Artisans endorse Ajimobi for second term

Members of the Nigerian Association of Tailors (NAT), Oyo State chapter, have thrown their weight behind the second term bid of the state Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

The endorsement was made at a forum organised by the Vision 2015 Sensitisation Movement, being coordinated by a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Wasiu Olatunbosun. It followed similar endorsement by butchers and market women.

The association of butchers and market women had endorsed the governor in Ibadan, the state capital, last week during presentation of cheques for interest-free loans for members to boost their business.

It was learnt that a total of N1 billion has been earmarked in this year budget to empower traders and artisans across the state.

Endorsing the governor at the forum, held at NAT’s State Headquarters, Odinjo, Ibadan recently, the chairman of the artisans, Mogaji Razaq Adeyemo praised Ajimobi for contracting the sewing of uniform for cadets of the Youth Employment Scheme of Oyo State (YES-O) to the association in fulfillment of his campaign promise to empower artisans.

Adeyemo emphasised that the governor was also fulfilling other promises to make Oyo State better, adding that having remembered tailors and other artisans thus far, the association was convinced that he would fulfill other promises he made to artisans in the New Year. He pledged the support of tailors across the state for Ajimobi’s second term.

His declaration received a thunderous applause from NAT members who filled the hall. All other leaders of the artisans spoke in support of the endorsement.

Addressing the crowd, the coordinator of the movement, Wasiu Olatunbosun, urged the tailors to continue to support Governor Ajimobi and to give a good account of themselves by providing high quality services which the governor is known for.

Olatunbosun said within 30 months, Ajimobi has created the basis for comparison with previous governors with a clear difference in their achievements.

According to him, Ajimobi has replaced violence with peace, replaced filth with cleanliness and orderliness as well as raised the welfare of civil servants and artisans, among several achievements he has recorded within his short time as the governor.

A similar endorsement was done by butchers last week when the governor presented a cheque of N50 million to be used as an interest-free loans to their union.

Traders and market women at the newly opened Scout Camp Neighbourhood Market at Challenge area of Ibadan also endorsed the governor when he presented them with a N20 million interest-free loan two weeks ago. The money was part of the N300 million released to traders in various markets across the state.

Ajimobi: lack of data impediment to tax collection

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has identified lack of a data base as a major impediment to tax collection by governments at all levels in Nigeria.

He spoke in his office in Ibadan while hosting the Team Seven of the Senior Course 36 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State.

Ajimobi said no government could fulfill its promises to the people without a good revenue generation system.

He said lack of a good data base makes it difficult for governments to generate revenue, adding: “A major problem of tax collection is lack of robust demographic data, which would have provided necessary information about people’s real income to ensure payment of appropriate taxes.”

The governor called for a change in the culture of impunity, lack of willingness to pay tax and “the attitude of people trying to get virtually everything for free”.

He said: “Most of our people want the government to provide good services, but they do not like paying for them and no government can function without taxes.”

Ajimobi stressed the need to empower the people, so that they would be able to pay their taxes promptly.

He said his administration was centered on accountability and transparency, adding that it had been providing empowerment opportunities for the people, particularly traders and youths.

The governor said N1 billion was set aside by his administration to empower traders and artisans, of which N300 million had been distributed as interest-free loans.

Ajimobi, who said he wanted to be remembered as the father of modern Oyo State, pledged to leave good legacies behind.

Leader of the team Brig.-Gen. Olubunmi Oyebade said they were in Oyo State to learn about the socio-economic issues peculiar to the state, which is a requirement for their programme.

    Lawmaker defends Ajimobi on infrastructure

Oyo State House of Assembly’s Chief Whip Abiodun Adigun-Hameed has defended Governor Abiola Ajimobi on the projects in Akinyele Local Government.

He said the governor approached political leaders in the council to provide a space for projects in the area, but no space had been found for such projects.

Adigun-Hameed, who spoke at the inauguration of two transformers and a pedestrian bridge at Agbowo, said government demolished structures to protect life and property.

He said: “I am using this medium to appeal to Ojoo community to cooperate with the government and bring development to the area. The governor has approached leaders in the area to provide a land where such project can be sited.”

The lawmaker said the people should see Ajimobi as one of their sons, who meant well and was ready to bring development to the area because of the peculiarity of the council.

Chairman of the Ilupeju Landlord Association, Elder Adisa Bolaji, who spoke on behalf of residents, said the association had written to the local government with no result.

•Focus shifts to water supply, education, health and agriculture

Though it was the usual inter-faith prayer heralding a new working year and all was set to do so, but civil servants in the employ of the Oyo State government got more than they expected last Monday.

They went jubilating as Governor Abiola Ajimobi reeled out his plans for them in 2014 even as he doled out cash to reward good performance in the previous year.

With spontaneous rousing greeting, the Governor’s Office Car Park, venue of the prayer meeting, became a rally ground of a sort for the three hours that the programme lasted.

The Muslim and Christian clerics had opened the meeting with prayers. Traditional worshippers were also on ground to add colour to the event.

The governor, who spoke last, acknowledged that the civil servants have shown a good level of change for the better within the two and a half years that he took over the mantle of leadership of the state. He lauded their tenacity and encouraged them to keep changing for the better.

Ajimobi said they were capable of performing any task no matter how difficult it looks, pointing out that they have risen to the occasion in the various ways his administration has challenged them. He cited several examples, starting with the production of the beautiful programme for the event.

The governor called out an official of the state printing press who produced it, Mrs Margaret Olatoun Oluwafemi, lauded her and rewarded her with a cash gift of N250,000. All the workers jumped up in ecstasy and went into a frenzy of terrific clapping. He also gave the entire team another N250,000 for doing a good job.

So was the case for Mr. Oyelola Okunlola of the Office of the Surveyor-General that was singled out for dressing well. He was rewarded with N100,000 cash gift.

For beating his deadline to revamp the Asejire Waterworks in order to provide water for Ibadan residents within three months, the state’s water corporation got a gift of N5 million while all participants at the prayer meeting got a cash gift of N10 million.

Reeling out his plans, Ajimobi disclosed that a car assembly plant would be opened in Ibadan this year to help more civil servants buy brand new cars. He said, civil servants deserve the best, stressing that it was part of the reasons his administration went for the car assembly plant that would be delivering brand new cars at affordable prices to the masses. He further disclosed that he has taken delivery of a sample of the car which would be assembled by a Chinese firm.

He also promised to build more low cost houses for civil servants to enable them enjoy decent accommodation. The governor said once the first phase of the project is completed, they would enjoy the opportunity to come and see what is on offer and decide whether they want to participate or not.

He said he had ordered redevelopment of many governor’s guest houses located in many Government Reserved Areas (GRA) into luxury apartments for purchase and use by residents including civil servants.

The governor, who said all the cash gifts he gave to the workers were from his personal purse, emphasised his knack for quality, stressing the need for civil servants to always settle for the best.

“I am a man of quality. So I urge you never to settle for less but to always have positive mental attitude towards service. Not only that, you must also inculcate it into your children,’’ he said.

He also announced salary review which he said would be done by the end of the first quarter of the year and implemented without delay. Governor Ajimobi disclosed that a committee would be constituted this month to fashion out a wage that would be acceptable to the generality of the workers.

The governor, however, stressed the need for the workers to redouble their efforts towards improving on the internally-generated revenue of the state.

Earlier the Head of Service (HOS), Alhaji Tajudeen Aremu in his welcome address, highlighted the several ways the Governor Ajimobi administration has raised the quality of life and work environment of an average civil servant in the state, including training and retraining in Nigeria and overseas, free transportation, upward review of housing and car loans and regular promotion.

He urged the workers to redouble their efforts to consolidate on the gains of the past. He also urged them to shun crave for ill-gotten wealth and concentrate on how to leave good legacies. Aremu encouraged them to emulate great forebears such as the late Simeon Adebo and Tejumade Alakija as well as Chiefs Theophilus Akinyele and M. S. Adigun.

He described Ajimobi as a “rescue agent ordained by God to save the state from the holocaust and reign of terror.

He said: “To the generality of well-meaning people in this gathering, I like us to see Governor Abiola Ajimobi as a rescue agent ordained by God to save the state from holocaust and reign of terror.

According to Mike Murdock, you don’t know the value of a thing until you lose it. I want to admonish us to do away with sentiments and embrace a vessel that is sold out for peace, progress and prosperity that we are all witnessing in the state. Walter Benjamin said: ‘If the enemy wins, even the dead will not be safe.’ This is our state. We don’t have any other place to go that can be like Oyo State. Therefore, we must watch out for sustainability of the ongoing good works in the state. A word is sufficient for the wise”.

He also pointed out that “the current year is highly promising as government was poised to focus on total transformation in water supply, education, health and agriculture, having made remarkable success in the areas of environmental beautification and urban renewal and physical development in the previous year”.

He advised the workers to work harder to ensure the fulfillment of the goal.

In their sermons, Dr. Segun Olatunji, a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and Sheikh Ahmad Rufai, the Chief Imam of Government House Mosque, commended the commitment and dedication of the civil servants, urging them to continue to reciprocate government’s gesture by renewing their cooperation and support to the government.

Taking his text from Quran 2: 102-104, Rufai called for more cooperation between workers and the government, stressing that nothing will be impossible for parties that cooperate in discharging their duties. He illustrated with a fable of a hawk, rat, cow and tortoise who worked together for the benefit of all members of the group.

Rufai emphasised that workers must work excellently well to be able to thank God, adding that workers must also appreciate what the employer is doing well.

The Muslim cleric advised leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to keep advising the governor well and keep supporting the government. “Cooperation is the best. It brings benefits to all stakeholders.” He said.

Pastor Olatunji also spoke along the same line, calling on the government to continue to discharge its duties with the fear of God and civil servants working with diligence and honesty.

They also called for unity among members of the political class to ensure the success of the Ajimobi administration and for the state to continue to move forward.

Restating the free education policy of his administration in primary and secondary schools, Ajimobi warned school heads against charging illegal fees.

He said: “I found out that some teachers charge pupils underground fees and I want this to stop.”

Urging teachers to put in their best to produce pupils, who will be outstanding in learning and character, the governor said with about 30 per cent allocated to education in the 2014 budget, more funds would be available to transform the sector.

ANCOPSS State President Mrs. Funmilayo Ojoawo hailed the administration’s education policy.

She said: “We appreciate the fact that the provision of free and quality education has become a huge investment. Tuition is free and the government has employed highly qualified teachers in our schools. This is highly commendable.”

Mrs. Ojoawo lauded the prevailing peace in the state, which she said contributed immensely to the successes recorded by the Ajimobi administration.

She said: “We thank God for the peace in Oyo State. It is a welcome development and we believe the Oyo of yesteryears, which was known for hooliganism of the highest degree, has now known peace. This is a major prerequisite for meaningful development. Whatever magic wand God has entrusted to our governor to bring peace to Oyo State is highly appreciated.”

Mrs. Ojoawo urged the government to promote secondary school teachers, who had been on Grade Level 16 for years, to Grade Level 17.

She requested that headteachers be considered to fill the vacant seats of permanent secretaries in the State Teaching Service Commission.

RETIRED judges in Oyo State have commended Governor Abiola Ajimobi for approving the payment of their severance gratuities which had been denied them by the last administration. This, said the retired judges, had forced the judges to institute legal action against the administration. The retired judges, in a statement issued by their spokesman, Justice Nurudeen Adekola, also expressed gratitude to the governor for making it possible for them to earn the same emoluments as their colleague serving judges, subject to constitutional provisions. “We remember with gratitude that in September 2011, just about four months after becoming the governor of this state, and at a time when the state was beset with myriads of problems that required huge financial commitments, you bent over backwards to see that we were paid our severance gratuities which were denied us, and which led to court action against the previous administration,’’ Justice Adekola stated.

The politician said Ajimobi’s projects have made him a top choice for re-election in 2015.

In a New Year message yesterday in Ibada, Pa Ojebode, who hails from Oyo West Local Government Area, noted that the APC administration invested on infrastructure than its predecessors.

He said the people appreciated Ajimobi’s contributions in Oyo State.

The APC chieftain said the governor had transformed Oyo State, adding that the residents should give him a second tenure.

According to him, Ajimobi “turned the limited resources at his disposal to verifiable life-enhancing projects.”

Ajimobi, Lanlehin provide healthcare for the poor

Nigerians living in the rural areas have suffered neglect due to lack of access to basic primary healthcare services. OSEHEYE OKWUOFU reports that efforts by governments and public-spirited individuals in Oyo State is changing the ugly trend

Millions of people dwelling in rural communities in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital who, before now lacked access to basic primary healthcare services now heave a sigh of relief. This is because of the intervention of Oyo State government.

Primary healthcare defined as “essential healthcare based on practical, scientifically-sound and socially-acceptable methods,” is practically not possible in most communities.

As a result of non-availability of functional healthcare centres, rural dwellers have employed traditional healthcare methods to address critical healthcare needs.

However, basic primary healthcare goes beyond the traditional healthcare method that focuses on health, equity-producing social policy.

Basic primary health includes all areas that play a role in health such as access to health services, environment and lifestyle. In this, Governor Abiola Ajimobi, right from the inception of his administration, has shown commitment to the provision of various facets of basic healthcare for the people across the 33 local government areas of the state.

A clean people are a healthy people. Today, the city of Ibadan and the entire state are a reflection of a real model state.

Sensitisation campaign on the need for clean environment and massive urban renewal and beautification programme of the state government underscore the principle for basic primary healthcare.

Supported by his wife, Chief Mrs. Florence Ajimobi whose pet programme, Access to Basic Health Care Foundation (ABC), the governor’s effort at promoting basic healthcare for the people received a boost by Senator Olufemi Lanlehin’s free medical services across Oyo South Senatorial District.

A mammoth crowd of rural and urban dwellers were offered free medical services.

At local government levels, healthcare clinics have been rejuvenated and are offering free basic healthcare services to the poor.

This ideal model of healthcare delivery was adopted in the declaration of the International Conference on Primary Healthcare held in Alma Ata, Kazakhstan in 1978 known as the “Alma Ata Declaration”, and became a core concept of the World Health Organisation’s goal of health for all.

Most places visited in Ibadan and its environs, hundreds of people have been benefiting from the free healthcare services made available in different parts of Ibadan and extended into isolated rural areas through construction of health posts and centres that offer basic maternal-child health, immunisation nutrition, first aid, and referral services.

At Omi-Adio, in Ido Local Government in Ibadan less city, a health post constructed by the governor’s wife, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi has provided people unfettered access to free basic primary healthcare services.

The health post, according the Nurse in charge, Mrs. Bukola Aderibigbe serves more than 15 rural communities.

She said: “This health post is a huge relief to hundreds of people who live nearby communities but do not have health centres. As you can see, every day we record over 50 patients who visit this centre and were free drugs and treatment courtesy of the Access Basic Health Care Foundation of governor’s wife.”

Senator Lanlehin, in his effort to bring basic healthcare services to the rural poor, partnered with a United States-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), LABAKCARE which offered free healthcare services to over 6,000 people in nine local governments of the state.

Speaking on the five-day health programme, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin expressed joy that many could now access free medical services in the state, but noted that there is still much to be done to assist the people .

The leader of the United States medical team and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of LABAKCARE Organisation Inc., Dr. Omolabake Fadeyibi said the programme has really assisted the poor people who could not afford cost of medical treatment in no small measure.

While describing the turn-out as highly impressive, Dr Fadeyibi said her team of medical practitioners have been able to diagnose, treat and provide drugs freely to people.

“Labakcare organisation uses preventive medicine technique to take care of the people who will not be able to afford healthcare. That is, to take care of poor people. We do this mission here in Nigeria. We were here last year, and this year, Senator Lanlehin invited us to come.

“We bring in some donated medicines by the American government and some we purchased with our money. On the other hand, Senator Lanlehin provided accommodation, transportation and feeding.

“It was my dream to give back to my country; a reason I founded Labakcare. But I can’t give everybody because I don’t have much to give everybody. At least, I can help people to better understand how to take care of themselves. So, when we come, we screen for chronic health problems and educate people. We screen for high blood pressure, we screen for diabetes, screen for infection in women, we do blood glucose, we have done HIV test in the past, and healthcare education so that people can take good care of themselves, letting them know the medication we are giving them will not last long.

“So, it is their responsibility to seek needed care that is also cheap from any local doctor because they don’t have money and healthcare is least on their agenda. So, that is what we have been doing since we started. We took care of pregnant women, we gave them prenatal vitamins that were donated by some companies in the US,” she said.

The Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin expressed delight on the turnout, saying it was a true reflection of the healthcare needs of the people.

Lanlehin, who was represented by his Senior Legislative Aide, Mr. Kayode Aremu said: ”If you look at the situation of our people; especially at the rural areas, you will see that there are some things that should be provided by the government. Quality healthcare is one of them. This is lacking. Because of this poverty situation, a lot of people could not afford quality healthcare. It is not all deaths that are natural. In most cases, it is due to lack of resources to care for their health. But when we have people in government, they can provide things like free medical care for the people because of the love for their people.
