  • Lagos CBT centres ready to conduct UTME – JAMB

The Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) says the 78 accredited Computer Based Test (CBT) centres in Lagos are fully ready to conduct the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) starting from April 11.

Mr. Babatunde Bamisaye, Coordinator JAMB Lagos office, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday.

He spoke on the sideline of the matriculation of newly admitted students at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Yaba, for the 2018/2019 academic session.

According to him, as far as Lagos state is concerned, as at today, we have 78 accredited centres and all of them are fully ready with their personnel on ground.

“The board had visited the centres and certified them technically fit to conduct the examination.

“The Lagos office of the board had also been able to resolve complaints brought before it by intending candidates as the Servicom and Public Relations division of the board was dedicated to treat such cases.

“We have been solving their problems and maybe one or two problems we are unable to solve locally, we refer it online to the head office for necessary attention,” he said.

The coordinator, however, warned candidates not to attempt to bring items such as glasses, scientific wrist watches that were banned by the board to the examination premises, saying that they were unacceptable.

“This is already a law pronounced by the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede and anyone caught with such items will be sanctioned.

“Except for special cases, such as recommended eye glasses proven beyond doubt that would be understandable,” he said.

Bamisoye also advised parents to keep off the examination centres because their coming would add no value to the conduct of the examination, but may rather hinder its success.

“What parents need to do is to get their children prepared, give them transport money and allow them to go and write their examination, after which they return home,” he said.

  • Three arrested for impersonating INEC workers

Three persons have been arrested by police impersonating officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ).

Kaiyewu Folahan, Akintunde Ibukun and Azeez Kazeem were arrested in Somolu Lagos.

Their arrest, according to police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP), followed a complaint from the Deputy Director of INEC in Somolu Local Government Area, Mrs S.O. Akinwunmi on Tuesday.

Mrs Akinwunmi, Oti said she informed the police that some persons at Shop no. 33, Aluta Plaza, Federal College of Education, Akoka, were impersonating INEC workers and recruiting ad-hoc staff.

Oti said the Commissioner of Police (CP) Imohimi Edgal, directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Pedro Police Station to infiltrate the camp of the culprits with his undercover operatives.

“The operatives did as directed, leading to the arrest of the suspects, namely: Kaiyewu Folahan, Akintunde Ibukun and Azeez Kazeem. The exhibits recovered from them included a laptop, 511 INEC Lagos Ad-hoc Recruitment Forms, already filled with passport photographs attached,” he said.

They were remanded in prison pending when they would meet their bail conditions.

The case was adjourned till April 16.

  • College students applaud Red Cheetah free Wi-Fi service

Students of the Federal College of Education (Technical) in Akoka, Lagos, have praised the management of SWIFT Networks Limited for extending its Red Cheetah free Wi-Fi service to its campus. The service went live at the institution last week Tuesday.

SWIFT Networks Limited’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Charles Anudu, said the service, which is supported by revenue from leading global brands, was conceived to make fast and free broadband service available to Nigerians, thereby helping to deepen broadband penetration in support of the National Broadband Plan of the Federal Government.

He said: “Our free service aims to connect Nigerians to the global digital society through access to a fast, free and secure broadband service that consequently create measurable value for the excellent brands that make the service possible. We believe that access to information, especially in an academic environment, remains a key driver for academic excellence and innovation.”

Speaking with CAMPUSLIFE, a 100-Level student of Primary Education, Esther Kolawole, said the free Wi-Fi provided students the support to make their academic and social experience remarkable.

A students’ leader, Grace Olaleye, who is in 300-Level Integrated Science, urged students living on the campus to take advantage of the free Wi-Fi service to explore opportunities and expand their knowledge base.

  • ‘Education sector critical to Lagos State development’

‘Education sector critical to Lagos State development’

Dean School of Education, Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos, Mrs Eniola Adigun has launched a book entitled History of Educational Development in Nigeria: A Concise Approach.

It was a three-in-one event on Thursday for Mrs Eniola Adigun, Dean School of Education, Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos. The event was meant to celebrate her 55th birthday, three successful decades of being trainer of teachers and presentation of a book entitled History of Educational Development in Nigeria: A Concise Approach.

The event was held at Christopher Popoola Hall in the premises of the college.

The Special Guest of Honour and Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, praised the author for her efforts in writing the book which he  said would be beneficial to stakeholders in the education sector. Represented at the event by his Permanent Secretary, Office of the Special Adviser on Education, Dr Shamsideen Allison, Ambode said the book would help in developing the state’s road map on education.

“We appreciate the sacrifice of the author. The state government has a road map on education and the book would help us in developing our road map. We know where we are coming from, where we are and where we are heading to,” he said.

Ambode further said the growth of the education sector is critical to the development of the state, noting that the educational sector is inclusive in the state’s development agenda.

“We are making great efforts this year to develop the educational sector. We are fast-tracking development in primary and secondary schools as well as the tertiary institutions.

“We are committed to the development of quality education and we focus a lot on the professionalism of our teachers. So much significance is placed on programmes as it will further help us in our efforts to develop the road map towards achieving the growth of the sector,” he said.

Mrs Adigun said the book is a simple one on the history of Nigeria’s educational development.

“I decided to do write this book because at a point in time, my students started seeing History as a voluminous subject and wanted to lose interest. I had to put in some efforts to simplify it, so that they can find it easy to read and understand.

“If a book is not simple and easy to understand, students would not want to read it. The book would be useful for all students of History in tertiary institutions,” she said.

She stressed the need for society to appreciate and corporate with teachers, noting that this would make the education system better, as teachers would put in their best.

“Teachers and parents are meant to work hand-in-hand. When we have a situation where parents are too busy making money and want the teachers to play the roles of parents and teachers, there would be a mix up.

“Another problem confronting the education sector is that some people become teachers because they could not make it in the other sectors. If we do not produce good teachers, the future of our children is at stake. This is why the government and everybody must give teachers the best.

“Teachers also must realise that the profession is noble. There is no profession that teachers do not teach. Teachers should see themselves as professionals and know they have a role to play in the society.

“This is a three-in-one event in which I am marking my 55th birthday, 30 years of teaching and the book launch. I feel fulfilled, happy and I thank God for His grace. I was 55 on February 3,” she said.

Head of Department, Adult Education, Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, Prof. Cecilia Oladapo, said the book launch is one of the greatest things that would happen in the education sector.

According to her, the author worked hard to contribute to knowledge, education and to leave a legacy for the young ones to let them know the joy of putting knowledge down for others to read and learn from.

“It is a welcome development and I would urge all teachers to emulate her.”

She noted that the major challenge with the education sector is that many teachers embraced the profession out of pity.

“Many embraced the teaching profession because they were unable to meet up with the cut-off points for other courses. Many parents do not want their children to be teachers and many of the students also do not want to be teachers. Because of this, education students are not committed throughout their years in school.

“Many of them continued to write JAMB during their first to third years in a bid to move to other courses. It is in their fourth year that many of them settle down. This is why we are not producing quality teachers. Many teachers are not passionate about the profession. Teaching is not meant for lazy people. As a teacher, you must be up and doing, current and ready to read; you cannot rely on past glory.

“Another issue is that teachers are not encouraged; most often they do not receive salaries as at when due. As a result, they may not be able to meet their financial obligations; this makes them look for a way to augment their salaries by going into trades at the expense of reading and preparing lesson notes.

Until government is ready to place premium on the education sectors, we may not be able to have committed or zealous teachers.

“The way forward is for government to improve the standard of education and let it be at par with other sectors. Raise the standard of teachers and give them the same salary level as others,” she said.

How two brothers lured, raped, obtained N19, 000 from victim

A 22-years old lady (names withheld) Monday narrated to an Ikeja High Court her ordeal in the hands of two brothers, Bright and Chijindu Nwachukwu, who raped and defrauded her of N19, 000.00.

Bright (31) and Chijindu  (23) are both standing trial before Justice Josephine Oyefeso on two count charge of rape and obtaining money by false pretense.

The offence, according to the prosecutor, Mrs C.K Tunji- Carrena, are contrary to sections 135, 137 and 312 (3) of the Criminal law of Lagos state 2011.

The defendants had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Led in evidence by the prosecutor, the victim who is a graduate of Biology and an entrepreneur, told the court that she met the first defendant, Bright for the first time on February 12 this year at Iyana Ipaja, on her way to the University of Lagos, Akoka where she had just graduated to sort out a medical registration.

She maintained that she had never met him prior to that day.

The witness said the defendant approached her in French Language and asked her for an address of one Diamond warehouse which she also told him she does not know where it is situated.

She also noted that there was a man beside Bright who asked me to describe the place to him if I know there.

She however left the two men at the spot and checked her time after the conversation only for her to realized that she could not meet up with her appointment and decided to return home.

According to the witness, she met with the first defendant and the other man again on her way home and he asked the same question and she maintained she did not know the place.

“I wanted to be on my way but the other man that was with him pleaded with me to help him. At this point, Bright handed him some foreign currencies. He held my hand and said that we should follow him.

“At that moment, I don’t know what I was doing again, I just followed them and we crossed to the other side of the road at Iyana-Ipaja and boarded a bus towards Sango. I paid the transport fare for the three of us and we later alighted at a bus-stop which I didn’t know the name.

“We took a tricycle to another place where we met the second defendant  Chijindu who disguised as a store-keeper. We entered the place and they brought out something that looks like a photo-film and washed it in a liquid and it turned into a N1000 note.
” He folded the money and asked me to take a bite and took an oath that if I tell anyone about what taking place, I would die,” she said.

She further told the court that the second defendant, Chijindu told her to bring some money so that they can print more money but she did not have cash on her.

“He collected my ATM card, pin number and headed to the bank.

“While they (second defendant and storekeeper) were away, the first defendant asked me if I eat fish and I replied in the affirmative. He again reminded me that I would die as a result of the oath I had with him earlier if I tell anybody about what happened.

“I became so scared and I started crying and I pleaded with him that I don’t want to die. Bright then told me that the only option to avoid death is to have sex with me. I started begging him again not to have sex with me but he eventually had his way.

“When Chijindu came from where he had gone to withdraw the 19,000 that I had in my First bank account, he ordered me to delete the alert message sent by my bank. He also came back with another man who claimed to be a pastor.

He brought in a bucket of water and after looking through it, he said my mother has some money in her drawer and I should go home and bring the whole money. He instructed me not to talk to anyone until I accomplished the mission”.

The Witness said she caught glimpse of a sign post “Toluwalase” memorised  it.

She also told the court that when she got home, she met her mother and her brother who later told her that she was acting strange and restless.

“My mother later came to me and held me , seeking to know what happened to me and I told her I don’t want to die . She was shocked and we were both crying.

My mother told me that God is the owner of my life and I came back to my senses and told her all that happened.

According to the witness, her mother later put a call through to her pastor and she was later taken to the family hospital due to the sexual assault and was later referred to St Leo hospital in Ikeja.

She also said the matter was also reported at Area G police station in Ogba from where she was referred to Mirabel Centre at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for check- up and counseling.

During cross-examination by the defence counsel, Mr. Ikenna Okoli, the witness maintained that she gave her ATM to the second defendant and money was withdrawn from her First bank account.

She also insisted that the first defendant had sex with her without her consent.

The matter was thereafter adjourned till October 10, 2017 for continuation of trial.

  • Lecturers demand management’s commitment

    Lecturers demand management’s commitment

Lecturers from the Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCOPED), Noforija in Epe, Lagos State, have vowed to continue their indefinite strike ‎until the management pays half of the outstanding debts it owes them.

The Union Chairman, Mr Michael Adefuye, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that the payment would stand as a commitment from the management to the lecturers before the strike could be called off.

Adefuye said following the declaration of the strike on April 18, the Special Adviser (SA) to Gov. Akinwumi Ambode on Education, had on April 21 invited the union executive for a meeting.

He said the ‎governor’s aide had appealed to the union leaders to call off the strike as the government had increased the college’s monthly subvention effective from May 2016.

According to him, the special adviser assured them that when the subvention is increased the management will start paying the outstanding debt monthly until it has cleared all.

But the chairman insisted that the management must pay half of the outstanding debt, as a commitment before suspending its strike.

According to him, the union insisted so because the current provost has just three years more to spend with the college.

He noted that the outstanding debt was 42 months of unremitted pensions to the Pension Fund Administrator (PFA) and must be cleared before the end of the tenure of the present administration.

“From our calculation, if we agree to the monthly payment of the debt as proposed by the SA, the present management will not finish paying the debt before the expiration of the present provost.

“That is why we are insisting that half of the debt, which is 21 months be paid, so that the remaining 21 months can be paid before the tenure of the provost lapses,’’ he said.

He said that the executive would call a congress next week to table the outcome of the meeting with the special adviser.

‎NAN reports that the lecturers, under the auspices of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), MOCPED, Noforija, Epe Chapter, had on April 18, declared an indefinite strike and staged a peaceful protest.

The union said it declared the strike as a result of the non-implementation of its demands by the college authorities.

It was demanding for the payment of 42 months’ of un-remitted pensions to the Pension Funds Administrator (PFA) ‎after the state government increased its monthly subvention in 2013.

It also accused the management of collapsing the degree programmes with Ekiti State University (EKSU), while others such as Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED) and Federal College of Education, Akoka, affiliates were flourishing.

‎According to the union, the present administration lacks transparency in the financial administration of the college’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), TETFUND and subvention, among other complains and demands‎.
