  • Akpabio swears in commissioners, adviser

    •Urges them on service delivery

Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio yesterday swore in commissioners and special advisers.

He urged them to reinvigorate and strengthen service delivery to the people.

Speaking at the event held at the Executive Council (Exco) Chambers, Governor’s Office, Uyo, Akpabio said: “What we have done today in bringing you into this Executive Council is to overhaul the wheel of the uncommon transformation of our state. This occasion therefore is a step in our efforts to reinvigorate and strengthen service delivery to the indigenes.”

He went on: “We have within the last six years built our state in line with the dreams of our forebears. We have come to a critical point in our journey as a state that demands that we introduce fresh hands into the affairs of governance. We have faith that this gesture will accelerate the tempo of the uncommon transformation of our state.

“Be reminded that we are a transformational government based on values, not ideology. We strive to provide leadership for all segments of our society. We are blind to politics of ethnicity and tribe in our governance of this state. You must, therefore, expand your perspective to embrace the state as a whole and see yourself beyond the narrow confines of your local government areas or tribes. You are not representing your local government in this exco; you are representing the state.”

Assembly hails Akpabio for fiscal discipline

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has hailed Governor Godswill Akpabio for his “fiscal discipline and commitment to the full implementation of the appropriation laws.”

The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, in a statement, said the commendation was contained in a letter to the governor after its deliberation on the 26 years of the creation of Akwa Ibom State and six years of Uncommon Transformation by the Akpabio administration.

According to him, the House in the letter conveying its resolution, also invited the governor to present an address on the affairs of the state.

He said the deliberation by the lawmakers as shown in the letter, signed by the Acting Clerk of the House, Mrs. Mandu Umoren, was sequel to the information brought under Matters of Urgent Public Interest by a member representing Nsit Atai State Constituency, Mrs. Sarah Elijah.

During the proceedings, Mr. Umanah said the letter indicates that Mrs. Elijah, who traced “the developmental strides of Akwa Ibom from creation, said since the emergence of Governor Akpabio in 2007, the state has witnessed multi-sectoral infrastructural development, with a candid agenda of continuity.”

  • Insecurity threatens our unity, says Akpabio

Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio has said insecurity is a threat to the nation’s unity and cohesion.

The governor urged Nigerians to liberate themselves from the scourge.

Akpabio spoke yesterday at the Uyo Sports Stadium during the Independence anniversary.

He said: “We must liberate ourselves from insecurity, which has become a threat to our unity and oneness. Violence is not a part of our national fabric; neither did it form a part of our noble and dignified struggle for independence.

“I urge Nigerians everywhere to stop the jarring sounds of bombs with harmonious songs of unity. Tears have no colour or tribe or ethnic group. When someone is killed or bombed in Kaduna, we cry in Akwa

Ibom; it’s not because we know who is killed but because we are involved in humanity: one man’s pain is another man’s tears.”

Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio yesterday inaugurated developmental projects worth billions of naira as part of the activities marking the 26th anniversary of the state’s creation.

Among the projects inaugurated by the governor are VIP Guest House, Uyo, 8.7 kilometres of internal roads in Akwa Ibom Polytechnic, Ikot Osorua, Cottage Hospital, Urua Inyang in Ika, 13.5 kilometres of roads in Mkpat Enin and Cottage Hospital, Okoroete in Eastern Obolo Local Government.

The projects were undertaken and completed by the government.

Inaugurating the VIP Guest House, Akpabio said the project, which is a 5-star project, was built by a five-star company, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.

The governor said: “We are building a sustainable development because the development of the state starts from infrastructure.”

At the inauguration of internal roads in Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Akpabio hailed Seyang Company on the handling of the road project, beautifying and controlling the flood in the school.

He also lauded the rector and the students that would benefit from the project.

The Rector, Israel Afia, who also spoke at the event, said he was grateful to the Akpabio administration for the wonderful transformation of the school. He described Akpabio as the best education-friendly governor in the country.

The Commissioner for Works, Don Etim, praised the Akpabio administration for developing the state.

He said the school was established in 1992 and was an eyesore before the intervention of Governor Akpabio.

The Managing Director of Seyang Limited, Mr. Samuel Inyang (an engineer), said the project was completed in December 2012.

According to him, the completed projects are 8.7km of roads (single and dual carriageways), 12 km of drainages, 7.75 km of service ducts for water and electricity, 7.6 km of walkways, 0.5 km of three major storm water out walls and modern solar-powered street lights.

  • Aggrieved governors agreed not to stop President, says Akpabio

Aggrieved governors agreed not to stop President, says Akpabio

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governor’s Forum and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, said yesterday that the aggrieved governors had agreed to drop their demand seeking to stop President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election in 2015.

Seven aggrieved governors – Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Abdulafatah Ahmed (Kwara), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Aliyu Wammako (Sokoto), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and Murtala Nyako (Adamawa) – on August 31, broke away from the main party to form the “New PDP” under the chairmanship of Kawu Baraje.

One of the demands of the aggrieved group is that Jonathan should drop his 2015 ambition.

But, reviewing with State House reporters over the Sunday night meeting between President Jonathan and the aggrieved governors, Akpabio said the issue was dropped because ambition is a personal thing to an aspirant.

He said: “That is why I said that the processes are on and, of course, on the issue of 2015, both sides agreed that it wasn’t an issue for discussion because every single person has a right to nurse ambition.”

“Some of the governors may have ambition, like I have ambition to go to the Senate and you can’t discuss anything about another person’s ambition. You are the only person that can discuss your own ambition. Ambition is personal. So both parties agreed to that,” he added

The other demands, including the removal of the party’s national chairman, Bamanga Tukur, and a presidential order stopping the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC’s) alleged witch-hunting would soon be resolved, according to Akpabio.

He said: “In all other issues, we have put in place methodologies of settling them and of course, it’s a process issue. Process is on. It was in the first place an internal issue of the PDP and so we are going to settle it internally and if you want to know how it is going to be settled, then you have to leave being a journalist to join the PDP family.”

On the peace process, he said: “Well. What you heard is true. The PDP family is coming back together. We have started a process of total reconciliation and, of course, you know the house is very large , very robust and PDP is very entrenched and there is no way we can have internal wrangling without being able to resolve. So, clearly speaking, it was just a family disagreement and the processes are in place now to bring everybody on board and Nigerians are very happy.”

He said that there was no specific conditions for the reconciliation as the issues involved differ from state to state.

He said: “The disagreement differs from state to state. So, it wasn’t as if there was a major issue with all PDP governors. There were few states that had difficulties. Some states complained about may be thier delegates were not allowed entry to Eagle Square; some complained about party positions and some had court issues. But these are all things that we cannot allow to affect the fabric of the party and, of course, by implication the fabric of the nation because the PDP is Nigeria.”

“We have been in power for the past 14 years and Nigerians have confidence that this is the only truly national party that expresses true aspirations of all and sundry and, of course, it is also the only party that is not owned by any individual. It’s a party that belongs to all Nigerians. Even the market woman in Sokoto claims ownership of the PDP and, of course, the same thing with the trader in Akwa Ibom state. The same thing with somebody in the Southwest and the same thing in Southeast. So, the PDP is Nigeria and so anything that affects the PDP will affect the entire country.”

  • ‘Aggrieved governors dropped demand on Jonathan’s re-election’

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governor’s Forum, Godswill Akpabio, on Monday maintained that the aggrieved governors have agreed to drop their demand seeking to stop President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election in 2015.

It would be recalled that seven aggrieved governors namely – Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Abdulafatah Ahmed (Kwara), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Aliyu Wammako (Sokoto), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and Murtala Nyako (Adamawa) broke away from the main party to form the “new PDP” headed by Kawu Baraje during the party’s mini convention on August 31.

One of the demands of the aggrieved group is that Jonathan should drop his ambition to contest the 2015 presidential election.

But speaking with State House correspondents over the Sunday night meeting between President Jonathan and the aggrieved governors, Akpabio said that the issue was dropped because ambition is a personal thing to any aspirant.

He said: “That is why I said that the processes are on and of course on the issue of 2015, both sides agreed that it wasn’t an issue for discussion because every single person has a right to have ambition.”

“Some of the governors may have ambition like I have ambition to go to Senate and you can’t discuss anything about another person’s ambition. You are the only person that can discuss your own ambition. Ambition is personal. So both parties agreed to that,” he added.

  • ‘Stop campaigns of calumny against Akpabio’

Akwa Ibom State indigenes have been warned to stop campaigns of calumny against Governor Godswill Akpabio.

The Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Mr. Enobong Uwah, gave the warning yesterday in Uyo.

He said there was no need for the uproar following the recent political decisions of the governor, which are routine.

Uwah decried a situation where some people felt they could hold the state to ransom and overheat the polity because their interests were not being served.

He said having worked closely with the governor, first as his special assistant on Protocol Matters, Abuja Liaison Office and now as a commissioner, he could vouch for his patriotism and unequalled love for the state and its people.

His words: “We all know those behind the orchestrated negative campaign against Governor Akpabio, which is sustained by a section of the partisan media.

We warn them to desist from the act.”

  • When Akpabio came under fire

    When Akpabio came under fire

SIR: Gov. Godswill Akpabio has done creditably well in his six years in office, and this is recognised nationwide with accolades and awards from different institutions, groups, traditional and political leaders.

But his power of hiring and equally firing is taking the shine off him of late. With the recent sack of his former Secretary to the State Government Obong Umana Okon Umana and last year’s sacking of his former Deputy Governor Nsima Ekere, all for allegedly nursing ambitions to inherit his hot seat. This has seen the Governor being criticised at various fronts. That reminds us of the proverbial saying that life is like a goalkeeper, people will hail and cherish you for the tremendous saves you have made, but the one silly mistake you make will be forever remembered and reference.
