Akpabio appeals court order recalling Natasha

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has filed a notice of appeal to challenge the ruling of the Federal High Court, which ‘ordered’ the recall of suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to the Senate.

In a notice of appeal dated July 14, 2025, filed by Akpabio—through his lead counsel, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, SAN, Akpabio is seeking to overturn the July 4 judgment delivered by Justice Binta Nyako.

The High Court had described Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension as “excessive” and without legal justification.

The appeal, marked CA/2025, arises from suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025, which was instituted by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to challenge her suspension from the Senate.

Akpabio’s legal team is contesting the High Court’s jurisdiction, insisting the matter concerns the internal affairs of the National Assembly and falls outside judicial purview as provided under Section 251 of the 1999 Constitution.

The Senate President in his 11 grounds of appeal, faulted the Federal High Court for dismissing his preliminary objection and for issuing orders affecting parliamentary procedures protected by law.

According to the Senate President, issues pertaining to suspension, words spoken during plenary, and Senate resolutions are safeguarded under the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act and cannot be subjected to judicial interference.

The Senate President further claimed that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suit was premature as it did not exhaust the internal dispute resolution mechanism of the Senate, particularly the Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions, as prescribed in the Senate Standing Orders, 2023 (as amended).

He also faulted the trial court for allegedly breaching his right to a fair hearing by raising issues not argued by any of the parties, including the question of whether Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension was excessive.

Akpabio said the judge erred by making recommendations for her recall without giving both sides an opportunity to address the issue.

“The court cannot grant a relief that was not asked for,” the appeal stated, pointing out that the Federal High Court’s recommendation that Senator Natasha be recalled was not one of the reliefs she sought in her originating summons. “The court crossed the line.”

Akpabio also accused the Federal High Court of procedural irregularities by merging interlocutory reliefs sought by Akpoti-Uduaghan with her substantive claims, despite their duplication.

He also argued that her suit should have been struck out for failing to comply with Section 21 of the Legislative Houses Act, which requires a three-month notice to be served on the Clerk of the National Assembly before initiating legal action.

Among other reliefs, Akpabio urged the Court of Appeal to allow the appeal and set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court, atrike out the duplicated reliefs contained in Akpoti-Uduaghan’s multiple applications, dismiss her suit for lack of jurisdiction and reject what he termed the trial court’s “advisory opinions” to the Senate, especially those relating to amending its rules or recalling a suspended member.

The former Akwa Ibom Governor also urged the court to invoke Section 15 of the Court of Appeal Act to resolve his preliminary objection and dismiss the entire case.

2027: Akpabio rallies Niger Delta’s support for Tinubu

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said that the people of the Niger Delta are ready to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office, citing the developmental projects his administration has brought to the region.

Akpabio made the declaration over the weekend at the grand finale of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)’s 25th anniversary celebration held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The event, which marked the end of a week-long celebration, was attended by former President Goodluck Jonathan, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume (who represented President Tinubu), Rivers State Administrator Admiral Ibokette Ibas, ministers, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and other key stakeholders from the region.

According to a statement by Anietie Ekong, Special Assistant on Media and Communication to the Senate President, Akpabio said: “In the past, the Niger Delta was used as the goose that laid the golden egg, yet had nothing to show for it. But under President Tinubu, the region is witnessing tangible development, and the people are ready to stand by him beyond 2027.”

“Today President Tinubu has set up an Environmental Sciences University in Ogoni land to take care of the environment which had been degraded as a result of oil polution.

“He has also set up a Maritime University, signed it into an Act of Parliament in Okerenkoko in Delta State. He has given us several tertiary institutions in Agriculture, Technology and lots of others. So it is not only in terms of appointments but various projects.

“This is the region that produces the wealth of the nation. We have the right to chose who manages our resources. So people should not think that anybody can just come and become the President without consultation with the people of the Niger Delta.

“We the people of the Niger Delta have assessed President Tinubu and have found him fit to continue in office beyond 2027. So let the people who are conspiring against President Tinubu hear this. They did it before and conspired to remove our son, President Goodluck Jonathan.

“This time around the entire Niger Delta region has decided to speak with one voice. And we are telling the President ‘on your mandate we stand.’ No conspiracy formed against this Government that has recognized the Niger Delta shall prosper,” he said.

Senator Akpabio decried the high turnover of management team of the NDDC which he said had slowed the pace of development of the oil-rich region.

He however commended the present team led by the Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku for adhering to the vision of the founding fathers of the interventionist agency by embarking on projects that have impacted positively on the lives of the people of the region.

According to Senator Akpabio the frequent management change, created endless cycles where new leaders were removed before finishing projects, leaving thousands of initiatives abandoned and wasting billions meant for development.

“There were many reasons we have had so much problems in NDDC. Part of it was leadership tussle. In the Niger Delta region, we have what we call ‘periwinkle politics.’ This is politics where everybody bears the same head. Nobody wants to wait for his turn. Everybody feels that he should be there and not the other person.

“So there was always this conspiratorial situation. Each management in the NDDC would conspire against themselves and ofcourse the staff will assist them to quarrel and shortly after they will sack the management. And one of them would become the acting Managing Director,” he said.

Akpabio recounted how the Commission for over 20 years could not complete her headquarters building until he became the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and gave a marching order to the Commission to complete the long abandoned project.

According to Akpabio, the Commission left behind over 14,700 abandoned projects because regime change brought with it new projects. He said President Tinubu had discovered that incessant change of management was inimical to the development of the region hence the reason that the Federal Government had found it worthy for the admnistration of Ogboku to complete its tenure. “I salute the present management,” he said.

Akpabio commended the stability under the current leadership of Dr Ogbuku, urging that the commission must break away from endless cycles of sabotage and focus on continuity so that development projects can be completed.

Speaking in the same vein, former President Jonathan commended President Tinubu for continuing with the present board of the Commission and noted that this will engender sustainable development of the region.

Tinubu acknowledged the support of the Niger Delta region and said as the pioneer development Commission, the NDDC remained pivotal to the region’s economic growth and material well-being of the people.

The president said his administration’s legacy project, the 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, will complement the East-West Road and foster trade and connectivity across the region.

Akpabio hands over APC leadership in A’Ibom to Eno

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has handed over the leadership and political structure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State to Governor Umo Eno.

Akpabio performed the handing over at the first meeting of APC Stakeholders in the State at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Uyo.

Addressing the gathering, Eno urged the party’s leadership, from the Wards level upwards, to accept the movement and merger with open arms, in order for everyone to be beneficiaries of the movement.

“This is a merger and as the Senate President has said, we must, therefore,  approach it with love, unity, and understanding. There has to be some sacrifices from both ends.

“Let the leadership and members bring down the rhetorics so that we all can come together in droves and build a truly united All Progressives Congress in our State.

“We have heard stories where some ward leaders have brought out lists of requirements for people that want to join the party as if it is a marriage ceremony. Honestly, that should not be. We should be happy that Akwa Ibom is getting united, and we are all better for it,” he said.

Eno assured the stakeholders, especially Senator Godswill Akpabio, of his readiness to work together with the Party’s hierarchy, and support the ideology and interest of the Party for the overall good of the people of the State.

“I just want to tell our people and the party that I am here to work with you. I am here to contribute to the growth of the Party. We will work with you, and give you that honour that you so rightly deserve”.

Akpabio, who described Eno as a great unifier, a man of foresight and vision, said the governor’s leadership has brought peace and unity to Akwa Ibom and repositioned it for future growth.

The Senate President described Eno’s movement into APC  as a merger, and not an acquisition and urged all members to join hands to work for the progress and overall interest of the State.

He called on the Governor to integrate the State stressing that his position as the Senate President is not to lord over the Governor but to protect the interest of the State to ensure its progress, so as to leave behind a legacy of love, peace and unity for unborn generations.

He announced the modification of the party’s slogan to encourage integration, love, unity and progress.

Akwa.Ibom APC Chairman, Obong Stephen Ntukekpo, commended the Governor for his exceptional leadership style that has transformed the State to a united and peaceful haven.

Ntukekpo assured the Governor of the willingness and support of the party’s leadership, urging members to submit to his leadership, guidance and direction, for the expected growth and progress of the State.

The State APC Woman leader, Obonganwan Obonodo Uko, Youth Leader, Dr. Clement Awakessien, representatives of Chapter Chairmen, Mr. Utitofon Jeremiah, and representatives of ward chairmen, Mr. Edidiong Dama, appreciated the Governor for his inclusive leadership disposition and especially for reaching out to them even when he was yet to join the APC.

They acknowledged that a good number of their members benefited from the Governor’s empowerment initiatives, and pledged their readiness to support the Governo to attain his lofty ideals for the party and the State as contained in the ARISE Agenda.

The event was graced by members of the State Executive Council, and the political class.

NASS service sacrificial not for monetary gain- Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday, defended the financial integrity of lawmakers, saying their service in the National Assembly is sacrificial rather than for monetary gains.

Akpabio made these remarks while paying tribute to a former senator, Caleb Zagi, during the plenary.

He disagreed with the popular belief that members of the National Assembly are wealthy or motivated by personal financial gain.

The late senator, who represented Kaduna Southfrom 2007 to 2011, reportedly struggled to afford healthcare after leaving office and even had to solicit for support during his illness before his demise.

The Senate President, while commenting on the late senator’s financial predicament, stated that contrary to widespread belief, many lawmakers face financial hardship after losing elections, with some unable to afford basic medical care.

“Nigerians think a lot of money is spent in the National Assembly, but once you step out of the National Assembly, you are looking for money to even treat yourself, which shows the fallacy of all the insinuations and innuendos thrown at the legislators.

“So, I think it was an eye-opener for a lot of people. Some people think that we come here to make money. They don’t know that we come here to sacrifice for the growth of the nation so we can leave a better country for future generations,” he said .

Before the Senate President spoke, Abia South Senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe shared a personal encounter with Zagi before his demise where he had to contribute personal funds to assist him to foot medical bills.

Abaribe, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), mentioned that the late senator Zagi had to ask his former colleagues for financial assistance to pay his medical bills after leaving the senate.

“There’s an assumption that so much money is spent here on behalf of people. But of course, whatever you see, the day you walk out of this chamber is the day that this chamber also does not extend any benefits to you,” he said

Despite claims of financial difficulty, available data and disclosures from current and former lawmakers paint a different picture of lawmakers’ compensation.

The Revenue Mobilisation Fiscal Allocation Commission, the body authorised by law to prepare salaries and allowances for public officers, prescribed that a senator is entitled to over N1,063,860 monthly.

The monthly pay consists of a basic salary of N168,866:70, a motor vehicle fueling and maintenance allowance of N126,650:00, a personal assistant pay of N42,216:66, domestic staff pay of N126,650:00, and entertainment pay of N50,660:00.

Other benefits include: utilities, N50,660:00; newspapers/periodicals N25,330:00; wardrobe allowance, N42,216,66:00; house maintenance, N8,443.33:00 and constituency allowance, N422,166:66.

    • South-East demands rotational presidency, legislative seats reserved for women

    • Southwest demands six new states; Lagos renews agitation for listing of 37 LCDAs

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said that the review of the 1999 Constitution embarked upon by the 10th National Assembly will guarantee the evolution of a more just, united and forward looking federation.

Akpabio made the remarks while declaring open the South-South Zonal Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

The exercise held simultaneously in five geopolitical zones across the country.

A statement by the Special Assistant on Media/Communication to the Senate President, Anietie Ekong, quoted Senator Akpabio to have said: “Today’s event is not merely a formality. It is a democratic rite—a solemn moment in which the people, not politicians alone, speak into the soul of the nation.

“It is an affirmation that in a democracy, every voice counts.

“Let us not forget that democracy is a work in progress. No constitution is eternal in its original form, and no democracy is perfect—because man himself is not perfect.

“But it is in our collective pursuit of perfection—that more perfect union—that the true beauty of democracy lies.

“Therefore, the review of our Constitution is not a sign of weakness but of strength. It is not a complaint against the past, but a commitment to the future.

“We amend not to abandon but to realign—to adapt our national charter to the changing realities, dreams and demands of the good people of Nigeria.

“Every Nigerian is a stakeholder in Nigeria’s democracy. This public hearing is a testament to the Senate’s unwavering belief that truth emerges not from silence but from dialogue; not from monologue but from the aggregation of honest opinions.

“That is why we are here—not as party men, but as patriots. Not as political actors, but as nation-builders,” he said.

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, said the Constitution review was an important moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey that must lead to a restructuring of the country.

He was represented by the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi.

According to Pastor Eno, “this zonal public hearing is not a mere procedural step in legislative activity. It is, in truth, an important moment in our democratic journey.

“The scores of constitution alteration bills across 13 thematic areas—painstakingly curated by the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, speak to some of the most urgent and persistent questions about the structure, efficiency, equity and future of our federal union.

South-East demands rotational presidency, legislative seats reserved for women

Also, the people of the South-East have demanded a constitution that allows rotation of presidency and grant full autonomy to local government in the country.

They made the request during the South-East Zonal Public Hearing on Review of the 1999 Constitution, organised by the Senate yesterday in Enugu.

Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah, noted that the concept of rotational presidency was paramount to the Southeast.

The governor said the state believed that adopting a rotational presidency among the six geopolitical zones would provide every region, including the Southeast, a fair chance at the highest office in the country.

Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, added that the idea would foster a greater sense of belonging and national unity.

“Similarly, we propose that governorship should rotate among senatorial zones and legislative seats among constituencies, ensuring broader representation and participation at all levels of governance.

“To further enhance inclusivity, particularly for women, we propose legislative seats. We advocate for one additional Senate seat per state for women and two additional House of Representatives seats per state.

“As a state, we advocate for three additional assembly seats per state for women.

“This measure will significantly boost gender parity and ensure active participation of women in governance and in decision-making processes,” Mbah said.

The governor also called for institutionalization of local government councils as a truly autonomous form of government team.

Mbah equally called for legislative powers, enhancements, and fiscal reforms that would devolve more powers and resources to the states.

He stressed that the current concentration of power at the centre, a legacy of military rule, had stifled the growth and development of sub-national entities.

“A true federal system requires that states are autonomous entities with sufficient powers and resources to positively impact the lives of their citizens,” he concluded.

On his part, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State called for creation of an additional state in the Southeast to make them at par with other geopolitical zones of the country.

Nwifuru, represented by the Speaker, Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Mr Moses Odunwa, also called for women inclusiveness and reserved political seats for women.

“If a particular seat has been designated for women, all the parties will feature women candidates to fill in the space,” he said.

The public hearing was attended by government officials, traditional rulers, NGOs and the Civil Society Organisations.

Southwest demands six new states; Lagos renews agitation for listing of 37 LCDAs

In the same vein, stakeholders including state governments, lawmakers across the six states in the Southwest zone, traditional rulers, civil societies, among others yesterday said the ongoing process of constitutional review must give Nigerians effective governance and true federalism.

They spoke in Lagos at the ongoing zonal Senate public hearing on constitutional review.

At the hearing, the Senate observed that previous amendments did not resolve several fundamental questions of governance affecting Nigeria.

The upper chamber noted that diverse initiatives it promoted to introduce state police; enshrine the roles of traditional institutions in the constitution and devolve more powers to sub national governments, among others, in the previous amendments did not secure two-third approval at the state assemblies.

Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Senator Barau Jibrin, who made the observations, said the need to continuously review the document is sacrosanct.

Represented by the Leader of the Senate and Vice Chairman on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele at the public hearing, Jubrin observed that previous amendments did not tackle several fundamental issues of national importance confronting the federation.

According to him, there was a need “to come up with a constitution that will address the fundamental issues confronting Nigeria.

“In response to the demands of Nigerians, the National Assembly has enacted five amendments to the Constitution, known as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Alteration Acts.

These amendments, he added, addressed various issues related to good governance, institutional strengthening, and national aspirations.

“However, several fundamental issues of national importance remain unresolved, requiring more than just routine law-making by the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.

“These issues continue to dominate public discourse with many Nigerians advocating for legislative action to address them.

“We received hundreds of memoranda addressing key issues that have not yet been resolved by the previous amendments, mainly due to a lack of national consensus and the evolving dynamics of modern governance.

He, thus, highlighted several fundamental issues that had not been decisively addressed to include electoral reforms and adjudication; judicial reforms focused on case management and administration; enhancement to local government administration, involvement of traditional institutions in contemporary governance, ensuring gender equity and inclusion in governance; devolution and distribution of powers and concerns related to security and policing, among others.

Jubrin added that the committee “has carefully reviewed and drafted all the memoranda that we have into bills. We are now presenting them to you all for further input and discussion.

“Here in the south-south, we look to this exercise not just with interest, but with hope—hope that this constitutional review process, will, far from being just another talk shop, move us closer to a federation that works for all, protects the rights of every citizen, empowers communities, and unlocks the full potential of states.”

Akpabio seeks increased investment in human capital development

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reiterated the need for greater investment in human capital development in the country.

Akpabio, represented by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, made the call in Abuja in his speech before declaring open a public hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, chaired by Senator Muntari Dandutse.

    The session was meant to get the input of stakeholders on six bills namely: Federal University of Education (Special), Oyo (Establishment) Bill, 2024;

Federal University of Health Sciences, Funtua, Katsina State (Establishment) Bill, 2024; Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State (Establishment) Bill, 2024; Federal University of Geomatics, Oyo, Oyo State (Establishment) Bill, 2025; Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Yaba, Lagos State (Establishment) Bill, 2025 and Federal University of Technology, Omoku, Rivers State (Amendment) Bill, 2025.”

Akpabio noted that the country is at a pivotal point in its development journey and as such, more investments were needed in the education sector.

“Our population continues to grow, and so must our investments in human capital,” he said.

He said that the universities of technology, health sciences, education, and vocational studies were instrumental in preparing a workforce that was capable of driving innovation and delivering essential services and transforming the nation’s economic fortunes.

“The inclusion of specialised institutions like the proposed University of Education (Special), Oyo and the University of Geomatics highlights our intention to cater to specific educational and developmental needs,” he said.

Akpabio added that the task before the Senate was to ensure that these institutions, once established, are not only sustainable but also adequately funded.

“And also effectively governed, and tailored to meet the dynamic needs of the 21st-century learner,” he said.

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Muntari Dandutse (APC-Katsina), sponsored the Federal University of Health Sciences, Funtua, Katsina State (Establishment) Bill, 2024.

Dandutse said that it was instructive to note that the conventional or mainstream medical practice was gradually being phased out with the advancement in science and technology.

“Also, the advent of Artificial Intelligence and the use of robotics are predominantly being deployed to handle sophisticated medical practices and procedures limiting the chances of medical practitioners.

“This is no doubt will invariably give rise to job losses in the near future,” he said.

He said that it was imperative that urgent and necessary steps were taken for Nigeria to align with the current global phenomena.

Senator Yunus Akintunde (APC-Oyo) sponsored the Federal University of Education (Special), Oyo Establishment Bill 2024 and Federal University of Geomatics, Oyo Establishment Bill 2024.

He said that the proposed establishment of the two universities constituted upgrades rather than establishments from the scratch.

Akintunde said that the Federal University of Education (Special), Oyo aims to provide a just, sound and robust educational system for all Nigerians, including those with disabilities.

“It is predicated on the availability of qualified and well-trained teachers to impart the required knowledge on the students.

“Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo is the only one of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa.

“Thus, the need to have a university in our educational sector that can cater for people with disabilities and continuously produce well-qualified and trained teachers as it is obtainable in other developed countries cannot be over emphasised, he said.

He added that there was an unbridled quest for special need education in Nigeria.

“The current administration in Nigeria has shown sufficient determination to commit adequate funds to critical sectors in nation building including education.

“The enactment of this bill will help not only to provide education access, but also reduce difficulties faced by people with disabilities in seeking university education in non-conducive conventional institutions,” he said.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has no plans to replace Governor Umo Eno as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 elections, contrary to speculations making the rounds.

This clarification was issued in a statement on Sunday by the Director General of the Progressives Media Network (APCMN), Otuekong Iniobong John.

The APCMN was reacting to a viral YouTube video by one Offiong Aqua, who alleged that Akpabio was working against Governor Eno’s re-election bid.

Describing the claims as false and malicious, the APCMN DG said the video was a calculated attempt to smear the image of the Senate President.

He also dismissed allegations in the video that Akpabio had previously used and abandoned key APC figures, including Senator John Akpanudoedehe, Nsima Ekere, and Chief Don Etiebet.

John reaffirmed Akpabio’s loyalty to the current political structure in Akwa Ibom and his commitment to the success of both Governor Umo Eno and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Senator Akpabio remains focused on strengthening the party and supporting the reelection of performing leaders, not disrupting the existing political arrangement,” the statement read.

The statement reads in parts, “The APCMN is compelled to respond to the malicious and baseless fabrications by Offiong Aqua on YouTube, aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

“Contrary to Aqua’s false claims, Senator Akpabio has no plans to field any candidate against Governor Umo Eno in the next election cycle. We affirm that the Senate President is totally committed to the re-election of the governor for a second term.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shares the same commitment, and there are no plans for a single term in Akwa Ibom State. We challenge Offiong Aqua to provide evidence of the person Senator Akpabio is allegedly preparing to field against Governor Umo Eno.

“The truth is, Governor Umo Eno will be overwhelmingly re-elected by the Akwa Ibom people on the platform of the APC in the next election cycle

“Furthermore, we find it utterly insulting for Offiong Aqua to insinuate that our Governor, Pst Umo Eno, is demoralised. On the contrary, our governor is doing exceedingly well, and our people are thrilled with his exemplary leadership and remarkable achievements.

“His commitment to the progress and development of Akwa Ibom State is unwavering, and we have every confidence in his ability to deliver another term of outstanding service.

“Additionally, we categorically refute the claims that Senator Godswill Akpabio used and dumped Obong Nsima Ekere, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, and Chief Don Etiebet.

“It is a natural occurrence in politics for individuals to agree or disagree based on interests and ambitions, and this does not necessarily imply exploitation or abandonment. We urge Offiong Aqua to desist from peddling false narratives aimed at stirring up unnecessary controversy”.
