Ajomale, Olasoju, others rally Isolo residents for APC e-registeration

The Chairman of Isolo Local Council Development Area, Olasoju Adebayo has urged interested residents to join the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) membership e-registration.

At a special meeting held at the exquisite Ibis International Hotel, Ajao Estate, Olasoju lent his voice to that of Oshodi/Isolo APC Apex Leader, Otunba Henry Oladele Ajomale, in re-awakening the consciousness of attendees to the task at hand.

The council boss extolled Chief Ajomale’s ingenuity which has placed peace-brokering missions on his shoulder several times in the past.

He lamented the low numbers of registered people in Isolo.

A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly,  Ladi Ajomale, noted that the exercise is digitalised and open to monitoring in real time which has left the presidency dissatisfied with Lagos state particularly, Isolo and a number of other council areas.

Ajomale hinted that 150,000 organic members is the mandate given to Isolo at the state as he lamented Isolo sliding off from 3rd to 12th position in a rating since the exercise commenced. Ajomale maintained that a drastic improvement in performance as regards the registration exercise could be leveraged to push for Federal and State appointments for the benefit of all.

Otunba Ajomale, who is the former Lagos State APC Chairman, gave an analysis of the registered voters in Oshodi/Isolo and the eventual overall votes recorded during elections as abysmally low with a charge to attendees to justify the two federal lawmaker slots being enjoyed among other privileges.

He called for suggestions from attendees on the task at hand.

After listening to suggestions such as the creation of centres close to markets, improved funding of the Community Development Committee (CDC) and empowering party members at wards level, a 7-Man Committee was set up to practically outline and execute strategy.

Also speaking, Otunba Jide Oni, charged attendees to rededicate themselves to the goals of the party.

He maintained that it’s better to be a nominal member of the ruling party than being an executive member of a struggling opposition party.

Former chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State and a Governor’s Advisory Council member, Otunba Henry Ajomale, has assured Lagosians that the crisis rocking the House of Assembly will be resolved amicably.

Ajomale, who represented Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at an award ceremony in Surulere, Lagos, at the weekend, said everything would be alright and the difference would be seen at the next sitting.

He believed the case would be withdrawn from court, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s intervention.

He said: “Very soon everything will be alright. You will see the difference at the next sitting. Somebody is aggrieved and he went to court and it is his right to go to court and it is now our own duty since Mr. President has intervened and rightly too because this is his own making because he will not allow it to create a bitter problem. This is why he has to intervene. Everything is back to normal. He (Mudashiru Obasa) has been returned as the Speaker and I believe the case will be withdrawn from court in no time, perhaps at the next sitting. You will see the difference.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu received the award of ‘Action Governor of the Decade’. Ajomale got an ambassadorial award and medal. Sanwo-Olu was also presented with a trophy and special medal of honour.

The award was organised by Broadcasting Talents, Nigeria. Ademola Bankole is the proprietor and managing director.

    • Isolo chair hails octogenarian’s gesture

A former Lagos State Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Henry Oladele Ajomale, has distributed food items to 2,000 households in Isolo.

The gesture was part of activities to commemorate his 80th birthday.

The prominent member of the high-class Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC) clocked 80 on October 4.

Notable among the long list of political associates who sent heartfelt tributes to the latest octogenarian was President Bola Tinubu who lauded him for his lifetime service, selfless leadership, and immense contributions to the state and the nation.

Hosting over 2,000 residents across the seven wards and other strata such as religious, market, and youth organisations as well as Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) among others in Isolo LCDA at his residence on Ago Palace Way, Ajomale noted that he shunned elaborate party for the philanthropic act to further appreciate God and give back to the society.

He said: “Let’s give thanks to God for His grace that has kept us this far. This is divine grace and nothing else. The myriad of problems bedeviling the country cannot be completely solved by government and I am of the belief that whoever God has helped should graciously give to others. We appreciated God yesterday. We did not have any party.

“We thought it wise that the money that would have gone into throwing a party could be used to buy and distribute food items to 7,000 families. It will go a long way in helping them to feed at this period. In addition to that, the current situation of the country calls for increased support of one another.”

The celebrator added that the target is to touch 7,000 families across Oshodi-Isolo LGA as a similar program will be held on Saturday and the upper one at Ejigbo and Oshodi communities respectively.

Chief Ajomale added that he hoped to carry out the gesture regularly to further uplift residents of the community especially the downtrodden.

“This is a gesture we hope to carry out regularly for our people till the foreseeable future, may God keep helping us,” he said.

Chairman of Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Adebayo Olasoju, hailed Chief Ajomale’s gesture.

Olasoju said the items would go a long way in ameliorating the sufferings of the people.

He thanked the former APC Lagos Chairman for putting smiles on the faces of 2,000 Isolo residents.

Expressing his appreciation, the Chief Imam of Ago-Okota Central Mosque, called on other well-meaning individuals in the society to emulate the celebrant’s gesture which he said conforms with the teaching of Prophet Muhammad.

CAN Chairman, Isolo LCDA Chapter, Bishop Kayode Adebayo, thumbed up the celebrator for following Biblical teachings on generosity, adding that such deed attracts long life and God’s continued faithfulness.

Other beneficiaries could not contain their excitement at the gesture as they all prayed for many years with continued impact for the political leader.

  • 2019: Ajomale predicts victory for APC

    •Ex-Rep member Ajata hits 80

The immediate past Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Chief Henry Ajomale has predicted victory for the ruling party in the next year’s general elections.

Ajomale said Nigerians would not allow people that ruined the economy and entrenched corruption into the system return to power. He spoke to reporters at the 80th birthday celebration of a veteran politician and former Member of the House of Representatives, Chief Joseph Jaiyeola Ajata held in Lagos yesterday.

The former APC Chairman said if not for the APC government led by President Muhammadu Buhari  that came to rescue the country in 2015, Nigeria would have been worse. He said:  “Nigerians should not be deceived by those who want to destroy the country. Buhari should be given another chance.  We don’t have to be in a hurry to destroy this country. We should allow Buhari to continue his good work by re-electing him in 2019.”

Asked why he has not been active in politics since he left office as APC Chairman, Ajomale said: “I have not retired from politics. I’m still in APC. I still work with our leaders for the good of the party. I served as Chairman for 12 years. I had to give way for younger people to come in with fresh ideas on party management.”

On the chances of Lagos APC in 2019, he said: APC will win in Lagos. “The people of Lagos can’t be taken for granted. Since 1999, the progressive party has been in power in the state which has promoted infrastructural and economic development. The state is far ahead of other states because it is endowed with tested and educated leaders.”

He described Ajata as a sincere, reliable, well respected and regarded politician. According to him, “we have been together for the past 22 years. He represented my constituency, Oshodi/Isolo II. He carried along his constituents through regular consultation. I wish him many happy returns of the celebration in good health and prosperity”.

At a well attended reception, Ajata told the audience that “the inception of the journey of my life was not too smooth as I never enjoyed the warmth of my parental care because they travelled out  of town for greener pasture in Lagos. As early as my primary school days, I had been made to live with one uncle or another.

“Ideally, this more than anything else should have given me the opportunity to live a wayward live ,, but this indeed is a reality that tough time doesn’t last but tough people do and that when the going gets tough the tough gets going.”

Ajata, who represented Ohodi- Isolo II Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2011, advised Nigerians to elect people that have fear of God and those that would serve their interest during the 2019 general elections.

His auto- biography titled: “Adventures in Life, Business and Politics was presented to the audience. Dignitaries present on the occasion were Onisolo of Isolo, Oba Kabiru Agbabiaka; former Governor of Central Bank, Chief Joseph Sanusi, and Akaramu of Ikaramu-Akoko, Oba Momodu.

  • Ajomale: Defectors from APC are political jobbers

Former Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Lagos State Otunba Oladele Ajomale spoke with SINA FADARE on the gale of defections from the party and the preparations for next year’s polls.

You are the former Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Lagos State.  What were the challenges?

There are a lot of challenges. When you get there, you are to look at the welfare of the party members as a first step and you monitor the ward and know what is going on there. If there is any problem, you quickly tackle it by involving party members who are not in that zone so that he or she will be neutral and be able to say it the way it should be.

Some of the challenges range from looking for money to run the party to running after your members to contribute money for the party. Otherwise, you may not get anywhere. You have to prepare for any election that may come up at any time, the normal and sudden one in case someone died. Apart from that, the party members contacted you for many things, those who want to pay school fees, those who have just lost their fathers, those who have just been sent out of their rented apartment.

They all expect you to solve these problems day in day out. As a leader, you have to attend to them and solve them. Apart from this there are a lot of meetings, both at the ward level and national to attend to. As a chairman of the state, you are an automatic member of the NEC. Once a while NEC meetings is called to resolve pertinent issues.

You must be ready to solve disputes that may arise any time within the party. When you leave a problem lingering for so long, then, you find out that it becomes a monster and developed into a crisis, when it does, it is difficult for you to manage it.  My style is to tackle it immediately it surface and settle it once and for all. That is why you find little problems arising from conflicts in the party.

In spite of the challenges, Lagos State is the most stable and progressive, in terms of service delivery to the people. What is the magic?

You must have the attitude of getting all the reports from the wards to the local governments and anywhere there is conflict, I quickly moved there to nip it in the bud. If you do not monitor what is going on when it bust out, you are in trouble. So, what l do in most cases  is to make sure l get it at my fingertips what is going on in all the wards and the local governments in the state, by so doing it make things easier for me.

How are you able to survive the power play?

There is always power play everywhere, even in the churches, but l know how to play my game. I have an understanding leader, that is Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and other leaders of the party in the state. They have never given me any problems. Asiwaju is just like a family and always ready to assist the party. Any one that l cannot solve, l run to him. He may select other elders in the party to go with me to tackle the crisis at hand. He has a large heart and ready any day any time to listen to me.

Sometimes, it is the leadership that creates the problem. So, when l get there, I lay my claim on the table and l pick somebody from other zone to follow me to solve the problem. That one will be neutral and will be ready to call a spade a spade. In my experience in life, l am versed in dispute resolution and  coupled with my background as a lawyer, l was able to develop a model that has assisted me a lot to go far and solved a lot of problems in the party that do not get to the public.

For 12 years, we have been doing it with a good result. l am expecting the new chairman to fine tune this and inject a lot of innovations that will assist the party to continue to achieve the best in its future enterprise.

What do you think make the party teak, despite the odds?

I will say the major key factor is sincerity. The more you are sincere with your members, the better for you. If you see anything black, call it black not white. If we do not have money, l will tell them that we have no money and let us wait for a while. I make sure that when the money comes l used it to settle the most urgent on our priority list.

Asiwaju Tinubu has the ability to identify talents. At what point did you cross each other’s path?

Yes, he has that ability; you can only give that to him. I met him in 1989 when he was not even a politician. He was in Mobil Oil as Chief Accountant and my brother worked with him. We met and our chemistry just worked together. We are in the same group called Primose, within the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He came out to contest into the  Senate. l have my chamber around Mushin area then. We are challenging Alhaji Lattef Jakande. The Lagos West was a verse area that covered areas like Mushin, lkeja, Ajegunle and Badagry.

I asked him if he could cope and he told me that he has some friends around those areas and l joined him. That was how we started. We know he cannot give us anything, but for prestige purpose, we worked for him. Our group must just get it because we had other groups, though in the same party, the SDP.

In the primary, we were able to defeat the Ase group and in the real election, that day was serious; rain everywhere, we were drenched to our pants, including women. We stayed on the line and when the votes  were eventually counted, we won. It was easy because when you see Asiwaju, you cannot but like him. He is a straight forward person. When he says he is your friend, he is, without any reservation. He cannot betray you, in fact he preferred you betraying him rather than him betraying you.

I know that over the years he is a man that l can trust. He cannot for any reason leave you in the cold, very dependable and trust worthy. Even when he was forced to go to exile, we continue to work and give him reports of happening at home. When he came back and he said he wanted to be governor, we went to primaries again with the same group and we won.  Alhaji Dawodu put up Funso Williams, who happened to be a family friend, but this was politics, we eventually won at the larger election. Asiwaju gave us the needed foundation and that is why others are building on it. That is why Lagos is progressing.

What is your reaction to the recent defection of members of your party in the National Assembly to the PDP?

We know from day one when they came into the party, that they do not have the interest of Nigerians at heart. They were trying to create their own nest, somewhere like a bird. They are used to sharing of money in a situation where thousands of Nigerians have no job. The government is creating avenue to tackle those problem, we have graduates that are roaming about the street, yet you are thinking about yourself alone.

They are complaining that they were not given this or that appointment. At what stage? Instead of them to sit back at home and let the younger generation come up and take those appointments.  They are used to getting free money in the PDP, but could not find such opportunity in the APC. That is why they are not comfortable. So, they have to go to where it is business as usual.

They got the Senate President seat and that of the Speaker of the House of Representatives and some others appointments. Four years is too short for you to agitate if you have the love of Nigerians at heart. But they are used to getting free money and when that one was not forth coming, they have to defect. Whereas the President is waging a serious war on corruption. They do not share such a vision, but just to share everything that is available.

It cannot be business as usual. Nigerians are not fools. So, let them go to where they belong. They want to loot the country at the detriment of all Nigerians; many of them are broke and cannot get money to steal anymore because the president did not give them the opportunity of stealing any money. That is why they are back to where they belong and want to plunge the country back again.

How are we sure that these people are not the one that is creating a lot of problems and incessant killings that we are experiencing so that the country will not be governable for the President because they do not see anything to chop? To me, their going is good radiance so that we know how many of us remaining. Even, if they’re re-branding, they are still the same set of people, Nigerians are watching. They are not threat to the APC.

  • 2019: Buhari will win, says Ajomale

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Otunba Oladele Ajomale, speaks on the cold war between the Presidency and the National Assembly. He examines President Muhammadu Buhari’s chances in next year’s election, preparations for APC’s convention, the endorsement of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for a second term and other partisan issues. Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN reports.

What is responsible for the endorsement of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for a second term?

I am not surprised by the growing demand by the people of Lagos State for the re-election of Governor Ambode, because he has delivered beyond expectations in the last three years. Every local government has been turned into a factory site. How he has been doing all this I don’t know. He has introduced new technology at bus terminals, the first of its kind in Africa. The rate at which people are endorsing him is unprecedented; it is obvious; everybody is happy and satisfied. There is no opposition for his re-election.

I can assure you that he will do better in his second term. You can see the development going on in Epe and Badagry; the upgrading of facilities in the state university, public schools and state hospitals. All those projects being executed are meant to turn Lagos into a smart city. There is also the plan to ensure 24-hour power supply in the state, by increasing power genation. He must be given the opportunity to complete all these projects. After Ambode’s eight-year tenure Lagos will become a world standard city.

Do you think Buhari will win in 2019?

I see him winning. No matter the imagination of our opponents, the chances of President Buhari are very bright. We are banking on the votes of the common Nigerians, not the elite that won’t come out to vote. Those asking Buhari not to re-contest ruled this country for eight years as civilian president and three years as military Head of State.

But, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders are boasting that they will take over Lagos State in 2019. What is your reaction?

The PDP has never been a threat to the APC in Lagos. Since 1999, they have been boasting of taking over power in the state. How can they take over Lagos when we are in power? When the PDP was in power at the centre for 16 years, they failed to win in Lagos. Even in 2003 when other states in the Southwest were taken over by the PDP, Lagos didn’t fall. It is day-dreaming for the PDP to be talking of taking over Lagos now.

We are happy and comfortable with the loyalty of the people to the APC in Lagos State. The strength of our party lies in the fulfilment of promises right from the tenure of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Anyway, we are not taking them for granted. We are working hard to double what we promised the electorates. I don’t know what magic wand Bode George and his colleagues would apply to win Lagos. To me, it is wishful thinking. Is it now that most of their leaders are in the APC that they would take over Lagos? It is not possible.

What is responsible for the narrow margin win in Lagos by the APC in the 2015  poll?

It was due to influence of money. We have heard the revelations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that the $2.5 billion meant for buying arms and ammunition to fight terrorists in the Northeast were doled out to PDP bigwigs for 2015 general elections. You will also recall that former President Goodluck Jonathan relocated to Lagos seven weeks before the election, bribing Tom, Dick and Harry, Christian and Muslim clerics as well in order to win the election. Besides, Ifeanyi Uba, a businessman and confidant of Jonathan brought trailer loads of rice to bribe people of Lagos to ensure PDP victory at all costs. When men of God saw money, they jumped at it and started making false prophetic statements.

No opposition party can survive the on-slaught that the APC experienced in Lagos State in 2015. If not for the resilience of Bola Tinubu and other leaders, the story would have been different. Even if we had won with only one vote, it was a sweet victory. We didn’t have money to fight the PDP; billions of naira was available to them; we just managed the little resources we had. It was the confidence and loyalty of the people that worked in our favour and this will continue to be there for the APC.

Why the low turn-out of voters in Lagos in 2015?

People thought their votes won’t count, given the slush funds deployed to Lagos by the PDP. They lost confidence in the electoral process. That apart, the big men living in Ikoyi and Victoria Island consider the day of election as public holiday. They don’t come out to perform their civic responsibility, instead they will sleep. Ironically, they will be the first to criticise government policies. Why not join people in electing their leaders? If you refuse to vote, you will get the type of government you deserve. You can’t be a good Nigerian when you shirk your responsibility.

Most of these big men don’t have Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC). When a disciplined party emerges, they turn ardent critics. They should keep quiet because when we need them they were not there. When they see government doing something good, they will go on television to pull it down.

The APC National Executive Committee had over ruled the NWC over tenure elongation. How are you preparing for the congresses?

There was no quest for tenure elongation. I am the Chairman of the states’ APC chairmen. There was never a time we called for tenure elongation.  Considering the time factor, we suggested that a caretaker committee should handle the affairs of the party for one year to forestall disputes and litigations that might likely follow the result of congresses and convention. We made this suggestion against the backdrop of the PDP 2014 congresses and convention that threw the party into turmoil.

However, the APC had resolved the issue amicably. With maturity, both sides were able to resolve the issue. I am sure the process will go on smoothly. I have the confidence that the congresses and the convention will be rancour -free. Members of the APC will unite and win the 2019 elections.

Can’t the APC use the same wisdom to reconcile the Executive and the Legislature at the centre to ensure party cohesion?

It is too late. We should wait for another National Assembly. We shall get it right in the next dispensation. There won’t be animosity. The right people would be placed in the right place.

The cold war has been on for long. Can you imagine that the APC controls both chambers in the National Assembly, yet government bills and policies don’t sail through. The intervention of the leaders will be desirable, so that the party can curtail the excesses of the legislature. What is happening in the National Assembly is diversionary. Let’s allow sleeping dogs to lie.

Do you think all is well with the party now?

I don’t think we have solved all the problems. There are those who failed in their plan to destroy the APC. They didn’t succeed and we know they are still plotting to destabilise the party. But, God is on the side of the APC.

The loyalty of many of the APC members in the National Assembly is suspect. What they are doing is one leg in and another leg out. Their souls are no longer in the APC. At the time when the heat became unbearable for them in their former party (PDP), we embraced them and treated them equally with the founding members of the APC.  They had thought that the issue of tenure elongation for the NWC members would lead to implosion, so that they will have an excuse to leave the APC and join the new political movement they have been romancing with.

They should go and let us know how many people remain in the APC. When Atiku Abubakar quit the party, heaven didn’t fall. Their exit will be good riddance to bad rubbish.

  • Nigerians should expect progress in 2019, says Ajomale

Nigerians should expect progress in 2019, says Ajomale

Nigerians have been told to expect more development in 2019 if the All Progressives Congress (APC) is voted into power once again. Speaking at the official defection of some notable leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State into the ruling party, held at the party’s state secretariat in Ikeja, the state capital, Otunba Henry Ajomale, APC chairman in the state, pointed out that President Muhammadu Buhari is doing all he can to ensure that Nigeria does not go back to the dark days.

The APC boss, while congratulating the defectors for taking the right decisions, said the president and the ruling party are working hard to make Nigeria a better place to live. “Progress in economy, education, health, employment sectors are not things you can achieve in a day and we are happy we’ve performed better than those that were there for 16 years, not minding the challenges,” he said.

The coming of the defectors to APC, according to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in the state, Lola Akande, will no doubt make the work of APC much easier during the next general election. “These people are respected grassroots politicians and we are glad to welcome them into our party. Others are still free to come and join us,” she said.

  • Ajomale: no automatic ticket in Lagos APC

Ajomale: no automatic ticket in Lagos APC

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Otunba Oladele Ajomale, spoke with Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU on the Ambode administration, the agitation for special status for Lagos and his projections for the 2019 elections.

What is your assessment of the Ambode administration in the last two and half years?

The public is in a better position to judge what the governor has done. What I say may be misconstrued. They will say I am singing his praise of one of the chieftains of my party. But, as far as I am concerned, I believe Ambode has done tremendously well within a short time. Looking at the financial situation, he has done well in all spheres. He has been able to pay salaries, unlike other state governors. He has been able to pay salaries fully. He has been able to pay pensions fully. Infrastructural development in Lagos in the last two years cannot be compared with any state. He is working on the basis of the development that others have already consolidated. So, he is building on that.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu started the work of development. And Babatunde Fashola also made his own impact in Lagos, in terms of physical development from day one when he took over the leadership of Lagos State. Ambode has done a fantastic job that a lot of people cannot believe. May be, it is because of his background; a chartered accountant, somebody who knows the management of resources, an economist. I think that is why he excels than any other governor. Since 1999, Lagos governors have been ahead. Ambode is on course. We now have standard bus stops all over Laos. Very son, the rail line will be completed and that will be another feat. He has lived up to expectation. The promises we made during the campaigns, people expected him to fulfill them. I think he has even exceeded the target. Honestly, I salute the governor of Lagos for the incredible job he has done. There is no government in any part of the federation that has done half of what he has done. People may say you have resources. People are paying tax. You are getting money from here and there. But, the management of that resources is a key issue. If someone has been diverting the money like the PDP, there will not be any development. The core issue is that the money is being used in the right way. We are feeling the development in all aspects; in health, infrastructure, education, in everything. We have to salute the governor for the courage and the vision he has for Lagos State.

How is your party monitoring his government?

We do that. We have a committee. When we see that something is wrong, we write a letter immediately to them so that they can correct it. We sometimes, invite the commissioners, who will willingly come to us to answer our call because they are members of the party anyway. We ask questions and give them a feedback on what the people expect of them. We are also like the door; we see the front and the back. We always communicate with them. We write reports and send to them. They send a report back. We talk about the way the market is being demolished. We discuss with the Ministry of Physical Planning. We ask them to give people sufficient time before the demolition so that they can prepare. Without doing that, they may lose faith in us. We don’t want anything to affect us during the election. I am satisfied that the people of Lagos State are satisfied with the activities of the government. He is fulfilling his campaign promises. So, he deserves our support.

How accountable are your elected state and federal lawmakers to the party?

The House of Representatives and Senate members are accountable. They come to Lagos to give the account of their stewardship. They hold town hall meetings to brief their constituents on their activities. All our senators have been giving accounts and they have feedback on their activities. They also organise empowerment programmes for their constituencies. All the three senators have done that last year. And the House of Representatives have also done that in their various constituencies. It is a feedback. Senator Oluremi did it more than five times last year. She has been reporting back to her people and empowering some people. The lawmakers answer questions from their constituents. They have been briefing us about what is going on in Abuja. The House of Assembly members also call meetings in their constituencies to brief them about their activities in the House, their resolutions, the bills that have been passed. They also do empowerment programmes.

Is the party reminding the federal lawmakers that they should continue their agitations for a special status for Lagos?

Yes. We have even held a special meeting on that. You will recall that Mrs. Tinubu has been raising the issue in the Senate. Most of us gave her support and encouraged her to go ahead, to represent the bill. The over-zealousness on the part of some of our senators killed the bill. She is representing it on the basis of dialogue. You have to talk to your colleagues and convince them, and whatever insult you get, you just go on because of what you want. But, the opinion of other senators matters. You will use a bit of diplomacy to get things done. We are on top of the situation. We have asked her to represent it. We are supporting her. Anybody in Lagos cannot oppose that laudable thing. The special status ought to have been granted long time ago. In other countries, that is what is done. They don’t abandon their former federal capital. Today, if you go to Abdijan, they have moved the capital to Yamasukoro. But, Abidjan still remains the economic nerve centre of Cote de Voir. Rio is still the most advantageous, and the tourist centre in Brazil. Countries don’t abandon their former federal capitals. But, in Nigeria, they carried their bags and baggage and leave the Lagos State government to manage the liabilities. That is why we want devolution of powers. You must return to the states the powers you took from them. The military took over power and impose the structure of the military. We are still using the same structure of the military. We want true federalism. Anybody who becomes the president will prefer the current structure to have absolute power, which is not supposed to be. And when you devolve power to the states, you don’t stay in Abuja and say those at the state cannot touch the federal roads. Why don’t you leave those roads to the states and allow the states to manage the roads that have been constructed?  You are building a road; you should concentrate on the link road between a state and the other. The Federal Government is neglecting federal roads in states. No responsible state government will allow its people to suffer because of the roads. Out of the meagre amount that they have, they have to use some money to repair the federal roads. If they have left it for them, people will know that whether they can maintain them or not, that is their business.

How do you view the agitation for an automatic second term ticket for your governor in some quarters?

Even, if you do more than what the governor has done, nothing is automatic. Let the people review you again on the basis of what you have done. You should not entertain fear about second term. What has to be done has to be done. If we don’t do it correctly now, some people will come tomorrow and bastardise it. We must uphold the institutions of democracy. There is no automatic second term. Once the people prefer you, you may even go unopposed. You may be there at the primary unopposed and nobody objects to it. But, the process must be followed.

How is the party pacifying aggrieved members who are unhappy about the alleged lapses in the selection processes for the local government elections?

Majority of them have been pacified. The major problem is that life has changed. A lot of people now take politics as a full time job. Today, it seems that politics is the only job available now. People have turned it into a do or die affair. They must be there at all cost. You find a chartered accountant wanting to be a councillor, a member of the House. Why? Can’t you use your profession for something better? If you become a councillorship aspirant and you don’t become a candidate, you are annoyed. You have been to the four walls of the university, you should be able to use your brain to work, to diversify and be successful in life. Politics is not the only thing you can do in life. If you come out of the university and you think the first thing you should do is fighting for an elective or appointive position, then, you are not doing yourself any good. Some people will even resign from their job to go and contest. When they fail, they are jobless. What happens? That’s why they create unnecessary problem for the party. The party cannot field everybody. By INEC or LASIEC law, only one person can represent a constituency. It cannot be two. So I appeal to our youths. There are many things outside for them to do, instead of killing themselves over politics and turning it into a do or die affair. You are lawyer. You have acquired certain knowledge. You can use that to better your life. Not everybody will have to be elected or appointed. Some people turn it into violence at the primary. If you are not selected, there is nothing you can do. The PDP caused it. In politics, they are able to steal money. I was in the civil service for 18 years. Honestly, apart from my salary, and possibly estacode, when I went to represent government, as a diplomat, I lived on my salary. We had no contract. We lived according to the amount of money we received as salary. Many of us who had retired and not ready to go into politics are surviving. I decided to resign then to start my legal practice before I joined politics by chance. I would have survived like my friends. You say you want to serve. You are not elected. You want to do it by force. Then, you are not serving. It is the motive behind it that you are looking at.

In the 2015 elections, your part lost some grounds in the House of Assembly and Representatives elections. What are you doing to regain the lost grounds?

We have already regained them. We thank God. The last local government election vindicated us. Some of those places won by the PDP were won because of money. Ifeanyi Ubah was responsible for distributing money and materials. Most of those areas are occupied by Ibos. But, they don’t usually disturb us during elections. You see them playing football during election. But, when you entice them with money, televisions, radios, fans from his warehouse in Amuwo Odofin, they were able to win those areas; Okota, Ajeromi, Ejigbo, Isolo, Osodi. That’s the circle. The PDP cannot play a clean game. The same thing they did at their national convention. They were distributing money openly and distributing papers to delegates. All the money they have stolen, they will continue to use it to create problem.

By the time you leave as the chairman of the party, what are the qualities you expect from your successor?

I think he should be prayerful and he should have a milk of human kindness. If you are prayerful and you have a milk of human kindness, then, half of the battle would have been won. You must have listening ears. Most of the time the members are outside there and I have to see them. I see not less than 35 people every day. At times, they are more than that. They come with all sorts of problems-lack of money, money to pay their landlords. You pity them. When they are going back, some of them will say they don’t even have money to transport themselves. If you have about N100,000, you should be able to distribute about N70,000 and keep N30,000. Most of the times, I go home with about N5,000. So, you must be able to accept them. If everybody rejects them, they should have the feeling that they have a father somewhere.

What are those problems you have in Lagos State which you want the Federal Government to assist the state in solving?

There are so many things. They have started, but I pray they complete it on time. This Apapa/Osodi Expressway. This is the hotbed of commerce in Lagos State. They can complete that. If they give us a special status and commensurate resources to maintain what they left behind, that is one thing. We should be considered as one of the six states of commerce. They are making a loyt of money from Lagos ports. There must be a certain amount that should be given to Lagos State. All our roads are destroyed. People are inconvenienced. In the United States, ports belong to local government. So, whatever they are making out of it, the local government gets its own portion. Not to talk of Benin Republic and Badagry route. They are making money from that too and Lagos is not getting a kobo. All these things are being operated in Lagos State. Rivers State can benefit from it. Warri can benefit from it. They have ports. But, the concentration is in Lagos; Tin Can Island and Apapa Wharff. The money coming from them does not come to Lagos. The trailers go through our roads. If they are getting oil from some states and they are getting 13 per cent derivation. Are they not deriving money from Lagos State? It is also derivation. If they pay the Federal Government, why don’t they pay Lagos? That is the question that deserves urgent answer. Lagos accommodates all ethnic groups. Lagos is where the commerce is. All the banks and institutions are here making money. So, I want to appeal to the Federal Government that these things have to be looked into.

2019: No automatic ticket in Lagos APC, says Ajomale

Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman Otunba Oladele Ajomale yesterday said the party will not give automatic ticket to its elected functionaries in the executive and legislature for 2029 elections.

He said the party would continue to nurture and defend the institutions which give content, form and predictability to democracy.

Reflecting on his tenure, the chairman said he was fortunate to lead the political family to victory on three occasions, stressing that his successor will also cope and survive through hard work and prayers.

Ajomale spoke at the party office along Acme Road, Ogba, Ikeja on the performance of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, the party’s interface with the administration, the agitation for special status by Lagos and preparations for future elections.

He paid tribute to Ambode for his giant strides, saying he had done the party proud by building on the foundation built by his predecessors, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

He said Ambode had converted Lagos in a huge construction site, adding that his achievements are visible in many critical sectors, including education, health, transportation and other forms of social welfare.

Ajomale also praised the state and federal lawmakers on the platform of the Lagos APC for their sense of mission and accountability, singling out Senator Oluremi Tinubu (Lagos Central) as an embodiment of accountability and fidelity to the chapter.

However, Ajomale said there will be no automatic ticket for any elected functionary, maintaining that the democratic system of selection would be adopted to pick flag bearers.

The chairman said the party is monitoring those who got to public offices on its platform by insisting that they should toe the party line and implement its campaign promises to the electorate.

He said hardworking, disciplined and loyal elected officials will secure ticket at the primary where they will receive the votes of delegates, adding that they have nothing to fear.

He said the party will insist on the constitutional and legitimate method of picking candidates, even where many of the candidates are unopposed.

Ajomale said: “There will be no automatic ticket for anybody. Those who have worked hard have nothing to fear. We are building institutions of democracy. We will employ the constitutional method to select and observe internal democracy. Even, if the person is standing unopposed, we will still pass through the process.”

The chairman chided people for perceiving politics as a veritable occupation, instead of using their certificates, brains and hands on other productive ventures. He said the struggle for few elective slots by many aspirants have led to participation crisis, do-or-die politics and politics of bitterness.

The chairman revisited the agitation for a special status for Lagos, urging the Federal Government to accord priority to the agenda.

He hailed Senator Oluremi Tinubu for spearheading the clamour in the National Assembly and called for the understanding of other legislators to achieve the goal.

Ajomale said Lagos deserved a special status as a former federal capital, recalling that many countries that have relocated their capitals have not neglected the former capitals.

He described Lagos as the commercial nerve centre and economic capital of Nigeria, which should receive 13 percent derivation, owing to quantum of money made from its two ports by the Federal Government.

Noting that Lagos State plays host to many Nigerians from across the 35 states and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ajomale said it deserve special funding because it shoulders enormous national, sub-regional and continental responsibilities.

He added: “There is no family or state that is not represented in Nigeria. You can see the population. There are Hausa, Ibibio in Lagos. Look at the ports. The long vehicles have spoilt our roads. It is the responsibility of state government to now repair them. The oil-producing states collect 13 percent derivation. Lagos also deserves derivation, based on the huge money made from its ports.”

Ajomale peeped into the future, saying that APC will recover lost grounds in 2019 elections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said the success of the APC at the recent council polls showed that the PDP used money and materials to entice people to vote for its candidates in the last elections.

Ajomale listed the qualities expected from his successor, saying that he should be hardworking and prayerful.

He added: “The person should be very hardworking and prayerful. You must be passionate. I receive at least 35 people in this office daily. They come from far and near with their problems. If I come to office with N100,000, I can hardly go back without spending N70,000. They will say they need jobs, foods, accommodation, transport fares. You cannot close your eyes to these as a leader.”

  • Ajomale: we’ll win elections for Ambode, Tinubu

    •Governor begs aggrieved party members

The All Progressives Congress (APC) will sweep Saturday’s local government election, its Lagos State Chairman, Chief Henry Ajomale, has said.

Ajomale said on Tuesday night that the party’s victory at the polls would be a befitting gift to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and its National leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

During the presentation of flags to the chairman and vice chairmanship candidates, at the Banquet Hall of Lagos House, Ajomale said the party had worked hard in the last few months to ensure victory for its candidates.

He said it was imperative for the party to maintain its grip so as to complement the governor’s efforts to deliver more dividends of democracy to every part of the state.

“Nothing is going to stop us. By the grace of God we are going to win the elections. Come Saturday, get ready and use your available opportunities and your leadership role to win for our candidates and we know, for the governor and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu our leader, we must win the election as a gift to both of them.

“I said it before, we are going to give the governor the whole package, the total package, all the councillors, all the chairmen are going to be handed over to the governor,” Ajomale said.

Ambode appealed to aggrieved party members to bury the hatchet, noting that any crack would be detrimental to the progress of not just the party but the state in general.

He said: “All the things that we have done wrong, I want to say sorry, and I want to appeal to all members of the party. If we break the house, there would be no further canopy. So it’s better to call the plumber, the bricklayer, the electrician to come and do repair works, so that there would be somewhere for us to lie our head and sleep.

“I know there have been a lot of misgivings that have taken place, but what is important is for us to build the house together, thereafter we can do aesthetics to the windows and the doors so that those who are standing would be able to sit.

“This is like a gathering of peaceful co-existence. Wherever it is that we have had cracks, there are still more than a 1001 positions to compensate and also placate them that left in a negative way,” the Governor said.

He urged the candidates to go all out and ensure total victory for the party, saying that would ensure the giant strides geared towards moving the state forward remains on course in the years ahead.

“It is better to cement the next four years through these Chairmen and also complement the efforts of the next two years so that we can get another six years. So if we decide because of disagreement or misunderstanding to destroy just two years out of eight years, there would be nothing left to show for the efforts.

“A win for the party in all the elective positions would also sustain the virtues which Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu stands for. This course is a course for the Asiwaju dynasty. So we stand up today to say that we are here to defend that dynasty in totality.”
