QUARTZ, a news outlet, has chosen 30 innovators in Africa for their creative approaches to local problems in business, politics, culture, health and more. This was made known by Yinka Adegoke, the editor of Quartz Africa on Monday September 14, at the Quartz Africa Innovators summit.

Among those honoured at the event was Nigeria’s filmmaker of repute, Kunle Afolayan. Afolayan, got off to a great start this year when his award-winning drama, October 1 became one of the first-ever Nollywood movies to get signed up for distribution on Netflix, the world’s largest Internet-based video on-demand platform. October 1, had one of the biggest ever budgets for a Nollywood movie.

On the list is American pop singer with a Senegalese background, Akon. The singer is known to have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and worked with artists including Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and Gwen Stefani. He is is reinventing himself beyond American pop music by returning to his African roots and lending his name and media brand to a groundbreaking Lighting Africa initiative.

Nigeria’s novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi  Adichie, is also one of Quartz’ 30 innovators. One of the continent’s most celebrated authors, Adichie’s novels; Purple Hibiscus, Half of A Yellow Sun, Americanah, and her collection of short stories, The Thing Around Your Neck have reached a global audience, introducing millions to modern Africa, and especially to her native Nigeria.

Also on the list is Nigerian Singer, songwriter and music producer Cobhams Asuquo. Regarded as one of the most talented musicians in Nigeria, Cobhams has produced hits such as Ordinary People. Though he was born blind, he has never let that dissuade him from being ambitious. Asuquo has been one of the few to stand firm and encourage a new generation of African musicians to retain an “African” sound in their music. He has done this most notably as a judge on the American Idol-like TV show Project Fame.

Others who made the list of innovators are Jamila Abass, Kunle Adeyemi, Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu, Eric Charas and Didier Drogba among others.

Civic engagement: Nigerian youth stands up against violence.

“I want the light in the life of every YALI Network member to shine so bright that others might, through their light, find their way”. These were the words of Prosper Egeonu.

By the time he was 30, Prosper Egeonu had witnessed too much violence in Jos, the capital city of Plateau state – central Nigeria. He didn’t want to see any more.

Thousands have died in conflict that has erupted in outbreaks of violence for more than a decade. Indigenous people and settlers from other ethnic groups clash over land, power and resources.

Having experienced the horrific acts of inter-community violence in his youth, Egeonu began to devote his business, civic and personal activities to ending violence.

Prosper Egeonu and other young leaders participate in a daylong National Youth Leadership Summit in October 2014.

In 2009 Egeonu, a YALI Network member, joined the Jos Crisis Appeal Fund (JCAF) as a volunteer, determined to get more people in the state capital to stand up to the horrific acts.

JCAF is a partnership between Christians, Muslims and civil society groups that raises funds to provide financial assistance, medical attention and education to local families affected by conflict.

This grass-roots civic group also helps displaced families find stable homes, and funds organizations that work for peace.

In 2010, Egeonu started Swagg News Africa, a media entertainment group, and Stanperz Conceptz, a roofing business. He combined the outreach efforts of both enterprises to start the “Stop the Violence” campaign.

The campaign aims to promote awareness of peace and to provide a talent showcase for youth from all religions. He partnered with a local radio station to provide youth with the entertainment program Friday Night Dance Party with Joey.

He went on to partner with the Performing Musicians Employers’ Association of Nigeria to further get the message of peace to music fans. He even recruited young U.S. hip-hop artist Akon and actor J.D. Williams to craft messages to “stop the violence.”

Continuing his pursuit of peace, in 2013 Egeonu joined the national nonprofit Dialogue, Reconciliation and Peace (DREP) as a volunteer trainer.

According to him, DREP brings together youth, women, and local leaders of various religious and ethnic groups to learn from each other about how they can “resolve issues that would otherwise result in violent confrontation” and create peace.

While Egeonu admits that his efforts to reach his goal can sometimes be frustrating — volunteers become disinterested, illiteracy among some in the target groups limits his ability to get messages through, and financial constraints limit DREP’s peace building efforts from reaching more rural communities – he remains determined.

“Responses I get from people I reach have been positive,” he said. He suggests more training in leadership and team-building for fellow volunteers in order to help them stay interested.

Egeonu is active in the YALI Network and especially likes the #YALICHAT discussion forum. He has earned YALI Network certificates for online courses in civic leadership, business and entrepreneurship, and public management.

“I have learned a lot from YALI resource information. It has built me to be a better leader,” he said, adding that the highest call of leadership is ‘unlocking the potential of other people.’

He therefore urges other youth to join YALI and to engage their communities to help solve problems.

“I want the light in the life of every YALI Network member to shine so bright that others might, through their light, find their way,” he summed.

  • SONG WITH AKON IS BIGGEST COLLABORATION OF ALL TIME, SAYS B-RED

SONG WITH AKON IS BIGGEST COLLABORATION OF ALL TIME, SAYS B-RED

HAVING released his debut collaboration with Akon, HKN artiste, B-Red has described the single as the biggest collaboration of all time.

Speaking with The Nation, he talks about the storyline of the song: “The song is telling a story of me liking a girl, and she liking me too. But she does not want any serious relationship; she just wants to sleep with me. All she wants is the ‘Cucumber’. I’m saying I don’t want one night stand, but that’s what she wants.”

The artiste, who also happens to be Davido’s cousin aside from being a record label mate, feels his greatest dream as regards music was to feature Akon, as only few Nigerian artistes have done collaboration with him.

“I’m happy to be precise; it’s only a few people that have a smashing collaboration with Akon in Nigeria; Psquare, Dbanj, Wizkid, Tubaba, Davido and me.”

When asked how he met Akon and did he pay for the song to be done, he said: “Interestingly, I wrote it and did it alone at first. But after the Meek Mill video with me and Davido in America, we went to Akon’s studio because Akon is on David’s album too.

“While at the studio, after Davido played his songs for him, I also played ‘Cucumber for Akon and the way he reacted, he was like ‘please play that song again’. Even Davido and his manager were surprised that what’s going on! Then he made me play it for him like four times. He fell in love with the jam and said I should leave it with him and the next day, I collected it.

“Normally you have to pay for something like this, but it is the Grace of God, I got it for free. Akon is a legend so I am happy and thankful to God.”

On delay in releasing the song, B-Red said doing something different from what he has always been doing is worth the wait. “I want to release both audio and video of the song at the same time. And I’m going to shoot the video in two weeks.”

This piece of information was made known by Glittaz Record, the artiste’s record label.

According to Mr Bolaji St. Daniel Mattew, CEO of Glittaz Record, the deal will see Convict Music taking over the artiste’s promotion on the international scene while his record label handles his promotions in Africa.
