‘Akeredolu is committed to workers’ welfare’

Babatunde Osho is a civil servant in Ondo State. For  eight months, he had not received his salaries. That was during the tenure of the immediate past administration. Things were really very tough and rough for Ondo State’s civil servants. But that seems to be consigned in the trash can of history.

Quite recently, the unusual happened. The father of four received an unusual message on his phone; which turned out to be a credit alert.

At first, he was not sure what type of alert it was. But when he looked closely again, he realised that it was yet another credit alert for his salary for the month of March, less than one month when he received that of February.

As if that was not enough, he received credit alert for that month’s salary and a week after, there was another credit alert for August, last year’s outstanding salary arrear owed by the past administration.

As a civil servant in the employ of the Ondo State government, it was the first time Osho would get his salary for two straight months since eight months because of the failure of the immediate past administration to pay the workers.

Like other civil servants in the state, his life took a turn for the worse as days turned into weeks and weeks into months without any hope of getting his salaries.

His children changed schools because he could not afford their fees, while the entire family survived on the meagre earnings from the wife’s petty trading.

For months, Osho, the usually boisterous fellow, had become a shadow of himself. Aside from his inability to take care of his family, the father of four was also battling with some serious health challenges.

The credit alerts received by the workers, which notified them of the payment of their salaries marked the beginning of a new dawn for civil servants in the Sunshine State.

“For seven months, we were not paid our salaries. Most of the civil servants had lost hope of ever getting paid. But, with the fulfilment of the promise that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) made to us, by paying the salary for the month of February and the vow that he would not owe workers, I am sure that the hopes of civil servants have been rekindled once again,” Osho said.

Eniola Ajewole is another worker whose joy knew no bounds when he received the credit alert for his salary.

It would seem that the alert he received lifted a heavy load off his shoulders. With the February and March salaries paid, he was able to pay his two children’s tuition and meet other domestic needs without stress–a feat he could not achieve for months under the immediate past administration.

“I couldn’t believe it when I received the credit alert. But my cynicism began to wane when my neighbour, who is also a civil servant, confirmed to me that he had also received credit alert,” Ajewole said.

The narratives of the duo and many other workers in the state have dispelled fears of sceptics about the readiness of Governor Akeredolu to develop the state with priority placed on welfare of the workforce.

The payment of the workers’ salaries, beginning from February, has confirmed that Akeredolu is ever ready to keep his promise.

The effect of Akeredolu’s message of hope during his swearing-in on February 24 to make life easy for the people has therefore started reverberating cross the state.

The governor, who had set a clear agenda for himself on how to place Ondo State on the map of economic and industrial development, appears set to work with the available resources to move the state forward.

Akeredolu’s inaugural speech entitled “Journey to Redemption,” had clearly shown the path the governor is now towing.

Before the people of Ondo State and dignitaries that attended his inaugu ration at the popular Akure Township Stadium, Akeredolu had said: “I come to you this day, with a message of hope, a clear agenda of prosperity and vision of life abundant.

“I believe the greatest expression of faith in our ability is to be strong enough to look upon imperfections and decide that it is in our power to remake our society to align with our highest ideals.

“We can rise out of this dust and build a new Ondo State where honesty, prosperity and confidence can, once again, be our self-identity. We can pull ourselves by the bootstraps and shake off our current frustrations and disappointments.

“We must recognise the need for a cohesive platform, indispensable to an effective and efficient implementation of policies and programmes of both government and party, respectively.”

With the latest development, it is certain that the governor will take the Sunshine State to a greater height.

This development is an indication that all the businesses that have gone moribund for years due to poor management of the state’s resources by previous administrations would soon get back on track.

This is because the governor has assured the workers of his determination to pay the backlog of salary arrears he inherited.

The ripple effects of the governor’s attempt to meet this important people’s need (payment of the backlog of workers’ salary arrears) will, no doubt, contribute to peaceful co-existence among residents.

Without doubt, the road to achieving this lofty objective demands co-operation of all, including the civil servants and those in the informal sector such as traders and artisans.

Adeleke’s death disheartening, say Ajimobi, Amosun, Akeredolu

GOVERNORS Abiola Ajimobi(Oyo), Ibikunle Amosun (Osun) and Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (Ondo) have described the death of the first civilian Osun State Governor and serving senator, Isiaka Adeleke, as shocking, disheartening and sad.

Ajimobi, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Mr. Yomi Layinka, in lbadan yesterday, said he received the news of Adeleke’s sudden death with shock and disbelief.

The governor described the late senator as a celebrated and committed politician, distinguished senator, grassroots mobiliser, socialite and great philanthropist.

Ajimobi said: “When the news filtered in that Senator Adeleke was dead, l was extremely shocked and amazed. I found it very difficult to believe, because he was bubbling with life when l saw him last.

“Senator Adeleke was one person l admired for being a fine politician, who committed his life to the service of humanity and his native Ede land.

“Right from his days as the first elected governor of Osun State up till his death, he never wavered in stretching his helping hands to the poor and the needy.

“His role in the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State from when he decided to team up with the progressives and till death is noteworthy. Senator Adeleke was an asset to our party. He will be greatly missed.”

Ajimobi also hailed the late senator’s contributions to debates on the floor of the Senate, which, he said, contributed immensely to quality legislation by the National Assembly.

He added: “His sudden death is even more regrettable because the people of Osun State, members of the APC nationwide and indeed all Nigerians will henceforth miss his gregarious personality, his zeal for development as well as his great mobilisation skills.”

Ajimobi prayed that the Almighty Allah should grant the soul of the late senator Aljanah Firdaus and for God to grant the bereaved family, the late senator’s friends and people in Ede the fortitude to bear the loss.

Amosun, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Adejuwon Soyinka, described Adeleke’s death as “a shock.”

The governor stated that the death was “a great loss not just to Osun State but to the entire nation”.

The governor noted that the two-time senator and first elected governor of Osun State was “an experienced politician and administrator, who will be sorely missed by his immediate family and his political family and the nation at large.”

He said the late Adeleke would be remembered for, among other things, his love for education.

Amosun said this was exemplified by the senator’s decision, as governor, to establish a Polytechnic at Iree, a College of Technology at Esa Oke as well as award of scholarship to indigent students.

He commiserated with the government and people of Osun State on the sudden death of Adeleke, praying that God grants his family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Akeredolu described the senator’s death, as sad and a great loss to his family, the Yoruba race Nigeria.

Consoling the family of the late popular politician, Akeredolu said Adeleke’s deep reservoir of knowledge about the country’s politics would be missed by all.

The governor described the former governor as a consummate gentleman, whose brand of politics endeared him to many.

Akeredolu said: “Late Senator Isiaka Adeleke was a perfect gentleman, who will be missed all.

“He was a peacemaker, who believed in the principle of justice and fair play. I pray that God almighty will grant the family and indeed our great country the fortitude to bear this great loss. “

  • Akeredolu, others extol ex-Ondo Speaker, Olabimtan at 60

Encomiums poured in from far and near yesterday for former Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Adekanye Olabimtan, as he marked his 60th birthday with orphans and the less-privileged at the Correctional Home, along Ondo Road, Akure, the state capital.

In his goodwill message, Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), described Olabimatan as a patriotic Nigerian and lover of the commoners whose life deserves to be emulated by the younger generation.

“On behalf of the Akeredolu’s clan, I say expressly that we are lucky to have someone as nice, honest, sincere and reliable as Victor. He deserves all of the happiness in the world times two. I wish him more wisdom, knowledge and understanding and the grace to live in good health till the end,” Akeredolu said.

An elated Olabimtan said he preferred a low-key celebration to a big bash arranged by friends and associates just to be amongst the teeming masses.

The community leader, who served as the Director General of the Akeredolu Campaign Platform in the November 26th 2016 governorship election in Ondo State, recalled that he would have lived a wasted life if not for the uncommon mercy, grace and favour he got from God that made him triumph against all odds.

The celebrator was accompanied to the less-privileged home by Akeredolu, Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi, Secretary to the Government of Ondo State, Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde and Deputy Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in the state, Engr. Ade Adetimehin.

Also on the entourage was Olabimtan’s wife, Deaconess Aina, his children, siblings, government functionaries, political associates and numerous well-wishers.

The Deputy Governor, Hon. Agboola Ajayi, who donated cash gift, food and drinks to the orphanage home alongside Olabimtan described the celebrator as his leader, mentor and dependable ally who doesn’t tell lie nor betray his benefactors.

  • APC hails Akeredolu for keeping promises

APC hails Akeredolu for keeping promises

The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), at the weekend, hailed Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) for fulfilling his campaign promises, particularly on workers’ welfare.

In a statement by its Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, the party noted that Ondo workers, after getting their March salaries on time, also got the August 2016 remuneration to celebrate the Easter festivities.

Immediately Akeredolu assumed office, he set up a panel to examine the seven months’ salary backlog owed the workers by the last administration of Dr Olusegun Mimiko.

The panel, which comprised top civil servants and headed by the deputy governor, perused the cause of the development and the possibility paying the backlog.

Assuring the workforce of his dedication to their welfare, the governor said he and his appointees would not take their salaries until the state workers got theirs.

APC noted that within two months, the governor had paid the workers up-to-date and added one-month arrears the previous administration owed them.

The statement said: “We in the APC are very happy for the governor, a man of integrity, for making his word his bond and especially for righting the wrongs done to workers in the state.

“It is on the record that the last Christmas celebration was traumatic for civil servants in the state as they were not paid their salaries by the immediate past administration. They were unable to feed their families too. But now, God had used Akeredolu to put smiles on workers’ faces this Easter.”

“I want to use the opportunity of the Easter season to urge every Christian, and indeed, every indigene of our state to continue to live in peace and to love one another as exemplified by our Lord, Jesus Christ, who laid his life for the redemption of our sins,” Governor Akeredolu said.

  • ‘Ondo will thrive under Akeredolu’

    ‘Ondo will thrive under Akeredolu’

Olaoluwa Adeyeye is an international trade and investment lawyer who recently contested the governorship elections in Ondo State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In this interview with Ibrahim Apekhade Yusuf, he speaks on the prospects of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s government in Ondo State, among other sundry issues. Excerpts:

You sought your party’s nomination in the 2016 governorship elections in Ondo State which Rotimi Akeredolu won. Does APC victory in that election inspire you?

One thing was very clear at that time, Ondo State needed to be salvaged from a downturn into poverty, starvation, mediocrity and the economic stagnancy militating against the state. The Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the state had stayed on the same level for a very long time and even at a time it dropped. The infrastructure of the state appeared abandoned to rot. No pipe borne water; no power supply in the entire southern senatorial district for many years. The four local government areas in the Akoko region became most horrible with little or no economic activity in play. So from all indications, it was very clear that there was need to take the state in another direction. I was clear in my mind that the APC candidate was going to win the last election regardless of whether it was my humble self or indeed anyone of the other eminently qualified aspirants. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have been able to put my hand up and indicate interest in that office and that desire was borne out of a faith we had and we still have in the future of Ondo State to be a trendsetting state in this country.

What is your assessment of Governor Akeredolu’s performance thus far?

Coming into office for the first time is different from an incumbent who would have had a hang of things. Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu has come into office for the very first time as the governor of Ondo State. We need to give him the benefit of time to fully appreciate, assimilate what he has met on ground and set the pace for his tenure. He has already begun to demonstrate the tone of his term with a few remarkable strides he has taken in this short period. For example, he’s trying to catch up with the salary arrears that the past administration left unpaid. He has also mapped out plans on how the state is going to move forward economically. He has commenced long outstanding road projects that are so crucial for the state in keeping with his five cardinal programmes promised, which include massive infrastructure deployment. Governor Akeredolu recently entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to construct a road that will connect Ondo State directly with Lagos State thereby enhancing much needed access to market for farmers as well as other added benefits. We are moving forward and I believe that Governor Akeredolu is going to do very well for Ondo State.

Do you see Akeredolu performing better than his predecessor?

I can say categorically that my expectation from Governor Rotimi Akeredolu is much higher than that of the former governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko. Governor Akeredolu is not just a legal practitioner; he is a legal practitioner par excellence. He is someone who has practiced our profession at the very highest level. He comes to Ondo State with a reputation and a record that is intimidating both in practicing and administering the profession as a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). He is a man that we know to be courageous, that will take the right stand even if everybody is going the other way. Our expectation of Akeredolu is very high and I’m certain he will not disappoint the good people of Ondo State.

As an international trade and investment lawyer, how do you think you can contribute to the development of Ondo State, using your wealth of experience and connections?

My specialty in the practice of law has given me the opportunity to see firsthand how capital can be harnessed to stimulate development in the form of projects. One thing is quite clear now; we cannot leave the development of our nation and in this case Ondo State to the government alone to do. I’m already a mobile billboard for the amazing strategic opportunities that are possible in Ondo State and whenever I see willing players, I will be more than willing to steer them towards my dear state.

Is it true that you collected money to step aside for Senator Ajayi Boroffice a week to the primaries?

Let me state for the records as I have on a few occasions addressed this issue recently; I don’t make light of my statements nor do I delight in misrepresentations. I Michael Olaoluwa Adeyeye did not receive a dime to step down from the governorship race. I did not receive any money from/on behalf of the Boroffice Campaign Organisation. It was a decision I made and I followed through on my own. But you know people will always talk but that doesn’t bother me. I would rather focus on achieving set goals. While some disgruntled members of the APC moved over to the AD after the primaries, I stood firmly in the APC because there is no need to go right, left and centre when you have not finished the programme you are working with. So, we are still in the APC, we’ve always been in the APC and we are glad that our party won the election.

Should the people of Akure be watching out for you in 2019?

2019 is very close and yet it is very much far away. At the moment we are focused on some of the community impact initiatives that we want to drive forward.  Those projects are much more important than elections and political projections. We are in politics to impact the lives of the people firstly. Very soon, we will let you know our decision about 2019 if any. Presently, we have a number of projects in the pipeline; a community library coming up and we are trying to find a site for sport facilities and a health center somewhere inside of our two local governments between Akure North and Akure South.

Tell us more about Olaoluwa Adeyeye Foundation?

Olaloluwa Adeoye Foundation is a vehicle I convened and is supported by my family and my friends as a platform via which we will give back to society, especially the people at the lower wrung of the ladder.  Some of the people who support the foundation are old friends that I grew up with in Ondo State and some others are not even from Ondo State but they have come to identify with the passion I have for the state and its people.

  • Akeredolu pledges fair distribution of resources

Akeredolu pledges fair distribution of resources

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) yesterday reiterated his administration’s commitment to fair distribution of resources across the state.
He said no community, especially those in oil producing areas, would be left undeveloped.
The governor spoke at the inauguration of the board of the State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) at the Dome in Akure, the state capital.
Akeredolu said his administration was committed to unearthing the state’s treasures, which were hidden in the state’s southern senatorial district to transform the people’s lives.
The governor noted that because of its relevance, OSOPADEC would not renege on its exclusive mandate to judiciously manage the 40 per cent of the 13 per cent oil derivation for infrastructural development of the oil producing areas.
He urged the board, chaired by a former member of the House of Assembly, Gbenga Edema, to focus on the implementation of its mandate.
Akeredolu said: “The chairman and members of the board being inaugurated today should know that they have a lot do to ensure rapid social, economic and infrastructural development in the area and to bring governance closer to the people.
“You must realise that you require justice and equity, especially in ensuring fair and equitable distribution of developmental projects in all the mandate areas.”
The governor also asked the board to always liaise with the people and educate them on the functions, policies and activities of the commission and the state government.
He said: “You have the mandate of the government to liaise with other bodies, local and international on effective methods of tackling the problems of coastal erosion, oil pollution, spillages and other environmental degradation affecting our people.”
Akeredolu warned against the destruction of government property by restless youths in the guise of protests.
Some Ugbo youths had protested to the Governor’s Office in Akure against the choice of Edema as the OSOPADEC chairman.
They argued that he was not from a core oil producing community in Ilaje Local Government Area.
