Akeredolu presents N215m cheque, tools to Fadama farmers

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) yesterday presented a cheque of N215 million and farm input to farmers under the Fadama III Additional Financing Project.

He said farmers would soon begin to enjoy bountiful harvests with better yields and prices for their produce.

The governor said his administration would encourage more people, especially youths, to embrace agriculture as an alternative and reliable source of wealth creation.

Akeredolu urged the beneficiaries, who are expected to spend the money on the cultivation of about 2,000 hectares of land to produce rice and cassava, to use it appropriately.

The governor said the determination to create jobs through agriculture, entrepreneur and industrialisation propelled his administration, from inception, to give priority to agriculture.

He said: “We are convinced that there can be no real development in our clime if this important sector in neglected.

“It is equally our opinion, anchored on empirical evidence that agriculture, practised with a philosophy of self-reliance, plays a pivotal role in the absorption of a considerable chunk of the vast army of unemployed youths who are willing to participate in this realistic project.

“In pursuance of this onerous task, we have, at different fora and events within and outside the state, met, courted and fraternised with various development partners, donor agencies, financial institutions, representatives of foreign governments, among others, in our untiring and unyielding quest to solicit robust relationships, which will translate to real development in socio-economic terms.”

  • State creation hampered South West development – Governors

State creation hampered South West development – Governors

Southwest governors on Monday lamented the splitting of the old Western Nigeria into six states by the Federal Government, saying the action not only robbed the people of their oneness, but also hampered the region’s socio – economic development.

The governors – Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), Senator Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Ayo Fayose Ekiti) and Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), spoke during the Southwest Governors’ Quarterly meeting held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Amosun, the host Governor in his welcome speech, said instead of building bridges, state creation led to boundary disputes and security challenges among them.

The governor recalled that many landmark achievements were recorded in Yoruba land during the time of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as Premier of the Western Region.

He advised that the time has come for them to unite, promote and re – enact the achievements of the South-West in the Nigerian Federation.

Amosun said: “As a region, it is important that we promote the pre-eminence and achievements of the South-West in the Nigerian Federation. This in reference and in particular to the greatness we have achieved as a people when we were together as a regional government in Nigeria.

“We will recall those laudable feats made us the envy of other regions. Time and space will, definitely, not permit me to begin to list the giant leaps that the South-West took as a region between 1957 and 1967 particularly under the leadership of the late sage, Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo.

“Permit me to list a few. We have physical infrastructure such as the Cocoa House at Ibadan, which was aptly named after the source of its funding; the Agodi Secretariat at Ibadan; and the different roads that connect our towns and cities some of which are still standing the test of time. We also have the educational infrastructure of which we are still benefitting from today.

” Indeed, many of us seated in this room are beneficiaries of the Free Education Programme of that time. It is the same Free Education Programme that culminated in the establishment of a University that was once the most beautiful campus in Sub-Sahara Africa, the then University of Ife, and now appropriately named the Obafemi Awolowo University, at Ile-Ife.

“We cannot also forget the economic infrastructure; we have the O’odua Group as the umbrella Investment House for the commercial enterprise of the region such as the Sketch Publication; the Wemabod Estates; the Lafia Hotels; the Premier Hotel at Ibadan; the Area J4 Forest Reserve and others.

“However, the creation of states from the old Western Region in 1976 which should have been an impetus for further socio-economic development had been allowed to create artificial boundaries between our people.

“And to further worsen the situation, some of our people are also making themselves available as instruments of division because of their selfish political gains. The consequence is that our people begin to see themselves as a people of one state or the other rather than as a sub-unit of the entity of the Yoruba people.

“This is not without its attendant challenges of intra and inter-state boundary disputes which have worsened security in some states and, hampered socio-economic development. Instead of building bridges, some of our people are digging trenches for protection against their own brothers and sisters.

“My dear brothers, the onerous task on our hands is to lead our people to further prosperous living. That is why the chosen agenda for this meeting ‘Economic Self-Determination for South-West Nigeria’ with special focus on ‘South-Western Nigeria Export Initiative’ is very apt.

“Instead of the bowl-in–hand practice that each of the states seeks from the Federal Allocation, the time has come for us to map out strategies to harness the natural resources of the entire region for further socio-economic development of the South-West Region as a whole and for more prosperity for our people.

For Aregbesola, the old Western Nigeria recorded greater feats when it operated as single state.

“If we look critically at the achievements we had as singular state of Western Region. We must be mindful of the fact that as singular state then, we achieved more than now when we are divided into six states.

“We must identify our strength, unify those strength and explore them for the benefit of our people. We use the development to galvanise our potentials,” Aregbesola said.

    Akeredolu appoints acting CJ

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) has approved the appointment of Justice O. O. Akeredolu as the new acting Chief Judge (CJ).

Justice Akeredolu’s appointment followed a court ruling that terminated the tenure of former acting CJ, Justice Temitayo Osoba.

Justice Osoba’s appointment faced series of controversies, including petitions by two lawyers to the National Judicial Council (NJC) for his alleged age falsification.

Also, the governor, the NJC and Justice Osoba were sued over Osoba’s appointment as the acting CJ.

At the weekend, Governor Akeredolu approved the appointment of Justice Akeredolu as the new acting CJ to take over from Justice Osoba, who had been in acting capacity since last year.

A statement by the Information Officer in the Ministry of Justice, Mr Kola Adeyanju, said the new acting CJ will be sworn in tomorrow at the Cocoa Conference Hall of the Governor’s Office in Akure, the state capital.

  • Ondo APC, Alasoadura greet Akeredolu at 61

The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the lawmaker representing Ondo Central Senatorial District, Tayo Alasoadura, have felicitated with Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) on his 61st birthday.

A statement by the party’s Director of Media, Steve Otaloro, described the governor as peace-loving with devotion to the development of the state and the nation.

The statement said: “As a technocrat in politics, you have been steadfast in defending the struggle to redeem our state’s economy, which has been battered and bruised overtime.

“This has paved the way for the socio-economic and political development of the Sunshine State on which you have reposed so much responsibility towards empowering the people economically through regular payment of workers’ salaries and various Economic Empowerment Programmes for the people.

“We continue to value your courage in the current efforts at making sure that Ondo State becomes one of the developed states in Nigeria, and continue to have global recognition through its resources, such as Agriculture, Tourism and others.”

Ondo governorship: Akeredolu loses at Appeal Court

•It’s democracy at work, says Abraham

The Appeal Court, sitting in Abuja, yesterday dismissed an application for a stay of proceedings filed by Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) against his election.

A governorship aspirant in the last election, Olusegun Abraham, is challenging the choice of Akeredolu as the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the November 26, last year, poll.

Abraham said the party’s primary, which upheld the selection of Akeredolu, was fraught with irregularities.

The APC chieftain said APC’s investigative committee recommended a repeat of the primary.

Shortly after the primary, Abraham sought an interim injunction restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising Akeredolu as the party’s governorship candidate in the November 26 poll, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed on the matter.

In October, last year, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, held that Abraham’s application for an interim injunction had merit.

The court ordered Akeredolu to appear before it on October 28, last, but the governor appealed the ruling and filed a stay of proceedings.

The appellate court ruled that the appeal and the application for a stay of proceedings lacked merit.

The court also ordered the governor to put up a defence as one of the respondents in the suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Abraham hailed the ruling, saying it was democracy in action.

A statement yesterday in Akure, the state capital, by the Director-General of Abraham Support Group (ASG), Kunle Eko-Davies, said: “The events leading to the 2015 Ondo State APC primary are still fresh in our memories. The unilateral act of our party’s National Chairman to submit the name of Akeredolu as the candidate of the party, contrary to the decision of the party’s Appeal Committee and National Working Committee (NWC), is also fresh in our memories.

“This is a quit notice to Governor Akeredolu and his members to vacate the Government House, which was acquired illegally.”

It urged members of the ruling party and supporters to remain calm and prayerful.

The statement added that the dispute would be handled as a family matter and resolved by the courts.

Akeredolu: no rift in Ondo APC

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) is intact in the state.

Akeredolu, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Segun Ajiboye, said: “The governor remains unshaken in his commitment to deliver on his promise to continue to drive the wheel of progress of the state irrespective of their  irresponsible and devious acts to cause discord and disaffection among the peace-loving people of Ondo State.

“It is, however necessary to state here that till date, all the appointments made by Governor Akeredolu have been of people who are card-carrying members of the APC, except for the few professional personal aides.

“It should also be noted that Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is committed to pursuing the five cardinal programmes of his administration, which are designed to bring development to Ondo State and to deliver the dividends of democracy to the good people of the state, irrespective of political or religious divide.”
