Oluwo, 37 monarchs endorse Ogunbiyi for Osun governorship

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has led 37 traditional rulers in Iwo Federal Constituency to endorse the aspiration of Chairman, Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc, Akin Ogunbiyi for 2026 governorship race.

Ogunbiyi is an aspirant within the All Progressives Congress(APC).

At the palace of Oluwo on Tuesday, the monarchs prayed for his emergence as Osun Governor in 2026.

Oba Akanbi, addressing Ogunbiyi with his supporters, lamented that Iwo land made up of three councils have been marginalised since the creation of the State, lamenting that they have never produced Governor, Deputy, Minister, Ambassador and others before.

“I am joining other 37 monarchs of this federal constituency to back the aspiration of our own, Akin Ogunbiyi. He has demonstrated capacity, that is why we decided to present just one person from this constituency for the guber seat.

“We pray that his ambition will come into fruition, good things will happen in Iwo land, he will emerge victorious like Aregbesola, Oyetola and Adeleke as the governor in 2026. We are all going to help him woo other monarchs from other places to support him,” he said.

Ogunbiyi said: “it is only in our Federal constituency that we present only one aspirant. Other places have three to four aspirant but here, we speak with one voice.

“I have come to here for the prayer of my fathers. Oluwo has the voice, relevance and influence to get anything he so wishes. Anything he laid his hands upon always prosper. I want his blessings  alongside other kings. I also want them to help me work towards it.

“Iwo is number three in population, I put my agenda in your hands for us to record success. I want to contest for guber seat, it is the turn of Iwo, you can all help me to consult for us to push Iwo agenda forward.

“If we miss this opportunity, it may take us 24 years before this opportunity come to us in Iwo, which will be detrimental.”

  • OSUN 2026: Will Ogunbiyi be third time lucky?

OSUN 2026: Will Ogunbiyi be third time lucky?

Insurance guru, Dr Akin Ogunbiyi, is again in the Osun State governorship race. He will be fighting for the APC ticket during its primary in a few months’ time. Ibrahim Adam reports.

HE has done it twice, and on both occasions, Dr Akin Ogunbiyi was not elected governor of Osun State. He is undeterred. He believes that it is just a matter of time before he becomes the helmsman of the State of Living Spring. Ogunbiyi’s faith springs from his passion and love for the state which vast potential and mineral resources, he says, are not being properly tapped.

So, Ogunbiyi wants to try his luck again. He has started preparing for the 2026 Osun State governorship election. But first, he knows he has to clear the primary hurdles of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). To the insurance magnate, winning the shadow election is like crossing the rubicon. “Once we get the ticket, we are as good as winning the election”, Ogunbiyi says. “We”? Why, the pronoun, we? He says he sees himself as a team player. “Working in a collective has always been my thing”, Ogunbiyi added.

“Becoming a governor will not remove anything from who l am. I will remain myself. The only difference will be the title of governor, which is a temporary office. People who are around me and work with me will always be there. They are the we, the team, with which I  have been doing great things. I am the team leader, and as governor, I shall remain the team leader. And together, we shall take Osun to greater heights”, he said.

As a man who has attained great heights through hard work, Ogunbiyi sees the potential in Osun and he is pained that the state is where it is today.

“Osun should have grown beyond being a civil service state. It should by now have become an enterprising state. A state where investors rush to, to put their money. We have everything we need for a state to grow and develop. I cannot stay and watch the way things are going because it is our state, my state. I have to do something for Osun to take its pride of place among the states. It can no longer be run as a state for civil servants, teachers and peasant farmers. Osun is much more than that”, Ogunbiyi said.

He went on: “Imagine, Osun was created 34 years ago. It is still a civil service state despite the existence of enormous resources to grow the state. The bulk of the agricultural and other resources used to develop the defunct western region by Awo came from Osun and these resources are still there. All Osun needs is an entrepreneurial governor that can change the dynamics and turn things around”. Ogunbiyi describes himself as the dynamic leader the state needs to become enterprising, forward looking and progressive.

“My ingenuity is in solving problems, no matter how difficult, through smart and inventive methods. A glorious career, grand transformation achievements and renaissance are only made possible through quality education. Education guarantees value-adding freedom that leads to other freedoms. Education lights the fire and flame of adaptive leadership. It is the lifeblood of breakthroughs, momentum, purpose, energy, creativity and innovation.

“I will unlock the human capacity of Osun citizens and revive hope for development and growth. I will light the fire of industrialisation, mechanised farming, and mining. We will transparently showcase clear and specific milestones as clear evidence of our never-relenting hard work and dedicated efforts”, Ogunbiyi said.

He refers to the masterplan of the Osun Development Association (ODA) for the state, explaining that successive administrations did not make use of it. The vision for the state’s growth is outlined in the ODA masterplan. “This is unfortunate. I have actively served in our beloved Osun Development Association for over 25 years and I fully understand the dynamics of its vision for development.  With its masterplan, I will make Osun work and an investors’ hub. We will get the job done with a competent team, remarkable efficiency, great ideas, collaboration and strategic partnership, with zero display of empty noise, luxury and value-destroying opulence”.

Ogunbiyi says he will resuscitate and revive the hope of Osunlites to be number one in the country. According to him, key performance indicator (KPI) is a major performance metric, but the cost of inaction (COI) is worse than costly mistakes. “Where is Osun State in the scheme of things in Nigeria today? In spite of our enormous natural resources, including a very vibrant populace. We will grow the unskilled, semi-skilled and highly skilled Osunlites and make them productive, competitive and efficient. I epitomise a uniquely ethical, transparent and accountable leadership. We will be highly disciplined and accountable to the people of Osun,” he said.

Ogunbiyi argues that with the money coming into the coffers of Osun now, the government should have done more than it is currently doing. “They are building bridges when they should be touching the lives of the people”. Osun has collected some N400 billion in allocation in the past two years, but there is nothing to show for it, he said. He promised to be bold and courageous in decision making, if elected, just like President Bola Tinubu. He said he has adopted Renewed Hope for Osun 2026 as his campaign slogan, describing it as the winning agenda which gave President Tinubu victory in 2023.

He said he would wrest power from the sitting governor, pointing out that the August 8, 2026 election will be a walkover once he gets the APC ticket. The primary, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable, is scheduled for between November 24 and December 15, this year.

  • Focus on leadership to attain full potentials, NIM urges Nigerians

    Adeyinka Akintunde

Nigerians have been urged to pay attention to three key areas of leadership, sound policies and strong institutions in order for the economy and the country at large to attain its full potentials.

This was the submission of a former governorship aspirant of Osun State, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi at the 2019 Distinguished Management Lecture of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), which took place in Lagos, on Tuesday.

Speaking on the theme, “Nigeria’s Progress, Principles and the new Metrics”, Ogunbiyi said that Nigeria is not suffering from lack of ideas and policies that can sharpen the economy, as there are abundance of well-written policies visions and reform agenda, but the problem is implementation of these policies, which has made international commentators describe the country as a failing state.

“Nigeria is replete with brilliant impeccable and well written policies, visions and reforms agenda. The problem is implementation. The policies, visions and agenda often end up as paper-works rubbished by insincere implementation efforts and corruption. For example launched in November 2003, the formulation and implementation NEEDS, National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategies, did not sort out our needs by 2008; its target date”, Ogunbiyi noted.

Ogunbiyi, who is the Chairman, Mutual Benefit Assurance Plc, further lamented that little or no attention is given to the average Nigerian on the street.

He recalled that “Dr. Oby Ezekwesili noted recently that an input variable or essential parameter for the desperately needed economic growth is Qualitative and Relevant Education.

Ogunbiyi, pointed out some new metrics needed to change the narrative of the Nigerian economy, development.

Some of them, he said,  include Good governance encompassing rule of law, peace and security, education and knowledge, investment and saving.

On his part, the President and Chairman of Council, NIM, Professor Olukunle Iyanda called for new ways to do things for progress to be achieved.

Represented by the Deputy President, Mrs. Pat Anabor, Iyanda said “For the nation to move in the right direction there is need to change the old ways of doing things. There is also need for attitudinal change and value reorientation. The interest of the nation must be put first at all times.

“The task of getting the country up and running on the right path should not be left for government alone; all hands must be on deck to take Nigeria to where we all want it to be.”

  • Edo signs tripartite agreement to benefit 455 cassava farmers

In a renewed drive to diversify the economic base of the state for expansion, the Edo State Government has signed a tripartite agreement with the Elephant Group and Heritage Agro Allied Foods (H2AFoods), of United States of America (USA), to strengthen the cassava value chain, which would benefit not less than 445 farmers across the state.

At the signing of the tripartite agreement, in Government House on Tuesday, Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security, Joe Okojie, said the cassava project would  span across the three senatorial districts of the state while financing of the project has been secured and disbursed to the farmers.

According to him, “238 hectares of land will be utilised in Edo North; 223 ha in Edo Central and 206 ha in Edo South. The farmers have been aggregated across the three districts and each farmer will get one and a half hectares of farmland.”

He said the state government would assist the farmers in land clearing, secure inputs while planting would commence at the end of April.

“We are bringing all the players across the value chain together and we have secured the loan for each farmer under the Anchor Borrowers Programme. The state government will be helping to de-risk land clearing and provide off-takers for the cassava farmers.”

Executive Director, Elephant Group, Akin Ogunbiyi, said the company is determined to transform cassava flour into industrial food ingredient and packaged convenience food in Nigeria and Africa at large.

He explained that the company has processing centres across the state and would buy directly from the cassava farmers.

“We want to add value to what the farmers are producing and are guaranteeing the off-take for the products. We have our processors in Edo North, Central, and South senatorial districts. Each is located close to the farmers,” Ogunbiyi added.

  • PDP to sanction three over Adeleke’s certificate, blackmail

The Southwest Zonal office of the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday said three members of the party in Osun state including, Olalekan Awosiyan, Thomas Ojetade and Sina Awodire would be recommended for sanctions in accordance with the party’s constitution for “dragging the Peoples Democratic Party and its gubernatorial candidate in the last Osun election, Senator Ademola Adeleke to court over issues that bothers on alleged fake certificate.”

The zonal Secretary of the party, Reverend Bunmi Jenyo who made the disclosure in Ibadan on Thursday, also accused the trio of “employing blackmail to destabilize the party for reasons best known to them.”

Jenyo who said the zone would soon recommend the alleged ‘culprits’ for disciplinary action, used the occasion to dispel the claim by Ojetade that he (Jenyo) threatened him to withdraw from the suit they instituted against Adeleke.

The PDP scribe, in company of another witness to the peace accord, a Senatorial Youth leader, Osun East, Mr Kazeem Ogunsola, claimed Mr Ojetade willingly agreed to withdraw the suit following a peace meeting initiated by the zonal Chairman, Dr Eddy Olafeso, and was never at any point pressurised to so do.

Jenyo reiterated that “the petitioner (Mr. Thomas Ojetade) opened up that the three plaintiffs involved in filing the suit at that time wanted to fight Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi’s course as a result of the party’s refusal to give him the Osun West Senatorial ticket and Coordinator, Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organization in Osun state”.

According to him, the case against the eligibility of Adeleke was pre-planned, prepared and signed at the Ile-Ogbo residence of the said former governorship aspirant.

He added that it was unfortunate that Ojetade is now coming out to play double game after giving his consent for peace to reign in the state’s chapter of the party.

According to Jenyo “Having been instructed by the leadership of our party in the Southwest under the Chairmanship of Dr. Eddy Olafeso, to investigate the matter and resolve it amicably, I went to lle Ife on Friday, November 16th to hold meetings with the petitioners.

“I could not locate all the three petitioners in the suit until the intervention of Ife Federal Constituency candidate, Hon. Abimbola Ajilesoro who connected me with Osun East Senatorial Youth Leader, Mr. Kazeem Ogunsola who brought in one of the petitioners, Mr. Ojetade Thomas to the house of Hon. Ajilesoro in Parakin, Ile-Ife on Saturday 17th November 2018 morning.

“I was invited to discuss with Mr. Thomas Ojetade and Mr. Kazeem Ogunsola at the venue but the meeting could not hold due to the unconducive atmosphere as a result of the various political activities at the house of the House of Representatives candidate. So, Hon. Ajilesoro suggested that both persons follow me to my house in Abere, Osogbo for a peaceful meeting.

“Mr. Thomas Ojetade who happily agreed also called another plaintiff in the suit, Mr. Awodire Sina Peter who also promised to join us in the course of the meeting. The latter however, did not show up while the meeting lasted.

“After a lengthy discussion, he felt sober and apologised for roles played in the case. As a result, he voluntarily agreed to withdraw from the case with immediate effect, in the interest of the Party.

“It was at that juncture, that he had to speak with the lawyer, Mr. Temitope Elusogbon, who prepared the affidavit, on the telephone. He signed the document in front of me and Mr. Kazeem Ogunsola and promised to come alongside the Youth Leader, to court on Monday November 19 for further processes to finally withdraw the case for out-of-court settlement. He asked for financial compensation for his efforts and further discussions were mutually agreed to be shifted till Monday, after court sitting.

“Obviously, the meeting was peaceful, no interference whatsoever, it was only three of us. I instructed my driver to drop him at the garage and offered him Six Thousand Naira (#6,000) only for his transportation back to Modakeke, his abode.

“I am particularly surprised to receive a phone call from one Inspector Emmanuel who asked whether I threatened him to sign the document. I, therefore explain to him that the concocted story of a police pointing gun at his head never arise, indeed, no policeman or any other person attended the meeting with the three of us only.

“Another surprise was a Press Conference he addressed in Osogbo on Tuesday where he wrongfully and deceitfully accused my personality of threatening him and his family.”

Also, Ogunsola confirmed that Ojetade signed the document without any threat whatsoever, saying “what actually happened is that Ojetade is trying to eat from two pots. No one threatened him. I can say this anywhere and anytime, he himself knows the truth. He should not allow himself to be used as a spoilt cook in Osun PDP.”

The trio had on 30 October 2018 approached a high court sitting in Osogbo, contending that the participation of the Senator Adeleke at, and his return as the winner of the party’s governorship primary held on 21st July, 2018, “for the purposes of electing the gubernatorial candidate of the party and his subsequent participation at the governorship election of the 22nd September, 2018 as the party’s candidate was null and void on the account of false information and submission of false documents to electoral commission.”

  • Mutual Benefits introduces Nollywood, school, 33 other products

Other products launched by the firm are motor dealers complimentary insurance; school insurance; church insurance; SME comprehensive; event centre; juvenile life; law firm insurance; hair salon insurance; laundry and cleaning insurance; mortgage endowment among others.

Its Group Managing Director, Akin Ogunbiyi while unveiling the products in Lagos said they are designed to meet the needs of professionals in different sector of the country.

He said the firm researched into the needs of the people and found out that the major problem with insurance in the country is accessibility and affordability to the insurance companies and their products.

He said: “We discovered that if people have access to insurance and see the benefits they will derive, they will buy the products. This has also made us to go into the retail business which is a bit different from microinsurance. This way, the product will become more affordable to the people. Presently, we have 76 products that are selling fast and we are adding 36 new ones.

“We believe the products too will empower the people which are what we look out for. We have empowered people like pepper sellers association, pure water association, butchers, etc, such that they now have their tools, machineries and companies. Our priority is that we have a gospel of insurance for it to take its rightful position within the economy.”

Also speaking, its Assistant General Manager, Mr. Demola Fagbayi said the new products are generic to the need of the people.

He said they are also coming at a discounted rate and have been narrowed down to meet the basic needs of professionals in the real estate, health , and education sectors of the economy.

He said: “We want people to get value for their money. We narrow the products down to customer needs such that they do not have to pay premium for what they do not need.”
