  • ‘Ambode has what it takes’

A group, Lagos Heritage Front, has condemned the statement by former Minister of Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, that the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode, does not have the requisite experience to govern Lagos.

Their spokesperson, Yusuf Akinlaja, described the former minister as a man who lacks principle and should be ignored.

He said: “It is surprising that a man like Obanikoro whose tenure as the commissioner of Home Affairs was without candour and any major impact to the people of Lagos.

“A man who was the chairman of Lagos Island Local Government under whose watch the City Hall went up in flames. His only achievement as minister was the massive deployment of soldiers to harass civilians during elections.

“The question is if Obanikoro has the opportunity to govern Lagos, what experience would he use that can be compared to that of Ambode, who has over 27 years experience as a career civil servant?

“Lagosians must vote for integrity and competence, we cannot be cajoled by sweet talks and verbosity. Talk is cheap but it takes grit to deliver result.”

    Lagosians urged to collect PVCs

A group, Akinwunmi Ambode Kommittee of Friends (AA’KOF), has urged Lagosians to use the extension of the deadline for the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to obtain theirs.
It said although it was obvious that the majority of Lagos residents supported the All Progressives Congress’ (APC’s) candidates, “they cannot actualise their support without having PVCs.”
AA’KOF said if Lagosians wanted the APC governorship candidate, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and the legislative candidates to win the elections, they should collect their PVCs.
The body’s spokesman, Elder Cornelius Olopade, who spoke yesterday at the APC rally in Ojo, Lagos, said: “We were at the APC presidential rally last Friday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. No doubt, Lagosians gave the party massive support.
“If what we saw last weekend is to be used to predict the outcome of the elections, APC will win by a landslide. But to realise this, eligible voters need to get their PVCs so that they will not be disenfranchised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)”.
Ambode told the residents of Ojo and its environs that if they vote for him and other APC candidates, they are assured of the good things of life, such as good roads, potable water, decent houses, security, education, health care services and others.
INEC has extended the collection of PVCs from January 31 to February 8.

    ’INEC should permit temporary cards’

Akinwunmi Ambode Kommittee of Friends (AA’KOF) has urged Nigerians to eschew violence before, during and after the elections.

The group’s Media Director, Cornelius Olopade, who spoke yesterday in Mushin, Lagos at the campaign of the Lagos State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, said “violence does not breed good but evil.”

Said he: “AA’KOF has been educating people to allow peace reign, as the elections approach.”

Ambode enjoined Lagosians to vote for him, his running mate, Dr. Oluranti Idiat Adebule and other APC candidates, to enable them continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy started by the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola.

He said he would discourage youths from involving in violence and crimes by creating jobs.

The party’s candidate for Mushin Constituency 2 in the House of Assembly, Abdulsobur Olayiwola Olawale, advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow the electorate to use temporary voter cards.

Olawale, who spoke at the rally, said if this was done, people who did not have permanent voter cards (PVCs) would not be disenfranchised.

The House of Assembly hopeful, who was the special assistant (SA) to former Lagos State Governor Tinubu on Transportation, said if elected, he would sponsor bills to transform transport and other sectors of the economy.

•APC candidate vows to remove duplicity in taxation

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, has promised the business community and corporate sector a “24-hour economy”, if elected.

In a statement by his Director of Media and Communications, Steve Ayorinde, the APC candidate spoke of his vision for a “clean, secure and more prosperous Lagos”.

The former accountant- general, who is also a Fulbright scholar, spoke to some select business community gurus and entrepreneurs at the Civic Centre at an event tagged: ‘An Evening with Akin Ambode’.

The APC candidate said he was glad for the opportunities to interact and share ideas on how best to develop Lagos.

The University of Lagos alumnus said if given the opportunity to serve, “Lagos will be open for business 24 hours a day and seven days a week making it a true 24/7 economy.

“For a mega city to thrive, we must have a holistic plan to make the city attractive and investment-friendly both domestically and internationally.

“The importance of Lagos and how its resources are managed have national implications either positively or otherwise. Lagos is the most populous city in Nigeria and the seventh fastest growing city in the world.

“We are home to approximately 21 million people, and we are the economic heartbeat of this great nation and indeed West Africa.

“It is in the interest of this country that we all jointly and collectively play our part in ensuring that Lagos remains prosperous.

“I have spent a greater part of my life in government rendering public service and learning the rudiments of good governance. I derive joy in encouraging and seeing young people succeed and actualise their dreams. It inspires me, it energises me, and it gives me hope for the future.”

Ambode said the state’s GDP was estimated to be $91billion, which he added is higher than the GDP of 42 countries in Africa, including Kenya with $66 billion, Ghana with $61.7 billion and Tanzania with $58.44 billion.

“Infact Lagos’ GDP is equivalent to the GDP of 19 African countries added together. I dare say that Lagos’ GDP could double the estimated amount, as these figures do not take into account the informal sector, which is believed to be just as large, if not larger than the formal sector.

“Lagos remains the only state in the country that has remained intact and undivided by any state creation exercise from the original 12 of 1967.

“It has moved downwards from a position of a state that shared 1/12 to a state sharing 1/36 of national revenue with disproportionate increase in population.

“Under my watch, there will be continuity in the provision of adequate security in Lagos State and I want to thank you, the business community, for your contributions towards the Security Trust Fund.”

He added that the discouragement of criminal propensity through the continuous state-wide deployment of CCTV cameras and response teams to tackle criminal activities in the communities would continue in his administration.

On transportation, Ambode said stakeholders must join hands in finding a workable solution to the gridlock and reduce the travel times.

He assured that if elected, he would continue with State Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (LASEEDS), VISION 20:20 and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Ambode said his administration would promote good corporate governance and respect the constitutional rights of citizens.

“We will ensure strict adherence to the rule of law and quick access to courts for dispute resolution and protection of investment rights and obligations on transactions.

“I recognise that tax is a sore issue anywhere in the world from time immemorial.  For SMEs , we would ensure the removal of duplicity in taxation. We shall continue to encourage digitalisation of tax collection.”

Ambode told the people that they would enjoy good life if they voted for him.

He said: “An APC government in Lagos State will ensure that the people enjoy basic amenities, such as good roads, potable water, health facilities, quality education and others.

“If you vote for APC and its candidates, you are assured of the continuity of good governance started by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Babatunde Raji Fashola. Never make the mistake of allowing a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government to take over in Lagos State because it will derail the good governance put in place by APC.”

Ambode decried the reduction in the pump price of petrol by the Federal Government, saying it was belated.

The rally was attended by Governor Fashola, his wife, Abimbola, Speaker of the House of Assembly, Adeyemi  Ikuforiji, state party Chairman, Henry Ajomale, members of AA’KOF, Tunde Ibraimoh, Rotimi Agunsoye, Olopade, members of the Lagos State Executive Council and other APC chieftains.

Lagos civil servants hail APC candidate Ambode

The Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, literarily stood still on Monday as workers trooped out to welcome the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akinwunmi Ambode.

Ambode, who was the special guest at the swearing-in of the executive secretaries of the 20 local governments and the 37 local council development authorities, was “mobbed” by the workers as he attempted to move through the Ministry of Finance, where he held sway for six years as accountant general.

They trooped out in their numbers to welcome him, shouting  “Ambo, Ambo, Ambo the next governor of Lagos.”

They also sang joyously: “Winner Oh Oh Oh, winner, Winner Oh Oh Oh winner, Ambode you don win O winner.

It took Ambode about 90 minutes to get to the Adeyemi Bero Hall, the venue of the ceremony a distance of five minutes. And it took an extraordinary maneuvering of the security agents to ward off the crowd to enable him take his seat at the high table.

The audience also went agog, shouting “Ambo, Ambo the next governor of Lagos”. It took the Master of Ceremonies some time to calm them down before the arrival of Governor Babatunde Fashola.

The governor described Ambode as the financial surgeon needed at this time to take Lagos to the next level. He urged Lagosians to vote for experience rather than experiment; for continuity of excellence rather than for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has proven incompetent and made a disaster of the nation.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has promised to set up an Unemployment Trust Fund to tackle the problem of unemployment among youth in the state if voted into office next year.

Speaking at a Keep Fit 10,000 march organised by several youth groups in the state in support of his ambition, Ambode said the fund would be fashioned like the Lagos State Trust Fund set by the state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, in 2007 to tame the insecurity challenges in the state.

Describing himself as a bridge between the young and older generation and the poor and the rich, Ambode promised that his administration would expand opportunities in the entertainment, tourism and hospitality sectors in order to create more employment opportunities for the youth.

He said: “I know what you (youth) are going through; I’ve lived in Shomolu, Iju, Mushin and understand the state better than someone who has lived his entire life in Victoria Island and Ikoyi. Lagos State must not deviate from the path of excellence laid by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and built upon by Mr. babatunde Fashola. I’m determined to take Lagos State to the next level.”

Other speakers at the occasion including the Lagos State APC Chairman, Chief Henry Ajomale and former Chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Mr. Ayodele Adewale also enjoined the youth to continue to support APC in the state.

Ajomale said the PDP-led federal government has not justified the 15 years it has been in power in Nigeria, adding that with the APC winning the governorship election in the state and at the federal level, the state would witness more rapid development.

On his part, Adewale urged Nigerian youth to take active part in politics, while reminding them the nation’s founding fathers attained prominence in the 20’s and 30’s.

The march, which commenced at Maryland, ended at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota area and involved youth leaders of the APC across the state, students in various tertiary institutions and residents of the state.
