Tinubu always welcome in Ondo, says Akeredolu

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu yesterday said former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is always welcome in his state.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Yemi Olowolabi, faulted reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart was not needed in the state.

The statement reads: “The attention of Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) has been drawn to news reports in some media of February 26 in respect of statements made at the meet the governor’s programme, which was part of the activities to mark the anniversary of his first year in office.

“According to the reports, the governor said the reconciliation committee, led by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has no business in Ondo State and that the state ‘does not need a trouble shooter’.

“Another headline stated: ‘Why Tinubu can’t come to Ondo’, which suggests that Asiwaju Tinubu is not welcome in Ondo State.

“It was also reported that Governor Akeredolu ‘denied Boroffice as senator representing Ondo North’.

“Akeredolu would like to clarify any potential misunderstanding that could arise from these false and misleading reports.

“He wishes to make it clear that the Asiwaju Tinubu-led reconciliation committee is welcome in Ondo State at any time.

“The committee will, however, find that it has no work to do in the state, as there is peace and stability in the Ondo State APC.

“The governor never doubts the ability of Asiwaju Tinubu to successfully carry out this onerous task of uniting our great party and putting it in good stead for the task ahead.

“The governor does not deny the legitimacy of Senator Ajayi Boroffice’s position as the senator representing Ondo North Senatorial District.

“However, the point Governor Akeredolu made was that he knows of only two APC senators in the state who are currently working with the state government for uplifting Ondo State.”

  • Akeredolu getting down to business, one year after

Akeredolu getting down to business, one year after

Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) is marking his one year in office. Correspondent DAMISI OJO examines how the All Progressives Congress (APC) governor, who took over from Dr. Olusegun Mimiko of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on February 24, last year, has fared since his assumption of office.

SHORTLY after Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) was sworn into office, as the helmsman in Ondo State on February 24, last year, he stood before the crowd at the Akure Township Stadium and promised to fulfill his campaign promises, by serving the people creditably.

The governor, who inherited a backlog of seven-month salaries, told the people  that he was prepared to deploy the mineral resources available in the state to lift the people out of poverty, saying it was as a result of mismanagement of public funds by previous administrations.

The former President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) had promised that he would usher in a new dawn, by listening to the voice of the people to provide good governance. He said: “We stand before you to pledge, with the guidance of God and our resolve not to renege on our promises, that your welfare shall form the basis of all our activities.”

Akeredolu said his administration would lead a patriotic, highly-inspired and competent team to rescue the state from poverty. He promised to rebuild the state’s economy, resuscitate damaged infrastructure, restore hope and return Ondo State, which has been nicknamed the Sunshine State, to a prosperous land. He said: “We are determined as an administration to break down the barriers that have made stagnation possible.

“We will break down the barriers to honest leadership, to comprehensive development, to physical growth and social security. These we intend to do through the promotion of transparent leadership, the rule of law, extensive consultation, quality and accessible utilities and social security; all in a sustainable manner. We acknowledge the enormous challenges faced by the state and the severely limited resources available to meet these ever-increasing and compelling demands.”

The governor broke his administration’s plan into a five-point agenda tagged: “JMPPR.” This stands for: job creation through agriculture, entrepreneurship and industrialisation; massive infrastructural development and maintenance; provision of functional education and technological growth; provision of accessible and qualitative healthcare and social service delivery; and rural development and community extension services.

Although the state has been plagued by challenges of the economic recession, like other states, Governor Akeredolu has managed within the last one year to make some positive impact. For instance, observers have scored the governor high in the area of workers’ welfare, infrastructural development and putting the right policy in place to attract investors.

Many of them are of the opinion that the governor deserves some commendation for the little he has been able to achieve, because of the poor state of the nation’s economy when he assumed power, which led to a sharp drop in the monthly allocation from the Federation Accounts. At least, he has not reneged on his promise of promoting workers’ welfare.

Besides the prompt payment of workers’ salaries since he took over power, he has equally settled three months out of the seven months salaries he inherited from the immediate past administration. This was what impressed an analyst, Mr. Julius Alade, who said the governor had improved the frosty and battered relationship between the state government and the labour union.

Alade, who claimed he has been monitoring activities of the government since its inauguration, said the it is focusing on its mandate of deploying public resources for the benefits of the greatest number of the people. He said Governor Akeredolu’s achievement is in the area of economic and social service, such as payment of workers’ salaries and pensions from February 2017 to date, as well as the settlement of August and 80 per cent of September 2016 salaries.

The analyst also said Akeredolu’s achievements include the reinstatement and restoration of all benefits to politically victimised staff of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, and the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, respectively.”

In the area of job creation, Akeredolu had made it clear during his inauguration that he would use agriculture to solve the problem of unemployment, particularly among the teeming youths of the state. In the last one year, some of the jobless youths have embraced his administration’s ‘Youths for Agric Value Chain Empowerment’.

Also, the administration has distributed palm seedlings to farmers across the state in its bid to reactivate the 10,000 hectares afforestation project at Araromi, in Ondo South Senatorial District. The disbursement of N210 million to farmers’ co-operative societies, under the FADAMA scheme and the establishment of various poverty alleviation programmes and the engagement of over 300 youths under ‘FADAMA GUYS’ programme, the Akeredolu-led government has mobilised no fewer than 35,000 farmers for the Federal Government’s Anchor Borrowers Scheme in the state.

Akeredolu has also made some remarkable achievements in the infrastructure development. During the electioneering campaign period, the governor used to describe the state of infrastructure in the state as depressive. He had pledged then to fix the infrastructure to enable farmers and interested investors have access to markets in the towns and cities in the state.

The Nation’s investigations at the state Ministry of Works reveal that the governor has started rehabilitation and total reconstruction of many roads across the three senatorial districts.

A supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muyiwa Gbeminiyi, said the reconstruction of the notorious Oke-Alabojuto Road in Ikare-Akoko and the construction of a new access road from Akure to Idanre are among the most important intervention of the governor in that regard.

Though the Ikare road is yet to be completed, Gbeminiyi hailed Governor Akeredolu for deeming it necessary to mobilise contractors to fix the road, after many years of neglect. He praised the governor for spreading the developmental strides to the three senatorial districts.

Other roads rehabilitated or reconstructed are the access roads within the state Specialist Hospital, Akure; the 1.5km Iwalewa Road, Akure; the 1.2km Abusoro Road, Akure; internal and access roads within the Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH), Okitipupa; the 2.5km Sabomi Road, Ese-Odo, and others.

On security, Akeredolu has tried to live up to expectations that it is government’s responsibility to protect the lives and properties of the people. Shortly after assumption of office, he initiated moves to resolve boundary issues between Atijere and Makun-omi community, to douse rising tension between the two communities. The decision, observer noted, has enhanced interpersonal and peaceful co-existence among residents of the once restive communities.

The governor has also sought and received approval to have more police area commands in addition to the existing three ones, to reinforce security in some parts of the state and thereby forestall kidnapping and armed robbery.

The State Security Council has also directed authorities in several communities to ensure regular clearance of bushes on the verges of roads that link Ondo State with the neighbouring states, to stem the activities of kidnappers and other criminal elements.

Militancy, with its attendant destruction of lives and public properties, was the order of the day in the Ese-Odo Local Government Area before Akeredolu assumed office. But, all that has become history, due to what a security analyst, James Binuyo, termed as the governor’s deep understanding of leadership role and strategies.

Binuyo said: “Governor Akeredolu deserves commendation for bringing to an end the era of militancy, which was responsible for loss of lives and properties in the riverine area.  Since the governor proclaimed amnesty for the militants, the restiveness among the youths in the area has subsided.

“There was a time militants held the riverine communities to ransom. The nation’s water ways and the creek became a no-go area for even the boldest military men. From their fortress in the creeks, the militants launched deadly attacks on petroleum pipelines, which is used to transport the nation’s economic mainstay —- oil.

“Also, there was a time hoodlums robbed banks, carting away several millions in cash. In recent times, kidnapping of family members of wealthy people had become a fad for the criminals. Militants, mainly youths, had resorted to such unlawful means of agitation, because of the perception that their area is underdeveloped, because of neglect by the different levels of government.”

In an attempt to curb the criminality in the riverine area, Akeredolu set up a committee headed by his deputy, Mr. Agboola Ajayi, to disarm the weapon-bearing youths. Ajayi, who incidentally hails from the area, quickly swung into action with members of his committee and they were able to get the militants to sign an agreement to lay down their arms.

Thus, to reciprocate the gesture, the governor on November 9, last year proclaimed amnesty for them, with 21 days to submit their weapons, so as to be listed in the expanded amnesty programme of the Federal Government. Akeredolu, while addressing the militants, said his government was determined to ensure the programme succeeds and administered only to those it was meant for. He said only those who submitted weapons would be listed in the amnesty programme.

Akeredolu’s commitment to good governance is also paying off in the area of sound healthcare delivery. The governor liaised with the World Bank to facilitate $500,000 to enhance primary healthcare across all the 18 local government areas. This move attracted the benevolence of the People’s Republic of China, which donated 40 imaging medical items to the state medical village in Ondo town

The governor has also tried to create a conducive atmosphere for governance, by ensuring that a cordial relationship existed between the executive and the legislature. On assumption of office, he met a factionalised state House of Assembly. The crisis centred on the 2017 budget, which the immediate past administration could not pass before it vacated office.

But, the speed with which Akeredolu rallied members of the House of Assembly to sheathe their swords, in the interest of the state, facilitated the quick passage of the budget.

Also, majority of the House of Assembly members, who were members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) became fascinated with the governor’s leadership style and consequently defected to the APC. In their interactions with reporters, the lawmakers hinged their decision to defect on Akeredolu’s vision for the development of the state

In sports, enthusiasts have lauded Akeredolu for reviving the state’s football team, Sunshine Stars FC, which was on the verge of relegation.

The only challenge confronting the administration is the paucity of funds. But, Akeredolu is poised to confront this challenge with aggressive revenue generation, proper management of resources and financial prudency. Many residents of the state have also urged the governor to encourage job creation for the teeming unemployed youths, ensure regular payment of workers’ salaries and also create a conducive environment for traders, artisans and others to work.

Ondo celebrates Akeredolu’s one year in office, backs Buhari’s second term

The senator, who was a Commissioner for Finance, noted that the Akeredolu administration had impacted positively on the masses.

He said: “I like to appreciate Akeredolu’s government for its people-oriented policies. The governor and his State Executive Council (Exco) members had lived up to expectation. • Akeredolu kick-starts N15b industrial park, others

Akeredolu kick-starts N15b industrial park, others

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) yesterday restated his administration’s the unwavering commitment to the rapid transformation of the state from an agrarian to an industrialised one.

Akeredolu, who promised to leave the state better than he met it about one year ago, kick-started three multi-billion projects in the Southern Senatorial District area of the state.

The flagging off of the projects, which was part of activities to mark Akeredolu one year in office, included the N15billion International Industrial Park in Omotosho, Ore in Odigbo Local Government Area, the construction of fly-over across Benin-Lagos express road at Ore, and the construction of an 18.1-kilometre Bye Pass road from Okitipupa to Igbokoda.

At the Industrial Park flag-off, the governor said the quest to industrialise the state has gathered greater momentum through the creation of the state Development and Investment Promotion Agency (ONDIPA) to midwife the establishment of new industries and reactivate the moribund and comatose ones under Public Private Partnership arrangement.

According to Akeredolu, his administration is able to achieve the feat following the signing of Memorandum of Understanding with HESSMAC Nigeria Limited for the Development, operation and management of the park.

The governor said the industrial park, which covers a land area of 1000 hectares, will generate 15,000 direct jobs and other auxiliary services from 400 industries that will spring up in the park.

He said: “An industrial park of this magnitude is typically accompanied by a number of technical and infrastructural facilities such hotels and Guest Houses, textiles and Apparels, Telecommunications, Furniture, Garment, Building Materials, Plastic Products, Gas Pipeline and Distribution among others”

This project is expected to be completed within the next 24 months.

At the flag-off of the construction of the Ore Benin-Lagos fly-over, Akeredolu described the project as monumental and impactful.

He said: “As a government that is irrevocably committed to the welfare of its people in tandem with the positive change mantra of our great party, we are determined to take this bold step in view of its numerous inherent advantages. We remain undeterred by the huge cost of this gigantic project and we promise that we shall complete and commission it in no distant time.

“One of the reasons why we decided to embark on this project is to put an end to the constant carnage experienced on this road intersection which often led to loss of lives and materials. Aside from putting an end to preventable accidents, the aesthetic value of the city will also be enhanced.”

It will be recalled that Akeredolu, who kicked off his 2016 governorship election campaign at Ore, had promised the people that he would construct a fly-over for them if they cast their votes for his party, the All Progressives Congress.

At another event where the governor flagged-off 18.1kilometres bye-pass road from Okitipupa to Igbokoda, Akeredolu said if the project is completed, it would eliminate the time wasted by commuters going to Igbokoda and beyond who have  hitherto been made to take the long and arduous journey through Okitipupa city centre.

The governor assured the people that his administration would add everything needed to achieve this lofty objective. He also promised that he would not rest on his oars until all communities have been transformed.

He sought the cooperation and support of the people for his administration in order to ensure greater dividends of democracy.

At the State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, where Akeredolu commissioned internal roads, he condemned his predecessor for abandoning the institution for eight years of his administration.

Akeredolu, who said education is the hub around which all developments in any nation revolve, promised that he would not waver in his commitment towards making education in the state 21th century compliant.

The governor disclosed that as part of his efforts to improve the welfare and living condition of the students by providing conducive learning environment and modem accommodation for them, he has promptly effected the outstanding payment due to the contractor handling the construction of the students` hostel building to facilitate completion without further delay.

The governor also visited the ongoing roads construction at Ayeka-Irele road and Sabomi/Ajapa road in Ese-Odo local government.

The event was graced by the the All Progressives Congress (APC) South West Chairman, Chief Pius Akinyelure.

SSG: Akeredolu’s govt will uplift Ondo

The Secretary to the Ondo State Government (SSG), Ifedayo Abegunde, yesterday assured the residents that the Oluwarotimi Akeredolu administration will bring development to all parts of the state.

Abegunde, who addressed reporters “as the present government marked its one year in office”, said the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration in the state had signed seven Memoranda of Understanding (MoU).

The SSG said the state government had also signed five agreements for massive industrialisation of the state.

He said multi-billion naira projects by national and international investors would checkmate massive youth unemployment and lead to huge economic prosperity.

The former member of the House of Representatives listed the MoU with Greenfield Asset Limited for the establishment and management of commercial poultry farm and powdered egg farm project valued at N42 billion, located at Emure-Ile in Owo Local Government Area.

According to him, the project will be kick-started on Thursday with the state having 10 per cent equity and one director in it.

Abegunde added that 18,000 youths were being trained in agriculture value chain across the state.

The SSG said the youths would be trained by the Federal College of Agriculture in Akure (FECA).

He also highlighted other areas the government had recorded major achievements.

These include agriculture, security, health, education, transportation, sports, labour, workers’ welfare, infrastructure development, community and social development projects across the three senatorial districts.

Various other prospects, Abegunde said, are contained in the “Blueprint to Progress (2017-2021)” as put together by the Strategic Development and Policy Implementation Committee (SDPIC) and the 2018 Budget, which is first of its kind in the state.

He added: “2018 Appropriation Law of N181.424 billion has 46 per cent of the fiscal projection set aside as capital expenditure; thus making it the Ondo State budget with the highest percentage for capital projects since the creation of the state 42 years ago.”

The SSG sought the support of the citizenry for the Akeredolu administration and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to enable the governor deliver dividends of democracy to every doorstep.

He said Akeredolu’s government is people-oriented with commitment to uplift Ondo State by harnessing available resources and potentials for development.

  • Bail us out of hardship, pensioners beg Akeredolu

Pensioners in Ondo State, particularly those of local government areas, yesterday decried the alleged non-payment of their five-month pension allowance and gratuity from 2011 till date.

At an annual get-together for retired primary school teachers in Akure South Local Government Area in Akure, the state capital, the local government’s chairman of Retired Primary School Teachers Mr E. K. Aribigbola said arrears of 15 per cent increase paid to state pensioners in 2012 had not been paid to them.

He expressed displeasure that despite efforts by the state’s NUP, the government had not regularly paid members’ entitlement.

Aribigbola said NUP members, through the union executive, were enjoying free monthly blood and weight check with physical education.

The secretary, Teniola Olu, pleaded for government attention on the welfare of local government pensioners.

He said many pensioners had died without getting their gratuities, after 35 years of stewardship.

The state’s NUP chairman, Chief R. A. Adetuwo, also expressed concern about the plight of the pensioners.

He sought an opportunity to meet Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to enable pensioners dialogue with him on their predicament and the way out.

The chairman lauded the improvement in the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and retreat with government functionaries, but regretted that many workers were not faithful to revenue generation for the government.

On behalf of the government, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Union Matters, Alaba Isijola, noted that restructuring of the country was the only recipe to end poor allocations to states and local governments.

According to him, it is not deliberate for the Oluwarotimi Akeredolu administration not to pay pensioners’ allowances.

He blamed the delay on dwindling allocation from the Federal Government.

Isijola said: “The situation here is circumstantial. Until we restructure the country and there is an increment in state and local government allocations, the problem will persist.

“Let us continue to pray that the country is restructured from its present situation.
