  • Falana, Ajibade impacted Nigerians in most profound ways, says Tinubu

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu  yesterday felicitated  with Lagos lawyer Femi Falana and ace journalist Kunle Ajibade on their birthdays.

Tinubu, in a statement by his media aide Tunde Rahman, said there was no doubt that Falana and Ajibade had impacted Nigeria and Nigerians in the most profound ways.

While thanking them for their sacrifices, he said the country is not yet in the Promised Land.

“We enjoin the duo not to rest on their oars and to join hands with us in the All Progressives Congress, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, to make Nigeria a better place,” Tinubu said.

The statement reads: “The month of May, which in 1999 heralded the rebirth of democracy again in Nigeria after almost 16 years of unbroken military interregnum, is also significant in one other respect. It is the month of birth of many prominent Nigerians.

“But this statement is about just two of them, Messers Femi Falana and Kunle Ajibade, both of them icons in their chosen fields, the one an outstanding lawyer, the other exceptional journalist.

“Falana, born May 20, 1958, and Kunle Ajibade, born on May 28, 1958, recently turned 60. I say happy birthday to them and wish them long life, continued good health and renewed energy to continue to make invaluable contributions to our country.”

“Both are close friends and associates, with whom I have interacted in our continuous struggle for the enthronement of true democracy, good governance and rule of law.

“Mr. Falana is a lawyer, pro-democracy and human rights activist, who over time employed and continues to employ the instrumentality of the law to correct the ills of the society.

“His contributions to constitutionalism and jurisprudence know no bounds. He takes briefs from the rich to empower him to fight the injustices against the poor pro bono. Like his late mentor and comrade, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Falana is an advocate of the people, of the masses.

Ajibade is that astute journalist and celebrated author, who through his pen, fought against the military junta and was particularly a thorn in the flesh of the late Abacha regime.

“He authored two popular books ‘Jailed for Life,’ his experience in prison to which he was clamped by the Abacha junta, and ‘What a Country,’ which speaks about the ills in the country.”

It added: “As both were united in their month of birth, there is also an unmistakable meeting-point in their life trajectories. Both fought against successive military regimes to facilitate the emergence of democracy in the land and a country laden with respect for human rights.

“They fought to ensure Nigeria is a citadel of social justice and rule   of law and generally a better place for the present generation and generations yet unborn.

“There is no doubt that both Falana and Ajibade had impacted Nigeria and Nigerians in the most profound ways.

“We thank them for their struggles. We thank them for their sacrifices. But we are not yet in the Promised Land. We enjoin the duo not to rest on their oars and to join hands with us in the All Progressives Congress, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, to make Nigeria a better place.”

Sunshine an international brand, says Ajibade

Talks about Sunshine Stars having more of Ondo State indigenes in their squad has been quashed by the President of Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), Prince Dapo Ajibade.
According to Ajibade: “That can’t be true, we presented our team after a pre-season tournament and I can tell you that around 90% of that squad aren’t Ondo State indigenes,” Ajibade told Goal.
“Sunshine Stars is an international brand, it’s not that regular local team. If we see quality talent any where in the world , we shall long to bring such talent to Sunshine Stars.”
“My target next season isn’t the league shield, my focus is to ensure that things are done the proper way. Make sure players are paid as and when due, players welfare is paramount and when the right environment has been created the team will definitely achieve a whole lot.
“Football isn’t expensive it’s the greed of some administrators that makes it feel it’s very expensive.”

  • Banking literacy guidelines coming

    Banking literacy guidelines coming

Plans are underway to release the financial literacy frameworks in September this year to increase the customers’ knowledge and participation in banking activities, it was learnt.

Sources close to CBN said the frameworks, which formed an integral part of the financial inclusion strategies introduced last year to bring more people into savings net, would soon be implemented.

It was also gathered that commercial banks, microfinance institutions, mobile money operators, among others, are going to play significant roles in the execution of the guidelines.

Confirming the development, the CBN’s spokesman, Mr Ugochukwu Okoroafor, said the framework is one of the initiatives on the radar of the banking watchdog.

He said the guidelines are of utmost importance to the apex bank since they would help in making more people understand and access banking services.

He said apex bank has created a consumer protection department to cater for the needs of depositors, adding that the financial literacy frameworks would compliment such efforts.

He said: “It is true that financial literacy frameworks will soon be released. We created a consumer protection department to help fight for depositors whose rights have been trampled upon. The next thing is to create a conducive environment to facilitate the growth of customers by making them literate on issues relating to banking transactions. This is where the issue of financial literacy frameworks comes in.”

Noting that the level of financial illiteracy in the country is very high, he said many people do not know how to prepare and present bankable projects to secure loans. Besides, he said they do not also know how to open accounts, write cheques, request for loans or overdrafts, operate Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), use Point of Sale(PoS) terminals among other electronic payment channels.

He said the level of financial inclusion is very low in the rural areas because many do not have bank accounts.  The frameworks, he said, would address these issues when they are eventually implemented.

The CBN introduced financial inclusion programme following the discovery that about 70 per cent of the 160million people do not have bank accounts. The World Bank in a report also noted that Nigeria had the highest number of people that do not have access to banking services.
