TRC law: Aggrieved monarchs to boycott meetings under Oku Ibom Ibibio

The controversy arising from the amended Akwa Ibom Traditional Rulers Council law has continued to generate disaffection among the Ibibio, Annang, Obolo and Oro ethnic groups.

The amended law grants perpetual headship of the new Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers on the Ibibio, the majority ethnic group in Akwa Ibom State.

But aggrieved traditional rulers of Annang, Oro and Obolo rejected the law, insisting that the office of the President-General of Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers must rotate among the ethnic groups.

In a communique issued after an enlarged meeting yesterday in Ikot Ekpene, they threatened to boycott events, meetings and activities presided over by the Oku Ibom Ibibio, HRM Nteyin Solomon Etuk.

The communique was signed by Chief Okon Udofia for the Obolo, Ovong Efiong Unanaowo for Oro and Okuku Prof. Amanam Udo for Annang, among others.

The statement said: “The Converge directs that no member of the Traditional Rulers Council from the Annang, Oron, and Obolo nationalities shall attend any meeting, event, function of any sort presided over by the Oku Ibom Ibibio as the President General of the Supreme Council of Akwa Ibom State Traditional Ruler.

“Whoever that flouts this resolution shall be traditionally sanctioned in accordance with our customs and traditions.

“The Converge gladly accept the authorisation and instructions of our people from Annang, Oron and Obolo ethnic nationalities in Akwa Ibom State to take all necessary legal and constitutional actions against what we all consider a deliberate effort at the obliteration of our ethnic groups as intended by the recently amended Traditional Laws of Akwa Ibom State.

“The law has suddenly turned a once very peaceful state into a fragmented society built on ethnic blocs with capacity for breakdown of law and order”.

They urged the governor to reverse the law in the interest of the peace and unity of all ethnic groups in the state.

  • The role of innovation in economic diversification: A case for Akwa Ibom by Iniubong Emmanuel

The role of innovation in economic diversification: A case for Akwa Ibom by Iniubong Emmanuel

The government of Akwa Ibom state has been urged to leverage innovation to drive its economy and realise its significant potential.

In examining the potential of utilizing innovation for economic diversification under the leadership of Governor Umo Eno, a public affairs analyst and final year student of International Law and Diplomacy at Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Nigeria, Iniubong Emmanuel Sam CFE, highlighted that innovation has the capacity to foster the emergence of new industries, consequently generating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth.

Innovation is the process of developing new products, services, or processes. It is essential for economic diversification, which is the process of developing new economic sectors and industries to reduce reliance on a single sector or industry.

Innovation can drive economic diversification in a number of ways. First, it can lead to the development of new products and services that can be exported to other countries, generating new sources of revenue for the economy. Second, innovation can lead to the development of new industries that can create jobs and boost economic growth. Third, innovation can lead to improvements in productivity and efficiency in existing industries, making them more competitive in the global market.

Akwa Ibom State is heavily reliant on the oil and gas sector for its revenue. This overreliance on a single sector makes the state’s economy vulnerable to fluctuations in oil prices and global economic shocks. To achieve sustainable development, Akwa Ibom State needs to diversify its economy.

Innovation can play a key role in driving economic diversification in Akwa Ibom State. The state has a number of strengths that can support innovation, such as:

A young and growing population – Akwa Ibom State has a young and growing population, which provides a large pool of potential entrepreneurs and innovators.

Lack of a supportive business environment – Akwa Ibom State needs to improve its business environment to make it easier for businesses to start and grow.

Need for a culture of innovation – Akwa Ibom State needs to create a culture of innovation that encourages people to be creative and to think outside the box.

Despite the challenges, there are a number of opportunities to promote innovation in Akwa Ibom State. The state government can play a key role in promoting innovation by:

Investing in education and research – The state government can increase investment in public education and research institutions, and it can also provide scholarships and other financial assistance to students and researchers.

Promoting a culture of innovation – The state government can sponsor innovation competitions and awards, and it can promote innovation in the media. The private sector can also play a role in promoting innovation in Akwa Ibom State by investing in research and development, and by developing new products and services.

By working together, the government and the private sector can help Akwa Ibom State to achieve sustainable development through economic diversification driven by innovation.

Here are some specific examples of how innovation can be used to drive economic diversification in Akwa Ibom State:

Developing new agricultural products and processes: For example, researchers could develop new crop varieties that are more resistant to pests and diseases, or they could develop new ways to process agricultural products into value-added products.

Developing new tourism products and experiences: For example, entrepreneurs could develop new eco-tourism tours or create new cultural attractions.

Developing new industries, such as manufacturing and technology: For example, entrepreneurs could start businesses to manufacture new products or to develop new software applications.

Establish partnerships between academia and industry: Partnerships between academia and industry can help to ensure that research is aligned with the needs of businesses and that research results are commercialized.

Encourage collaboration between researchers and entrepreneurs: Collaboration between researchers and entrepreneurs can help to accelerate the development of new products and services.

Provide support for startups and early-stage businesses: Startups and early-stage businesses are often the source of innovative new ideas. The government and the private sector can provide support to startups and early-stage businesses in the form of funding, mentoring, and access to resources.

Promote open innovation: Open innovation is a collaborative approach to innovation that involves sharing ideas and resources with partners outside the organization. The government and the private sector can promote open innovation by creating platforms and initiatives that facilitate collaboration between different stakeholders.

By investing in innovation, Akwa Ibom State can create a more diversified and sustainable economy.

It is also important to note that innovation is not just about developing new technologies. It can also involve developing new business models, new marketing strategies, and new ways of organizing work. By encouraging people to think creatively and to challenge the status quo, Akwa Ibom State can foster a culture of innovation that will drive economic diversification and sustainable development.

  • Harvest of talents in Akwa Ibom

Countless youths in the country are yet to maximise their God-given talents due to lack of conscious efforts on their part and that of relevant stakeholders to cultivate and harness them for personal and national growth and development.

Sports are, arguably, one of the areas of human endeavours where raw talents are discovered and groomed. Again, it is believed that sports men and women earn higher than some people in several other much-admired professions and vocations.

Besides fame and glamour associated and enjoyed by successful sports men and women, mention must also be made of the enormous health benefits which accrue from engagement in sports activities.

It is with these in mind that the first edition of the Jacob Esuene Squash Club Tournament was initiated. It was organised in the oil city of Eket in Akwa Ibom State.

The competition, which took place in the squash court at the Villa Marina Hotel  Eket witnessed two  squash players in two categories of under 10 and under 15 drawn from the Southsouth geo-political zone.

The 10 clubs from the Southsouth which participated in the tournament included the: Canaan Club of Calabar, Port Harcourt Club, Uyo Club, Benin Club, Police Officers’ Club Mess, Yenogoa Sports Club, Nak Club Calabar, NNPC Squash Club of Warri and Government House Squash Club Asaba.

In a chat with reporters during the event, the Director of the Squash Club, Jacob Esuene, an Engineer revealed that Squash as a sport has a great advantage to health.

According to him, with squash, the issue of high blood pressure normalises naturally without any medication.

Esuene said the Squash Club would help the young people to develop their talent and help them to be future champions in the game of squash.

He said the tournament will not end only in Southsouth region, adding that with time, it will go national and international with the aim of unfolding the talents of citizens.

He said: “I used to hear about how our players are so good in a national platform; I reasoned that it was almost dead.

“Some of the older players stopped playing for five years because there was nothing to encourage them. So, my coach encouraged me and said let us have a private court of our own before I built this court,” he said.

Also speaking, the General Manager of ExxonMobil Mr. Gus Yupis expressed optimism towards the level of the competition and the players, saying that there were so professional.

He said: “I like the discipline of the kids. The talent, the enthusiast and the coaching were absolutely amazing.”

  • Two inmates regain freedom in Akwa Ibom

De Norsemen Kclub Incorporated (DNKI), Akwa Ibom chapter has secured the release of two inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ikot Abasi, by paying the stipulated fines attached to their sentences. The gesture was part of the organisation’s events to mark this year’s World Humanitarian Day on Monday.

While receiving the freed inmates, the Governor, DNKI; Akwa Ibom State chapter, Dr. David Umoh advised them not to go back to crime or risk facing another period of incarceration or worse.

He also advised other inmates of the facility to put their faith in God and remain hopeful for a better future, adding that their time behind bars should serve as a lesson for their past mistakes.

In his remarks, the International President DNKI, Mr. Adeshola Giwa, who was represented by the Director Project K9, Saint Kingsley said the gesture by the Akwa Ibom chapter of the organisation was in line with its project K9 which he said was aimed at de-congesting prisons and enhance reintegration of former convicts to their relations and the society.

Furthermore, the Deputy Legal Adviser of DNKI and Coordinator of Project K9 in Akwa Ibom State Alfred Effiong, a lawyer, stated that apart from their effort at de-congesting prisons, they would also work towards offering pro bono services to inmates who do not have or cannot afford legal representatives and ensure justice is not denied them.

One of the inmates who spoke on behalf of others expressed gratitude to DNKI for volunteering to pay the fine option for two of them, as well as the food items and toiletries they brought. He revealed that the gesture was a confirmation that there is hope for those in correctional facilities.

Both of them expressed profound gratitude to the organisation for their kindness and pledged to stay away from crime.

  • Akwa Ibom: Much ado about UK advisory

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, FCO of the United Kingdom via a statement posted on its website on June 17, cautioned British nationals against travelling to 21 states, including

Akwa Ibom, in Nigeria. The FCO stated, in part, that “There is a high threat of kidnaps throughout Nigeria” and that “Kidnaps can be motivated by criminality or terrorism, and could be carried out for financial or political gain”.

The FCO groups Akwa Ibom in “riverine areas”. Others in the category are the other states but one in the Niger Delta region – Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta. Fifteen of the states are in northern part of the country, which has been the worst hit of Boko Haram terrorism and farmers-herdsmen communal clashes in recent time, while the remaining one state is Abia in the South Eastern part of Nigeria.

A week after the FCO statement was issued, the Akwa Ibom State government, through the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Emmanuel Ekuwem, made a riposte, kicking against inclusion of the state’s name. Perceiving the UK’s security directives to its nationals as erroneous, particularly with the inclusion of Akwa Ibom, the state government advanced its contention in the following words: “We believe Akwa Ibom State was erroneously given a mention in the report based on the agitation for equitable distribution of God’s given resources by the youth of the Niger Delta zone, which fortunately today, through several laudable government intervention programmes, has been significantly reduced.”

While Ekuwem cited glib and presumptuous comments of some topnotch persons in Nigeria, including some top personnel of security agencies in the country that Akwa Ibom “remains one of the most peaceful, safe and secure States in Nigeria”, the UK’s position seems to be relying on reality evidenced in the grievances of people at the lower rung of the society and other residents at the hinterland, who, recently, had been at the receiving end of multi-faceted crimes of banditry, kidnaps, armed robbery, rapes, cult-related clashes, assassinations,

youth restiveness among others, particularly between early 2017 and late 2018.

Within the period, about 200 people were said to have been killed, scores of women raped while private properties worth millions of naira were either destroyed or carted away by gunmen in Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo local government areas of Akwa Ibom State. There were

spillover effects in some part of the neighbouring local government areas of Ika and Oruk Anam. Kidnap incidences, which demands for ransoms ranged from N1, 000 to N100 million, were almost hourly happenings.

To further buttress how safe he believes Akwa Ibom is, Ekuwem stated that “One of the largest American oil and gas companies, Exxon Mobil, operates peacefully in our state”. Meanwhile, he refused to mention that Idongesit Udom, who retired as a manager

in Exxon Mobil and relocated to his village in Ukanafun, was kidnapped and got his right hand amputated for his failure or inability to pay ransom pegged at the rate of his multimillion state-of-art Sure Foundation Polytechnic. By this, Ekuwem only succeeded in portraying how those who live in the villages, however their status, matter to the Akwa Ibom State government. Pity to the rural dwellers!

Measuring on the 36-states-and-Federal-Capital-Territory structure of Nigeria, 21 states is close to two-third of the whole Nigeria, so, why was the state government so forward in countering the UK’s directive to its citizens? Was the state volunteering to rise up to

the occasion for the Federal Republic of Nigeria?  Does the statement by the Akwa Ibom State government imply that the state is immune from insecurity that has been ravaging Nigeria for years now?

The presumption that Akwa Ibom is the safest place in Nigeria, which state officials often gloat about, could be true only to the extent that Ukanafun, Etim Ekpo and the environs, which have been ravaged by criminals, are not part of the state. Amidst the presumptuous reveling that Akwa Ibom is more safe and secure than other places in Nigeria, the state government often provides security details armed to the teeth, to some top professionals and businessmen, who visit the state, including those of Akwa Ibom nativity, who move about freely in Lagos and Abuja.

Insecurity is everywhere in the world today just as it is as old as human history. The differences in security situation from one place to another are marked mostly by conscious effort in an organised society to maul the tide of the malaise. The UK, by that security alert, is doing what other countries that place value on its people have been doing over time.

In addressing how the Akwa Ibom State government has been fighting crimes, it would have sufficed to mention high profiles cases that the state government has successfully prosecuted for the past five years through the state Ministry of Justice.

Akwa Ibom State government is losing from the start, and would lose at the end, in its contention with the UK as to the current security situation of the state. It has nothing to do with UK’s level of sophistication, which dwarfs that of Nigeria, let alone Akwa Ibom, but more to do with the power of truth over falsehood.

Yours truly concedes that candour seems to run in the DNA of the Ekuwems and so his

untainted personal tract record, which might have largely contributed to his ability to carve a niche for himself in private entrepreneurship before becoming a public servant. Many people,

including this writer, would probably queue behind the SSG on matters where

truth and honesty are required. But regarding his official position on the security situation in Akwa Ibom, only those who live life of lies would line up behind him.

If at all the UK versus Akwa Ibom contest is necessary, the first and fortified step to win the war is to defeat criminality, which is still rearing its ugly head, in the state. And the best way to successfully check the monster is to face the reality with truth.
