Stay away from Lagos, Akiolu warns vandals, kidnappers

•Ambode: we’ll not tolerate such sacrilege again

•Lagos to confiscate buildings, hotels used for kidnapping

Lagos monarch Oba Riliwanu Aremu Akiolu yesterday warned vandals and kidnappers to stay away from the state, saying that the security apparatus has been fortified to wage war against every form of criminality.

Akiolu spoke when he led members of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs to the Lagos House, Ikeja, on a “Thank you” visit to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

He said: “It is in their (hoodlums) interest to desist and look for other legal ventures to make ends meets. The mere fact that the economy appears not okay does not mean that you resort to criminality. They should stop, not just kidnapping, but any form of criminality. No religion accepts such. Everybody is at alert now, we are on our toes now and with the encouragement given by the Chief of Naval Staff, the National Security Adviser and the Inspector-General of Police, they will be chased to anywhere they are,” he said.

He enjoined members of the council to rise to their responsibilities and take the business of security within their communities seriously.

He said the incident which led to the kidnap of the Oniba of Iba, Oba Goriola Oseni, on July 16, was a wake-up call to all, noting that the business of protecting lives and property should not be left to the security agencies alone.

Akiolu said: “Honestly, as I told my brother Obas, all of us will have to go back and rearrange our security architecture. All hands must be on deck, everyone must assist the government. That’s why in my palace, people accuse me of being too security conscious, but I told them that well, maybe because I was a policeman, but it’s God that is the ultimate security of our lives.

“It is very necessary. We are happy because the governor did very well. All the security agencies did all that they could do but we still have to be at alert. Everybody must be prepared. We are not going to take things for granted now.”

He lauded the governor’s and the security agencies’ efforts in rescuing the Iba monarch.

Responding, Ambode said the state government deployed its security intelligence to unravel the circumstances surrounding the monarch’s kidnap.

The governor said: ‘’At the initial stage, when the Oba was kidnapped, it appeared as if government was not doing anything. That was actually not the case. It was not just a sacrilege in Yorubaland, but the traditional institution was indeed desecrated. So, we needed to dig into what really happened to reach a logical conclusion.”

Ambode assured the monarchs that such incident would never occur in the state again.

“We will now pay greater attention collectively to the security of our traditional rulers. We need to increase security especially for those rulers in the riverine areas. Whatever it is that the Council of Obas must do, must be done to strengthen the security in that area, but there must be cohesion and unity amongst us.

“Anything that will bring about  peace and make the state progress is our priority and the security of lives and property has always been the priority of this government,” the governor said.

Also yesterday, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Fatai Owoseni threatened to confiscate houses and hotels used as hideouts for kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state.

Addressing reporters after the State Security Council meeting presided over by Ambode, Owoseni said: “There is no hiding place for criminal elements again as we get them, they would be made to face the full wrath of the law. In addition to that, the Council resolved that any structure or any places of hiding that criminal elements are using, the state will not hesitate to take over those safe havens, structures or houses,” he said.

Owoseni also advised criminals  to turn over a new leaf and get themselves meaningfully engaged, warning that ‘’there is no hiding place for them in the state’’.

She said: “We all need to know that it is only when we have peace that government can achieve sustainable national development.

“‘The bombing in Saudi-Arabia, Baghdad and other countries is an unfortunate and condemnable situation.

“And we need to be reminded that Islam condemns bombing, killing and terrorism, and Islam does not uphold anything that hurts humanity.

“As we celebrate the end of Ramadan, we as Muslims and Nigerians need to examine our essence in life, pay attention to what is happening around us and embrace peace and love for one another.

“That is the way to achieve progress and prosperity in Lagos State and in the nation at large,’’ she said.

The deputy governor thanked the residents for maintaining harmonious co-existence and urged them to be vigilant and report any form of strange movements and activities in their environment.

Akiolu urged Nigerians to support the Federal Government in the fight against terrorism and corruption.

“The Federal Government alone cannot fight terrorism and corruption which are the major challenges Nigeria is facing today. The state and local governments as well as Nigerians must be a part of this fight,’’ the Lagos paramount traditional ruler said.

Gbajabiamila urged Muslim clerics not to relent in the teaching of the principles of Islam to curb the spread of religious extremism.

Police Commissioner Mr Fatai Owoseni, urged Muslims to sustain the lessons of Ramadan and avoid violence and activities that could cause chaos in the society.

“All the vices we have been able to avoid and restrain ourselves from during the 30 days Ramadan should be sustained.

“And I advise Nigerians to avoid violence and anything that can cause chaos in the country. They should be very observant, vigilant and security conscious,’’ Owoseni said.

Chief Imam of Lagos Sheikh Garuba Akinola Ibrahim, who led the prayer, called for love and tolerance among Nigerians, irrespective of religion and tribe.

Sheikh Ibrahim urged Muslims not to consider the celebration as an occasion for merry-making only but that which called for sober reflection and rededication to the service of God and humanity.

A Medical Director at the Federal Medical Centre, Ebutte-Meta Dr Munirat Jinadu, said no nation would prosper or develop without love and tolerance among its people.

Jinadu urged Muslims to imbibe love and live in peace with people of other religion as exemplified by Prophet Mohammed.

  • Alaafin, Ooni, Akiolu, scholars seek speaking of Yoruba in Southwest schools

Alaafin, Ooni, Akiolu, scholars seek speaking of Yoruba in Southwest schools

Three prominent traditional rulers in Yorubaland yesterday backed the speaking of Yoruba language in schools in Lagos State as well as other Southwest states.

They spoke at a one-day summit of stakeholders at Agidingbi, Ikeja to deliberate on a bill to make the teaching and speaking of the language compulsory in primary, secondary schools as well as tertiary institutions in the state.

The bill is before the state House of Assembly, which organised the summit under the Committee on Education, chaired by Lanre Ogunyemi.

The Obas present at the event are: Ooni of Ife Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Alaafin of Oyo Lamidi Adeyemi and Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos.

Oba Adeyemi hailed the organisers of the programme and said traditional rulers in Yorubaland would support any move to promote the language.

According to him, the first person to do a research on the impact of languages to development was the late Prof. Babs Fafunwa, a former minister of education.

“The first African bishop, Ajayi Crowther, translated Hebrew and English Bibles into Yoruba language and about 11 other languages,” he said, emphasising that language is culture.

Ooni Ogunwusi urged Yoruba people to see themselves as leaders, stressing that God has blessed them abundantly.

The Oba lamented that the language was not being promoted as it should be due to in-fighting and disunity.

He added that this was causing a lot of setbacks for the race.

He wondered why the Yorubas neglected the Ifa oracle, which he called the angel of wisdom that understands everything.

“Ifa is the root of computers and telephones. The white men even named a computer ‘oracle’.

“Presently, we are doing Ifa anniversary in Ile-Ife and a lot of white men are there now,” he said.

Oba Akiolu advised that the programme should be replicated in the states in the Southwest.

He urged everyone to pray for the success of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola attended the event. Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun and Lagos State Akinwunmi Ambode were represented.

Aregbesola added that anybody attending school in Yorubaland should be made to study and acquire a certificate in Yoruba language before they can graduate.

In his lecture at the event, notable Yoruba scholar, playwright and actor, Prof. Akinwunmi Ishola, said it was important for the people to promote the language since people are better recognised based on their language, culture and tradition.

Ishola, whose lecture was presented by Prof. Duro Adeleke of University of Ibadan, noted that Yoruba is one of the three languages recognised as the major languages in Nigeria, with the rest being Igbo and Hausa.

The eminent scholar, who spoke on the theme: “Making the teaching of Yoruba compulsory in public and private schools in Lagos State”, the scholar said India and Arabian countries that were colonised by the British did not neglect their local languages.

He said: “We should speak Yoruba in our institutions. Yoruba is one of the languages recommended to be taught in our schools to promote unity and it occupies a prominent position among languages in the world.

“If you lose your language, you would lose your culture. Language of a people has to do with their culture, language, dress, hairstyle and some other things.”

Ishola explained that Yoruba is rich in greetings and that they have greetings for all occasions.

He added that ‘Ifa’ was sent to the United Nations Education and Scientific Organisation (UNESCO) in 2004 and that it was recognised as being rich in culture in 2005.

He suggested that Yoruba language be made compulsory in primary and secondary schools and that it should be a general study in colleges of education, polytechnics and universities.

He added that books written in foreign languages should be interpreted in the local language.

Prof. Akinloye Ojo, who teaches Yoruba in one of the United States (U.S.) universities and Prof. Akanni Ige, who also lectures the language in Republic of Benin, urged the guests to make sure the language is upgraded and cherished.

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudasiru Obasa noted that the forum was organised by the House to restore the lost glory of Yoruba language.

He regretted that most of the public and private schools did not follow the National Policy on Education on language.

Ogunyemi said the forum was organised to emphasise the importance of teaching Yoruba language in primary and secondary schools.

Other dignitaries present at the event include Lagos State Deputy Governor Mrs. Idiat Adebule; the state governor’s wife, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode; the lawmakers of the Assembly; Senator Olorunimbe Mamora; Prof. Sophie Oluwole; Prof. Harrison Adeniyi; Abayomi Kinyomi and others.

  • Akiolu: councils’ funds seizure affected Lagos growth

Akiolu: councils’ funds seizure affected Lagos growth

Oba Riliwanu Akiolu of Lagos has said the seizure of Local Government funds by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration contributed to the slow pace of the state’s development.

Akiolu spoke at an inaugural lecture, which is part of activities for the Lagos State at 50 Anniversary in Lagos.

The Obasanjo-led administration withheld Lagos state local government funds, following the creation of 37 new local council development areas (LCDAs) under former Governor Bola Tinubu.

The state’s refusal to cancel the LCDAs as directed by the Federal Government led to the withholding of funds meant for the 20 existing local governments.

Akiolu said Tinubu, with all his development plans would have done much for the state, but for the seizure of the allocation.

According to the monarch, Lagos state would have been far developed by now.

“Senator Bola Tinubu came with robust development plans for Lagos State, but he could not do so much because of the seizure of local governments’ funds. But he laid the foundation upon which his successors had been building.

“The state was blessed with Governor Babatunde Fashola, and now, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. These governors have taken Lagos to an enviable height with unassailable internally generated revenue,” he said.

Akiolu urged political office holders to be sincere and honest in all their dealings.

He also urged residents to support the government as it strives to develop the state and make life comfortable for them.

  • Akiolu seeks ‘special status’ for Lagos

The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu 1, has urged the Federal Government to grant a ‘special status’ classification on Lagos State. He spoke on the sidelines while receiving members of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) who paid him a courtesy call in his palace.

According to the Oba, the challenge of providing infrastructure for a state such as Lagos is quite enormous notwithstanding the volume of its commercial activities. For instance, he said the Apapa-Oshodi expressway, which serves the Lagos ports, presents a genuine case for such privilege that the state deserves.

Besides, he noted that with the discovery of oil in Badagry and its subsequent exploration, there will be a need for development of greater infrastructure along that axis to cushion the effect of the operational activities on the state.

“Apapa Ports generate huge income for the country; but look at the road along that corridor. The government at the center should help the state in this area,” he said.

Several Lagos residents share the royal father’s views. For instance, Tayo Oluwole, a civil servant, explained that with an estimated influx of 600, 000 people yearly trooping into the state, Oba Akiolu’s call, he reasoned, is valid.

  • Akiolu blames govt, Dangote for Lekki crisis

Akiolu blames govt, Dangote for Lekki crisis

Who should be blamed for the October 12, 2015 Lekki crisis which claimed the life of Lekki Free Zone (LFZ) Managing Director Tajudeen Disu?

It is the government, Lekki Investment Worldwide (LIW) and Dangote Investment management, says Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos.

Oba Akiolu, who was testifying before the tribunal set up by the government to probe the crisis, said the government’s “insincerity” caused the problem.

The monarch also regretted recommending Disu for appointment.

“I was instrumental to the coming of the late Disu to assist the state government. If I had known that he would meet his untimely death, I wouldn’t have allowed him to come,” he said.

“I came to the tribunal when I heard about the matter in the media.

“What happened at Lekki is insincerity on the part of government and investors. These (villagers) are native people but have been dispossessed of their land which they use for survival.  So, the government has fault there”.

According to him, there should have been public enlightenment on what government wants for the villagers.

He said the government claimed that those who had been paid came back to request for more money, adding that it was not being emphasised that the $100million Dangote gave as compensation was inadequate.

The monarch also blamed the community for taking laws into its hands.

“The people are uneducated and were doing the right thing in a wrong way. Majority of the landowners in the whole of Lekki don’t want to work, they only want to sell land,” he said.

Oba Akiolu urged the government and investors to make the people shareholders in their companies.

“Any company that comes to take land must ensure that at least five percent shares of the company are reserved for landowners while their children should be sent to school,” he advised.

The monarch urged the government to prevail on Dangote Group President Aliko Dangote to talk to the people, stressing that they should be renumerated for their crops.

Besides, he said, well known people should be engaged when compensation is to be given to the community.

  • Buhari, Akiolu congratulate Ooni

    Buhari, Akiolu congratulate Ooni

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday congratulated Prince Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi on his emergence as the 51st Ooni of Ife.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said the President rejoiced with Prince Ogunwusi  on his  nomination  and confirmation by Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The statement reads: “As he prepares to begin the rites of ascension to the revered throne of his ancestors, President Buhari urges the Ooni-designate  to commit himself to carrying his subjects along to a new era of peace, stability and progress in Ife, Yorubaland and Nigeria.

The President  called on Prince Ogunwusi to be prepared to put his new position as Ooni and principal custodian of the cultural heritage and traditions of the Yoruba to good use in the service of his people and country.

He urged the Ooni-designate to dedicate himself to building on, and surpassing the legacies of his predecessor, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, and working with government and other traditional rulers to foster greater harmony, peaceful co-existence and faster socio-economic development of his people and Nigerians.

The President prayed God to grant him the immense wisdom and courage required to oversee further progress and greater prosperity for his people.

He wished the Ooni a long and highly successful reign in the service of his people and country.

Oba of Lagos Rilwanu Babatunde Akiolu has congratulated the Ooni-designate, urging him to put the welfare of the people first and maintain a policy of honesty and loyalty to the government and the people.

In a statement yesterday, Oba Akiolu advised the monarch to be careful of some “commercial Yoruba leaders parading themselves about.”

Describing the Ooni as one of the highest ranking monarchs in Yoruba land, Oba Akiolu said he requires wisdom and objectivity to navigate. He advised the Ooni to deal frankly and honestly with all for the progress of the people.

He said: “I must be frank and honest with you; you have to stretch out hands of fellowship to other equally qualified princes among whom it pleases God to bestow the highest royal honour on you. Do not arrogate to yourself what is not necessary, you are not a poor person  before you ascended the throne, you are advised to be very close to your God and be absolutely loyal to the government and your people and make known to them honest facts.

“Do not say things to satisfy people or government, be very objective in your dealings towards the progress of your people, Yoruba race and Nigeria in general. Let them know you for what you are, like Caesar’s wife try to be above board, at the time you ascend the throne, Yoruba race and Nigerians in general were in dire need of frank, honest and peace loving Obas. Be very careful among the few bad commercial Yoruba leaders that are parading themselves about,” Akiolu said.

The Oba of Lagos cautioned the Ooni-designate against greed and dictatorial tendencies.  “Do not grab what is not yours because you are now in a position of advantage, remember, it is all for a limited time. I do not have a reservoir of knowledge but I always remember Almighty Allah and I have feelings for others. Though I respect others, I fear no one. Once again, I congratulate you and wish you long life.”
