  • Leave good legacy for coming generations, Kolade, Akinde urge Nigerians

Former Nigeria Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Dr. Christopher Kolade, has called on Nigerians and leaders, especially those that have just taken the mantle of leadership during the last elections, to take cognizance of what they are doing and note that they are expected to leave a good legacy for the coming generations.

Kolade made the remarks yesterday during the launch of a book titled: “Exemplary Christians in the Nigerian Public Square,” written by the former International Director, Scriptures Union, Mr. Emmanuel Oladipo.

At the event, which took place at Chapel of the Healing Cross, Idiaraba, Lagos, Kolade said “the first thing I want everyone to remember and to appreciate all the time is that we are here today.  We were not here yesterday and some other people are going to be here tomorrow.  Therefore, we should try to give our best to Nigeria today while we are here”.

“Secondly, it takes the grace of God to be good and we should realise that it is the Supreme God who has authority and who can decide how to use the power given to man.  We should therefore submit ourselves to Him, he said.

The Chairman of the occasion, the Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos and Bishop of Lagos Mainland (emeritus), the Most Revd. Adebayo Akinde, said things had turned upside down because of the attitude of many Nigerians and it has been increasingly difficult to know what is right and yet, God’s standard has not changed.

The Author of the book, Oladipo, said he was spurred to write the book based on his discovery that Nigeria was not a country that is respected during the period he travelled around the world, adding that when he came back, he was surprised to note that there were some people committed to a special life of integrity.

  • Clerics, politicians eulogise retiring Akinde

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun; Catholic Bishop of Lagos Alfred Adewale Martins; Alake of Egbaland Oba Michael Gbadebo; Primate of the African Church Rev Emmanuel Udofia and Anglican Bishop of Lagos Rev Adebola Ademowo have poured encomiums on the retiring Archbishop of Lagos Mainland, Rev Adebayo Akinde.

They spoke glowingly of the preacher who took over the Diocese from the scratch and built it to a force within the Anglican Communion.

They spoke during the First Session of the Fourth Synod of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland Anglican Communion at All Saints Church, Yaba in Lagos.

The Synod with the theme: ’Thy Hand O Lord has Guided’ will be the last hosted by Akinde before he retires in August on attainment of 70 years.

Ademowo said the Diocese of Lagos Mainland has had a rapid growth through the team spirit and leadership of Akinde.

“Akinde is a man of impeccable human relationship and humble personality which has opened doors to his greatness. His life is a lesson to us all,” he stressed.

Rev Martins, who said he has known Akinde’s many sterling qualities, advocated for  ‘One Church, One Faith, One Christ’, as the theme for the upcoming collaboration between the Catholic and Anglican Church in Lagos.

He hoped the collaboration will provide infrastructure for the enhancement of the lives of Lagos residents.

According to Oba Gbadebo, Akinde’s best is yet to come.

Amosun added that Akinde has served the vineyard very well and charged the clergy there to rise to the challenges and serve the communities.

Akinde gave an emotional presidential address, where he noted that though it has not been the best times for the nation,

Nigerians must realise that God is at the helm of affairs regardless of who is in power.

“God rules in the affairs of men. Leaders are His agents for accomplishing His plans and purposes and we should therefore submit to His will.”

He charged the federal government to steer the nation to greater prosperity by adopting policies that will improve the standard of living of Nigerians and systematically confront and tackle corruption which has become a serious national malaise.

According to him: “Building a strong nation entails putting in place a system that extols the virtues of handwork, godliness, equity and unity amongst the various ethnic and religious components of the country.

“Measures should be put in place to check the excesses of religious extremists and ethic jingoists. Every section of the country should be made to feel sense of belonging.”

  • Emulate Jesus’ sacrifice, Akinde tells citizens

The Archbishop, Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos and Bishop, Diocese of Lagos Mainland, Most Rev Adebayo Akinde, has urged Nigerians to emulate the sacrificial life of Jesus by working to improve the lives of others around them.

Akinde spoke in an interview with reporters yesterday during the Easter Day celebration at the Cathedral of Saint Jude, Anglican Church, Ebute-Meta, Lagos.

According to him, the death and resurrection of Jesus should remind Nigerians of the need to be selfless and sacrifice their time, energy and skill to help others in need.

He said Nigeria would be a better place where equity, justice and fair-play are enthroned when the citizens subscribe to the lifestyle of giving as exemplified by Jesus Christ.

“Easter is a celebration of love, commitment, passion and sacrifice that Jesus Christ gave with his life to reconcile man back to God,” he said.

“For us to benefit from the death of Jesus Christ, we must put our trust in God through Jesus Christ. Christianity does not need any embellishment or assistance but only trust in Jesus, which opens to all of us, the enormous blessing of the resurrection.

“We can experience peace internally, and in our nation when we embrace the sacrifice that Christ has made and key into the conditions of salvation, which include confessing our sins, forsaking them and asking God for grace to live for him.”

He added that the country’s transformation would be dependent on government’s policies and programme as well as the church that is committed to reproducing the life of obedience to Jesus Christ in all that they say or do.
