  • Lagos set for new bus experience

The news that the bus reform initiative (BRI) by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode may soon begin operations is cheery to many, who have been looking forward to a more comfortable alternative than putting their vehicles on the road, writes ADEYINKA ADERIBIGBE

When in 2017, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode vowed to banish the yellow buses from the high streets of Lagos, many thought it was another bogus promise. But last week, it seemed as if the dream’s fulfillment was just weeks away, as the state Transportation Commissioner Ladi Lawanson said the government would be rolling out 820 buses,  to signpost the administration’s determination to reform the state’s transportation architecture.

Like former Governor Babatunde Fashola, who pushed the ubiquitous, but rickety Molue, away from the state’s transportation system with the Bus Rapid Transit, (BRT), Ambode may, with the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) bequeath a novel initiative, which if sustained could transform the state’s transportation landscape forever.

According to Lawanson, the BRI is government’s way of seizing the transportation space that had long been controlled by private sector operators, who have formed themselves into “lords and untouchable masters of the road”.

Government, he said, was set to begin a process of organising the sector and make it more responsive to the yearnings of moving a robust population of commuters in a safe, comfortable, cheap and properly regulated public transportation system.

He said: “The bus reform project is designed to find solutions to perennial challenges of poor quality service by bus operators, unpredictable fare, unhealthy competition, high rate of accidents and unreliable service.”

Under the reform, government, he said, would be replacing the yellow mini buses with air conditioned buses of uniformed specification that would run on predictable bus schedules and defined routes that would be supported by appropriate infrastructure.

Signaling this project in 2017, Governor Ambode said the state would be voting N30 billion to a rounded project that would include the provision of terminal infrastructure, 100 bus shelters and new buses that would provide comfortable alternative to commuters.

Ikeja Bus Terminal became the flagship of the initiative and others soon sprang up at TBS, Yaba, Oyingbo, Ojota, Ajah, and Agege, with another proposed for Maryland. These are to be complemented by the world class and iconic Oshodi Interchange, the three first multi-storey terminals to be delivered by May.

Indeed, the most audacious of Ambode’s impact on governance in Lagos may well be the bus reform.

That made Lawanson to urge the people to take ownership of the project and guard against its misuse and vandalisation.

In the first phase of the project, 75 out of the planned 100 bus shelters have been completed, to support the 820 buses that are ready to flag-off operation anytime soon.

The third leg is the training of professional drivers and the acquisition of Intelligent Transport System (ITS), for a seamless operation of its rolling stock and travel convenience of commuters.

From its initial roll off dateline of October, the BRI, which was supposed to intergrate 23 routes and  restore Lagosians’ confidence in public transportation, had suffered three postponements. The first was in October, last year, then January, this year, and later pushed  to after the election by the governor.

While inspecting all the connected projects in January, Ambode had hinted that while government had imported the first phase of 820 buses, its intention was to ensure that the remaining buses needed for injection into the system would be rolled out of the plant at Awoyaya, in Ibeju-Lekki and Epe, where an assembly plant is presently sprouting.

The buses, he said, would be managed by the Lagos Bus Assets Limited, and would be franchised to fleet operators, under whose canopy the present yellow bus operators with capacity to manage fleets could scale up their operations.

“Let me again restate that this is not in any way a move to ban the yellow buses or take them away from the roads. It is to give to Lagos a modern transport service that befits a mega city.

“All transport unions will be given an offer of first refusal because it will run on a franchise system where franchise operators will be allocated a multiple of 50, 100 to 200 buses.

“Of the 3,600 large capacity, 1,400 would be medium capacity buses. The buses will carry between 30 to 47 passengers and come with modern facilities, such as wifi, mobile phone charging points, among other conveniences.”

He noted that with the eventual take-off of the reform, there would be a re-routing of existing bus operators to service the inner roads.

This, the commissioner said, would provide transportation alternatives closer to the residents.

Available data from the Ministry of Transportation showed that the rickety yellow buses account for about three million out of the seven million vehicles on the state’s roads.

With a population of 26.6 million, 12 million people depend on rickety private commercial buses and about eight million walk as a form of transportation. Providing acceptable, affordable and comfortable means of transportation for the common man has remained a major headache for successive governments.

Transportation in Lagos State had been largely private-sector driven, with large fleet operators, dominating the space since pre-independence era.

The intervention of organised operators in transportation services saw the introduction of more ‘modern’ large-capacity buses, which gave birth to molue, which survived for decades and many governments until the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s initiatives pushed them to operate on the fringes.

With the cancellation of the Lagos Metroline project in 1983, the government had in 1986 diverted the World Bank assistance into the Bus Transit option, with the Lagos State Transport Corporation (LSTC), which injected 300 large capacity buses managed by LSTC.

Although the LSTC failed, but from its ashes came Lagos State Bus Assets Limited (LAGBUS), and a much stronger and adequately-backed Lagos Area Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LAMATA) that spear-headed the state’s strategic transportation masterplan (STMP) since the turn of the millennium.

That was why the governor said he would be rolling out a N100 billion bond to finance its numerous initiatives aimed at making the movement of people and goods painless.

Of this, the government will provide N30 billion capital to elicit interest, while investors are to make up the balance.

Ambode, by concentrating on deepening the roads, seemed to have convinced himself to go by the most plausible alternative that can bring quick returns.

He said: “We decided that no matter the solution that we want to give the traffic management, we must also now provide a comfortable means of moving people, and encourage the middle class and majority of our people to drop their cars at home. That is the idea with this bus initiative, which is to prepare Lagos to be a global competitor.”

Before Ambode, getting the upper and middle classes of the society to drop their cars and use other alternatives have been at the heart of a strategic transportation planning over the past two decades.

From the era when bicycles made way for vehicles and the roads became less pedestrian-friendly, successive administrations have been trying to introduce initiatives aimed at restraining vehicular density in a state, whose vehicular density is 58 per cent above the national average.

Some of the initiatives included the construction of roads with improved Intelligent Traffic Control Systems (ITS), roads with appropriate pedestrian walkways and bicycle lanes have been experimented with.

A number of stakeholders agreed that the rickety yellow buses have become an embarrassment to a state moving from a megacity to becoming a smart technology driven city.

Mr Patrick Adenusi of Safety Without Borders said the yellow buses were a shame to the state’s megacity status. Arguing that the buses were not built for services to which they had been deployed, Adenusi said many commuters have been killed and others injured by the recklessness of their operators.

Ambode said it might not be too long for Lagos to blaze a trail in public transportation where the people are given a new deal in land transportation.

With two of the terminals ready, it may not be too long before Lagosians begin to enjoy a new dividend of comfortable, more organised public transportation that would meet the state’s status as the star of the black race and the third biggest economy in Africa by 2020.

  • Weah, Drogba to play at Ambode farewell football match

The organising committee for Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode farewell football match has confirmed 18 May for the high profile game.

The epoch match, according to the organisers, would see former World Footballer of the Year and President of Liberia, George Weah play along with notable world football legends including Didier Drogba.

The Chairman Organising Committee for ‘The Match’, Nigerian ex-international, Wahidi Akanni, in a statement in Lagos on Wednesday,  disclosed that the game was aimed at giving  Ambode a befitting farewell.

“Gov. Ambode has served Lagos meritoriously for four years, so the match will be played at the newly remodeled Onikan Stadium on 18 May, which is 11 days to his final handover on 29 May.

“Aside from George Weah and Drogba, other African legends have signed up for the game between African Legends and Ex- Super Eagles’ stars.

“Others who will play on the side of the African legends are Michael Essien and Samuel Eto’O Fills, ” Akanni said.

He also stated that, for the event to have trappings of youth football development,  there would be a football clinic at the Campos Square.

“The stage has been set for a curtain raiser between Lagos United Under-15 boys and girls against their Kebbi State counterparts.

“This is to spice up the game aimed to celebrating the sports achievements of Ambode in Lagos State.

“The U-15 games are aimed at raising awareness for grassroots football development, which has gained prominence across the country.

“The proceeds from these games will be donated to the children of some ex-internationals who have been finding it difficult to pay school fees,” he said.

  • Ambode performs pre-launch of $50m factory in Lekki Free Zone

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Sunday performed the pre-launch of a $50 million manufacturing plant in the Lekki Free Zone,  and expressed his optimism that the facility would go a long way to create more jobs.

The governor speaking at the pre-launch of the factory belonging to Longrich, a Chinese firm,  said that the facility would also boost the nation’s foreign exchange earnings.

He said that the facility was another success story of the efforts of the government in attracting investment and  an eloquent confirmation of the strategic importance of the free trade zone to the state’s economy.

He said that   no less than 25 companies had   sett up their  manufacturing plants within the zone, saying that it was indeed gratifying that the efforts to drive investments were yielding positive results.

Ambode said that the most important thing to him was that whether in government or outside of government, factories were springing up in the zone, thereby creating job opportunities for the people and improving the economy of the state.

According to the governor, one of the most fulfilling feelings in life is to see one’s efforts yielding positive results.

Ambode said: ”It gives me immense satisfaction to be here today to witness this pre-launch   of Longrich Nigeria Manufacturing Plant to be located in the Lekki Free Zone in Lagos State, Nigeria.

”At the inception of this administration, one of our core focus areas was attracting investments to our state; to create employment opportunities  for our people and wealth for our investors.

”Today’s event is one of those crowning moments that confirm that our efforts have been rewarded.”

He commended Longrich Group of Companies for the decision to site the $50million factory in Lagos of all the cities and countries in Africa, saying the state and the country stand to benefit immensely from the investment.

”I have been informed that this Lekki Longrich facility, upon completion, will not only be the hub for the distribution of the products to the African sub-region but will provide employment for at least 1,000 new workers in our state.

”It will boost the nation’s foreign exchange earnings from exportation of manufactured products to other African countries.

”If we go by the success story of Longrich in China and the company’s track record, there is no doubt that Longrich Nigeria will be modelled after the world class  LONGLIQI Bio-Industrial Park in China which covers an area of more than 133 hectares and serves as location of LONGLIQI Bio-Science Co., Ltd,” Ambode said.

While describing the firm as a global brand with a range of top class quality products and unique business model, the governor lauded the fact that Longrich had created wealth for over 500,000 people.

These people, he added, were trading in more than 30  brands of the company, with the majority of the traders residing in the state.

Ambode assured the people that the state government would continue to play its role as business enablers, especially by providing the necessary infrastructure and services required to support all investors and businesses who decide to make Lagos their home.

”Our administration has embarked on massive and ambitious projects.

”We have introduced public sector reforms and policies aimed at making it easier to do business in our state.

”Our governmental institutions like the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Office of Public Private Partnership and Office of Overseas Affairs and Investment are more than ever before, in the fore front of providing an enabling business environment for local and foreign investments to thrive.

”These are just a few indicators to assure you of our commitment to securing not just Longrich’s investment in the South-West quadrant of Lekki Free Zone but to secure and attract more investments to our state,” he said.

Ambode described the Lekki Free Zone as the flagship of the state government’s industrial development drive.

He aid that aside the physical amenities, the facility would also come with a bundle of incentives that would propel business prosperity.

He added that with the ongoing gas pipeline laying to the zone nearing completion, power generation costs, which accounts for s significant production cost, would soon be significantly reduced.

The governor reiterated the commitment of the state government to sustain the business environment and protect all investments in the state.

Earlier, the Chairman of Longrich, Mr Xu Zhiwei commended the governor for creating an  enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the state.

Zhiwei said it was on record that the governor’s efforts made the setting up of the factory which would fully take off in October 2019 possible.

”I want to thank Gov. Ambode. He (Ambode) gave us the enabling environment; he gave us the full support; he embraced our dreams and believe in us.

”We can also feel the safety and security in Lagos State,” Zhiwei said. (NAN)

  • Ambode: The shape of hope to come

THE best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done… Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), 26th President of the United States of America.

Gradually, Nigerians are being led into the new world in which they would live under the second coming of President Muhammadu Buhari. Every day since he was reelected, he has unveiled in bits what his encore presidency would look like. He opened a chink shortly after the result of the February 23 ballot was announced. Buhari said he would run an ‘inclusive’ administration where all stakeholders would be accommodated. Days after, he widened the aperture, telling us what was in the offing: only men and women of integrity would make his cabinet.

Then in the closing week of March, he dropped more hints: he said he would put in all effort to ensure the best for Nigeria and her citizens when his second term begins on May 29, 2019. His words:” I assure you I will do my best during the second term. We will work for Nigeria and her people.”

When leaders publicly make such solemn declarations, they assume the aura and force of covenants or contracts that must be redeemed or honoured. You can’t break them for the sake of your integrity and good name. Now running such an ‘impeccable’ administration in the interest of the people as Buhari is planning simply implies you populate your government with ‘good’ men and women, as the 26th US President counsels above. They must be tested citizens whose past bears no blemish. Nor do they have a baggage of scandals that slows down governance. Still more: they must be on the same page each step of the way with the leader of government and other strategic functionaries of the system.

If truly we want Nigeria to move into the ‘next level’ of greatness, the mantra the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) waved before us to win the presidential ballot, then we must go for such men in the next government. All over the country, we can locate them, not requiring a trip to Mars or some other outer planet.

One personality that easily springs up to meet these qualifications is Akinwunmi Ambode, the Governor of Lagos State, who has been described superlatively as the ‘Governor General of Nigeria’. After a survey of the transcendent achievements of Ambode in all areas of performance in the economic powerhouse of Nigeria, Rauf Aregbesola, himself then a governor in Osun State, turned in the verdict that indeed Ambode is first among equals.

Receiving Ambode in his office in Osogbo, the state capital, Aregbesola said:” I recognise the Governor of Lagos State who by my own assessment is the Governor General of Nigeria. I say so for a very good reason. It is not a question of age of the occupant of that office or his tenure. It is simply an attestation to the fact that the economy of Lagos (under the guidance of Ambode) is about the summation of the economies of thirty states in Nigeria. One will be deceiving himself not to recognise that fact.” Aregbesola went on to ascribe the feat to what he called the ‘brilliant performance’ of Ambode.

Observers have said that Aregbesola only alluded to a national feat by Ambode. They assert that Ambode’s era has also earned Nigeria a positive place in contemporary annals, which put Lagos as the fifth largest economy in Africa. This makes it bigger than Cote d’Ivoire and Kenya, two of the continent’s most promising economies. Neighbouring Ghana, reputed to be one of Africa’s poster nations in national growth rates, also falls behind Lagos in the Ambode dispensation.

At the higher federal plane, the country can do with the wand Ambode deployed to give Lagos this facelift, now that President Buhari is shopping for a fresh and dynamic engine to take the country to the next level.

He is going to be available for call-up to Buhari’s team from May 29, after an outstanding work in Lagos where he gifted residents with some of the best urban and rural development deliveries ever witnessed in Nigeria. The president will find in Ambode a kindred spirit, whose passion is integrity in hard and ceaseless work to ease the plight of the masses.

Both are pro-poor. Buhari revealed this streak repeatedly as he gave salary-defaulting states huge amounts as bailouts to save the civil servants from hardship. In Lagos, Ambode revealed this same pro-people inclination by not owing salaries and by doling out billions of naira at a go to meet the pension of senior citizens. The humble backgrounds of the duo have influenced them to show pity to the vulnerable of the society. We need such leaders to identify with the people they govern, if we are not to have a disturbing cleavage between government and the citizens that pushes a nation to the precipice.

But the abiding attribute Lagosians have noticed in their governor is his knack for legacy monuments for the benefit of the society. I dare say Ambode has about the same adroitness at thinking up first class structures as the legendary Brazilian striker Pele had for scoring goals during his days. The footballer is credited with 1281 goals in 1363 appearances, the highest by any player.

Now spread across the small water-soaked area called Lagos are great landmarks that some societies only get during a succession of administrations or over generations of leaders. However under four years, Ambode’s government has presented us with great mementos that will still command the attention of the future. Even now, as he prepares to leave the scene, he has taken over the expansion, rehabilitation and complete upgrade of the Murtala Mohammed Airport Road. It’s sordid state used to be the nemesis of motorists and a reproach to the nation, given its status as the window to our country, being the busiest airport not only in Nigeria but the West African sub-region. It’s a federal road; but Ambode can’t tolerate what brings shame to his fatherland, the same way Buhari wouldn’t stand shameful treatment of the masses!

Not a few believe that the president can’t but look the way of such a man as he seeks a team to join him guide the nation into the next level. Ambode has proved in Lagos that he is for a legacy-pursuing agenda, a mission he pursued stoically and pragmatically to the end, even when unconscionably denied a conventional privilege to automatically seek a second term without a challenge within the party.

  • CDHR urges Ambode to decongest prisons

The Lagos State chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has urged Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to decongest prisons before he leaves office on May 29.

Speaking yesterday during a peaceful march to the Alausa seat of the government, as part of the activities to mark the 30th anniversary of the group, the Chairman, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, said a visit to Ikoyi and Kirikiri Maximum/Medium Prisons during the week showed that they were congested.

He advised the government to intervene.

He said most of the inmates were those who committed minor offences and whose cases were being delayed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who he said, had little time to go through the files.

Omotehinse condemned the spate of extrajudicial killings by the police, citing the killing of Kolade Johnson by the police at Onipetesi, Ikeja on Sunday.

“Today is the Day 5 of our 30th anniversary. CDHR was formed in 1989 when a unionist, now a lawyer, Mr. Femi Aborishade, was detained under Decree 2 by the then government of Ibrahim Babangida.

“We have visited the prisons and we saw the deplorable conditions under which the inmates are being kept.

“Part of our discovery is that one of the prisons had 3000 inmates over its capacity. Many of the inmates are victims of circumstances.

“We are challenging the police to respect human dignity. We want them to respect human rights. If they want to take people to court, they should do so.

“For instance, they take someone that commits capital offence to a magistrates’ court that does not have jurisdiction and then the file will be taken to the DPP that will not attend to it for eight or even nine months.

“We are not encouraging building of more prisons. We want the government to decongest the prisons in Badagry, Kirikiri, Ikoyi and others.

“We have a lot of cases pending there. A file that is not up to 30 pages will be pending with the DPP for months,” he said.

On extrajudicial killings, Omotehinse said this should be condemned by right thinking persons.

He recalled that he led a protest when three people were killed at Makoko last year.

“Police officers who killed people were allowed to go scot-free in the past. But I am impressed that this time, the police commissioner has paid a condolence visit to the bereaved family.

“It is only a court of competent jurisdiction that can sentence people to death.

“Some of the people in the prisons were made to sign their statements under duress.

“We appeal to Governor Ambode to decongest the prisons. The Attorney-General should also be up and doing,” Omotehinse said.

The activists were later addressed by the Special Adviser to the Governor (SSA) on Civic Engagement, Taiwo Aiyedun, who hailed them for their courage and for fighting for the common man. “The government identifies with your agitations,” he said.

Omotehinse presented a letter and a gift to Aiyedun for transmission to the governor, who he praised for his developmental projects across the state.

  • Ambode, Obasa, Fasanmi, others hail Tinubu at 67

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, his Ekiti State counterpart, Kayode Fayemi, Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, the National Leader of Egbe Afenifere, Pa Ayo Fasanmi, and many others yesterday congratulated ex-Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on his birthday.

    Tinubu turns 67 today.

Ambode saluted the role played by the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, saying Nigeria was already on threshold of greatness with the duo in the next level government.

Ambode, who spoke at the 11th Bola Tinubu Colloquium held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja as part of activities marking the 67th birthday of Tinubu, said it was gratifying to note that the next level promised by the APC government was already unfolding, adding that the next four years would engender massive development and service to the people.

He said: “We are all expectant and we can feel the next level unfolding. Our country is on the threshold of greatness because for the first time since our independence, we would have successive administrations of a progressive and visionary government; a government of integrity, a government whose sole interest is the well-being of Nigeria and Nigerians.

“We are lucky to be here in this exciting time; in a time when our country will be led by selfless individuals who have the progress and prosperity of our people as their major objective and we are here today because Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been a very key part of this story.

“We are here not only to celebrate him (Tinubu) but to celebrate the incoming dawn in Nigeria; we are here to celebrate the next level in Nigeria where Nigerians will be served and given what is due to them.”

The governor, who attended the colloquium with his wife, Bolanle, hailed Tinubu for his political dexterity, doggedness, undoubted courage and political acumen, saying the attributes of the national leader played key part in the electoral victory of APC at the Federal, National Assembly, Governorship and State Assembly elections.

While describing the theme of the colloquium: “Next Level: Work For People,” as perfectly conceived and apt for the moment, Governor Ambode said it was instructive that it was coming at a time when Nigerians were eagerly looking forward to revolutionary transformation in key sectors and sections of the country.

“This colloquium is coming at a time when the APC has spread its political tentacles even further in the country and this colloquium is coming at a time when Nigerians are eagerly looking forward to the next level in progressive politics, economic growth, social welfare and increased national security,” the governor said.

Fayemi, in a tribute to Tinubu, described him as the leading light of progressive politics in the country, a fact which he said critics of the APC leader usually acknowledge.

He recalled his working relationship with the former NADECO chieftain and said Tinubu remained a dependable, reliable and passionate leader, whose record of grooming successful disciples is unmatchable.

Fayemi said: “I celebrate you today as always because you have been a reliable, dependable and passionate leader. The hallmark of a great leader is not measured in castles and materials, but in his ability to groom and lead successful disciples.

“Like a colossus in the jungle of life, your ability to identify, nurture and engage talents is unequalled. Your life has been a testimony of human capital development in an unrelenting struggle for a better life. Even your political detractors secretly admire your courage, vibrancy, intelligence, ebullience, kind-heartedness, warmth and sagacity.

“I will forever cherish the memory of our struggles for the enthronement and sustenance of democracy and good governance in Nigeria. Your infectious smile, as we have witnessed together on a number of occasions, is disarming. You have, over the years, succeeded in constantly reinventing yourself as a leading light of progressive politics.

“You mean different things to different people. To some, you are a patriotic politician, while to others, you are a political strategist who loves challenging the powers-that-be as a result of your passion and desire to see that your people are not deprived of their rights at any time.

“You might not be the darling of all, but you have carved a niche for yourself in the political history of Nigeria. May providence reward your labour of love with long life in good health, unspeakable joy and everlasting bliss.

“On behalf of the government and good people of Ekiti State, I wish you the best of what your new year can offer. Above all, I wish you many more useful and productive years,” he added.

Obasa described Tinubu as the greatest politician of the present generation. The speaker, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Musbau Rasak, yesterday said:  “Asiwaju is the greatest politician of this generation. His leadership qualities and ability to discover and nurture talents for the greater good of the public is uncommon and unrivaled among his peers.

“But for the special discovery talent of Asiwaju, great administrators like the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; former Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; former Lagos Governor, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN; Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; Governor Akinwunmi Ambode; Messrs Wale Edun, Yemi Cardozo and Dele Alake among others would not have had the opportunity to show Nigerians and the world at large, the stuff they are made of.”

Obasa also praised the pioneering efforts of Asiwaju Tinubu for the creation of modern Lagos which has become the role model for others to emulate in the country.

“He’s the architect of modern Lagos, laying the solid foundation on which successful governments continue to build on making the state the best among its peers in the country and the continent,” he said.

The Lagos Assembly Speaker stated further that the APC National Leader deserves all the accolades, best wishes and praises showered on him because he has always stand for good governance anchored equity and fairness nurtured by justice and strict adherence to the Rule of Law.

“On behalf of my colleagues at the Lagos State House of Assembly, I rejoice with our Leader, the great Jagaban of Africa on this glorious birthday celebration. I wish you many happy returns sir,” Obasa said.

Fasanmi, in a statement by his media aide, Mr. Adebayo Temitope, said: “No matter what you may say about Bola either you like him or not, there is no way you can discuss the democracy that is being enjoyed by many people today without mention Bola.”

He added: “During the NADCO era, he played a vital role which is still fresh in everybody memory. Asiwaju Bola has fought a good fight for the sustenance of democracy and he has won. If not because of Asiwaju’s struggle, some have determined to turn this country to their private business. Bola, what you are celebrating is the reality of unprecedented, steady and consistent progress in the entire nation, even the foundation which you laid as the former governor of Lagos State during the AD still continues. As you are celebrating your birthday Bola, I can say you have come, you have seen and by the grace of God you shall conquer. Wishing you a many more good years. I pray you shall celebrate 93 like me.”

Osun APC also congratulated Tinubu. The party said: “What makes this moment worthy of celebration is the quality of the series of achievements that the Jagaban of Borgu has made in less than four decades, from a local hero to a huge national figure.”

In a message of goodwill signed by the chairman of the ruling party, Prince Gboyega Famodun, the APC added: “One of Asiwaju Tinubu’s greatest achievements is his contribution to the political engineering that brought the APC into being and led it to a historic victory in 2015.

“And as if that was not historic enough, the Asiwaju led the new party to a second term victory in the just concluded elections.

“These events were first of its kind in the history of Nigerian politics, and one that will occupy a special attention of historians,” the party said.

He praised Tinubu for what he described as the  “unique generosity of the APC leader”, which has changed the lives of “hundreds of thousands of people”.

He went on: “These people (that spread across party lines and nationalities) will never forget Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a hurry.

“They will be amongst the millions of Nigerians who will be praying today to Allah that He grants the APC leader long life and prosperity for the good of Nigeria.”

A socio-political group, Akwa Ibom Visionaries’ Choice for a Better Tomorrow Initiative (AKV), has described former Lagos State governor as ‘an apostle of one Nigeria’.

The group said Tinubu has salvaged the country’s democracy through his brand of politics. Its National President, Emmanuel Effiong, said: ”Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is an Apostle of one Nigeria and a dogged fighter for the sustenance of unity and democracy in Nigeria.”

Effiong said the group has been closely following the political contributions of the APC leader, adding that the posterity will not forgive the present crop Nigerians if they failed to identify with the lofty ideals and inputs of the former Lagos state governor to the country.

Effiong eulogised Tinubu for his outstanding achievements, noting that the APC leader is an ”American-trained accountant of no mean repute, a party planter for the sustenance of Democracy and a political activist who struggled for the emancipation of Nigerians”.

He urged all Akwa Ibom people to identify with and celebrate Tinubu as a stateman on the occasion of his birthday anniversary.

  • Striking NASUP workers shut LASPOTECH gate

Members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), locked the gates of the institution’s main campus in Ikorodu on Wednesday over non-payment of their March salary.

The union has been on strike since January over their demand for the Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure (CONTISS) 15 migration which would see workers moving from one salary grade level to the other.

There has been disagreement between the union and the institution’s Governing Council over the implementation of the CONTISS 15 since 2016.

However, things took an alarming turn on Wednesday when members of the union locked the entrance gate to the school and sent those found on campus away.  The Union members also went to the LASPOTECH staff school and sent the pupils and teachers home.

The Nation gathered that the workers who had been receiving salary since the strike began in January, were shocked when they were not paid for March.

A member of staff who refused the give her name after finding her way to get into the premises, told The Nation that representatives of the Union held a meeting with the Lagos State Head of Service, Hakeem Muri Okunola on Tuesday but “I don’t know the outcome of the meeting,” she said.

It was learnt the Rector, Mr Samuel Sogunro, left the campus for Alausa to discuss the crisis with Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

When contacted, the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Mr Olanrewaju Kuye, said the salaries had not been paid because those responsible for its preparation were not allowed to work.

“We are on strike.  We cannot go to our offices so how can we work? How can salaries be paid?  We only go round our offices but cannot enter.  That is why the salaries have not been paid,” he said.

Around 4pm, Policemen arrived and ordered the workers to re-open the gate.  They remained on campus patrolling the area as at press time.

  • Lagos commissions new Ilaje-Bariga Jetty

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) on Monday opened the Ilaje-Bariga Jetty as part of its commitment to improve waterways transportation.

Lagos State has 3000 kilometres of waterways with water transportation accounting for just 74,000 travel count, which is just 0.34 percent of the daily passenger traffic put by the Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (LAMATA) at 22 million.

LASWA said the berthing of the new jetty would redefine travel pattern around the axis, calling on residents at Surulere, Bariga, Yaba, and environs to patronize the new jetty.

LASWA General Manager, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, who spoke Tuesday, said the world class jetty is another landmark in the list of jetties delivered by the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode government to reposition water transportation in the state.

With the Ilaje-Bariga jetty, Emmanuel said, Lagos State has 23 modern jetties and four terminals.

He said more jetties would be provided as more routes are channeled and made navigable for waterways transportation.

According to Emmanuel, the new Ilaje-Bariga Jetty is delivered, with among other facilities, a 200 cars park and ride facility, eatery park, toilet facilities, comfortable seating arrangements, a ticketing mall, ATM gallery and other conveniences that would take water transportation to a new level.

He said though activity is still low on the route being a new route, LASWA and the government has no doubt that facilities at the new jetty would stimulate more patronage of the water transportation.

The LASWA chief said from the jetty, passenger can get ferries going to Apapa, CMS, Ebute Ero, Victoria Island and Falomo.

He added that in a record of 10 to 20 minutes passengers can move from Bariga to any part of the Island or Apapa, adding that with such speed, water transportation offers a new travel experience for Lagosians who crave for a better way to beat the perennial gridlocks on the roads.

While admitting Lagosians’ phobia for water, Emmanuel said the government would continue its aggressive campaign for strict adherence to safety regulations by all water craft operators in order to make the waterways safe.
