    Ondo 2024: Thugs destroying my billboards, Akinterinwa cries out

    Ex-Commissioner for Finance in Ondo State, Mr. Wale Akinterinwa, who is also a governorship aspirant in the All Progressives Congress (APC), has raised the alarm over continued destruction of his campaign billboards by suspected thugs.

    He alleged that the thugs were sponsored by Ondo State Government, adding that the hoodlums threatened the affected advertising agency, Global Outdoor Service Ltd, not to replace the destroyed billboards.

    The former commissioner, who spoke through Wale Akinterinwa Campaign Organisation, alleged that the thugs also threatened to revoke the licence of the advertising agency if the billboards were replaced.

    Spokesman for the organisation, Segun Ajiboye, said Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s earlier promise to bring the culprits behind the attacks to book did not materialise, adding that nothing was heard of the case.

    He said: “Despite the constant denial by the administration of Governor Aiyedatiwa, the hoodlums have continued to unleash terror and destruction on members and properties of other governorship aspirants.

    “The thugs went on the rampage last Friday in Akure and destroyed the billboards of our principal, Wale Akinterinwa.”

    Immediate past Ondo Commissioner for Finance Wale Akinterinwa has decried what he called the return of thuggery to the political space in the State.

    Akinterinwa, who is a governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleged the thugs also attacked citizens who came out to welcome President Bola Tinubu to the state.

    Akinterinwa who spoke in a statement by spokesman of his Campaign Structure, Segun Ajiboye, alleged the thugs were sponsored by Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa.

    According to him : “The thugs, fully loaded in unmarked vehicles, did not in any way hide their devilish intentions, as they went round major streets of Akure, destroying the bill boards of the other gubernatorial aspirants of the All Progressives Congress.

    “The thugs fully armed with different types of guns, shot sporadically into the air to create fears in the people.

    “Expectedly, thousands of supporters of the APC who had prepared to receive the president ran helter-skelter for dear lives.

    “The ugly incident was coming barely 24 hours after the Wale Akinterinwa Campaign Structure raised the alarm about the dastardly activities by certain element acting for and on behalf of Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa to prevent members of the APC and leaders who are not in his camp to receive Mr President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR during his visit to Akure.

    “Today’s action by the thugs acting on the directives of Mr Governor is most undemocratic, disrespectful, unreasonable and disdainful attempt by any Chief executive in the anals of democracy in Nigeria.

    “This is a sad reminder of the wicked old days in the politics of our dear state. It marks an avoidable return to the dark days of hooligans and political bandits in Ondo state.”

    But Chief Press Secretary to Governor Aiyedatiwa, Ebenezer Adeniyan, said nobody associated with the Governor would destroy bill boards or attack innocent citizens.

    “That is not true. I do not know where they got the information from,” he said.

    The lawmaker representing Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo/Odigbo Federal Constituency, Mr. Festus Adefiranye, has urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) not to compensate incompetence for merit on who emerges as the party’s candidate.

    He described former Commissioner for Finance, Wale Akinterinwa, as the best man to take over the affairs of Ondo State.

    Ondo APC primary election is scheduled to hold in April and over 10 persons have declared intention to contest.

    Adefiranye was one of the lawmakers that reported Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over poor handling of the party’s affairs.

    Adefiranye, who spoke at a rally of Ondo APC youths, said the letter he and other five members of the House of Representatives Caucus of the APC wrote to President Tinubu against Governor Aiyedatiwa was receiving attention from the targeted audience.

    Speaking during the meeting of some APC youth leaders in Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo Local Government, Adefiranye said Akinterinwa stood the best chance among APC aspirants to emerge as the governorship candidate.

    He said: “Akinterinwa is well-grounded in the politics of the state and possesses the requisite experience to govern the state if elected as governor.”

    “There is nothing we will gain in rancour. I advise our leaders to let us work together. If we have different candidates, let us campaign for them without rancour. By the grace of God, our party will succeed.”

    The legislator assured APC youth leaders that he would defend their interests economically and politically.

    Those in attendance endorsed the candidacy of Akinterinwa, while passing a vote of confidence in Adefinraye as the lawmaker representing the constituency.
