Osun indigenes not to be afraid to cast and protect their votes.

According to him: “I am happy to talk to my people. There is so much suffering and hunger but the light has come in the person of Ajayi.

“I charge all of you to start campaigning for Ajayi. Good things have come to Ondo State. Work for the emergence of Ajayi.

“I am here to support Ajayi. I am telling my people to vote Ajayi. You know what is going on in my five-point agenda. Retired Pensioners are getting paid and that is how it is going to happen in Ondo

“Go from door to door and campaign about issues. PDP is a progressive party. Go out and vote. Stay with your vote. Do not be afraid.

Ajayi said the way the people voted for the PDP in Osun ‘is how they will do in Ondo.’

    Ajayi, Aiyedatiwa clash at debate

Leading candidates in next week’s governorship election in Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Agboola Ajayi, clashed at the governorship debate organised by Channels Television at the International and Cultural Event Centre, Akure.

Both candidates engaged in fireworks as they unveiled what they planned to do in areas of economy, agriculture, security and other sectors. Ajayi challenges Aiyedatiwa to a street walk to test their street popularity and general acceptance.

On local government elections, Aiyedatiwa said the state electoral body would continue to conduct local government elections until the law is amended saying the APC conducted free and fair elections at the local councils.

Ajayi, on his part, said Aiyedatiwa currently operate an illegal local government system as declared null and void by the court. He accused the governor of destroying the legacy of their late boss, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, especially the Amotekun corps and promised to strengthen the security outfit if elected as governor.

The PDP candidate chided Aiyedatiwa for not improving the economy and the education sector.

Ajayi who accused Governor Aiyedatiwa of collecting N1.2 billion monthly as security votes, said there was no significant improvement in the state’s security situation. He said: “We will resist the use of Amotekun during the coming election. When I become governor, I will strengthen Amotekun but will not use it during any election. I challenge the governor to make public how much he’s collecting if he says I am lying about the N1.2 billion figure.

“The poor people in Ondo State are more in numbers. What we rely on in Ondo is the collection of salary. The cocoa industry of the state has not positively impacted the economy of the state.

“No single palm oil factory in Ondo State. When I become governor, I will establish Sunshine Glass Factory to replace the defunct Oluwa Glass.

“We will also invest in our local airport, which is a cargo airport, to boost agriculture and food security for the state. There is no single tractor in the state, so the government is not prepared to invest in agriculture.

“There is no single development in Ilaje communities and the governor is from the area. When I am governor of Ondo, in one or two years, I will initiate policies that will drive the cocoa industry.

“As governor, I’ll cancel the Ministry of Local because it is criminal not to allow local as their affair. Ondo State workers will be happier when I pay N76,000. I know how the administration works better than Aiyedatiwa. I have been a local government chairman, member of the House of Representatives, deputy governor, and acting governor.

“The problem we have in education is lack of data. We do not have accurate data. How do we one teacher and Governor Lucky expect the output to be ok. We used to enjoy free textbooks. What are they doing is nothing.

I am a comfortable man. I am not in government to make money. There will be free education in Ondo.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, on his part, said Ayaji has different dates of birth on his certificates.

He said all leaders of the PDP have defected to the APC.

The Ondo Governor said the safety and security of the people would be his primary mandate even as he vowed that the economy of the state, particularly agriculture, would be given priority.

Aiyedatiwa said Ajayi lacked experience in governance adding that his administration was already taking advantage of the power devolution by the federal government.

He said the Amotekun Corps, was ready to transform into a state police. He said: “Amotekun can trace crime to its root cause and the corps is ready to transform into a state police. There is nothing like N1.2 billion security votes. It’s a lie from the pit of hell. Security vote is a Security issue and I can’t reveal it.

  • I’ll prioritise security if elected, says Ajayi

I’ll prioritise security if elected, says Ajayi

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Agboola Ajayi said, he will make the provision of security his major priority, if he elected as governor.

Ajayi, a former deputy governor in the state, who made this promise in the Iju and Ita-Ogbolu in Akure North Local Government Area, also promised to promote policies that would agriculture.

He promised to strengthen the security network agency known as Amotekun to end the criminal activities of bandits in rural areas, particularly kidnapping.

Ajayi lamented over the state of backwardness of the Sunshine State and expressed his determination to change the narrative of the state for the better if elected.

He said, “We are going to strengthen the Amotekun; we will create forest guards that would work together with the Amotekun Corps in all the forests across the state. We will end up kidnapping, and our farmers will go to farms with peace of mind. We will empower the farmers.

“I was one of those who created Amotekun, so we have ways to reshape it. We will end kidnapping in this state, and our farmers will be empowered so that there will be sufficient food across the state.

“If I get to power, we will form policies to develop the state; within 10 months, we will change things for the better. We know how to run the government.

“We won’t be wasting time before we kick-start our programmes. APC has destroyed the country; they have caused hunger, so let us vote for PDP. I will ensure free and affordable education. We will employ more teachers.

“Governor Aiyedatiwa is collecting N1.2 billion in security votes monthly; I don’t need that much money for security. From that money, I will take about N600 million from it to create employment. If there are employment opportunities for the youths, crimes would reduce drastically.”

The Director-General of the PDP Campaign Organisation, Clement Faboyede, an engineer, solicited the support of the people.

He urged them to go and collect their Permanent Voters Cards to enable them exercise their franchise during the election.

“Please, go and get your PVCs to enable you to vote to chase the APC out of power. This is the only power you have to send them away (APC).

Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi, has expressed optimism that the crisis rocking the national leadership of the party would affect his chances of winning the polls.

Ajayi said the PDP in Ondo remained united.

Speaking in an interview in Akure, Hon Ajayi said there was nothing special about the PDP crisis that would affect the Ondo polls.

According to him, “Do I want to be president of Nigeria now? I am not interested in that nor do I want to be the national chairman of the party. I want to be Governor of Ondo State.

“Every politics is local. Here in Ondo State, we are together and united in the PDP. The crisis is part of politics. They will disagree, factions here and there but at the end of the day we will come to a round table. We will channel a common course that will benefit the country.

“APC is having its crisis. Ondo State is where I want to govern and our people are together. We are together here in Ondo State.”

Ajayi also dismissed insinuation that the outcome of the Edo election would inspire APC victory in Ondo State.

He said Ondo state people would decide who wins the November 16th polls.

The former Deputy Governor said the party was prepared for the flag-off of its campaign rally on Tuesday.

He lambasted Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for denying the PDP’s use of Democracy Park for the rally.

He said: “This is Ondo State. This is not Edo territory. Ondo people will decide who will be their Governor. They will elect who will be their governor. It is not Edo, Our people will decide who will lead them.

“We are prepared for the flag-off except that we can see some parochial and narrow-minded decisions of the incumbent government. The governor decided not to release the Democracy Park earlier agreed on that they will give us. They just denied us that venue. It is embarrassing when his fellow governors come to town and he deprives them of getting a comfortable venue to do their programme.

“It is not about the governor or any other person. If his Colleagues are coming to Ondo state, he can welcome them or host them for lunch. They are here to talk to their party members. This is not Ondo state. We are not used to this. The late governor allowed the PDP to use it. Past Governors have never behaved like this. He should retrace his decision.

“It is sad and embarrassing to us in Ondo State. Wait and see the turnout. It is not about the PDP. Everybody is interested in who is going to be the next governor. The PDP, APC, and traders students. This is a mass election. They are ready and will vote for candidates of their choice and the votes will count.”

  • 70 percent PCOS cases go undiagnosed due to misdiagnosis, says Ajayi

70 percent PCOS cases go undiagnosed due to misdiagnosis, says Ajayi

Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, Managing Director of Nordical Fertility Centre, has revealed that 50-70% of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) cases go undiagnosed, largely due to misdiagnosis or a lack of awareness among healthcare providers and the public.

Speaking at a recent virtual press conference on “PCOS and Fertility: Navigating Treatment Options,” Ajayi highlighted that in Nigeria and across Africa, PCOS is a leading cause of infertility, particularly anovulatory infertility.

He said that despite this, it remains underdiagnosed and clouded by misconceptions.

He stressed the need to disseminate accurate information about PCOS, which affects an estimated 10-15% of women, with many cases still going undetected due to limited awareness.

“Too often, women are diagnosed based solely on ultrasound results,” one speaker noted, highlighting a common misconception.                          “A scan might show polycystic ovaries, but that doesn’t confirm the syndrome. The condition must meet specific criteria, and diagnosis is more than just the presence of cysts.”

According to experts, a proper diagnosis of PCOS should meet two out of three key symptoms: Irregular Menstrual Cycles – Women with PCOS often experience fewer than eight or nine periods a year. This irregularity stems from follicles that are arrested in development, preventing ovulation.

“Elevated Male Hormones – Known as hyperandrogenism, this causes women to develop male-pattern hair growth, including facial hair, chest hair, and even changes in genital hair distribution and appearance of Polycystic Ovaries on ultrasound, though, as noted, this is not always definitive by itself”.

He opined that these symptoms are often compounded by insulin resistance, a condition in which the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar is impaired. This leads to an overproduction of insulin, which in turn stimulates the ovaries to produce more male hormones, exacerbating the symptoms.

“The consequences of undiagnosed or untreated PCOS are far-reaching. Aside from fertility issues, women with the condition are at risk of developing other health complications, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and endometrial cancer due to irregular menstruation”.

The doctor also pointed out the emotional toll PCOS can take, especially in societies where fertility and femininity are culturally significant. “It’s not just about the physical symptoms. It’s about helping women understand their bodies and empowering them to manage a condition they will live with for the rest of their lives.”

He asserted that a core objective of PCOS Awareness Month is to dispel common myths. One prevalent misconception is that all women with polycystic ovaries have PCOS. While many women may have polycystic ovaries, not all meet the diagnostic criteria for the syndrome. “There is a significant difference between having polycystic ovaries and having PCOS,” an expert clarified.

He appealed to healthcare providers, advocates, and patients are encouraged to take part in initiatives aimed at raising awareness, improving early diagnosis, and providing women with the tools and knowledge to manage PCOS effectively. By doing so, many women can live healthier, more fulfilling lives despite the challenges posed by the condition.

“We are here to spread the truth about PCOS and offer hope. “It’s about time we empower women with the knowledge and support they need to navigate this lifelong condition.”, he said.

Ajayi, ex-Ondo Speaker trade words over defection

The governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi and House of Assembly former Speaker Jumoke Akindele have traded words over defection of associates of ex-Governor Olusegun Mimiko to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akindele was among former leaders of PDP who joined APC.

Ajayi said the defectors were detached from developments within the PDP before their defection.

Speaking through the Special Adviser (Media) of his campaign organisation, Ayo Fadaka, Ajayi said one of the defectors could not be considered as an asset to the PDP because he was nominated as NDDC commissioner at the onset of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

He said: “We note that these people are mere rolling stones who gather no moss, as they relocate from one party to another during every election cycle.

“They have never been politically stable, reason we are not missing them.

‘’They will add nothing to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and his party. Rather, they will become unlucky, and we congratulate him and APC on this account.

“To serious minded people remaining in APC, we urge them to take cognisance that a large chunk of their colleagues responsible for APC’s success in the past have since teamed up with us. So they must waste no further time to join PDP in our quest to reposition our state for development and productivity.’’

Akindele, however, cautioned Ajayi to wait for the outcome of the November 16 poll.

“Why are they bothered about our leaving? Why are they so worried about our leaving? Now that we have left, let us see how they will win election. It does not matter what they are saying. Sour grapes we call it,” she said.

Ondo 2024: I conquered poverty at 22, Ajayi tells youths

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State, Hon. Agboola Ajayi, has called on the party’s youth members to lead the election campaign and secure victory at the polls.

Speaking at a retreat in Akure for PDP youth leaders, Ajayi shared his journey of overcoming poverty by age 22 and encouraged the youths to take bold risks to ensure the defeat of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He emphasised the importance of being frustrated by the current state of the country and assured them that if they fully committed to the campaign, it would be challenging for the APC to rig the election.

Hon Ajayi said: “We have seen signals, we have seen their plans and we are not scared of any intimidation because this is our state, what is going to happen is that people will go out and vote, we are not scared of anybody. Once our people peacefully conduct themselves, you can’t take away their rights to vote for whoever they want to vote for.

“I have always advised them that they must not allow any reflection to frustrate them and they must conquer poverty and they will do that by their votes.

“We have prepared for them and we are ready for them, we would resist any act of intimidation by any opposition in this state. Forget about the power of any incumbency, the power of masses is more than any incumbency power.”

Caretaker committee chairman of the Ondo PDP, Hon Bakkita Olofowobi Bello, encouraged the youths not to betray the party by yielding to inducement.

The youths, in their various opinions, demanded a 65 percent slot in appointments if Ajayi won the polls and vowed to end bad governance in the state through protest votes.

They urged the party to provide them with all the necessary materials, saying there was no way they could do anything without funding.

  • Ajayi: Dawn of a new era at DSS

Ajayi: Dawn of a new era at DSS

    • By Achilleus-Chud Uchegbu

The video, which has gone viral on social media, of workers at the headquarters of the Department of State Security (DSS), jubilating over the change of guards at the leadership of the organisation, aptly captures the words of the Christian Holy Book at Proverbs 29:2, which reads, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice…” This opens the people to the fact that several teachers make a man, but one man can change the world.

That is the meaning of the celebrations around the ascendency of Mr Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, an eagle-eyed security buff and an astute spymaster to the headship of the DSS. It speaks to Ajayi’s dexterity and adroitness at his job, an obsession that had occupied him since joining the service in 1990.

A scion of the clerical family of Reverend and Reverend Mrs. A. Ajayi of Odogbolu in Ogun state, the new sheriff at DSS comes to the job with demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism, and dedication to duty, spanning several state commands where he was noted for his zest for excellence. Starting in 2010 as state director in Bauchi state where he effectively managed the security situation and contained the spread of the Boko Haram terrorist group, Ajayi moved on to stamp his imprint on the security master plan of Nigeria with the strict management of the Enugu Command in 2015 where he left indelible marks containing the rise of non-state actors. He was between 2015 and 2016 in Bayelsa state as State Director working to ensure that militancy and violent activism were effectively managed. In all these roles, Ajayi left no one in doubt that the skies are not the limit.

Ajayi’s reward for the effective management of the Bayelsa State Command was a move to Rivers State where, between 2016 and 2019, he worked very hard to achieve high marks and acclaim in stemming the tide of militancy and violent crimes as well as ensuring that the 2019 general election in the state was without security challenges.

Having succeeded in Rivers state, Ajayi’s next duty post was Kogi state where he was instrumental in making the state count among the least terrorised states in Nigeria with the containment of non-state actors while insulating the state from the devastating actions of terrorist groups.

Ajayi, as assistant director-General at the DSS, worked in the office of the President, before his appointment to head the spy agency. He is considered one of the most resourceful spy masters still in the service of the DSS. He has played key roles in several high-profile operations and has been instrumental in shaping the agency’s response to evolving security threats. His deft management of security challenges within and outside Nigeria’s borders, won for him, accolades that now count as positive marks to the value he brings to the job.

A disciplined officer who is never tired of learning, Ajayi ascends office having fully prepared himself for the top job by taking detective courses in security, strategic management and protection in Israel, the United States of America (USA) and the United Kingdom (UK). Through the different certificate courses, Ajayi was exposed to new and modern techniques in security threat detection and management.

He, therefore, brings to the job experiences earned over three decades of consistent participation in the management of security challenges in Nigeria. His appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, considered by most Nigerians, as a round peg in a round hole, comes at a time when the morale of the staff of the DSS is at its lowest. This is demonstrated by comments and expressions by staff of the agency as Ajayi’s predecessor was retired.

In appointing Ajayi to the office, President Tinubu demonstrated his commitment to departing from a practice that had creatively destroyed the growth of the organisation. The practice of recalling retired operatives to head organisations like the DSS, works only to kill morale and destroy commitment to excellence. Such practice had stultified growth and impacted negatively on the willingness of staff to apply themselves to the execution of the core mandate of the agency. Here, President Tinubu got it right and deserves commendation.

However, the tasks ahead for Ajayi need not to be restated. As an ‘insider’, he knows where the balm was wrongly applied. It is now his assignment, as a core professional, to rejuvenate the organisation, rebuild trust and commitment among the personnel and also, bring back the vigour with which staff express themselves through giving their best to their jobs. These should be his lowest-hanging fruits. They should also be the initial steps towards the re-making of the Department of State Security.

His new leadership also comes with the euphoria of the birth of a new baby. It comes with loads of expectations from Nigerians. Many Nigerians have, on social media, expressed the belief that Ajayi will pull DSS away from the practice of presenting itself like a rabble-rouser and adjust itself to a new work ethos that would make it nip security challenges in the bud, or, bust insecurity cells rather than raising alarms. What this means for most Nigerians is that Ajayi is taking over the DSS at a most critical time in Nigeria’s story. For them, his appointment is seen as a bold step towards revitalizing the DSS and enhancing its capacity to tackle emerging security challenges.

Nigerians now look forward to enjoying the proceeds of Ajayi’s experience and professionalism in counter-terrorism, counter-intelligence, and strategic intelligence gathering and analysis. Having played key roles in several high-profile operations, Nigerians also now want to feel his impact in shaping the agency’s response to evolving security threats. They want to see a reformed DSS, one that is operationally efficient with improved intelligence-gathering capabilities and with better and stronger inter-agency collaboration. Nigerians are thirsty for a DSS that is empowered with innovative strategies to tackle emerging security threats.

Nigerians would like to celebrate Adeola Ajayi as Nigeria’s most impactful spy chief. Before they do that, however, Ajayi and his new leadership team ought to know, that escalating threats of terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping have worked together to force Nigerians to live fearfully and tearfully in a country they call their home and one in which they look forward to living freely and peacefully. There is a feeling that Ajayi is primed to change the narrative. The challenge is now his. He has no option but to succeed.
