Adewole hails Akande at 87, describes ex-Osun governor as pillar of Nigeria’s democratic history

Former Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, has paid tribute to 87-year-old Chief Adebisi Akande, describing him as one of the enduring pillars of Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

In a statement, Adewole said the former Osun State governor remains “an elder whose life story is woven into the fabric of our nation’s political history, particularly in the South-West.”

He noted that despite humble beginnings, Akande rose through public service with discipline, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the common good.

Adewole recalled Akande’s tenure as governor of Osun State, highlighting his prudent management of resources, modest lifestyle, and exemplary accountability.

He said Akande demonstrated that leadership is defined by sacrifice, service, and legacy rather than personal comfort.

As Secretary of the Akande Foundation, Adewole described the elder statesman as a “bridge between generations,” noting his central role in shaping progressive politics in Nigeria—from the Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria to the Alliance for Democracy and later the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“His style of leadership—frank, principled, and consistent—has earned him both respect and admiration across political, ethnic, and religious lines. He is known for speaking the truth as he sees it, without malice, fear, or favour. In an age of political convenience, Chief Akande has remained a symbol of conviction.”

The ambassador-designate stated that at 87, Chief Akande is “a champion of progressive ideals and federalism, a custodian of the values of honesty, modesty, and hard work, a statesman whose name is synonymous with loyalty, courage, and service.

‘As we honour Chief Adebisi Akande at this remarkable milestone, we pray that God Almighty will continue to grant him good health, peace of mind, and strength. May his remaining years be filled with joy, and may the ideals he has stood for continue to inspire leaders today and generations yet unborn.

“Baba, at 87, you remain a guiding light. Nigeria salutes you. Osun celebrates you. History records you.”

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun (FUHSI), and APC chieftain, Prof. Wale Sulaiman, has celebrated Chief Abdulkareem Adebisi Bamidele Akande, describing the former Osun State Governor as one of the foremost living disciples of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

In a statement marking Chief Akande’s 87th birthday, Prof. Sulaiman said the elder statesman remains one of the last towering figures who not only drew direct inspiration from Chief Awolowo but has consistently upheld and promoted the Awolowo school of thought built on integrity, discipline, welfarism, and democratic socialism.

He noted that Chief Akande’s political life embodies the core of Awolowo’s philosophy, where public service is treated as a sacred obligation and leadership is anchored on accountability, service, and moral courage.

He described him as a custodian of principled governance whose conduct aligns with the values that shaped Western Nigeria’s legacy of free education, strong institutions, and responsible leadership.

Prof. Sulaiman further praised the former Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a statesman of uncommon depth, commending his calm intellect, historical insight, and ability to navigate complex political issues.

He stated that Chief Akande’s years in public service, particularly as governor and party leader, reflected remarkable discipline, fiscal responsibility, and the courage to make difficult decisions in the interest of the state and the nation.

He added that Chief Akande’s enduring relevance in national affairs underscores his clarity of thought and dedication to reform-focused leadership, making him a continual point of reference for young technocrats and reform-driven leaders across the country.

Recalling a recent birthday visit, Prof. Sulaiman said he was inspired by Chief Akande’s ever-refreshing perspectives on politics, governance, and nation-building, noting that age has only deepened his wisdom.

He described him as a national asset, mentor, and moral compass within the progressive fold.

Prof. Sulaiman joined other progressives, mentees, and Nigerians in celebrating Chief Bisi Akande, praying for continued good health, sound mind, and more years of impactful service to the country and humanity.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, on Friday paid glowing tributes to former Osun State Governor and elder statesman, Chief Bisi Akande, describing him as a pillar of Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

They spoke at the 87th birthday celebration of Chief Akande held in Ila-Orangun, Osun State, where they praised his lifelong commitment to democratic ideals, principled leadership and selfless service to the nation, noting that his contributions to Nigeria’s political development remain enduring and invaluable.

President Tinubu’s goodwill message was delivered by Senator Akume at the ceremony.

In the message, the President described Akande as a mentor whose wisdom and counsel have guided generations of political leaders through difficult moments in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Secretary Government of the Federation (SGF) on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, he said the nation owes the elder statesman a debt of gratitude for his sacrifices and steadfast belief in democratic governance, praying for continued good health, strength and peace for him.

President Tinubu also expressed confidence that Akande’s legacy of integrity and patriotism would continue to illuminate Nigeria’s path towards unity, stability and progress.

In his personal goodwill message, Akume described Chief Akande as an embodiment of courage, humility and unwavering commitment to democratic values, noting that his service to the nation has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political history.

Recalling their political collaboration, Akume said they jointly launched a deliberate strategy aimed at dismantling the dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West. He explained that the effort was driven by a shared belief in progressive governance, discipline and grassroots mobilisation.

Akume also commended Akande’s tenure as Governor of Osun State and his role as the interim National Chairman of the APC, noting that his leadership helped shape Nigeria’s political landscape and strengthened democratic governance.

He added that Akande’s vision, integrity and wisdom continue to inspire leaders across generations, stressing that Nigeria’s democratic journey would be incomplete without recognising his immense contributions to national development.

Ex-Gov Akande declines allowances as UNIBADAN Governing Council chair

In a rare display of selfless service, the newly appointed Pro Chancellor/Chairman Governing Council of the University of Ibadan, Chief Adebisi Akande has declined any remuneration attached to the office.

Chief Akande, who is a former governor of Osun State, says whatever allowances he may be entitled to should be used to assist deserving science undergraduates of the institution.

The pioneer chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in an August 21,2024 memo to the Registrar of UI, Mr. Ganiyu Oke Saliu, said he considered his appointment as a national call to service “for which I do not intend to earn any remuneration.”

He said: However, if the position is entitled to any allowances, for example for attending meetings of the Governing Council and its committee in accordance with the prior approvals of the Federal Government of Nigeria, you will be kind  enough to assist me to apply any payments which may be due to me from such allowances solely for the benefits of some deserving undergraduate students  of this university who are offering science courses, namely in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology only.

I suggest that the Dean of Students Affairs office or any such University Academic officer shall be involved in coordinating the selection of such eligible science students. • Akande’s leadership burden

    Akande’s leadership burden

    By Ademola Adebisi

In the past few days, the Nigerian public domain has been awash with the celebrations of the 85th birthday of a pan-Nigerian progressive, a Yoruba nationalist and an epitome of selfless leadership, Chief Adebisi Akande. In his country home Ila-Orangun, Ila Local Government Area of Osun State; in Ibadan, the capital city of the new and old Oyo State where his political career had blossomed and glowed; and in Abuja where he had in exemplification presided over the affairs of Africa’s largest ruling political party, the All Progressive Congress, he was celebrated the same day by a wide spectrum of his political followers, friends, allies and even the political foes he had attracted to himself over the years.

It was indeed a honour well deserved by a man who has, through loyalty to his leaders, party discipline, transparency and accountability in governance, selflessness, and mastery over mundane desires, emerged very immaculate and firm in the murky and slippery water of Nigerian politics. As an incorruptible and truthful leader, he remains the brand and face of the leader the Nigerian state ought to have in all the facets of its life but which most Nigerians seem not to appreciate.

His commitment to the above adumbrated leadership virtues, personal discipline and mystical conduct in politics and governance has not only drawn fierce criticism from his political foes and the confused and undiscerning masses, but has  also become undeserved burden on this great political hard thinker.

Read Also; Edo guber: I won’t be bullied out of race, says Philip Shaibu

In this first example, during his time in government, he found out that the Nigerian public service has not only often been outsized and indolent, but has also been grossly ineffective and inefficient. For avowedly saying this truth most times, he is vilified and his leadership is feared. What a burden!

Second, in his public life, he has not only spoken against corruption, he has also fought it. Under his leadership in Osun State, kickback on contracts was not tolerated. For this, some of his followers who have fallen out with him have accused him of not empowering them. Akande prefers the good of the public, but they prefer the good of “selves”. Sad still, the ignorant masses are made to believe this. What a dilemma! What another burden!

Third, in his personal life also, Akande has proved that hard work and frugality equal prosperity. He doesn’t waste his financial resources. He saves and invests his dough. He prefers to teach you how to fish rather than giving you fish to wallop. He operates “sleep well account” that has enabled him to give the best of all things in life to his family. He lives a simple life. For this, he is seen as a stingy leader by some of his prodigal fair weather followers. Instead of following in the footsteps of the leader and bringing order into their own personal finances, they in propaganda, vicariously hold him responsible for their profligacy and lack of foresight.

Fourth, in his public life still, Akande believes in fairness. He always wants to act like nature that rains on the farms of foes and friends alike. Hence, he often acts in altruistic manner. Yet, he has not lost sight of the need to lend a helping hand to the development of his country home, in a country where prebendalism is the rule rather than the exception. Today, the history of the development of Ila community has no root without the prominent and fundamental roles Chief Adebisi Akande has played. This has of course earned him the chieftaincy title of Asiwaju of Ila- Orangun. This could not but attract the envy of some of his kinsmen. Thus, in the last couple of years, the agenda to discredit and demolish his political edifice has been on. Violence, vote buying and propaganda have been deployed to achieve this. In 2021, Ila community lost the location of a Federal College of Education to Iwo in Osun State. Then in Ila, some youths launched fierce and virulent physical attack on Akande’s home. Yet at the peak of the crisis, Akande assured his people that something bigger was coming to Ila. Soon after, the then president, Muhammadu Buhari, a friend of Akande, who had publicly declared that, he could go to the trenches with Bisi Akande, approved a Federal University for Ila -Orangun. While it is an open secret that Akande’s influence attracted this public good to the town, yet like the Jews of the old, his detractors continue to chorus :”crucify him”.

    What a burden!

In his political career also, Akande abhors carpet crossers and money bags. They often end up betraying their party and their leaders he has consistently maintained. Contrarily however, the affected political neophytes often misunderstand this and often describe Akande as an old cock that doesn’t want the young ones to crow. Amidst this wrong notion, Akande has mentored the patient ones and has let go those in a hurry.

For a very long time, Akande has stood by Bola Tinubu. This is born out of Akande’s belief that Tinubu would lead Nigeria and should therefore be helped by a pathfinder from homeland in order to succeed. This is exactly the motive of his closeness to Tinubu and why Tinubu has made him his confidant and pathfinder which Dare Babarinsa has captured very well in Yoruba as” Baba Isale”. But for his loyalty and as pathfinder for Tinubu, some of his detractors have unfortunately and wrongly seen him as Bola’s lapdog. But like all Baba Isale in Yoruba political process and governance, Akande is certainly on top.

One good news that has attended the birthday celebrations is the establishment of Adebisi Akande Foundation. While we await the details of the foundation, it is my hope that interrogating the Nigerian leadership and followership question and their ecology will form part of its mission.

  • Ex-governor Akande on ‘vagabonds’ in power

Ex-governor Akande on ‘vagabonds’ in power

Former Osun State governor and first chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bisi Akande, was simply being prescient. In his remarks during his 85th birthday celebration last Tuesday in Ibadan, he warned political office holders of the dangers they will confront in the near future as a new set of rich and ambitious but unprincipled people make a bid for power. It will be a war of uncertain outcomes portending great danger for peace and stability. There were enough powerful politicians in the audience to take heed of his warning, if they can, and it is probably even more appropriate that Vice President Kashim Shettima spoke eloquently on the lecture theme titled The Leadership Question: Prospects for Nigeria. It is, however, not certain that the generally fearful political class drained by tyrannical social media voices will pay enough attention to the uncertain future looming against them.

No one knows exactly what Chief Akande really thinks about the warning he gave, whether he thinks the current political class or their successors have the stomach for a fight or the savvy to even win. But for whatever it is worth, the former APC chairman nevertheless spoke his mind. Referring to the lecture theme, he said: “I am becoming afraid because you are talking about leadership. In my party, it is even more difficult. Our governors are our leaders in our party. But the war has started and when the battle comes, I pray to be alive. I know my body will be feeble; I will not be in the front but I will be behind you. This will be a party of our leaders and new brand of vagabonds. The new brand of vagabonds is ready to fight you and is all out. They have not named the date but they will fight a serious battle with you. Take note so that when the fight comes, you will know that the future leaders are going to fight with the new brand of vagabonds. The language they use is to call you corrupt. They say politicians are corrupt, but this new brand of vagabonds is the most corrupt. They are everywhere in this country and they are gaining more adherents every day.”

Edo 2024: I will get APC’s ticket, win gov election – Ize-Iyamu declares

Chief Akande was not simply warning ‘others’, he was even more insistent on the ruling party, his party, wondering whether its leaders could sense the war shaping up in the horizon. Anyway, he continued, this time with added poignancy: “The new brand of vagabonds are the drug barons, crude oil thieves, (illegal) bunkerers. They are among you; they are richer than you; they are calling you corrupt and hiding behind the cloak that they are not corrupt, but they are more corrupt and they will fight you. So, we are in a Nigeria now where everybody is struggling to be corrupt and the mindset of everybody is corruption, and they don’t point the fingers to themselves; they are pointing it at you, politicians. But that is not the end; they are going to fight. They are in your ward meetings, they are struggling to become ward leaders, they want to become local government leader, state leaders. By the time they become ministers and everything, we are all in trouble. The Armageddon is coming.”

The war may have already begun, however. But perhaps what is obvious now is that the war is nothing more than mere skirmishes that may soon become full-blown in the near future. If the United States could be confronting in Donald Trump hints of its own dystopian politics, nothing suggests that Nigeria with its weak and faltering institutions, could build the moral and institutional ramparts to forestall a catastrophic political future. The dangerous populism fostered by the social media and the cleverness of ambitious but amoral politicians taking advantage of loopholes, may both combine to undermine Nigeria’s political and leadership future. Chief Akande’s warnings need to be taken seriously. But why he thinks he is speaking about the future is not known, for his warnings are alarmingly apposite and apocalyptic for today, perhaps concealing far more than he revealed in his plaintive remarks. Respected for his methods and observations than for his political tactics, he is nevertheless quick and smart enough to suspect many of those who offered themselves for leadership positions in the last polls, men and women who had ‘laundered and legitimised’ their acquisitions, and whose rhetoric fooled countless and undiscriminating millions. If those nefarious politicians could make such huge impacts in the last election cycle, imagine what they are capable of in the coming years. As Chief Akande said, there is trouble ahead.

Chairman of Apapa Iganmu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Alhaja Fumilayo Akande-Mohammed has opened two roads at Osime and Akorede streets.

She listed some of the roads as Makanjuola Oke-Oja, Sari Street, Giwa Street, Sule lane, Kareem Opeloyeru, Amusu, Sari-Iganmu, Amusu, Sango, Arewa, Afolabi, Akorede, and Osime streets, among others.

Alhaja Akande-Mohammed stated that the roads were part of activities to fulfill her promise to the residents during campaign.

“We promised them that we are going to do the road for them, and to God be the glory today, we are able to do the road and it was commissioned by our political father, Prince Tajudeen  Olusi and Ojora of Ijora, Oba Fatai Aromire,” she said.

The council boss said the two roads weren’t the only roads she constructed, saying that she had done at least 17 standard roads with good culverts.

She announced that another round of palliatives would soon be distributed to residents.

According to her, there’s an adage which states: “When you do roads and you don’t do stomach infrastructure, it is equals to doing nothing.”

She urged the residents to make good use of the roads and all other inaugurated projects.

“Don’t cook on the walk way or sell your market there. You should handle government property with care and own it.  These projects are our property, our heritage and it should be protected from being damaged,” she said.

Ojora of Ijora, Oba Fatai Aromire, lauded the efforts of the chairman for a job well done. “Sincerely, she has tried, if she had not perform well, I wouldn’t have attended the inauguration, she has done a wonderful job. I didn’t even expect her to do as much as she did, let’s give kudos to her,” he said.

Oba Aromire enjoined the people to cooperate with the council chairman because she is doing a lot.
