Ajimobi’s lead counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN)?, called off the appearances of his client’s witnesses after the appearances of six witnesses within three days.

The Accord Party governorship candidate,  Rashidi Ladoja, ?is challenging the declaration of Ajimobi by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the winner of the April 11 governorship election in the state.

The petitioner also joined APC, Dr. Rufus Akeju, who is INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state and INEC as co-respondents.?

Speaking on the development, Olanipekun? said: “We have used three days out of the five days allotted to us by the tribunal.

  • Ladoja fails to stop Ajimobi’s star witness at tribunal

Ladoja fails to stop Ajimobi’s star witness at tribunal

Accord and its Oyo State governorship candidate Senator Rashidi Ladoja yesterday made a failed attempt to stop a key witness of Governor Abiola Ajimobi and the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the  hearing of a petition over the April 11 election.

Ladoja and Accord are challenging Ajimobi’s election before the Justice Aliyu Maiyaki-led tribunal sitting in Ibadan, the state capital.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the APC are co-respondents.

Ajimobi opened his defence yesterday with his counsel, Mr. Olumuyiwa Aduroja (SAN), inviting the immediate past caretaker chairman of Ibadan North West Local Government Area, Mr. Wasiu Olatubosun, who doubled as the APC’s State Collation Agent in the election.

But Chief Bayo Lawal – who stood in for the petitioners’ lead counsel – vehemently opposed it.

He told the tribunal that Olatubosun’s written statement, as presented to him, was neither signed nor dated and therefore, he was not eligible to be admitted into the witness box.

But counsel to the first and second respondents, Olumuyiwa Aduroja (SAN) and Bamidele Aiku (SAN), countered Lawal by stating that their witness was qualified to give evidence.

The issue was later resolved by the tribunal chairman, who after consultation with the tribunal registry, affirmed that Olatubosun had his statement signed and dated.

Consequently, Olatubosun stated during cross-examination by the counsel to the third and fourth respondents that the April 11, 2015 governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state were conducted by INEC to reflect free, fair and credible outcomes.

His statement was supported by three other witnesses – Aderemi Adebayo (Lagelu), Adewale Akande (Saki East) and Mr. Waheed Ajibade – who testified that the APC candidate won.

Adebayo told the tribunal that he was surprised that Accord could challenge the results from his domain, where, he said, its candidate had won with a margin of 501 votes.

He, however, averred that the APC had accepted the results from Lagelu in good faith.

The four witnesses were cross-examined by the petitioners’ counsel, and counsel to first, second, third and fourth respondents, Olumuyiwa Aduroja, (SAN), Babatunde Aiku (SAN) and Yusuf Ali (SAN).

Ajimobi had entered a crucial stage of cross-examination of witnesses by counsel to both the petitioners and the respondents.

Hearing resumed yesterday following completion of the annual national conference of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja with majority of the counsel to both parties as participants.

Tribunal dismisses Ladoja’s application for forensic expert

The Oyo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal on Tuesday dismissed an application filed by Sen. Rashidi Ladoja seeking a leave to call a forensic analyst, Dr. Babatunde Adebola, to testify before the tribunal.

The Chairman of the tribunal sitting at the Oyo State High Court, Iyaganku, Ibadan, Justice Muhammed Mayaki, dismissed the application in a one-hour ruling.

Ladoja, who represented the Labour Party in the April 11 governorship election in the state, is challenging the victory of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the All Progressive Congress, in the poll.

The tribunal held that the application was rejected because it was not presented during the pre-hearing session, adding that no exparte order was sought by the petitioner to bring same after the expiration of the session.

Justice Mayaki said the application contradicted the provision of paragraph 47 (1) of the First Schedule of the Electoral Act 2010.

The judge described the application as an abuse of the court process, adding that the report of the forensic analyst should have been tendered with that of the first witness, Mr. Bimbo Adepoju, instead of bringing them piece meal.

The forensic analyst was the leader of the team that inspected and counted ballot papers and boxes used for the election.

‎The application also sought invitation of one Mr. Bola Akinyemi to testify along with the forensic analyst.

  • Oyo APC passes vote of confidence on Ajimobi, party chair

The All Progressives Congress(APC), Oyo State chapter, yesterday passed a vote of confidence on Gov. Abiola Ajimobi and the chairman of the party, Chief Akin Oke.

The party described Ajimobi and Oke as good political players whose wealth of experience and managerial acumen facilitated the victory of APC in the last general elections in the state.

In a statement, Director of Publicity and Strategy of  the party, Olawale Sadare,  denied  speculation about an alleged internal crisis in the state chapter of the party, noting that the rumour was the handiwork of some misguided elements.

According to the statement; “the well attended executive session at the South West office of APC was the first in the last few months and it reviewed a number of critical issues such as consideration of the reports of the last general elections as well as those of the committees set up to recommend appropriate disciplinary actions for erring members including some members of the National Assembly.

”The meeting lauded the proactive steps taken by Senator Ajimobi and the State Working Committee (SWC) of the party which were enough to resolve the leadership crisis that threatened the smooth inauguration of the 8th Oyo State House of Assembly. The steps prevented what could have thrown the state into another round of intractable infighting in the legislative chamber.”

  • How to stop building collapse, by Ajimobi, Aregbesola

How to stop building collapse, by Ajimobi, Aregbesola

Skills development for construction workers and entrepreneurship in the industry should be given priority to stop buildings from collapse, Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi and his Osun counterpart Rauf Aregbesola said yesterday.

They spoke at the 45th Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Building at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan (UI), Ibadan.

Ajimobi said: “Developing the skills of artisans will also put a check to the incidents of collapsed buildings that are now a common feature in the construction industry.

“It is imperative for your institute and other professional bodies in the construction industry to come together to create a common platform and partner  with governments at all levels and tertiary institutions to develop a more robust master plan for skills acquisition and development for the country.”

He decried cases of collapsed building in Nigeria, stressing that it was unimaginable that a country blessed with great potentials in its construction industry could experience such a problem.

The governor noted the death of 67 South African nationals in the building collapse at Synagogue Church of All Nations, which, he noted, has put the integrity and expertise of Nigerian builders to test.

He said the state government would continue to provide an enabling environment for the institute and other stake holders in the task of producing structurally stable and risk free buildings.

Aregbesola called for strict compliance to building rules and regulation to ensure a safe and beautiful environment.

Aregbesola vowed that his administration would not relent in its efforts at changing the face of the state through urbanisation.

The built environment, the governor said, is the crowning glory of all civilisation.

He noted that urbanisation was “very germane to his government economy rediscovery”.

In a statement by his Director, Bureau of Communication & Strategy, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon Aregbesola, the governor hailed the institute for identifying with the successes of his administration in Osun despite what he called targeted and sustained attacks and criticisms from opposition of his government over inability to pay salaries promptly.

Those, who also witnessed the event, included the President, Nigerian Institute of Building, Tunde Lasabi; former Head of Service of the Federation Prof. Oladapo Afolabi, Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan Prof. Isaac Adewole and others.

The governor hailed the institute for its efforts at improving the environment and for imposing standard on building construction.

“An accompanying problem of regulation failure is building collapse, which has become a scourge of the cities. Buildings, even those still under construction, have been in freefall, sometimes killing people and causing grievous bodily harm.

“I have no doubt that these are of serious concerns to your body and you are seriously addressing it,” he said.

Aregbesola stressed that his administration has returned sanity to the built environment with the need to make  buildings in Osun safe and create a beautiful environment at the same time.

He added that the urgent task before his administration was to renew the urban centres, upgrade the slums and build future cities. Through the renewal programme, we are transforming the urban centres into modern ones.

He noted that nine cities  – Osogbo, Ilesa, Ile-Ife, Ikire, Ejigbo, Ede, Iwo, Ikirun and Ila-Orangun – are under the renewal exercise covering a kilometre radius from the Oba’s palace, regarded as the centre of town in each city.

Aregbesola pointed out that his administration has renewed negotiation with the UN-Habitat by  paying counterpart fund of N100 million. Other cities, besides the initial nine, will receive similar attention in due course.

Ajimobi  and Aregbesola were awarded with Honorary Fellowship award of the institute. Otunba Fatai Oshikoya was honoured with distinguished professional lifetime award.

    ‘Ajimobi didn’t bar reporters’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has denied reports that Governor Abiola Ajimobi restricted reporters from covering activities in his office.

It said the report was a clear misinformation and misinterpretation of a routine process.

A memo by the governor’s Special Adviser on Security, Segun Abolarinwa, barred some reporters from the Press Centre of the Governor’s Office.

The APC, in a statement by its spokesperson, Olawale Sadare, said the reports as circulated by a section of the media were misinterpretation of a routine accreditation exercise.

He said: “Our party was dismayed when a senior correspondent of a national daily  called to inform us about the development and immediate inquiries revealed that no order barring journalists from the Governor’s Office.

“However, we would like to put it on record that what happened was normal security procedure being coordinated by the appropriate authorities.

“The memo called for concerned media partners to undertake routine accreditation.”

  • Ajimobi urges Nigerians to pray for peace in North East

Ajimobi urges Nigerians to pray for peace in North East

The Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the return of peace in the county, especially the  North Eastern part of the country.

He said Nigerians must strive to live devotedly like the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), even as they beseech the Almighty to bestow His mercies upon the nation in this month and the others to come.

Ajimobi, who stated this in his Eid-el-Fitr message, implored the people of the state to pray for the people at the helms in the state.

“As we mark the completion of one of the most important tenets of Islam, the holy month of Ramadan, I pray that our lives will continue to reflect the devotion of the past month and we will continue to aspire to pure living.

“The lessons you have learnt during the Holy month are not to be discarded only to be re-learnt next year. We must strive to live devotedly like the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), even as we beseech the Almighty to bestow His mercies upon us in this month and the others to come.

“Since the celebration of the last Eid-el-Fitr, our country Nigeria, and indeed our state, Oyo, have gone through a political season. For the first time in many years, the election season was peaceful and hitch-free. I want to encourage you all to continue to live in that spirit of peace, and I hope that the period of Ramadan has granted you the spiritual strength to do so.

“Even as we rejoice, I remember our brothers and sisters in the Northern part of the country. The past few weeks have witnessed insecurity in some of those states, as a result of the evil acts perpetrated by insurgents. We must all pray for the safety of our fellow country-men and for an end to the insecurity,” he said.

Ajimobi called on the people to look out for the less-privileged in the society and extend the hand of generosity to them.

“My dear people,  please look out for those who are less privileged amongst us. Beyond praying for them, extend a hand of generosity to your neighbour. The Prophet (SAAW) made it a habit to be even more generous than usual in the Holy month. This is a practice we must all imbibe.

“The spirit of community that we have all embraced in the past month should become a part of our lives. Sacrificing for one another is one of the quickest ways through which we can individually contribute to the growth of our society.

“The spirit of contributing to the growth of society, I implore you all to make it a habit to pray for your leaders. Pray for those of us in Oyo State upon whom you bestowed your mandate again in 2015. Pray for the leaders at the centre, even as we all work together to bring the change that you overwhelmingly voted for months ago.”
