  • Obas to meet Ambode over Lagos-Badagry Expressway

The Akran of Badagry, De Aholu Menu-Toyi I, on Tuesday said the Lagos Council of Obas would soon meet Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode over the deplorable state of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

Menu-Toyi I  told the News Agency of Nigeria in Badagry that the deplorable state of the road had retarded the growth of the ancient city and movement of people.

The monarch said that the council had decided to pay a visit to the governor in order to hasten work on the ongoing road construction between Mile 2 and Okokomaiko.

“I am not happy with the state of the road. Lagos-Badagry Expressway is an international road, which is supposed to be the responsibility of Federal Government, but it has been abandoned.

“The road is deterring investors from coming to the town, while tourists are no longer visiting Badagry.

“Sons and daughters of the land now prefer to enjoy their holidays in Lagos instead of coming home.

“Motorists and passengers spend up to five hours in the gridlock before getting to the city, a journey that is supposed to take an hour.

“The road has now become a deathtrap to my citizens, this is sad,” the monarch said.

Meanwhile, Babatunde Hunpe, the Special Adviser to Ambode on Environment, told NAN that the state government was awaiting Federal Government’s approval to reconstruct Okokomaiko/Seme Border Section of the expressway.

Hunpe said that work on the road would start immediately the state government secured the approval.

  • Ambode donates vehicles, ambulance to Lagos Prison

…Says Reforms Critical To Decongest Prisons

…Two Inmates Currently Pursuing PhD-Lagos Controller Of Prisons

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday donated vehicles and other equipment to the Lagos Prison Services, stressing the need for major reforms to be carried out across the country to de-congest prisons.

Among the vehicles donated include five Toyota Hilux, five Green Maria and one Ambulance, assuring that the vehicles would be delivered to the Lagos Prison Services by September.

Governor Ambode, who made the donation when he received a delegation from the Nigeria Prison Services, Lagos Command, led by the Controller, Mr. Tunde Ladipo, at his residence in Epe, said the donation was his administration’s contribution to make the prisons more conducive.

He expressed concern that Lagos was also having its fair share of congestion as over 70 percent of inmates across prisons in the State were awaiting trial.

“I am very concerned about congestion of prisons in the State. For a State like Lagos where development is ongoing, it is bound to attract people from across other States and neighbouring countries and this means increase in population.  We are providing these critical assistance to the prison authorities to make them more efficient and make our prisons more conducive.

“However, there is no better time to carry out reforms in our prisons and it is necessary especially as regards the decongestion of the prison,” the Governor said.

He assured that the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy would look into some of the cases of inmates and see the possibility of granting official pardon to prisoners who have shown remorse, good behaviour and readiness to contribute meaningfully to the society.

Governor Ambode also directed the Special Adviser on Primary Healthcare, Dr. Olufemi Onanuga to provide adequate health services for all for the prisons in the State so as to prevent any outbreak of diseases.

“Once a city is safe, people will be more productive and it also means more revenue will come into the State,” he said.

Earlier, the Controller of Prisons, Lagos Command, Mr. Tunde Ladipo, said the visit was to remind the Governor of their requests for some vehicles and equipment to enhance their capacity to effectively transport and secure inmates awaiting trail to the courts, some of which the Governor granted at the visit.

Ladipo said as at January 31, 2018, 8191 inmates; 7887 males and 304 females, were in custody across the five prison facilities in the State including the Maximum Security Prison, Kirikiri; Medium Security Prison, Kirikiri; Female Security Prison, Kirikiri; Ikoyi Prison and Badagry Prison.

He disclosed that out of the number, 6290 inmates were awaiting trail and attending the various court jurisdictions in the State.

“The challenges towards fulfilling the responsibilities of effective prison duties are indeed are overwhelming and seriously challenging especially in a State with a large inmate population like Lagos,” he said.

The Lagos Prisons Boss while commending the Governor for his developmental strides as well as massive support to security organisations within the State, said the Lagos Prison Command was working towards reforming prisoners, revealing that two inmates, Kabiru Tunwase and Oladipupo Moshood were currently pursuing PhD in Business Administration and Peace and Conflict Resolution respectively.

  • Eid-el-Kabir: Embrace sacrifice, love, unity, Ambode urges Muslims

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday called on Muslims in Nigeria to embrace the values of sacrifice, love and continue to foster unity as they join their counterparts worldwide to celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festival.

In his Sallah message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, Governor Ambode said the period of the celebration was a clarion call for Nigerians to imbibe the lessons of the season such as selfless service to God and humanity, sacrifice and sincere commitment to righteous conducts in their private and public life.

He explained that the significance of the season should be beyond feasting, adding that as Muslims prepare to offer animal sacrifice in the prescribed days of the festival, the real essence should be to encourage piety, self-discipline and sacrifice.

Governor Ambode therefore called on all Nigerians to exhibit these values for the good of the country and shun any act capable of heating up the polity or causing distrust among various ethnic groups in the country.

“As we celebrate this auspicious occasion, let us renew our faith in our nation and implore the Almighty God to restore to us those values that place high premium on human life, love of neighbour and sharing even as we ventilate our faith in the unity of our dear country”, the Governor said.

“This period requires more patience, fortitude, tolerance, endurance, patriotism and a greater willingness to make personal sacrifices for the good of all,” he said.

The Governor also thanked Lagosians for supporting his administration, assuring that the Government would continue to do its best to serve the people and promote fairness and mutual tolerance among the populace, irrespective of their ethnic religion or political affiliation.

While wishing all Lagosians, especially adherents of the Islamic faith a happy Eid-el-Kabir celebration, Governor Ambode enjoined Nigerians in other parts of the country to continue to be their brothers’ keeper.

  • Road construction: Bravo Ambode but…

Even sceptics and opposition parties will commend Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the gigantic strides in massive road construction on-going in Agege, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ojokoro and other areas of the state. It is not easy but my observations for improvements are as follows:

It is regrettable that there are no proper organisations for such massive works going on in the rainy season. There are no signs/ diversions especially when major roads are blocked by culverts and/or heavy road equipments.

There is also indiscriminate pulling down of fences of houses resulting in increased robberies, hold-ups, untold hardship to road users, vehicles and pedestrians alike.

Also, the use of inexperienced architects and lack of enough civil drainage engineers on site are leading to adequate services because they don’t work at night so the work can’t be completed in record time.

Lack of adequate monitoring by professionals and on the spot assessments of works done should be regular to ensure standards.

I also suggest that there should be avenues for offering suggestions on site while the quality of asphalts should be checked to ensure they are done well.

  • How not to assess Lagos under Ambode

I say without any equivocation that this young man who is there now-AkinwunmiAmbode-he has raised the stake of performance (in Lagos State) especially in infrastructure.— Olabode George, chieftain of the opposition People’s Democratic Party,( PDP).

About the time strident critics in Nigeria had begun to come to terms with the reality of Lagos as standing out of the pack in an environment of ill-performing states posting distressing infrastructure-deficit indices, a global body has turned out a report suggesting the contrary. So on the one hand, we have the rare acclaim of a known censurer of the Ambode government; and on the hand we are being offered the partial picture of what is on the ground.

According to the 2018 Global Liveability Index released by The Economist Intelligence Unit(EIU) World Bank, ‘’Lagos is the third worst city to live in.’’ It examined 140 cities and placed Nigeria’s economic and commercial hub at 138, Syria and Bangladesh being the only two lower.

Vienna, the Austrian capital, was ranked the most liveable city in the world. Melbourne in Australia came in second place after a seven-year at number one. Japan’s Osaka came in at third position.

The ranking was based on five parameters: Political and Social Stability, Education, Culture, Environment, Infrastructure and Access to Health. For Infrastructure among the other factors, ‘’the quality of road network, quality of public transport, international links, availability of good quality housing, quality of energy provision, quality of water provision and quality of telecommunications were considered.’’

Interestingly, by the reckoning of a widely-travelled and respected Nigerian financial expert Mr. Bismarck Rewane, these are areas where Ambode’s Lagos has fared excellently. Not known for flippant comments on political and economic matters because of his integrity, Rewane has become a favourite of newsmen on hot-button issues. So when the EIU report came up, he spoke what many have regarded as the objective view.

He criticized the world body for its judgment that Lagos is the planet’s third worst city to choose to live in. It’s an unfair and harsh verdict, Rewane told an interviewer on a leading TV News station operating from Lagos last week. He declared solemnly: ‘’First and foremost, I think then report is subjective and it is based on warped criteria. Certainly, in a survey that says that number 86 is Johannesburg when you talk about crime, terrorism, insurgency and Lagos is 138 out of 140, it’s unfortunate. I feel safer in Lagos than in Johannesburg…I must come out strongly that the EIU …is a bit subjective and does not reflect the truth. Lagos is definitely not the third worst city to live in in the world. I stand by that and I am ready to join issues with the Economic Intelligence Unit whom I respect anyway…’’

His stand tallies with those of most dispassionate observers who taken keen interest in developments in this state growing by leaps and bounds every day. Adjudged the fastest growing and the fifth largest economy in Africa, Lagos is heading for the 20 million population mark, earnings it the mega polis epithet. That poses inherent security and infrastructure challenges characteristic of such climes.

But that is precisely where to dig deep to find out if the Lagos authorities are aware the world is watching them to know if they are tackling the issues appropriately and in accordance with global best practices. The world has become a small space, any corner of which you can access from the comfort of your room. What happens in your backyard or bedroom is in the world domain, not even public domain. So the world can’t but notice the mammoth activity of urban renewal in Lagos. The entire state has become a veritable construction site, where new roads are either being built or existing ones are experiencing a face-lift via expansion and modernization. And to secure lives, residential and office apartments which have failed safety are being pulled down to make way for befitting centres of commerce and habitation.

The transport sector is similarly being driven to the next level, with the phasing out of the ubiquitous molue. The more appealing luxurious Lagbus fleet are taking over on newly created corridors not only to add aesthetic beauty to the city landscape, but also to deepen the security of commuters.

There is now an unprecedented move by the Ambode government to trash the notorious slums in the state into the dustbin of the past. He has come under attack for attempting what his predecessors dared not to undertake: displacing the huge ghettoes and rickety markets to create for modern and affordable settlements and business centres.

But, as ex-Ghanaian President Jerry Rawlings told complaining compatriots when he was rebuilding Ghana after years of decay, ‘’it is a bitter pill that must be taken for lasting relief’’. Time is proving him right, because Ghana has enjoyed a sane and equable political and economic history since his days. It was a challenge the current generation of Ghanaian would have been battling with if Rawlings hadn’t confronted it then.

I think when reports of the nature under review are coming up, their authors must also consider on-going projects of renewal in societies being assessed. That way, they would avoid producing halfway verdicts of the type being criticized by well-meaning Nigerians. The critics are not those in government or so-called sponsored commentators. They are those who believe the EIU has not been fair to an administration whose members are having sleepless nights in order to make Lagos safe and turn it into a tourism haven as well as the investors’ dream destination.

  • Ambode calls for stiffer penalties against sexual, gender based violence

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi  Ambode  on Thursday urged everyone to take a common stand against sexual and gender- based violence by advocating for the review of our laws to provide stiffer punishments for offenders given the serious threat the evil act poses to safety and security of women and the girl-child.

The Governor who spoke through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tunji Bello at the 18th Regular National Council Meeting on Women Affairs and Social Development held at the Academy Inn, Agidingbi, Ikeja, added that it constitute a social menace that must be kicked out of the nation’s social system in order to protect and preserve the dignity of womanhood.

He posited that to achieve social inclusion and integration for socio-economic development, everyone must identify and address decisively issues of gender inequality, girl child education, domestic violence and sexual abuse that have limited the capacity of women to achieve their full potentials and contribute their quota to the development of the economy.

“In Lagos State, the issue of sexual abuse and gender- based violence is being addressed relentlessly through the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT)”, he explained.

He added that the State Government is committed to ensuring the growth and development of the economy in every facet which explains why it has continued to invest significantly on safety and security as no economy can thrive in an atmosphere of fear, chaos and general insecurity.

He said the theme for this 18th Regular National Council Meeting: “Peace, Security and Social Inclusion; Key Building Blocks for Achieving Economic Growth and Sustainable Development” is not only apt but also touches directly the critical issues that determine the level of prosperity that can be attained by any society.

He stressed that the choice of the theme is instructive and reveals the untold hardship usually suffered by women and children in a state of insecurity, as well as the need to increase the involvement of women in the social, political and economic activities of the society.

The Governor stated that the State remains committed to a system of governance which does not discriminate on the basis of gender, ethnicity and physical disability and has ensured through various platforms, that all citizens without bias to gender have the opportunity to express their opinions on issues especially those that directly affect them.

He explained that the Government believes in empowering the informal sector, within which women constitute the majority, so as to facilitate the process of socio-economic inclusion, adding that the mandate of Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (ETF) is to identify genuine and credible entrepreneurs and financially empower them to grow their businesses and establish new ones.

Earlier in her remarks, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Senator Aisha Jumai Alhassan had commended the Lagos State Government for playing the lead role in domesticating the Children Rights Act and for its implementation.

She added that the efforts made by Lagos State Government in eradicating gender based violence and continuous empowerment initiatives for women are truly appreciated.

Also in her address, the Commissioner for Women affairs and Poverty Alleviation  Hon (Mrs) Lola Akande who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs.  Abiola Liadi stated that the State Government in various ways has practicalised how social inclusion is not negotiable in the bid for any society to achieve sustainable development across board.

  • Ambode urges state govts to imbibe legislature harmony

Gov.  Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Friday attributed the massive development going on in the state to the harmonious relationship between the state executive and legislature.
Ambode said this when he received the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria at the Lagos House, Alausa,  Ikeja.

Isamaila said that the Conference  would, among other things, deliberate on how  to implement  the recently assented bill granting financial autonomy to state legislative and judicial arms of government.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari, on June 8, assented to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 Alteration Act (4th Alteration Act 4, 9, 16, and 21) which grants financial autonomy to the State Houses of Assembly and the Judiciary.

  • Ambode seeks patronage of made-in-Nigeria goods

The Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has advised Nigerians to patronize goods made in the country to create more jobs and develop the economy.

Speaking during the inauguration of the furniture factory, “The Home and You” built by Mrs. Feyisola Abiru, in Ikorodu, Ambode  said the factory would produce industrial made-in-Nigeria furniture that can compete globally for both corporate and home use within and outside the country.  He said it is only through this means that the local economy could be developed.

Represented by Rotimi Ogunleye and Mrs. Olayinka Oladunayo, commissioners for Physical Planning and Commerce & Industry respectively, the governor commended Mrs Abiru for citing the factory at Ibeshe, a suburb of Ikorodu.

“This is the first furniture company of its kind in the Ikorodu axis and a clear indication that the efforts of Lagos Sate government to provide security and infrastructure is beginning to yield positive fruits,” he said.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Abiru, identified, “passion and an undying crave for success had been the reason I was able to whether the storms in the early days of the 21 year old business.”

She commended the Bank of Industry (BoI), in the realisation of the noble dream which today has become one of the major economic drivers in the state and Nigeria as a whole.

“But for the support from BoI, we won’t be here today. They gave us the first facility in 2006 to get us running. We acquired world class machines from Italy, when we needed to improve on our quality and expand the capacity of the business, we approached them again for another facility which was granted in 2017,” she said.
