Kano APC chieftain begs Akpabio, Barau over $10m bribery allegation

A Kano-based chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mal. Alwan Hassan has apologised to the leadership of the Senate for wrongfully accusing them of receiving $10 million to stall the confirmation of Ramat Abdullahi as the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

He particularly apologised to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and his Deputy, Senator Barau Jibrin, admitting that the allegation against them and the leadership of the upper chamber of the National Assembly was “not only untrue but also unfair and uncharitable to both the National Assembly and its leadership.”

Last month, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sent a letter to the Senate seeking Ramat’s confirmation as NERC’s chairman, but after over a month since the letter was read and deliberated upon at plenary, the Senate is yet to announce the confirmation of the nominee.

The development led to a group of party loyalists from Kano State staging a protest at the National Assembly, while several individuals demanded immediate confirmation of Ramat.

Hassan, who joined others to protest the delay, accused the Senate leadership of deliberately stalling the confirmation.

Tendering an unreserved apology at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Hassan said his earlier action was propelled by the information available to him at that time, adding that he has since found out that the allegation lacked fact.

According to him, “I referenced a claim alleging that they received $10 million in bribes to stall Engr. Ramat’s confirmation. That allegation came from conversations I had while trying to understand the issues.

“I have since come to realise that the claim was not only untrue but unfair and uncharitable to both the National Assembly and its leadership.

“I therefore retract that statement fully and unreservedly, and I apologise to the National Assembly and its leadership for those accusations.

“I understand the seriousness of governance, particularly the critical role the parliament plays in our democracy,” he added.

The APC leader then appealed to the Senate to confirm Ramat for the job as requested by President Tinubu.

“I understand the seriousness of governance, particularly the critical role the parliament plays in our democracy. I do not take that role for granted. And it is precisely because of that respect that I once again, like Oliver Twist, appeal—humbly and sincerely—to the good conscience of our distinguished National Assembly to please take a second look at the case of Engr. Ramat Abdullahi and confirm him.

“I genuinely believe he is a worthy leader who can help transform the regulation of Nigeria’s energy sector,” he concluded.

Akpabio, Mark, Obi, Shehu mourn media icon Dan Agbese

Tributes have poured in for veteran journalist and co-founder of Newswatch magazine, Chief Dan Agbese, who passed on yesterday.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, his predecessor, David Mark, former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, former presidential media aide, Mallam Garba Shehu, and Mohammed Haruna said Agbese would be missed.

They spoke glowingly of the seasoned media icon, who died at 81.

Akpabio described Agbese’s death as “a monumental loss to Nigeria’s journalism family and to all who value truth, integrity, and courageous storytelling.”

In a condolence message by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate president expressed profound sorrow at the departure of “a media icon whose pen never wavered in defence of the public interest.”

He noted that the late Agbese belonged to a generation of journalists whose work defined an era and set the good standard for ethical, fearless, and professional journalism in Nigeria.

Akpabio said: “On behalf of the National Assembly, my family, and the good people I represent, I deeply mourn the loss of Chief Dan Agbese – a distinguished journalist who devoted his life to the pursuit of truth, accountability and press freedom.

“His writings shaped national conscience, challenged power, and illuminated the path of democracy. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of journalists yet unborn.”

Akpabio extended his deepest condolences to the Agbese family, his friends and the entire media community, noting that the void created by his passing will be felt across newsrooms and editorial boards nationwide.

He also commiserated with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), describing “this moment as a shared grief for all who believe in the critical role of journalism in nation-building.

Mark, who is the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), expressed deep grief.

He described the passing of Agbese as a personal loss, noting that he has lost “a brother and a pathfinder of enormous value. The Nigerian media fraternity has been thrown into deep mourning following the passing of one of its finest professionals, Editor Dan Agbese, whose transition marks the end of an era defined by integrity, fearlessness, and an unwavering commitment to the truth.

“Editor Agbese was more than a newsroom leader. He was a national asset whose pen shaped public discourse, elevated journalistic standards, and inspired generations of young reporters across the country.

“His career was distinguished by excellence, depth, fairness, and courage, earning him a revered place among Nigeria’s most respected media icons.”

Describing Agbese’s death as a monumental loss not only to journalism but to the entire nation, Mark said: “At a time when truth and accountability are more vital than ever, Nigeria has lost a voice that consistently stood for justice, ethical reporting, and national unity.”

Ex-Presidential candidate Obi said Agbese was a consummate columnist, a remarkable journalist, and a passionate advocate for a better Nigeria.

He stated on X: “Throughout his life, he tirelessly worked to highlight the challenges facing our nation and inspired many with his vision for progress and good governance.

“He also contributed immensely to journalism through robust engagements and the mentoring of younger colleagues.

“Mr Dan stood by me during the electioneering period, lending his voice and pen in support of my efforts to serve the people.

“His commitment to truth, integrity, and the development of Nigeria will be sorely missed.

“May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may God grant comfort and strength to his family, colleagues, and all who were touched by his work.”

One of Agbese’s co-founders at the Newswatch Yakubu Mohammed expressed shock at the death of Agbese, describing it as loss of a colossus, who has been into writing since the 60s.

“He was a writer, author and guiding light for those behind him,” he said.

Shehu said the media has lost one of its brightest.

In a condolence to the family, Shehu, who was Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, said: “His reporting, commentary, and editorial leadership drew widespread interest and admiration because he possessed a deep understanding of both local and international issues, coupled with an enviable knack of humour and incisive commentary. He was insightful and humble.

“As Chairman of the Northern Media Forum (NMF), he led with firmness, fairness, and candour, giving us a rare opportunity to interact periodically with him.

“Throughout this period, he remained a curious mind, always seeking to learn, with humility until his last days. His demise after a long illness has deprived the media community, nay the nation of a distinct voice which range from compelling newspaper columns, reaching so many followers over several decades.”

Until his death, Agbese was a renowned journalist and author, famous for his seminal contributions to journalism practice in Nigeria and for his satirical columns.

He was editor of The Nigeria Standard and New Nigerian newspapers, and General Manager of Radio Benue, Makurdi.

Agbese was one of the founders of the trail-blazing Newswatch magazine and was, until April 2010, its Editor-in-Chief.  Before his passing, he wrote several books and maintained weekly columns in notable newspapers, including the Daily Trust and The Guardian, while running a media consultancy with his friends and colleagues, Ray Ekpu, Yakubu Muhammed and Soji Akinrinade.

He is survived by wife Rose, six children and seven grand-children.

Born on May 12, 1944, Chief Agbese’s professional journey began at The New Nigerian and The Nigeria Standard, where he cut his teeth in reporting and editorial work.

But his defining career milestone came in 1984, when he joined Giwa, Ekpu and Mohammed to establish Newswatch, a weekly news magazine that became a model of investigative journalism in Nigeria.

Over the years, he held several leadership roles within the magazine, including managing editor, deputy editor-in-chief and editor-in-chief, helping to shape modern journalism.

A scholar of mass communication and journalism, the late Agbese earned degrees from the University of Lagos and in 1976/77. He went for a Master’s degree at the Graduate School of Journalism of Columbia University, New York City.

He was also a prolific author. Among his works include Nigeria Their Nigeria, Fellow Nigerians, The Reporter’s Companion, Style: A Guide to Good Writing, and The Columnist’s Companion: The Art and Craft of Column Writing, are considered essential reading for journalists and media practitioners.

In an interview, the late Agbese said of his love for publishing: “I had had a long association with book publishing from the period of my youth service in 1973/1974.

“I was a reader for Heinemann Educational Books in Ibadan, and so I picked up a lot of interest in writing books. And I had hoped that if I returned I would set up a book publishing company, but it didn’t work out that way.”

Akpabio: don’t fear with President by your side

    • Senate President, Yilwatda receive Senator, three Reps, others into APC
    • Cleric leads 3,000 to ruling party

It was a bumper weekend for the All Progressives Congress (APC) as thousands of politicians in Plateau and Akwa Ibom states dumped their parties and pitched their tent with the ruling party.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio assured the defectors that with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who he described as the “lion” beside them, there is no reason to fear.

The defectors in Plateau were received by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda.

Governors Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa) and Hyacinth Alia (Benue); Kogi State Deputy Governor Salifu Joel and House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu were also in the reception party at the Jos Polo field.

In Akwa Ibom, defectors numbering over 3,000 were received by the Finance Commissioner, Emem Bob; former House of Representatives member, Owoidighe Ekpoattai and other stakeholders of the party in the state.

Among the key defectors in Plateau State were the Senator  who represented Plateau North in the ninth National Assembly,  Istifanus Gyang and three serving members of the House of Representatives – Fom Dalyop (Riyom/Barkin Ladi Federal Constituency); Ajang Alfred Ilya (Jos South/Jos East Federal constituency) and Daniel Asama Ago

    (Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency).

Others included the Director-General of the campaign for PDP during the 2023 general election, Latep Dabang, and two former governorship candidates, Patrick Dakum of the Labour Party (LP) and Afred Dabwam of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).

Senator Akpabio, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the ceremony, said the coming of Prof. Nentawe as the APC national chairman had brought good fortune to the party in Plateau State.

The Senate President added in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media/Communication, Anietie Ekong, that going by the calibre of the defectors, Plateau was in the kitty of APC ahead of the 2027 polls.

He said: “We have received political caterpillars, including several governorship candidates, in the last election.

“We have also received the Director-General of PDP campaigns in the last election, several serving and former members of the National Assembly and their supporters.”

Akpabio appreciated President Tinubu for finding a man of valour, a man of integrity and a man of dignity, Prof. Yilwatda, to become the APC national chairman.

He added: “You can see that he (Yilwatda) has delivered Plateau State to the APC before the elections. When you are escorted by a lion like President Tinubu, you have nothing to fear.”

Akpabio assured the people of the state that their concerns as regards security were being addressed by the President.

“I cry whenever anybody is killed in the Plateau. The state is looking for peace, and President Tinubu will deliver peace to Plateau State,” the Senate President said.

Akpabio frowned at the threats posed by reports of the alleged genocide in Nigeria, saying it all started in 2010.

“Most of the reports you are hearing, that they are using internationally, were reports prepared in 2010, at that time I was a governor and I know how people were being killed everywhere,” he said.

Akpabio stated that there was no doubt that people have been murdered and many displaced persons in their states.

He added: “We are calling on God the Almighty to help us at the centre to bring peace to Plateau. Anybody who will rule Plateau must be somebody committed to peace.

“This(APC) is the only party that cares for you. Change has come to Plateau.”

The Senate President stated that only Nigerians themselves can bring the desired peace to the country.

“I stand here representing the President, and to assure you that we will do everything possible to ensure that you have peace, it is not people outside that will come and give you peace.

“It is we that must have peace, we must live in peace with one another, Nigeria must have peace for progress to come,” he said.

Yilwatda said the day marked the final consolidation of APC dominance.

“Today on the Plateau, there is only one political party. If you are not in APC, you are not in politics.

“With this structure, with this firepower, Plateau will deliver President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

“All three Senate seats will be APC. All federal and state positions will be APC. The people have spoken: It is APC or nothing,” he said.

The defectors were presented with APC flags and symbols of the broom by the national chairman, who assured them of equal rights and privileges like other members of the party.

In Uyo, the General Overseer of His Divine Redeemed World Ministries, Elijah Jack, led over 3,000 members of different parties in Oniong East Ward 1, Onna Local Government to the APC

Jack said his decision to lead his supporters to the APC was to support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu and to ensure his re-election in 2027.

He added that he was going to begin a political and spiritual movement to win supporters for Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno.

E said: “My decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not driven by personal gain or political rivalry, but by a sincere desire to contribute more meaningfully to national unity, peace building, and inclusive governance.

“At this moment in our country, what Nigerians need most is not division but healing, cooperation, and collective action. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has clearly emphasised the Renewed Hope Agenda, which calls for unity, stability, and the integration of all citizens and regardless of party lines, into the national development process.”

Commissioner for Finance Bob described Jack as “a brother and friend whose capacity is beyond doubt”, adding that his move reflects Governor Eno’s deep-rooted goodwill in Onna.

Onna APC leader, Patrick Ifon, hailed the defection as a “landmark moment,” describing the new entrants as men and women of capacity.

2027: Be frank, truthful in your duty, Akpabio tells editors

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged editors to be guided by truth and integrity in carrying out their responsibilities of informing the public.

Akpabio spoke at the 21st All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) in Abuja.

Represented by the Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu, the Senate President said: “As 2027 approaches, will your pen be guided not by only passion but more by presence, fidelity to power, and by fidelity to truth? Stand firm.

“Speak honestly and frankly, and fearlessly. And correct, fearlessly too. For nations are not built by bricks and mortar; they are built by words that endure.

“Our democracy, like every democracy in the world, stands at the crossroads of renewal and all decay. It will endure, not by chance, but by choice.

“It’s up to the crowd, but by the conscience of those who earn the rewards that shape the crowd’s mind. An editor is not a bystander to history. He is its sculptor. With every line he asserts or rejects, he chisels the moral architecture of the nation. When he stands firm for truth, he builds.

“When he compromises, demolition occurs. The responsibility that rests on your great shoulders is not light. It is very heavy, as the bic with which you write.”

The Senate President also added: “You are the watchman of our democracy, the custodians of public conscience, and the keepers of the fragile flame of truth.”

The Senate President also paid a tribute to the courage and responsibilities carried out by the editors .

He said: “I commend the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) for your perseverance and patriotism. Year after year, you gather not to celebrate yourselves, but to strengthen the republic.

“You remind us that unity is not borne of uniformity but of understanding; that democracy is not sustained by elections alone but by the truth that gives those elections benefit.

“I leave you with this charge, and this is the charge: “Let truth be your sword. Integrity your shield. And courage your constant companion. Let the light of responsible journalism shine through the darkness of our own deceit. Consider her land, even though she may be the discoverer of better ideals and a common purpose.”

Senate denies plot to impeach Akpabio

The Senate on Wednesday dismissed as “false and mischievous” reports suggesting that there were moves among senators to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, who rose on the floor of the Red Chamber to address the matter, said the report was a complete fabrication aimed at creating unnecessary tension within the upper legislative chamber and misleading the public.

He explained that the rumour was triggered by a statement allegedly credited to former Abia State Governor and Chairman of the Senate Committee on South East Development Commission, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, but which was later found to have been taken out of context.

“His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, was said to have made certain remarks that were misinterpreted,” Bamidele said.

“I reached out to him personally, and from our discussion, it was clear that he was quoted out of context.”

He stressed that at no time was there any discussion, formal or informal, about removing Senator Akpabio from office.

“There was no attempt or discussion among any of our colleagues about the possibility or otherwise of removing His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, as President of the Senate,” he said.

“We are not taking this misinformation for granted because it was clearly intended to cause distraction and confusion in the minds of the public.”

He added that senators across party lines remained united behind Akpabio’s leadership and were focused on delivering on their legislative responsibilities.

“At this time, we are fully united behind our President of the Senate,” he continued.

“There is no tension in this chamber, no division, and certainly no reason to contemplate the removal of any of our presiding officers.”

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over plenary, commended the Senate Leader for the clarification, urging Nigerians to disregard the reports.

“Thank you, our capacity leader, for this clarification,” Barau said. “All and sundry should please take note.”

Akpabio charges sports administrators on grassroots development

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged football administrators to engage in talent hunts at the grassroots level to discover budding stars who will represent Nigeria in the future.

He assured that modalities would be put in place to make the Senate President’s U-18 Unity Cup a yearly tournament where budding talents would be discovered and nurtured to bring back the glory days of Nigerian football.

Akpabio made this known on Sunday as the second edition of the 10th Senate President’s U-18 Unity Cup commenced in Abuja.

Twenty-one teams, comprising 16 male and five female teams, cut across the country and arrived in the nation’s capital, Abuja, on Saturday ahead of the competition, which kicked off on Sunday at the Old Parade Ground, Garki, Abuja.

Represented by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Sports Development, Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi,  Akpabio described the young players as future stars who would go on to represent the country at both continental and world football competitions.

According to the Senate President, sports and football in particular cannot grow if the grassroots is neglected.

He said, “With these young men showcasing their talents, this is the future of Nigeria, and there is no way you can grow sports if we don’t go to the grassroots.

“In times past, the Late Keshis, the Okochas, the Kanus, the Amokachis, the Ikpebas, and the Tijani Babangidas, who brought glory to Nigeria, were discovered in these kinds of tournaments.

“I have seen tremendous signal from President Bola Tinubu in putting sports on the front burner, therefore sports administrators must key into this opportunity that the President has shown in the last two years. It should not be business as usual,” he said.

Akpabio commended the Grassroots Sports Federation (GRASOF) for their tireless efforts in organising the competition and described the tournament as an opportunity to develop the sports sector, so that the future for the young football talents would be brighter.

In his welcome remarks, Tournament Coordinator, Hon. John Bassey Ekpenyong, expressed gratitude to Senator Akpabio for recognising the importance of such competitions to the development of youths and the sports sector.

“We believe that with your leadership, this tournament can become a flagship event for the Senate, inspiring and empowering Nigerian youth for years to come.”

In the opening game, the Jaguar Football Club of Abia state saw off Amahus Football Club of Yobe one goal to nil.

Senate President Akpabio petitions police over false report

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has petitioned the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to track down those behind a fake report credited to him as attacking United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump.

“Somebody will sit in the comfort of his room and produce a report, even fake pictures of 2023 when the Senate President with Senators visited Port Harcourt for a different event, and claim that I responded to President Trump. Who am I to answer President Trump?” Akpabio said.

“This time, the Senate President of Nigeria did not answer President Trump. The quotation was concocted to cause a diplomatic row. It is the Presidency that can respond officially to such matters,” he added.

Akpabio warned that such fake reports are capable of causing tension and damaging Nigeria’s international relations.

“I believe the Cybercrimes Unit of the Police, the DSS and others should find that character out, because it is meant to cause friction and put the Nigerian Senate in disrepute,” he said.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin threw his weight behind Akpabio, describing the false publication as an attack on Nigeria’s sovereignty and the integrity of its parliament.

  • Akpabio/Yilwatda’s challenge to govs/council chairmen

    Akpabio/Yilwatda’s challenge to govs/council chairmen

    • “As long as greed is stronger than compassion, there will always be suffering.”—Rusty Eric

Godswill Akpabio and Professor Nentawe Yilwatda recently stirred the hornets’ nest. The public was held in awe by the bluntness of their uttered words against the slow pace of effective governance at the subnational levels across the country.

By virtue of their vantage positions, no one should doubt the veracity of their revelations. What makes their spills startling is that most of those that were affected and exposed at the subnational levels were elected governors cum councils’ chairmen from same political party with them—be they old, new or aspiring defectors.

Akpabio and Yilwatda are not just ordinary Nigerians; one is the all powerful number three political figure anchoring the upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly in the country; the other is the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC).

Yilwatda’s party, in case of temporary amnesia by anyone, has become, for good or bad, the beautiful bride being courted by governors of states in Nigeria today as witnessed in the ongoing gale of defections. This development is reminiscent of the historical jostle for the partitioning of Africa by the European colonial powers. That is what APC has become in modern day politics of the country.

Pardon my temporary digression. The missiles fired by these two men should bother the privileged people in power that they were directed at. This is so if only for exposing the governors/chairmen’s mostly shambolic performances at states and local levels; and more importantly for the inciting weight of such observations by these two political leaders.

Yours sincerely is grappling with how best to fathom these two important men’s damning call-out of governors and councils’ chairmen largely believed to be members of their political party. They didn’t just say these but beckoned on their people to monitor and teach them consequential lessons where necessary.

Obviously, the governed, especially across the states and local council areas are displeased with the lackadaisical approach of their governors and councils’ chairmen in handling their infrastructural, institutional, and general wellbeing. Therefore, the timely reminders by these two significant figures in the nation’s body politic can’t just be waived aside.

The duo’s challenge that the state governors and local councils’ chairmen be held accountable for the rot in the states, despite increased revenue allocations under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration should not be taken with levity. Their words only bring to the fore, the silent truths that sub-national governments across the country are mostly known to have failed to translate recent higher statutory allocations into improved livelihoods, job creation and above all, tangible development.

Read Also: Peterside  calls for credible administrators in NFF

Kindly permit a scrutiny of what the duo said. For instance, Professor Yilwatda at the public presentation of a book titled: “Vicious Red Circle” authored by Alex Oriaku, enjoins Nigerians to demand people-oriented projects from their governors and local councils’ chairmen in view of the huge fiscal inflows currently accruing to the states/councils.

“No governor in Nigeria collects less than three times, up to four times what they used to collect before — none. Who knows that two years ago, there was a sharing of about N400bn per month—but today, the last sharing they did was N2.2tn…….I would say, talk to your governors. Talk to your local government chairmen. Let them do more.”

Good talk from Yilwatda but the national APC chairman seems to have discounted the fact that most of these governors and chairmen are deaf to reason and good judgment. They’re only aggressively agile on how to steal public funds, conceive defective policies and implement sub-standard and inflated projects. Of course, the governors and councils’ chairmen, with the current allocation largesse, are not letting their constituents feel the realistic and positive impacts of good governance.

To curb their excesses, Yilwatda as the national chairman of ruling APC has a critical role to play in ensuring that the right persons are allowed to emerge as candidates of his party in the upcoming general elections. This is the right template and the first step to take in ensuring transparency and accountability in governance of this era when the booming allocations do not positively reflect in the lives of ordinary citizens but more in the profligacy of public officers.

Most governors and chairmen who are misleading their people today and giving the federal government of President Tinubu bad name are products of misplaced political priorities by political parties. They see governance as business endeavours and not any conscientiously selfless service to the people.

Also, Yilwatda needs to drum into the ears of his party candidates at the subnational levels, the significance of having dedicated cardinal programmes from their party manifesto; and the need for uniform implementation across subnational levels. So far, virtually all the governors/chairmen don’t seem to know what the manifesto of their political party talks about. There’s no actual particular roadmaps in practice. They only do things that appear to them in their dreams while sleeping. This is responsible for the uncoordinated policies, planning and projects that reasonable Nigerians complain about in the life of this country.

The foregoing is not applicable to APC alone but to other political parties. Most elected officials on the platforms of all these political parties in the country know nothing about the cardinal programmes of their parties but are only interested in sustaining power and making money through whatever means from government. I recommend for Yilwatda, the late Pa Obafemi Awolowo’s Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) manifesto template to make his tenure more people-friendly and a politically correct system that his party can effectively monitor.

Except this existing detrimental system is corrected by Yilwatda, it might be difficult to envision any meaningful use of public funds at the subnational levels, especially.

Akpabio, on his part, also spoke candidly at the joint graduation ceremony of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) and the University of Benin. In clear language, he called on State Houses of Assembly to hold governors accountable for how they deployed their increased allocations.

Akpabio emphasises the need to “strengthen existing legal frameworks” necessary for the enhancement of “oversight responsibilities of public institutions to ensure that they deliver effective public service.”

Akpabio did not forget to self-commend the 10th National Assembly that he’s leading for having “contributed tremendously to increasing the revenue that accrues to the Consolidated Revenue Fund” which in turn has led to “higher revenue allocation to states and the federal government.” His clincher saw him beckon on the “state legislatures to ensure that the increased revenue to their governors/states translates to improved livelihood and job creation for citizens.”

Yilwatda, with his executive experience, calls for people’s vigilance over how governors spend their money while Akpabio, as a lawmaker and a former governor/minister, beckons on states’ legislatures to meticulously interrogate how the current increased allocations are being spent at the subnational levels.

Let it be known to Akpabio that one major problem draining the country of desired revenues is budget padding and projects’ costs inflation. Through these avenues, the country may not be able to effectively stem the tide of official corruption. While demanding funds accountability from the governors and councils’ chairmen, Akpabio should also quickly address these conduit pipes in public tills. Most legislators, unfortunately, live large from illegal proceeds of budget padding, inflation of projects’ costs and compromise in the discharge of their oversight responsibilities with a telling effect on the nation’s socio-economic development. Akpabio as senate-president, needs to do something to curb this legislative criminality.

In totality, the foregoing are largely responsible for the abysmal governance styles of governors/council chairmen in most states across the federation. And notwithstanding the excuses of Naira devaluation and accompanying inflation, governors’ preference for elephant projects which they financed with ill-advised foreign loans coupled with wanton corruption have denied the people the opportunity of having friendly, and beneficial policies/projects. These amongst others further throw the people into abject poverty and penury.

The final message: Eternal vigilance and effectively uncompromising regulatory systems are necessary tools to whip to line errant governors and councils’ chairmen seeing increased monthly allocations as largesse to be wasted. No more, no less!
