Is this Emmanuel’s final onslaught against Akpabio?

Governor Udom Emmanuel has been waging a closet battle against his predecessor, the man he describes as his ‘great teacher,’ the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio for a while now. But events shaping up around the upcoming local government elections suggest that for the governor the gloves are all off for the final demolition work on Akpabio.

Sources close to Udom’s inner circle told this reporter that the governor’s plan is to have an all-exclusive local council leadership that is made in his image and likeness, without any iota of doubt as to where their loyalty lies. The idea is to do away with a situation where some of the leaders at the grassroots would retain loyalty to Akpabio.

To help Udom achieve this grand design against Akpabio is the governor’s political structure called Transformation, which has the governor’s man Friday, Ephraim Inyang, commissioner for works, as the guy who calls the shots. As we write all roads lead to Udom’s country home in Awa for office seekers and influence peddlers at the grassroots-the way it used to be for Ukana Ikot Ntuen when Akpabio was governor.

The job of the Transformation structure is to vet and ensure that only Udom’s diehard loyalists get the nod to contest and be elected chairs of the 31 local councils in the state. They would then work as Udom’s field commanders for his reelection bid in 2019.

Things are not going the governor’s way without a fight, though. Leading the opposition to the governor’s total takeover strategy are Monday Eyo Okon, popularly called Murray; Idong Ituen Aniekan, Udo Kirian Mark, who are all members of the State House of Assembly, and Mike Enyong, a member of the House of Representatives, apparently representing the remnants of Akpabio’s troops in the battle field. They are the naysayers and are insisting on an open political space, arguing that such would ensure internal democracy as was widely preached at the reconciliation convention of the PDP in Abuja earlier in the month. The naysayers have held meetings with Akpabio and Senator Albert Akpan (OBA), both of who appear to have encouraged the putative opposition group. Pundits suggest that they intend to oppose Udom for the PDP ticket with a candidate of their own.

Things are only just about coming to a head, but Governor Udom Emmanuel’s gripe against his benefactor, Godswill Akpabio became a public spectacle the day the governor held his first thanksgiving service after he was sworn into office. On that day in an open church the governor brought out a bottle of water and sprinkled it as he declared himself the spiritual leader of Akwa Ibom State. Those familiar with spiritual issues say that Udom was performing an assignment with the water episode at the thanksgiving, and that the assignment was to neutralize whatever spiritual bondage he had ensnared himself in (at the hands of his great teacher) on his way to power. Ever since, to the discerning, Udom’s every action has been to minimize and humiliate Akpabio.

Governor Udom Emmanuel campaigned for power on the platform of continuity. Throughout the campaigns he constantly told Akwa Ibom people to elect him governor so that he would continue with the “good works Akpabio is doing.”

Most people, including yours truly, understood him to mean that if he were elected governor, he would continue with and complete the projects Akpabio could not complete because of time and/or money.

Such projects include the Tropicana Entertainment Centre, the Ibom Airport MRO, international terminal building and the taxiway; the e-Library (which has actually become a white elephant), the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene-Aba Road, the 20th Anniversary Specialist Hospital, which was not ready though it was commissioned; the 4-Point Hotel in Ikot Ekpene; Etebi-Enwang Road, Enen Nsit Road, etc.

A fortune from the state treasury had been spent on these projects before the contractors stopped work on them. In keeping with his campaign rhetoric that his government would be a continuation of the Akpabio administration, the expectation was that Governor Udom Emmanuel would simply start from where former Governor Godswill Akpabio stopped with respect to the ongoing projects.

But more than 2½ years into the Udom Emmanuel administration, it has become obvious that there is not even a pretense at continuity by the current government with regard to uncompleted projects started by Akpabio in the state, which would now have to be treated as abandoned projects.

So, why has Udom Emmanuel turned his back on the legacy of his great teacher? Many critics would be quick to rush to the easy conclusion that the governor is not up to the job; charitable commentators would blame paucity of funds.

Neither of these explanations would be correct. If the governor wants to get a job done, he would get it done. See the speed at which he built his personal palatial mansion in Awa, his village in Onna local council area, within a few months of assuming office as governor. The excuse of lack of funds is really a gratuitous insult to the intelligence of Akwa Ibom people.

The state has not suffered too much in terms of revenue receipt since Udom Emmanuel came into office. The reason for this is not hard to grasp. Unlike other oil producing states whose derivation revenues have been cut from both ends of the value chain-production volume and sales revenue-Akwa Ibom has suffered basically only from a cut in sales revenue because our production volume has not been disrupted, mercifully, either by sabotage or natural causes.

We are still the top earner from federal allocation. Revenue from all sources that have hit the state treasury since Udom Emmanuel came into office amount to N500 billion. So money is not the problem, which explains why the governor wants to build a N9.1 billion second official lodge in Lagos and is out and about in market places throwing cash around in a manner never seen in the history of political rascality in Nigeria.

This is really why Udom Emmanuel has turned his back on Akpabio. A decision was taken early on in the current administration to erase Akpabio’s influence in the state and shift the locus of power and influence from Ukana Ikot Ntuen in Essien Udom local government area to Awa in Onna local council area. Udom is from Awa in Onna while Akpabio is from Ukana Ikot Ntuen in Essien Udim. In the reasoning of Udom’s strategists, continuing with the uncompleted projects initiated by Akpabio would keep the man in the limelight and continue to give him credit for the development of the state. The best way to eclipse a political opponent is to cut off the oxygen of publicity from him and thus deny his political existence, Udom’s strategists seemed to have reasoned. But who loses in the end as these projects are abandoned? It is Akwa Ibom people. Thus, Udom’s efforts to humiliate his great teacher are at the expense of Akwa Ibom people.

This policy of “Let’s beat Akpabio to the ground” does not show up only in the abandonment of projects, but also in personnel deployment and exercise of power within the administration. A good illustration in this regard is what has happened to the office of the Secretary to the State Government. The current occupant of that office, once so powerful, Sir Etekamba Umoren, recently complained to a friend that the office now exists only in name, a mere formality, divested of all power. Sir Etekamba was reported to have said he does not even see key memos on policy issues.

The reason Sir Etekamba is not allowed to wield the power and influence traditionally associated with the office of the SSG is that he is an Akpabio man. A decision to neutralize him by taking all the power away from his office is seen by the Udom administration apparatchiks as less problematic compared with kicking him out of the government. Such frontal attack would rile the Lion of Ukana and possibly provoke a political backlash, hence the decision to keep the form and take away the substance.

Other efforts aimed at erasing Akpabio’s place in the state have been less strategic but no less humiliating. An example of the mundane type to take down the former governor was Udom’s instruction that Akpabio should not be allowed to use the state official aircraft. On the day the instruction was implemented, Akpabio had informed the pilot that he should get the plane ready for a trip by the former governor and his wife. On getting to the airport Akpabio discovered that there was no crew to operate the plane. He called the pilot, but the man asked Akpabio to call Udom for authorization. Akpabio tried several times to reach the governor but his lines were switched off for the day.

Akpabio got the message and travelled by road to Port Harcourt to board a commercial flight.

As Udom polishes his game plan against his great teacher, the final humiliation of the Senate Minority Leader in the hands of his hand-picked successor may be just days away.

The battle we fought was not for PDP alone – Makarfi

Leaders and key stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are excited over yesterday’s victory of the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee at the Supreme Court.

After consultations, the stakeholders declared that with the victory over Sheriff, the PDP is poised to reclaim the presidency in 2019.

Describing the victory as one for democracy and the people, Makarfi said it also signified the supremacy of party men and women to decide their destiny.

Said he: “This victory is not just for PDP; it’s for democracy. This affirms the powers of political parties. This affirms the powers of the convention of all political parties.

“The battle we fought was not a battle for PDP alone. It was a battle for democracy; it was a battle for supremacy of party men and women to decide their destiny. And it’s a battle to do away with dictatorship in political parties and this will never repeat itself.

“We thank the rest of party men and women across Nigeria for their loyalty and steadfastness. We must thank and appreciate the judiciary for the wonderful job it has done. We never lost faith in the judiciary. We have always been saying that ultimately justice will be done.”

Makarfi said the party’s doors would remain open for reconciliation with Sheriff and other aggrieved members, including those that dumped the PDP during the crisis.

“We must be open to reconciliation. But there’s a caveat: reconciliation does not mean we take what belongs to people and give it to you. Reconciliation must be based on equity, equality, and values.

“With this caveat, we should be prepared and willing to reconcile with everybody. Anybody that can meet these criteria, we should be willing and open to reconciliation with such a person no matter who they are.

“And I assured you that those who have been waiting for this judgment were not just PDP. The whole of Nigeria today was waiting for this judgment. And the eagle has landed.

“We are going to consult within the next two to three days. And come up with a programme of meetings between  Monday and  Tuesday. And these meetings will include Expanded Caucus, BoT and NEC so that we can take some far-reaching decisions on how to take the party forward,” Makarfi added.

He called on Muslims and Christians to continue to pray for ailing President Muhammadu Buhari and PDP BoT Chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin, who suffered a stroke about two days ago.

To Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, the judgment has placed the party in good stead to return to power in 2019.

According to him, the party would make maximum use of its resurgence. Power, he said, has remained dormant under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    Fayose

He chided the ruling party for what he described as its inability to sustain the power given to it by Nigerians in the 2015 elections, saying “today is a new dawn for Nigeria”.

Fayose, who spoke in Abuja after the judgment, said governance would take its rightful place under the leadership of the PDP.

The governor also said the Makarfi camp would not engage Sheriff and his loyalists in any further struggle, but efforts would be made to reconcile them with the new leadership.

Fayose pleaded for unity and cooperation with the Makarfi leadership. He cautioned against mutual suspicion and mistrust that triggered the crisis in the first place.

Said he: “I urge us to support the Makarfi-led committee. The committee cannot please all of us. So please, let us stop suspecting ourselves. Some will lead, some will follow. So let’s give the committee support.”

Former ministers described the judgment as one of the most celebrated cases in the nation’s history.

Addressing reporters in Abuja, the chairman of the Forum Tanimu said: “The judgment is hope for democracy. The opposition will continue to survive. Without opposition, those in government won’t be able to sit up and do the work that is expected of them.”

    Akpabio charges on patriotism

Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, has felicitated with Christians across the country on the occasion of the Easter festivity.
He called on them to imbibe the lessons of love and sacrifice, which Christ’s death and resurrection symbolise.
The former Akwa Ibom governor charged Nigerians to emulate Christ by not only loving others but also by loving their country and continuing to seek its progress and well-being as patriotic citizens.
The Akwa Ibom North-West senator, in an Easter message by his media aide, Jackson Udom, maintained Nigerian leaders and followers alike must make sacrifices and continue to pray to God to guide the ship of the country to its fair haven.
“Easter is symbolic for the quintessential lessons it teaches on the love of God for humanity and the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on the cross.
“These lessons should also spur us all to love one another and be ready to make sacrifices for the well-being of others and our fatherland, Nigeria.”

  • We will rescue Nigeria from APC – PDP

We will rescue Nigeria from APC – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to “rescue” Nigeria from what it described as the incompetence of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019.

The party stated this on Thursday in Abuja during its expanded caucus meeting, attended by some of its governors and other key stakeholders.

Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, set the ball rolling when he declared that about 20 serving senators of the ruling APC would be joining the PDP in the days ahead.

Also, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, said those that defected from PDP to APC in the South East have no electoral value and that they are joining the APC for contracts and employment opportunities.

“For my brothers and sisters from the South East who are defecting from PDP to APC, our people know the electoral value of each and everyone of us.

“We should allow them get the contract they are looking for and to get employment they are looking for. At the appropriate time we will know who is who in the South East. There is nothing to worry about, we are completely in control,” Ekweremadu stated.

The party leaders said they are repositioning the PDP to be much more vibrant to play the role of main opposition party in the country.

Two governors and six deputy governors, as well as members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Assembly caucus attended the meeting.

The meeting, which was presided over by Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, witnessed a large turnout of members.

The Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, Mr. Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, said the entire country is tired of the APC and are yearning for another change.

  • G-77 Forum not formed to confront Buhari – Akpabio

Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday said the G-77 Senators’ Forum was not formed to confront President Muhammadu Buhari.

He also noted that the group said to comprise mainly first time Senators was not initiated to tackle old senators.

Akpabio, who stated this at a press briefing after a meeting of the group in Abuja, said that although it is true that G-77 Senators was formed, the purpose was to deepen democracy and ensure good governance.

The former Akwa Ibom governor noted that rather than confront President Buhari as erroneously assumed in some quarters, the group will support the President to actualize his dreams for the country.

He noted that apart from working to deepen democracy, the group was formed to shore up the dwindling image of the Senate.

He said, “It is not meant to confront Mr. President or to confront old Senators. There is nothing like that. It is true that G-77 Senators emerged but it is not to confront anybody.”

He urged Christians to imbibe Christ’s qualities of love and sacrifice.

He noted that “together in unity, we can overcome challenges facing our country”.

“And to achieve that unity, there must always be love among us, irrespective of our religious, ethnic or political differences,” the Senate Minority leader said.

Obasa urged Nigerians to see the Easter period as an opportunity to increase their efforts at showing love and promoting peace among mankind.

The Speaker, in his Easter message, urged Nigerians not to relent in supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) governments at the centre and state levels in their efforts to put in place programmes and measures to improve the standard of living of Nigerians.

Obasa, in a message by his Chief Press Secretary, Musbau Rasak, urged Nigerians, particularly Christians, to emulate Jesus Christ, who, he said, through his love for mankind decided to sacrifice his life for people to live.

“Easter is a period to share love and promote peace. Jesus Christ lived and died for peace and love to reign and we can emulate the exemplary life of Christ by becoming promoters of peace and love.

“No society achieves greatness and growth in the absence of love and peace, hence, the need for us to continue to show love and spread peace among ourselves ,” the Lagos Assembly Speaker said.

He urged Nigerians to rededicate themselves and redouble their efforts at supporting and cooperating with the President Muhammad Buhari administration and the Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led government.

“Government alone cannot revive the country. We need your support and cooperation always because in salvaging this country from the past maladministration, all hands must be on deck,” he said.

Nigerians must continue to live in harmony and love, Senate Minority Leader Godswill Akpabio has stated.

In an Easter message by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio maintained that the essence of Easter “is about love and the sacrificial death of Christ. It is about showing love to others and living lives worthy of emulation.”

He urged Christians to imbibe Christ’s qualities of love and sacrifice.

The former governor charged Nigerians to, as a part of their sacrifices, pray for Nigeria and continue to seek its progress.

  • Akwa Ibom ’ll remain PDP’s stronghold, says Akpabio

Akwa Ibom ’ll remain PDP’s stronghold, says Akpabio

Senate Minority Leader and former governor of Akwa Ibom  State Godswill Akpabio has said that  the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will produce the  governor in 2019.

He spoke at the recent rally held in his honour and his successor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, by the people of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District.

Akpabio said: “When I came to you in 2006, I told you Godswill should be done and you the people of Akwa Ibom agreed with me and Godswill was done. In 2011, I said Godswill should be done again, you agreed with me and it was done.  In 2015 I pleaded with you to allow Godswill to be done again and again, you all made it happen. I will come back to you in 2019 and demand that Godswill should be done again, and again and again and I know it will happen”

He spoke on the All Progressive Congress (APC) over its loss at the Supreme Court, saying that the party demanded judgment, instead of justice, which is basic rights of citizens.

While lauding the Supreme Court for transparency, justice and fairness, he said the court demonstrated boldness in its push for the independence of the judiciary. He also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for providing the Supreme Court a conducive judicial atmosphere for the discharge of its duties.

“I also acknowledge the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Gen. Buhari, for not meddling with or interfering in the Supreme Court judgment which has been the most transparent in recent times”, he said.

Akpabio said the turbulent days of political warfare in Akwa Ibom State had been gone and urged the people of Ikot Ekpene senatorial district to support the government of Emmanuel to ensure continuity with the uncommon transformation of Akwa Ibom State.
