    • Says Crime Rate Reduced by 65 Percent
    • Commences Construction of Ajah, Abule Egba, Berger Flyovers

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday reaffirmed his commitment to remain resolute to serve and justify the trust reposed in him.

The Governor also assured that he would continue to work tirelessly to deliver good governance for the collective good of all Lagosians.

The Governor, who spoke while rendering his account of stewardship at the Second Quarterly Town Hall Meeting held at the City Hall, Lagos, said his administration will continue to stay true to its overall policy built on a tripod of security, infrastructural development and job creation.

Addressing a large gathering of party chieftains, market men and women, captains of industry, members of the diplomatic corps as well as top government functionaries, Governor Ambode said his administration is fully aware that a safer Lagos will attract more investments from local and foreign investors, hence he kept to his promise in the first quarter to improve on the security in the state with investment in security equipment worth over N4.7billion.

The Governor reported that the investment in the security equipment has led to the reduction of crime rate in the state by 65 percent in the last quarter of 2015.

“I am happy to report that our State is a lot safer today as statistics show that crime rate reduced by 65% during the last quarter compared to Year 2014,” he said.

Governor Ambode said his administration, in another spirited effort to tackle crime, invested towards the “Light Up Lagos” project, which has since restored light on major highways and inner roads in the state at night.

He said an Advisory Committee on Power, chaired by the Deputy Governor was also set up to keep faith with the promise to ensure that every nook and cranny of the state is lit-up, just as he urged residents to key into the project in return for a reward.

“In the past few months, we have fixed street lights from Berger in Ojodu to Lekki, Ikorodu to Lagos Island, the entire Ikeja axis, Victoria Island and Ikoyi. We are taking this project to every part of the State. If we are not yet in your neighbourhood, give us a little time; we will soon be there. As we light up the State, we expect crime to reduce as criminals will have nowhere to hide and operate.

“I call on individuals and corporate bodies to join our “Light Up Lagos” project by adopting a street and lighting it up either by connecting it to your meter or your generator. In return, these individuals and institutions will receive special concessions on Land Use Charge and commendation from the State and Local Governments”.

The Governor also said in the last quarter, 49 transformers were donated to communities that were hitherto in darkness for five years, while electricity has now been restored to 63 Communities starting from Eleko to Ode-Omi in Ibeju Lekki Local Government.

“We also commissioned the 33kva Electrical Sub-Station in Gberigbe Community, Ikorodu. This is expected to improve the electricity situation in that axis,” he said.

On infrastructural development, Governor Ambode said that over 300 roads were rehabilitated during the period under review, adding that 66 major road projects are at various stages of completion while 80 road grading and surface dressing projects will soon be completed in all the LGs & LCDAs of the State.

He listed some of the completed roads to include Afa Nla Road, Agege, CIPM Road, Alausa, Ijegun-Ikotun Road, Mba Street, Ajegunle, 1st and 2nd Avenue, Festac Town, Afolabi Ege Street, Ojo, Thomson Road, Ikoyi, 2nd Avenue, Ikoyi, Queens Drive, Ikoyi, Ebutte Ero Road, Lagos Island and Akin Adeshola Road, Victoria Island.

“In addition to this, the construction of two roads in each of the 20 Local Government and 37 Local Government Development Areas in the State was flagged off last week.  A total of 114 roads will be delivered through this intervention in the next six months at a cost of N17.5b,” The Governor said.

Governor Ambode also listed other strides of his administration in the last quarter including the injection of 434 new BRT buses, the commencement of construction of fly-overs in Ajah roundabout, Abule – Egba Junction and Berger Bus stop as well as the resumption of work on the Blue Line Rail Project expected to be completed by December 2016.

He also said that the state government has embarked on the rehabilitation of schools, construction of new classroom blocks and provision of furniture to the tune of N2.5b, jointly funded with the Federal Government under the UBEC scheme with the State adding an additional N526m.

On the projection for the first quarter of 2016, he assured that with the budget already in place his administration will kick-start the N25billion Employment Trust Fund, employ new staff into LASTMA, Fire Service and Hospitals, strengthen the state security infrastructure as well as take the Light Up Lagos Project to more areas.

He said, “As your Governor, I am resolute in my commitment to you; to serve and justify the trust you have reposed in me and work tirelessly to deliver good governance for the collective good of all Lagosians.

“All we need is your support and cooperation. We thank you for your direct feedback to us. We take them on board but we also need you to always fulfill your side of the social contract by ensuring regular payment of your taxes and willful compliance with the State Laws.

“There are better days ahead. Together, we are building a Lagos that we are all proud of”.

  • The Ambodian cross

    The Ambodian cross

The winding politics of Lagos makes the Governor of the state vulnerable. The hysterical character of its assorted population humanity exposes the Governor of the state to many dilemmas. The under-pinning conspiracy of its elite is heavier than the LAMB’s cross at the Calvary. To rule Lagos is prestigious but to govern Lagos is egregious. The incumbent Governor of the state, Akinwunmi Ambode must have realized this. How? During the state’s thanksgiving service to mark the commencement of the year 2016 for Lagos workers in particular, and Lagosians in general, he sang one of his favorite gospel songs “I have a FATHER that will never, never fail me…”

Aside from celebrating  and promoting spiritual politics with his public declaration of a “FATHER that will never, never, fail him”, he was acknowledging the fact that no matter how big and heavy his cross is, he has a GOD who is a Burden Bearer, that will help him to carry it.

For the governor of a state with complex humanity and strange particularities, that song was apt. For the governor of a state that is regularly wrestling with political principalities who hover around the men of power and those in power, the Governor’s invocation of Divine assistance for his government was perfect. For a man who ascribed his ascendancy to the gubernatorial throne to his Big FATHER in heaven, such open solicitation to heavenly Divinities and the hosts of Heaven was a salutary decision he could have taken to overcome these  political principalities. But is it not ironic that men in power also call on the highest power to overcome the other powers?

Theatrically, I am packaging in my political narrative the spleen in the temple of power that is almost threatening the authority of the Apostle. We all thought the temple was strong. We all felt the foundation of the temple and the Solomonic grace behind it will fortify it against aggression. But when the Barnabas crowd, led by an apostolic renegade, invaded the temple, nobody even expected that the kingdom would be configured to the North and South. It is now a case of one temple, two priests.

I admire the Governor. He is a very good friend; a young man with an elder’s status. His maturity has grown. His wisdom has increased. His judgment is rich. His grace is palpable. His intentions are noble. His perception is too good. But he cannot escape carrying the cross. He possesses the spiritual anointing for such a sacrificial assignment. He obtained the constitutional mandate for this selfless sacrifice. It is his cross. He must carry it. Fortunately, he has approached the ONE who says in the HOLY BOOK: “come unto me all ye that are heavy laden and I will give you rest”

Before narrating the details of the apostolic apothegm, let us discuss the character of the people around the temple and see if by providence, the temple is a good metaphor for the cross. In Lagos state, politicians’ desperation for survival has raised their instincts for machinations against their rivals. Any governor who discountenances the antics of the conspirators needs training in survivalism. I am amazed that in less than one year, Ambode, perceived by politicians as “an ordinary civil servant”, is now a grandmaster in the art of survivalist politics. Not only has he stabilized himself in power, he has created for himself an ambience of peace by evicting from the corridors of power, those who treated him with contempt on the road to vestry of power.

In no time, the temple is going desolate because of the diminishing power of the overseer. At the same time, two sanctuaries are swelling because of the growing power of their priests. The apostolic renegade also performs priestly functions. Now, he has a massive temple with enough space for ancient worshippers and migrating grasshoppers. Politicians are irritants. They build temples ; they destroy temples. Politicians are worshippers of lucre and Lucifer. In your presence, they hail you. At your back, they nail you. What kind of temple is this that accommodates the sacred and the profane! Enough of political ministration. Let’s go back to the governor.

Oh my friend, I salute your courage. It must have been nothing but passion for service that pushed a man to offer himself as the leader of a people who are loath to gratitude. Leaders’ journey to Calvary always begins from “commuters mutiny” or “passengers persecution”. Commercial vehicles- BRT, Danfo, trains, okada, ferry and keke marwa- are convenient refuge for angry and insolent citizens to indulge in treasonable blasphemy, felonious mutiny, destructive falsehood and exaggerated misinformation against their leaders. Once citizens are inside commercial vehicles, they behave like people who are possessed by demons and spirit of garrulity. And their major targets are their rulers on whom they heap their personal and domestic misfortunes and tragedies. As far as they are concerned, their leaders should act like Simon, the Cyrenian, who was forced to carry JESUS’ cross to the Calvary. But I ask; if a leader is to help every citizen to carry their cross to the Calvary, when will they have time to carry their own from the gallery? Or is there any man on this earth that does not have a cross to carry?

Must citizens’ immunity to abuse, insult and assault their leaders not be exercised with discretion? I agree that the situations in the country are grave. I agree that citizens’ conditions are horrible. I agree that leadership in Nigeria is on the low. But if we make persecution of leaders a tradition or a hobby, a time will come that those who offer themselves for service will be people who are indebted to credibility. This habit of persecuting our leaders in commercial vehicles is gradually spreading to innocent children who are convoyed to school every morning in their school buses. The things some of our children say or learn about their leaders could only have been picked from gossips and banters that fly around when they are in their school buses. When toddlers and kids begin to gossip about their leaders in their school bus at this stage when they cannot even appreciate the dynamics of governance nor understand the complexity and challenge of leadership, obviously, the future is in serious peril.

Back to the Ambodian cross; as the governor of the most populous and complicated state, Ambode’s cross is bigger, heavier and mightier than any other person’s. In less than one year, the governor has shown that he understands the science of politics and the grandeur of power. In the areas of infrastructure and service delivery, Ambode has swiftly compensated the state for the deficit of the past. While other states’ workers are lamenting the instalmental payment of their salaries and even the irregularity of the payment, Lagos workers are begging for salary delay. For instance, their December salary was paid as early as December 15. Most of the workers felt that the gap between their December salary and January salary was too long for comfort. While workers of other states are hawking landed properties and domestic appliances to pay their children’s school fees, Lagos workers will be using their salary for similar purpose. While workers of other states went to church for special prayers during the new Year so that their hanging salaries could be paid, Lagos workers and lagosians generally were dancing  “Shakiti Bobo” by Olamide, “Dorobucci” by Marvin Crew and “Jagaban” by Ycee in what was tagged “One Lagos Fiesta”.

But this is not the parable of the cross. It is about a temple that is no longer standing tall. The temple is deserted. The Apostle is looking for his congregation. But they have all gone into hibernation. No more regular burnt offerings. No more special anointing. The little anointing is drying up. The governor is a wise man. Only wise men wine and dine with GOD. But the wisdom to manage a crumbling temple invaded by men of ambition under the supervision of the Apostolic renegade, would require extra spiritual energy. Oh my GOD, I love the governor. His response to emergency is unbelievable. The renegade’s action has created an emergency. But unlike other emergencies of life and death which the Governor has helped to resolve for some of his citizens publicly and privately, this particular emergency is a cross that he must carry, not to Calvary this time, but to the crossroads to appease  the humans and the spirits responsible for the diminishing  influence of the den of power.

This, indeed, is the real Ambodian Cross!

Lagos begins construction of 114 inner roads

Lagos State Government has concluded plans to commence the construction of 114 inner roads, estimated at a cost of N17.5billion across the 20 Local Governments (LGs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state.

Chairman of Conference of Executive Secretaries (ES) Mr. Kolade Alabi,  disclosed this Tuesday while addressing journalist at a joint press conference with commissioners of Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde and Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs,  Mr. Muslim  Folami Coker.

Alabi explained that the development was in fulfillment of the promise by the State Governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, to improve on the access and inner roads in the local government and LCDAs.

He said the project would be executed to standard requirement with street lights, sidewalks and covered drains adding that it would be completed within the next six months.

According to him, “During the electioneering campaign the governor promised to improve on the access and inner roads in the LGs/LCDAs, hence his decision to pay more attention to Local government efforts at providing world class roads”.

He said the Executive Secretaries submitted names of two roads within their local government in an open competitive bidding, adding that the contractors have been mobilised to commence work immediately.

“In executing this project, a unique model of bottom up infrastructural development style and inclusive governance, which involve the CDAs and other relevant stakeholders in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of this project has been put in place through constructive engagement and stakeholders’ workshop.”

Alabi listed some of the roads to benefit in this first phase, as Mathew  and  Famuyiwa Olayiwola street in Agege Local Govt; Orile Agege, Ogundele and Fashola street; Alimosho, Jolaosho and Alhaji Idowu street; Amuwo Odofin, Adebola Olojobi and Eko Akete; Ikorodu, Bolaji Benson and Adeniji Kemi street, among others.

He said the full list of the 114 roads can be found on the state’s website.

He also expressed optimism that the roads when completed would have a lot of social economic benefits on the lives of the residents.

Earlier, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, who gave a background to the project, said the mission for the actualization of the project started in October 2015 when Governor Akinwumi Ambode met with the Executive Secretaries of all the 57 Councils in the State, and agreed with them on the need to massively embark on rehabilitation and construction of inner roads across the State.

He said the project was designed to complement the massive road construction and rehabilitation going on in the State which culminated in the repair of 300 roads in just seven months, adding that same was in sync with the determination of the current administration to make Lagos work for all.

•Ambode: hijab not banned in Lagos

The Army on Sunday dissociated itself from the action of its men who allegedly removed the veil of a muslim woman in Lagos last Friday.

The incident has sparked protests from the Muslim community, which is calling on the Presidency to make its stand known on the use of hijab.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode condemned the soldiers’ action, saying hijab is not banned in Lagos State.

Army’s 81 Division 1 Public Relations Officer Col James Samuel said the military did not direct soldiers to harrass women in hijab.

The army, Samuel said, was unaware of the incident.

Two soldiers last Friday in Meiran, Ojokoro Local Council Development Area of Lagos removed the woman’s veil, claiming that its use had been banned.

Islamic organisations and clerics took to social media to condemn the action.

According to an eyewitness, Adetutu Oluwa, the soldiers allegedly alighted from their vehicle on sighting a woman dressed in veil and started harassing her.

One of them, she claimed, forcefully removed the veil, popularly referred to as Niqab, from the woman’s head and warned her never to use it in public again.

“After removing the veil, one of the soldiers said: ‘This thing is not allowed in our country again. You can use it in your house.’  They both walked back to their vehicle with the veil,” Oluwa alleged.

According to her, it took the intervention of passersby and sympathisers for the woman to get her veil back.

“On sensing cold reaction from the people, the soldiers dropped the veil on the floor, entered their vehicle and zoomed off,” she said.

Oluwa in a programme monitored on Star 101.5 FM on Saturday said: “I was traumatised by the situation even though I wasn’t the one harassed.”

According to islamic organisations and scholars, the President’s statement on the possibility of banning hijab because many Boko Haram suicide bombers hide under it to wreak havoc, is being used as excuse to harass Islamic women nationwide.

“Everything must be done to balance national security requirements with religious rights and obligations of citizens protected as enshrined in the constitution,” said Mallam Saheed Ashafa, Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit president.

A lawyer, Mutiat Orolu-Balogun, described the soldiers’ action as callous, saying: “It is easy to point fingers if you are not sacrificing or not being inconvenienced. Some sections are easy to clamour for the ban on hijab because they are not using it or they are looking for an excuse not to or they want everyone to be naked like them. Whichever is their wish or thought as the case may be, they need fresh orientation.”

Lagos State University (LASU) lecturer Mrs Ganiya Adenle said: “When there is a fire, I don’t see fire fighters killing the smoke, they rather go to the base of the fire. The government should go to the root of Boko Haram, find out those behind it and stop killing the smoke of Boko Haram.”

Dousing tension, Governor Ambode said hijab has not been banned in Lagos State.

He spoke on Saturday during the inauguration of The Muslim Congress (TMC) Imams at TMC Dawah Centre in Ijeshatedo.

Ambode said the government has not directed security operatives to go on such mission.

The governor said: “I want to assure you that government does not know anything about what happened on Friday at Meiran. Lagos State has not banned hijab. The Federal government has not banned hijab and we are warning all security operatives to desist from all acts that can lead to religious tension.”

Ambode appealed to the crowd to remain law-abiding and not to take the laws into its hands, promising to look into the case.

“Nobody is above the law. Muslims should be free to practise their religion. Christians should feel free to practise their religion,” he said.

Ambode, represented by Home Affairs Commissioner Dr Abdul Abdul Hakeem AbdulLateef, thanked the congress for its support during the last elections.

“Personally, I don’t think that banning hijab is the solution to the menace of terrorism,” AbdulLateef said, adding: “Ever since journalism has been practised as a profession, there are journalists who have come out with articles and information capable of creating tension and derailing the government. No government has because of that banned journalism.

“We cannot because of the excesses of some people begin to trample on the fundamental human rights of others.

“It is good that all religious organisations are taking it on board. They are now using metal detectors to ensure nobody comes in with bomb. This is the message that all churches and mosques are taking on board.”

The governor noted that religious leaders are critical stakeholders in the development of the state and the country.

“We’ll not because of what is happening now violate our own constitution. We recognise the fact that section 38 of the constitution allows the freedom of religion either as individuals on in community with others to observe and propagate their religion. We will never allow any security officials to take the law into its hands.  This is our electoral promise to Lagosians,” Ambode said.

  • Ambode signs N662.588bn 2016 Budget to Law

Ambode signs N662.588bn 2016 Budget to Law

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode Monday signed the N662.588bn year 2016 Appropriation Law with a promise that the budget would be faithfully implemented in line with the determination of his administration to make Lagos work for all irrespective of age, gender, tribe or status.
The Appropriation Bill, presented to the Lagos State House of Assembly by Governor Ambode on December 17, was unanimously passed into law by members of the House on December 31, 2015.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Ambode said the 2016 budget was the article of faith of his administration with Lagosians and it was in line with delivering on the promises made to the people.

He said: “The 2016 budget of N662.588bn will enable our government focus on the present challenges of security, traffic gridlock resolution including physical and social infrastructural developments which have thrown up new challenges quite different from our past experience.”

The Governor thanked the House of Assembly for speedily ensuring the passage of the bill, saying it was no mean feat considering the long hours spent and meticulous scrutiny provided by the House Committee on Appropriation.

While recognizing the expeditious attention given to the passage of the Bill into Law by members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Governor Ambode said the lawmakers deserved to be commended considering the long hours spent and meticulous scrutiny they provided on the budget.

Governor Ambode said he was not oblivious of the current challenges brought about by the dwindling federal allocations due to falling crude oil prices, but that the budget would be driven by Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

He, however, appealed to all Tax Payers to fulfill their civic obligations by promptly paying their taxes, just as he assured that his administration would leave no stone unturned in delivering value for every Kobo spent.

“In conclusion, I will commend this Budget to all Lagosians and enjoin them to continue collaborating with us in building the Lagos of our dreams,” Governor Ambode said.

Giving a breakdown of the 2016 budget, tagged “The Peoples Budget”, the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Akinyemi Ashade said it will go a long way to promote massive investments in Security, Transport/Traffic management, Physical and Social Infrastructural development in addition to enhancing job creation/opportunities.

He said the 2016 budget with estimated total revenue of N542.873bn with the balance of N119.714bn expected to be funded through a combination of internal and external loans included World Bank DPO 3 loan which could not be accessed in 2015.

He said the Lagos Internal Revenue Service is expected to generate N300billion equivalent to 78 percent of the total IGR, however adding that while the state government does not intend to introduce new taxes, efforts will be made towards bringing more citizens into the tax.

Giving a breakdown of the expenditure plan, Ashade said N89billion will be spent on construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of roads and public buildings, while N48.9billion will be expended on various Transportation initiatives including the completion of the Blue Rail Line and expansion of BRT Corridors (Mile 12-Ojota).

The Commissioner also said that N86billion will be spent on the education sector, which according to him, will cover the state government flagship programmes including A-Meal-a-Day initiative to be partly sponsored by the Federal Government, Ibile tablets for Secondary Schools as well as the development of the E-Curriculum initiative.

He gave the expenditure breakdown of other sectors to include, Health (N46.9bn) Agriculture and Food Security (N2bn), Tourism (N2.2bn), Commerce and Industry (N6.2bn), Environment (N27bn), Pensions (N6.5bn), Science and Technology (N9.6bn), Water (N17.6bn), Housing (N25.3bn), Sports Development (N2.3billion), among others.

  • Don’t bribe God

    Don’t bribe God

The story had it that Attahiru Bafarawa clucked with N4.6 billion for spiritual purposes. Quite a hefty sum for God, I thought. But it may have made sense if Jonathan won the election. Bafawara could have aped his Christian friends and yelled, To Allah be the glory. But the electoral loss means we could have spent the money well.

Look, for instance, at Lagos. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode spent N4.7 billion to protect 16 million Nigerians. He invested it in a series of helicopters, gunboats, fleet of cars and motorbikes as well as communication gadgets. We are feeling the impact in Lagos now. The devout will say Ambode spent his money on mammon while Bafarawa and Jonathan spent on God.

Mammon seems well now that their project has failed with Jonathan’s loss. The 16 million Lagosians will appreciate the money more than marabouts and other places where the money might have gone. Lesson: don’t’ bribe God. When the people rejoice, N4.6 billion as offering meets brick wall of heaven.

    Lagos inaugurates security equipment

The Lagos State government will today inaugurate some security equipment to rebrand and reposition its Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, three helicopters, patrol vehicles, power bikes and other security gadgets acquired by the Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration will be inaugurated.

The equipment to be handed over include three helicopters, two patrol boats, 100 motorcycles, 13 BM power bikes, 60 Ford salon cars, 55 Ford Rangers, 40 Toyota salon cars, 10 Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs, 31 Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) as well as police uniforms and other kits.

Ayorinde says today’s ceremony will underscore the government’s seriousness in ensuring the security of lives and property.

“With these security equipment, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has demonstrated his firm commitment and ability to safeguard the lives and property of every Lagosian.

“The government is convinced this gesture will further boost the morale and capacity of the police, RRS and other security agencies . It is an attestation to the efficacy of the state’s Security Trust Fund and we believe that this will send a clear signal that criminals and robbers no longer have a hiding place in the state.

“It is noteworthy that the government has stepped up its enforcement of traffic laws and declared zero tolerance on pot holes, a decision that has brought to 282 the number of roads so far rehabilitated in the past five months.

Ambode promises to uphold tenets of good governance

Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday said that his government would uphold the tenets of good governance to deepen democratic culture in the country.

Ambode said this in a keynote address at the 2015 edition of Alumni Lecture and Award series of the Herbert Humphrey Alumni Association of Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ‘Deepening Democratic Culture in Nigeria’ was theme of the programme.

The governor, who is also a Humphrey Fellow, urged members to be bridge builders.

He implored them to invest in social capital and leadership training to push for positive change.

Ambode said that his training as a Humphrey Fellow had helped in the running of a cosmopolitan state like Lagos.

According to him, the training has also helped his government in laying emphasis on government of inclusion, by creating the Office of Civil Engagement as well as Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment.

“Lagos must work for everybody and we must create institutional framework that will enable the residents get to the leadership.

“This is a government of inclusion and everybody must have a voice,” he said.

Earlier, the President, Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Alumni Association, Nigeria, Mr Jude Ememe, said that this year’s edition marked the 75th anniversary of Educational Exchanges between the United States and rest of the world.

According to him, the programme, which is in honour of former United States Senator and Vice President, Herbert Humphrey, is aimed at building career professionals and bringing together stakeholders to examine topical issues.
