Olusola Ajala: My strength comes from being born and raised in Akala

Razaq Olusola Ajala is the Chairman of Odi Olowo/ Ojuwoye LCDA and Secretary General of Conference 57.

In this interview with Yetunde Oladeinde, he goes down memory lane talking about his humble background, growing up in the Akala neighborhood in Mushin, falling in love with politics as a schoolboy, how he met his wife, and touching and changing lives amongst others.

Let’s talk about three things that are very important in your life.

If not for politics, I would have been a private person. That is why it is very convenient for me. I can attend 12 or 13 functions a day because I won’t spend more than 5 or 10 minutes. I am not going there because of the melody of the music or because I want to dance or what I want to eat. I am going there because I see the celebrator as an important or integral part of me. No matter how tight my schedule is, I must ensure I attend. Number two is that I am a lover of my family.

When I say family man, I am not talking about my nuclear family. I believe that if God in his infinite mercy can raise you to attain the position that He has positioned you, then use that platform to attend to the basic needs of the people within (family) and around you (friends and associates). The people came out in their numbers to give me the mandate to be a councillor, vice chairman, and now Chairman.

Hence, my political philosophy is ‘common people for common benefit’. I believe that everything I have, I should spread it. I should try as much as I can to accommodate everyone. The third thing that people don’t know about me?

Well, I won’t say people don’t know that I love my wife because if I didn’t love her, I would not have married her. In order of importance, she comes first after God.

How did you meet your wife?

I met her in my brother, Barr Ishmael Yaya’s. He was the former Secretary of Mushin Local Government and former SA to the Governor of Lagos State. That day, I just saw a lady walk in majestically and it was love at first sight. There and then, I told them that I loved her. Then someone said even if you love her, this woman would never say ‘yes’. Why? Because I was raised in Akala in Mushin. That is the area people use to profile or define Mushin.  To most of the people, nothing good can come out of Akala. So given her background economically, they knew that we were miles apart. Also, she had an independent room to herself; and her mother, not to talk of her father, could point to one or two houses. So, they couldn’t imagine such a lady saying yes to me, a poor boy from Akala.  But I was persistent. On her way home, I followed her and when she got home, she told the mallam (the security man), to shut the gate against me.

The third thing about me is that if I believe in a cause, I give it my all. I remember when I contested for the House of Assembly in 2007. All I had in the whole Lagos State were two plots of land, which I sold to prosecute my ambition, even though I knew I could lose. Back to my wife, I had profiled her and found out that she went to her mum’s shop every morning and closed at a particular time. I did this for 11 years; we courted for that long. I even traveled as far as Offa to look for her.

What was the attraction? Her beauty?

Not her beauty or friends; but the fact that theirs was a family that had its own needs they were training their maids as if they were their children; people they brought from Kwara State; they were sending them to primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions. I see in my wife, a very religious and reserved person. We also have something in common, which is having a sound family balance. This, among several other factors, actually endeared her to me. And if it is about intellect she has it. Of course, she was pretty. So I made up my mind to marry this lady from the Ojulari family. Even, the fact that people were saying her mother was tough didn’t deter me.

Have you ever regretted growing up in Akala?

Never! That is where my strength politically comes from. That is where my strength economically lies, and that is where my strength academically lies. Why do I say this?

If you were born and raised in our area, you have the privilege to be brilliant. You have one thing, which is the support of people in the area. They are street-wise and smart. There is a high possibility that if an Akala boy goes to a job interview with someone from another area, he will beat the person and take firm control. He will combine his street smartness with the knowledge acquired in the four walls of the academic environment. There are some questions that your brilliance would not help you but your smartness will take you through.

Elections are not around the corner, yet you’re engrossed in empowerment; what inspires you?

I think everything boils down to my background; if not for God and his grace, I would not be where I am today. I am from a humble background and know how people live or operate within that space because I have tasted it. Now, that God has catapulted me to this enviable height, I would resonate all the opportunities that come my way to everybody with special emphasis on the ordinary people.

What is the worth of the empowerment that you are embarking on at the moment?

It is over N250 million. I have divided all the people here into different strata and that is what defines the programmes for each of the strata. For the youths, we are doing sports; for the students, we have quiz competitions and for the women we have grants. Also, for small and medium-scale entrepreneurs, we have loan facilities while for the vulnerable, we have subsidised chickens which go for N6,500. They will get for N2,500. The open market for rams during ileya is 50,000 to 60, 000 naira but we sell it for 25,000.  I know what it means for your neighbour to eat turkey and you cannot afford chicken. Back in those days, if our parents bought chicken, we would jump up and go out with the chicken leg for neighbours to see.

What dreams did you have as a young boy?

Honestly speaking, my dream from my secondary school days, has always been to be a politician. Our government teacher, Mr. Ojelabi, used to call me Sarumi the governor. Then there were usually hot arguments between Sarumi and Agbalajobi and I always wanted Sarumi to be the Governor. One of my best subjects in school then was Government. There was a particular examination where they asked what Sovereignty was. I defined what it was politically, economically, and legally and my teacher told me that he didn’t ask for all of that. Also, I remember that as a primary school student, when Awolowo came to campaign in the now Mushin Local Government, we left school to see him. I lost my food cooler that day amid the crowd. All because I wanted to see Awolowo.

Did you ever think of the flipside of politics; I mean the hazards?

Of course, as a politician, you have to think about that. But I was born and raised in Mushin. My wife is my prayer warrior, my spiritual warrior. From the very day she said yes, she did not turn back. Our marriage is over twenty years now. My boy would be 21 this year, I got married at 30.

Looking back, are you happy that you decided to go into politics?

Yes. I always thank God that I took the decision. God in his infinite mercy has used me, and the various positions that I have held, to make a meaningful impact. As a councilor, before any government started to pay money for WAEC or GCE, I was the first to give free 100 forms to indigent students back in the year 2000. I did it when I was still living with my parents as a councilor. Then I could afford over 3 million naira to organise tutorial classes. Jika Atto was the one who came to the heart of Akala to take English during my tutorial programmes. I went as far as the Cambridge Coaching Centre at GRA for Mathematics teachers. I went for the best teachers that were around. Apart from giving them the form, I wanted to get a commensurate result, giving the quantum of my investment. Most of the people who benefitted then, most of them are now doctors in America. Some are working with British organisations, and I know one working with the NNPC. So, that to me, is my joy and satisfaction.

JUST IN: Two die, property razed as inferno guts late Akala’s residence

No fewer than two people were reportedly killed while valuables worth millions of Naira were also destroyed in a Monday morning inferno at one of the buildings in the Opadoyin compound of former governor of Oyo state, late Adebayo Alao-Akala.

According to a source, the inferno started around 7:50 am.

The source said a power surge is likely to be the cause of the inferno.

Another source, who was privy to the incident said he woke up at about 8 am when he noticed smoke from a part of the building but couldn’t fathom the cause.

Political associates, friends, and family members of the late ex-governor are said to have been visiting the residence in commiseration with the family.

  • APC: we didn’t bribe Akala to support us

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Southwest has declared that it did not bribe former governor of Oyo State Adebayo Alao-Akala to support its governorship candidate, Adebayo Adelabu in the Saturday election.

The party in a statement by its Zonal Secretary, Mr Ayo Afolabi, said such belief is being allegedly spread by agents of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which it described as corrupt.

The party said persuading Alao-Akala to support Adelabu was not a Herculean task being its former member.

The statement read: “It has come to the notice of our Party, the All Progressives Congress the unfounded rumor going round in the social media and in some blogs that the APC induced Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala with a huge amount of money for his support to sway him and his numerous supporters across Oyo State to the side of APC in the gubernatorial and states house of assembly elections scheduled for March 9, 2019.

“This type of allegation can only exist in the minds and imagination of heavily corrupt PDP and their supporters. It is out of place for APC to give financial inducement to anyone with a view to gain or get the support of any one talkless of a person of Akala’s calibre who was until some six month ago a strong member of our party. It is true that the party approached former Gov. Akala and appealed to him to lend a helping hand for the success of APC in Oyo State as did PDP in the coming elections, this is normal in democracy.

“Akala made some demands which include among others: the completion of the teaching hospital in Ogbomoso which he wanted to be put to immediate use as soon as possible, the issue of LAUTECH which he wanted the governments of APC to address immediately and other sundry issues which are the basic ingredients for good governance. For anybody or group of people to accuse our party of offering money to former Governor Akala is share blackmail which can only exist in the imagination of the writer.

“We therefore enjoin the public to ignore such ranting of lazy minds whose only intention is to play politics with the integrity of our party and confuse the public.”

  • Akala rejoins APC, dumps gubernatorial ambition

A former Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, has returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He is the governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in the March 9 governorship election.

The former governor, The Nation learnt, made the decision earlier today after meeting the APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in Abuja and Lagos.

A reliable source within the party confirmed that the Ogbomoso-born politician will make a statement on his new decision today for his supporters across the state to understand the reasons for his move ahead of the March 9 governorship and House of Assembly election.

His return to the APC will deal a heavy blow on the alliance he was leading among opposition parties against the governing party in the state.

He was leading an alliance between ADP, African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Prior to the election, Akala had vowed that all opposition parties would do anything to end to the reins of the APC in the state.

But the intervention of Tinubu and other national leaders made him change his mind.

The former governor left the APC last October to pick the governorship ticket of the ADP.

He is widely believed to have influenced the victory of the PDP in Ogbomoso Zone in the February 23 presidential election.

  • Akala: count me out of alliance against APC candidate Adelabu

The governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, has said he will not join other opposition candidates to form an alliance against the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Adebayo Adelabu.

Alao-Akala, who is a former governor, said he was not working for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate or any other for an alliance, as reported in some sections of the media.

Speaking through his campaign organisation yesterday, the ADP candidate said the reports were aimed at “misinforming and confusing our teeming supporters the world over”.

The statement by the Director General of the campaign organisation, Chief Wale Ohu, reads: “At a time, the rumour in town was that he was not serious about his governorship ambition and that he was going to play the role of a spoiler or work for another governorship candidate.

“The most recent is that he is working for the PDP governorship candidate, Seyi Makinde.

“The Akala Campaign Organisation hereby debunks all these insinuations. They are the handiwork of the propaganda machinery of the government in power in Oyo State, which is jittery and overwhelmed by the soaring popularity of Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala and to state clearly that the former governor is committed to taking the people of Oyo State out of the political mess they have been plunged by the insensitive APC government of Senator Abiola Ajimobi since he left office eight years ago.

“Otunba Alao-Akala has toured the nooks and crannies of Oyo State, taking the message of hope to the citizenry, which was received with enthusiasm by the people.

“Alao-Akala is not into any discussion, alliance or talks with the PDP governorship candidate Makinde or any other for that matter.

  • Akala‘s son suspended as Ogbomoso council chair

The Chairman of Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Hon. Olamiju Alao-Akala, has been suspended from office.

He is the son of former governor and governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala.

Olamiju was elected chairman along with 56 others on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

But he dumped the party last week to join his father in the ADP.

His suspension may not be unconnected with the defection.

A letter signed by four councillors in the council said he was suspended for gross misconduct, adding the decision was taken after a legislative council plenary on Friday.

Meanwhile, the suspended council boss has urged people to be calm, stressing that he remains the chairman of the local government.

His words: “The development is not only illegal but also a comedy script written by the power that be and acted by amateur actors and actresses involved”

Reacting to the development on Facebook, Alao-Akala’s camp alleged the councillors were forced to sign the suspension order by Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Alao-Akala quoted Hon. Adebowale Oyejoke, one of those who signed the resolution, as saying that they were summoned to Government House where they were ordered to sign the prepared resolution in the presence of the governor.

  • Akala, Makinde condemn election postponement

The governorship candidates of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala and Oluseyi Makinde respectively, have condemned the postponement of the 2019 elections. In separate statements, they described the postponement as sad and unfortunate. While Makinde accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being behind the decision, Akala expressed worry on its cost to Nigerians.

According to Alao-Akala, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) took Nigerians for granted by not caring about the cost of the postponement which was announced at the “last minute”. He said it was a disgraceful and inconsiderate act considering the stress that people had gone through just to have a successful exercise.

His words: “I am sad, it is unfortunate that election will be postponed a few hours to the commencement of the exercise. I am sorry for Nigeria; we should not be on this level at this period. what happens to the manpower already expended and human capital resource? Can you imagine what corp members drafted into the exercise were made to go through?  Did they even consider the loss many people will be forced to incur as a result of the unexpected change? Who pays for these losses and inconveniences?

Makinde appealed to foreign observers not to leave the country in frustration, alleging that  it was the exact aim the APC wanted to achieve. “In spite of having three  years to plan and numerous reassurances up till last week,  INEC waited till five hours to the commencement of the election before announcing its cancellation,” he said. He said a huge amount of money had been expended before the exercise was postponed.

  • Man scales church fence to steal N120, 000 microphone engine

A 20-year-old computer operator, Gabriel Emmanuel, who allegedly scaled the fence of a church at night and stole N120,000 microphone engine, was on Thursday hauled up before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The accused was arraigned before the Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Tanimola, on a charge of stealing.

Emmanuel, who resides at Akala, Mushin, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty and was admitted to a bail of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Tanimola said the surety should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Police Prosecutor Aondohemba Koti had told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 3 at Olateju, Mushin, Lagos.

He said the accused stole a microphone engine valued at N120, 000, property of Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Mushin.

“The accused scaled the fence at night to gain access to the church premises and stole the engine.

“As he was about to escape through the fence, the security guard sighted him and raised alarm, shouting ‘thief, thief’.

“The accused was apprehended with the help of some members, who were sleeping in the church after the vigil.

“The stolen item was recovered and the accused was handed over to the police,” Koti said.

The offence violated Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the offence carries a penalty of three years imprisonment.

Further hearing has been fixed for June 20.

  • N11.5b ‘fraud’: Akala, senator, businessman take EFCC to Supreme Court

A former Governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, former Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Ayoola Agboola and a businessman, Mr. Femi Babalola, have taken the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the Supreme Court over allegation of N11.5 billion fraud.

The move by the trio stalled the commencement of trial in the case that was scheduled to start on Monday before Justice Muniru Owolabi of an Oyo State High Court, holden at Iyaganku, Ibadan.

According to the EFCC, the alleged fraud was committed when the first defendant, Alao-Akala, was governor of the state between 2007 and 2011.

Agboola, the second defendant, at the time served as commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, while Babalola owns an engineering firm, Pentagon Engineering Services that executed some contracts during the administration.

At the court yesterday, counsel to Alao-Akala and Babalola, Mr. Hakeem Afolabi (SAN), moved two applications before Justice Owolabi, informing the court that his clients have filed an interlocutory appeal on the matter before the Supreme Court, seeking an adjournment of the case in order to await the decision of the apex court.

He said the applications dated April 7 and filed on April 9, were filed on 10 grounds, praying the court to allow the defendants to go, and “should be told not to return to sin, though they are not sinners.”

He relied on some earlier pronouncements of the Supreme Court, including Amaechi versus Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Pastor Richard Ogunwole (SAN), who is the counsel to the second defendant, Ayoola Agboola, aligned himself with the two applications moved in the court, saying the interlocutory appeal in the Supreme Court would terminate the proceedings at the high court entirely, if it succeeds.

He urged the court to “tarry a little, not resting it,” in continuing with the case so that it would not run on collision course against the apex court.

But the EFCC’S counsel, Dr. Benedict Ubi, opposed the adjournment, arguing that granting the application would amount to “a violent violation of the Constitution of Nigeria, ” relying on the pronouncement of the Supreme Court in the case of Olisa Metuh versus Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He urged the court to disregard the applications and go on with the case.

Justice Owolabi, however, adjourned the case till June 4 for ruling on the applications, whether the court would await the decision of the Supreme Court or it would continue with the trial while the interlocutory appeal is still pending in the apex court.

The EFCC on October 11, 2011 filed the matter before Justice Moshood Abass of the court and the defendants were admitted to bail, which they perfected.

Justices Akintunde Boade and Bayo Taiwo, had also sat on the case before the former retired and the latter transferred out of Ibadan Division.

Alao-Akala was admitted to bail at N5 million with two sureties, while the second and third defendants were also granted bail at N3 million each with two sureties.

But the three defendants were re-arraigned before Justice Owolabi on March 5, 2018, over the same matter by the EFCC.

The trio pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

Counsel to the defendants urged the court to allow their clients to enjoy the previous bail condition granted to them, which was granted by the court.

The defendants are facing an 11-count charge of conspiracy, awarding contract without budgetary provision, obtaining by false pretence, acquiring property with money derived from illegal act and concealing the ownership of such property, among others.

The EFCC’s counsel, Dr Benedict Ubi, had told the court that when Alao-Akala was the governor of Oyo State, he awarded a road contract worth N8.5billion between 2007 and 2009 to Pentagon Engineering Services, alleging further that the firm handled the contract on behalf of the 33 local governments  without budgetary provision.

Alao-Akala, he contended, ordered the supply of drilling machines on behalf of the 33 local governments worth N3.5billion, saying Alao-Akala purportedly conspired with Ayoola to withdraw N2.9 billion from Oyo State Local Government Joint Account.

  • Tinubu, Ajimobi, welcome Akala, Folarin, others to APC on Oyo governor’s 68th birthday

Tinubu, Ajimobi, welcome Akala, Folarin, others to APC on Oyo governor’s 68th birthday

The National Leader  of  All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, two other governors and other chieftains  of the party yesterday formally received  the immediate past  governor of the  State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, former Senate leader, Senator  Teslim Folarin and other top politicians  to the APC.

Alao-Akala’s deputy while in office, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, the only Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member of the House of Representatives from the state, Dokun Odebunmi, and a host of others to the party were received at a massive rally at Mapo Hall, Ibadan

The rally was to also celebrate the 68th birthday of Governor Ajimobi.

Addressing the huge crowd of party supporters and others who defied the scorching sun to witness the event, Tinubu said the APC has all it takes to accommodate the political heavyweights joining its fold.

Other defectors were a  former Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Ayodele Adigun, the immediate past PDP State Chairman, Yinka Taiwo and five Accord Party members in the state House of Assembly.

Also joining the APC were  former Speaker of the state assembly, Ashimiyu Alarape; a former member in the House of Representatives, Kamil Akinlabi; a former Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Kehinde Olaosebikan; Senator  Brimoh Yussuf; former PDP woman leader, Mrs. Olanrewaju Otiti, Folake Olunloyo, Rauf Olaniyan, Lukeman Oorelope and Kemi Jaiyeoba, among others.

With the calibre of the new members, Tinubu and Ajimobi said opposition was dead in the state.

The rally was attended by Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola and his Ondo State counterpart, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the National Vice Chairman (Southwest), Chief Pius Akinyelure and the Deputy National Chairman (South), Segun Oni.

Tinubu said the APC has “a stainless kitchen” that is large enough to accommodate as many cooks as possible.

Allaying fears on how to manage the political differences of the political heavyweights joining the party, Tinubu noted that the APC has a variety of menu in the political kitchen for the future of the country.

He said: “We have a stainless kitchen and we can accommodate as many cooks as possible and because we have a variety of menu in the political kitchen of planning this future, we love those bigwigs and we can accommodate them all. It is in the same forest that you find a hippo that you find an elephant and you will find a rabbit. In political platforms, you must look for the addition not the minus.

“You can see that the opposition is dead in Oyo State.  Today is important for us because it is the birthday of the Governor Ajimobi and things that have never happened in the history of Oyo State have started happening.

“Thank God for my friend Alao-Akala and the others for seeing the light. All of you that joined will also join in building the party. The APC house is great for all of us. We are proud of you for joining us. APC is the only progressive party in Nigeria and Africa.”

He pointed out that it has become very clear that APC would win in 2019.

While welcoming the defectors in their separate remarks, Aregbesola and Akeredolu said  that the resources and experiences of the individuals would be useful to build a more formidable party ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Odebunmi said as the only elected PDP officer from Oyo State, his defection to the APC signaled its final death.

The lawmaker said he has found out that only the APC and Ajimobi have good programme for youths.

Alao-Akala said dynamism in politics requires that politicians move with time.

His words: “To God be the glory. I am moving with time. There is dynamism in politics. We have only one party now in Oyo State. To God be the glory.  There is no more PDP in Oyo State. Everywhere, it is APC. By God’s Grace, Oyo State is now fully APC. I thank Governor Ajimobi for making all the defection possible.

“He opened his arms all the way and supported efforts to bring people into the fold. By God’s grace, all the defectors have worked under me. The room Ajimobi gave us made all these possible. We shall work with him to move the party forward. We shall be good party members.”

Ajimobi described the event as one of the unprecedented incidents marking his tenure.

He called on politicians to forgive themselves of past sins and assured that they will not regret joining the APC.

Akala, Arapaja, Folarin and Odebunmi later held the APC flag and waved it to the crowd as a seal of their membership of the party.

APC Chairman in Oyo State, Chief Akin Oke welcomed the defectors, saying they should feel at home.

He said the presence of national officers and the governors at the welcome rally was significant.
