  • Orphanage celebrates 25th anniversary

Founder Little Saints Orphanage Mrs. Dele George has announced that the orphanage will turn 25 on June 4.

She called on all friends and donors to visit the orphanage located in Warri, Ibadan, Itele, Ogudu, Akowonjo and Abule-Egba on the said day to celebrate with the children.

In a statement made available to reporters, she said the orphanage which was founded on June 4, 1994, was the first indigenous non-governmental orphanage approved by the Lagos State government.

She said: “Being the first private orphanage to be registered by the Lagos State government in 1994, Little Saints Orphanage has blazed the trail of institutional care of vulnerable children. With an outstanding network of support, excellent facilities, a dynamic team of social workers and care givers, the orphanage has raised hundreds of children who have been able to overcome their negative childhood experiences and blossomed into young adults ready to make their mark in the world.

“Little Saints Orphanage can also boast of having the highest number of children to be adopted by any orphanage. The orphanage works in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development and the Ministry of Women Affairs in other states of operations on issues of adoption, care and protection.

“The orphanage has, in the past 25 years, rehabilitated, reformed and re-integrated children who have had  to overcome their traumatic experiences such as abandonment, rejection, abuse and even modern day slavery,” she said.

The orphanage has received numerous awards for their demonstration of excellence in charity and child welfare.

The orphanage currently operates in four states of the country and is a member of the Association of Orphanages and Homes Operators in Nigeria (ASOHON).

Police arrest cripple for ‘illegal’ firearms possession

The police in Lagos have arrested a physically challenged man, Godwin Fawehinmi, for alleged illegal possession of fire arms and dangerous weapons.

Fawehinmi was arrested at Alhaji Sadiku Street in Akowonjo, Egbeda, by detectives led by the Area M Commander, Austin Akika, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) last week.

It was gathered that his arrest followed a tip off to the police that the suspect usually threatened people with gun.

Fawehinmi, who was said to have spent the better part of his life abroad, it was learnt, usually fired warning shots in the air.

According to a police source, three guns including a pump action rifle and a locally made pistol were recovered from his residence.

He said: “He was arrested last Sunday. The suspect lived in Europe and that was where he had an accident and became crippled. He returned to Nigeria and since then, he has been acting as area father to boys in his neighbourhood.

“We got information that he usually opened fire and that people in the area were scared of him. We acted on the information and the Area Commander led some officers to his place to investigate.

“We found a gun on his body. His house was searched and more guns, two cutlasses and axe were recovered. He does not have licences for them.

“When he was asked what he was doing with the weapons, he said he used them to protect himself. He was transferred to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) at the command’s headquarters.”

    Flood takes over Akowonjo road

Heavy flood on Thursday took over the streets of Adeoti and environs in the Akowonjo Local Government Area of Lagos State, as a result of the midday rain, causing heavy gridlock for commuters as well as motorists.

Several commuters found it incredibly difficult to wade across the flooded area as the water slightly got up to the knee level, leaving commuters with no choice than to walk on the kerb that separates both lanes of the road while holding on to the stuck vehicles  in traffic.

Eye witnesses blamed the situation on the lack of proper drainage facilities as the water level rose, enclosing the drainages on both sides of the road.
