Akpata stresses importance of women’s cricket dev’t

The Nigeria Cricket Federation has put together the maiden age-grade international tournament for the Women’s Under-19 national team, the  Nigeria-Ghana Under-19 Women Series.

The event is a four-team invitational event that kicked off on Sunday at the University of Lagos Cricket Oval. It parades Ghana’s Under 19 National Team, the South-West female team, a selected national Women’s team, and Nigeria’s Under 19 Women’s Team.

According to the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Uyi Akpata, the event is meant to test the federation’s development effort for women’s cricket.

“Apart from getting the Women’s Under 19 team in shape for the Division One World Cup Qualifier starting September 22nd in Kigali, this event allows us to test the depth of our Women’s development.  For the first time, we are parading three teams of national team quality and invited Ghana’s Under 19 Women to join.”

Akpata said that the strategic objective of the Federation is to attain gender equality in its developmental effort.

“We have had our school outreaches focused a bit more on girl-child initiatives and it has been yielding results. The impact is beginning to resonate for the country already,” he added.

The Female National Team put up a podium performance at the African Games in Accra earlier in March ahead of the Male team with a Bronze medal, justifying the investment in female Cricket development in the country.

“We now have a female Cricket League run in the South-South, with eight teams taking part and a fully functional Cricket facility inside an all-girl Iyoba College in Benin City, Edo State,” he  noted.

The on-going Nigeria-Ghana Under 19 Women Series complements these initiatives and also helps the national Under 19 Women’s team shape up for the World Cup Qualifier that is scheduled for September 22nd  to 29th  at the Gahanga Cricket Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda.

Nigeria has been drawn in Group B of the eight-team series that parades Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Malawi. Group A has Rwanda, Namibia, Uganda, and Kenya.

“Development is an ongoing process, carefully curating the process that produces and hones our players’ skill is key for us. Of course, we are looking forward to picking the World Cup ticket, but it will be better if we keep refining the process that produces and makes our players better.”

Appeal Court affirms Akpata as LP candidate

The Court of Appeal, Abuja has affirmed Olumide Akpata as the candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the forthcoming governorship election.

The court in its ruling dismissed a suit seeking to void the nomination of Akpata as the candidate of LP in the election scheduled for September 21.

The suit was brought to the court by Kenneth Imasuagbon who was also a contestant in the LP primary.

Aggrieved by the outcome of the party governorship primary, Imasuagbon went to the Federal High Court in Edo to challenge the process of the primary election.

However, the Judge, Babatunde Quadri, presiding over the case, dismissed the suit due to lack of merit.

In his ruling, Quadri stated that the plaintiff, Imasuagbon, failed to utilise the internal dispute resolution processes within the party before pursuing legal action.

Furthermore, the court determined that Imasuagbon’s claim regarding Akpata’s non-signing of the indemnity form was time-barred.

Imasuagbon, unhappy with the Federal High Court’s verdict, filed an appeal seeking a review of the decision.

Delivering judgement on Wednesday, September 11, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal unanimously upheld the lower court’s decision.

In the lead judgment, Okon Abang concurred with the lower court that Imasuagbon neglected to utilise the party’s internal conflict resolution mechanism.

Additionally, Abang ruled that Imasuagbon failed to present the disputed results of the February 23 primary election, which he claimed to have won.

Edo poll: Ighodalo, Akpata unfold agenda

The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State , Asue Ighodalo, and his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Olumide Akpata, have unfolded their manifestos on security, economy and education.

The candidates presented their blueprints for the transformation of Edo State at a town hall meeting organized by a socio- economic group of Edo professionals, Unuedo Renaissance. The event was held at the Black Diamond Hotel, Ozumba Mbadiwe, Lagos.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Mr. Monday Okpebholo, was absent. Speaking at the event, Akpata vowed to prioritize people’s welfare and ignite agricultural revolution in Edo State.

The candidate, a lawyer, expressed his deep commitment to improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians, emphasizing that governance should be centered around the needs of the people.

Akpata, who is the immediate past President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), stated that Edo has a debt profile of N600billion and questioned the current administration on what’s been done about the state’s debt profile.

“Edo State presently earns close to N17 billion monthly and our debt profile has ballooned to almost N600 billion as at today.

“In that current debt of the state, the present administration contributed about N400 billion. I am concerned about priorities and how we utilised what we had.

“In the last four years, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, Edo State has not attracted Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the last four years. This is verifiable.

“Edo State under me will ensure we create environment that would shore up our IGR (Internally Generated Revenue), and ensure the money works for the people without over borrowing”, he said.

Speaking on security he pledged his support for state policing and said: “Security is vital, however we must manage our realities. We need to work with the security on ground. I will support state police and we can directly move our resources to state police, fund them, that way we can get security working.

Drawing from a Benin parable, the candidate explained his motivation for entering politics: “If there is only one wealthy person in the family, we are all poor.”

He highlighted that this philosophy drives his desire to pull more people out of poverty, especially in a country where, he says, people have been removed from the equation of governance.

He criticized the current state of affairs in Nigeria, pointing to the recent protests as evidence of a nation sitting on a keg of gunpowder. The candidate expressed concerns about the high cost of living, citing the example of a bag of garri now costing N90,000.

He argued that without active participation in governance, the country risks further decline.

According to Ighodalo, security is a major foundation in reviving the economy in Edo State.

He said: “Security like politics, is local, vigilantes and other local security apparatuses must be empowered to properly secure the local communities.

“The problem with state policing was that it was mostly used by local leaders to their advantage to intimidate people from other political parties and that must change.

“In Edo, in the last years, kidnapping and other local crimes have decreased. We will work with the police, train them and get them to work for the state. There will be a lot of collaboration and this would make a difference. There must be a constitutional barrier so that state police are not used to fight political opponents.

“Financing for the police has always been a problem, but we’ll work with the existing systems. If our constitution changes tomorrow, we will equip our state police even more and know how we will be able to help them to achieve their goal.”

The candidates however argued on the issue of education and renumeration and retaining of teachers.

Akpata argued that the standard of education in the state has dropped due to lack of infrastructure, proper training and renumeration for teachers.

“We will fix infrastructure, teachers recruitment across the state is abysmal, some schools hire teachers themselves. That is the reality in Edo State today.

“Teachers need to be trained and well paid and the curriculum needs to be updated . These changes cut across primary to secondary schools”, he said.

Ighodalo however countered stating even if the best facilities are built, retaining teachers is a major problem in rural areas.

He said: “Even if the best facilities are built but we do not have the staffing, it will be a problem.

“We will ensure that we retain the staff so as not to look for greener pastures elsewhere.”

Court dismisses suit seeking to sack Akpata as LP governorship candidate

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit seeking to void the nomination of Olumide Akpata as the candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State.

In a judgment yesterday, Justice James Omotosho upheld the arguments by Akpata’s lawyer, Johnson Usman (SAN) that the plaintiffs were without the locus standi (the legal right) to institute the suit.

The suit was filed by Anderson Asemota, a factional governorship candidate of LP; Monday Mawah, a deputy governorship candidate and Alhaji Lamidi Apapa, listed as acting national chairman of LP.

Listed as defendants are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Akpata and LP.

Justice Omotosho held that the plaintiffs lacked the locus standi to have approached the court on the issue because they did not participate in the February 23 primary of the LP from which Akpata emerged as the party’s candidate.

The judge also found that the issue was about the nomination of candidate, which forms part of the internal affairs of a political party.

He held that it is the party that determines who its candidate is and proceeded to hold that the court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the suit.

The judge further held that even if the court was to assume jurisdiction, the suit itself lacked merit.

Justice Omotosho noted that contrary to the plaintiffs’ arguments, the Court of Appeal nullified the orders made by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), including the order restraining Julius Abure-led leadership of the party.

The judge added: “This means the 3rd   plaintiff (Apapa) and those who were in acting capacity with him immediately had all their decisions nullified and non-existent. “

Edo: Court dismisses suit seeking Akpata’s sack as LP guber candidate

A Federal High Court in Abuja has  dismissed a suit seeking to void the nomination of Olumide Akpata as the candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State.

In a judgment on Wednesday, July 17, Justice James Omotosho, upheld the arguments by Akpata’s lawyer, Johnson Usman, (SAN) that the plaintiffs were without the locus standi (the legal right) to institute the suit.

The suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/300/24 was filed by Anderson Asemota, a factional governorship candidate of LP; Monday Mawah, a deputy governorship candidate, and Alhaji Lamidi Apapa, listed as acting national Chairman of LP.

Listed as defendants were the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Olumide Akpata and the  Labour Party (LP)

Justice Omotosho held that the plaintiffs lacked the locus standi to have approached the court on the issue because they did not participate in the February 23, 2024 primary of the LP from which Akpata emerged as the party’s candidate.

The judge also found that the issue was about the nomination of candidate, which forms part of the internal affairs of a political party.

He held that it is the party that determines who it’s candidate is and proceeded to hold that the court lacked the  jurisdiction to hear the suit.

The judge further held that even if the court was to assume jurisdiction, the suit itself lacked merit.

Justice Omotosho noted  that contrary to the plaintiffs’ arguments,  the Court of Appeal nullified the orders made by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) including the order restraining Julius Abure-led leadership of the party.

The judge added: “This means that the 3rd plaintiff (Apapa) and those who were in acting capacity with him immediately had all their decisions nullified and non-existent.

“Thus, any letter written by the said acting executives, or any decisions including the purported consensus primary election which produced the 1st plaintiff (Asemota) are all non-existent, void and of no effect whatsoever.

“It is a trite principle of law that you cannot put something on nothing and expect same to stand.

“The entire foundation upon which the plaintiffs claim rests have been thoroughly demolished by the decision of the Court of Appeal.

“The argument that the decision of the High Court of the FCT was valid as at when the primary election was conducted may be true to some extent especially if the Court of Appeal had yet to hand down its judgment.

“The judgment however destroys this argument and ensures that the 1st plaintiff for all intents and purposes cannot be deemed to be a candidate who emerged from a valid primary election.

“Thus the 1st plaintiff cannot claim that his name should be accepted by the Ist defendant as candidate of the 3rd defendant for the governorship elections in Edo State in 2024,” Justice Omotosho said.

The plaintiffs had prayed the court to among others, order  INEC to publish Asemota’s name as the winner of the Edo LP governorship primary election, having emerged as the consensus candidate and winner of the February 22 primary conducted by the Primary Election Committee set up by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) under Apapa’s leadership.
