Supersport.com can reveal that Congolese side, Athletic Club Leopards, have identified Nigeria international and Warri Wolves goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, as a transfer target.

Akpeyi was in goal during the two-legged tie against the club which edged Wolves to move into the group stage of the competition after their play-off victory.

Sources close to the Congolese side revealed that the club hierarchy was impressed with his performance.

Akpeyi has returned to the Super Eagles’ camp in Abuja where the team is preparing for the June 13 AFCON Qualifier against Chad.

Back in 2012, Leopards emerged African champions when they won the CAF Confederation Cup and have since become one of the leading sides on the continent.

    • Seasiders hold Dedebit to 0-0 in Addis Ababa
    • To face MK Etanchéité of DR Congo next

Warri Wolves’ goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi was the hero as the Seasiders cruised to the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup 2-0 on aggregate after they held hosts, Dedebit FC of Ethiopia to a goalless draw in Addis Ababa yesterday.

The Seasiders defeated Dedebit FC 2-0 in Warri three weeks ago through the goals of Oghenekaro Etebo and Gbolahan Salami but the Ethiopians threatened a fight back at home when they visited Nigeria the last time.

They disturbed Warri Wolves and created several scoring chances but Warri Wolves Media Manager, Moses Etu told SportingLife that Akpeyi came to the club’s rescue including stopping a first half penalty to ensure that the Nigerian reps cruise to the next round.

Warri Wolves will face MK Etanchéité of Democratic Republic of Congo in the second round and they will have the task of hosting the side first in Warri on April 19 before the return leg on the weekend of May 1-3.

Akpeyi: I’m still learning under Enyeama

Warri Wolves’  goalkeeper, Daniel  Akpeyi has said that he is still working on his mistakes and cannot consider himself in the same light with Super Eagles’ first choice, Vincent Enyeama after his remarkable performance against South Africa last Sunday.

Akpeyi enjoyed rave reviews from the local and international media after his series of important saves denied the Bafana Bafana from beating the Eagles in a friendly match played in Nelspruit but he has decided to be cautious with his remarks in the media.

He told SportingLife that he still has a long way to go in the game and won’t be too carried away with his performance in South Africa.

Akpeyi told SportingLife: “I am happy with my performance but I am still learning from great goalkeepers including Vincent Enyeama and I cannot consider myself as being best yet. I still have a long way to go in my career and won’t allow the performance of just a match to make my head gets swollen.

He added:”I am grateful to coach Dan Amokachi and other Eagles coaches for giving me a chance and I will always be ready to represent Nigeria whenever called upon.”

Akpeyi saved a penalty kick in the 65th minute of the tie besides the numerous saves he made to dent South Africa’s ambition of beating the Eagles.

Akpeyi sure of clean sheet against Bayelsa

Warri Wolves goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi has promised a clean sheet at neighbours, Bayelsa United.

The Seasiders will be the guests of the Restoration Boys in Sunday’s Glo Premier League match day 32 game at Bayelsa United’s adopted home ground, Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

Akpeyi said the encounter is certain to be difficult mainly due to the presence of his side’s former coach, Solomon Ogbeide on the bench of the opponents, Bayelsa United.

“My dream is to have a good game as well as avoid conceding any goal in the encounter. Of course, I’ll strive to have 100% watch over the back four to make sure there is no mistake.

“If I don’t concede any goal it follows that the team won’t concede any goal too and the effect is that we’ll come out of the clash smiling.

“The clash, aside being a derby, won’t be easy as there is much at stake in the expected grudge match.

”The head coach of Bayelsa United, Solomon Ogbeide was in charge of Warri Wolves last season and will want to leverage on his knowledge of Wolves to pull some surprises.

“Bayelsa United are not comfortable on the league table at the moment and will chance a win aimed at climbing up the ladder but I’m confident we’re equal to the task and won’t allow them the luxury.

“Definitely, a win for us will be perfect while a draw will be okay but defeat is totally out of our calculation,” said the Super Eagles goaltender to supersport.com.

Warri Wolves are second on the 20-team elite league log on 49 points, four points behind leaders, Kano Pillars at the end of week 31 matches.
