  • President: we’ll reclaim stolen votes in Akwa Ibom

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday assured the All Progressives Congress(APC) family in Akwa Ibom that the party’s votes which were stolen during the February 23 presidential/national Assembly elections would be reclaimed.

Buhari gave the assurance yesterday in Uyo during a Town hall meeting to appreciate Akwa Ibom electorate for casting their ballot for the (APC) on February 23.

Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who represented the President, encouraged the electorate to defend their votes during the Governorship and House of Assembly elections.

He stated that it was not possible for Senator Godswill Akpabio to have lost the election, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) robbed him and the party of victory, and that all the wrongs that were done during the Presidential and National Assembly elections would be addressed.

He said: “What happened on the 23rd of February was robbery. The votes of the people was stolen but we are not deterred. The President sent me to thank you today. We are going to make sure that everything that was stolen on the 23rd February would be restored.

“It is not possible that Senator Godwill Akpabio lost. We are in no doubt that Senator Akpabio is the elected senator of Akwa Ibom North West senatorial district. I, and Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of party have been in the opposition for long and we cannot be defeated anymore.

“Everyone of you should go out to vote on Saturday and defend your votes; we cannot be cheated; not only you, but tell your neighbours to vote for Obong Nsima Ekere and all APC candidates. Wait for your votes to be counted. It is the duty of the Federal Government to provide security and we will do that. We will recover every one of our votes.”

Also speaking, Oshiomhole said the party was not in the state to lament but to thank the people of the state for doing their jobs and voting President Buhari.

  • APC will reclaim its stolen votes in A’Ibom, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom that the party’s votes which were stolen during the February 23 presidential/national Assembly elections would be reclaimed.

Buhari gave the assurance on Monday in Uyo during a Town hall meeting to appreciate Akwa Ibom electorates for casting their votes for the (APC) party on February 23.

Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo who represented the President, encouraged the electorates to defend their votes during the Governorship and House of Assembly elections.

He stated that it was not possible for Senator Godswill Akpabio to have lost the elections, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) robbed him and the party of victory and that all the wrongs that were done during the Presidential and National Assembly elections would be addressed.

“What happened on the 23rd of February was robbery. The votes of the people were stolen but we are not deterred. The President sent me to thank you today. We are going to make sure that everything that was stolen on the 23rd of February would be restored.

“It is not possible that Senator Godwill Akpabio lost. We are in no doubt that Senator Akpabio is the elected senator of Akwa Ibom North West senatorial district. I and Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the party have been in the opposition for long and we cannot be defeated anymore.

“Everyone of you should go out to vote on Saturday and defend your votes, we cannot be cheated; not only you but tell your neighbours to vote for Obong Nsima Ekere and all APC candidates. Wait for your votes to be counted. It is the duty of the Federal government to provide security and we will do that. We will recover every one of our votes.

Also speaking, the National Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole said the party was not in the state to lament but to thank the people of the state for doing their jobs and voting President Buhari.

He alleged that INEC colluded with some of the electoral officers to deny the state of its electoral victory on February 23, even though the people voted for the party.

“We have not come here to brag that our mandate was stolen last week. We have come to thank you that you voted for President Buhari, and all members of the party. You did your job but some armed robbers in INEC stole your votes.

“You think that those who stole your votes will have peace? We have come to reaffirm our commitment to democracy. We have come to affirm that no robber will go unpunished but when an electoral umpire is corrupt and collude with the opposition, we have the witnesses and we have lawyers to deal with that.

“On Saturday we are not going to wait for them to steal our votes. We call on Akwa Ibom people to protect their votes. We must maintain our sanity even in this hour of provocation. Those who committed democratic abortion would be brought to book,” he said.

The APC governorship candidate in the State, Nsima Ekere encouraged the people not to be deterred by the February 23 elections but to go out and vote during the March 9 elections, saying the party is sure of victory.

He said the people of the state were in need of change and proved it during his campaigns across the 31 local government areas of the state, and assured the President that after March 9 elections, Akwa Ibom state would not be in the opposition but will be reunited with the centre

He said, “Thank you for what you are doing for APC. The people voted for you, that vote is a revalidation of what the people want. You put Nigeria’s economy back on track.

“We are here because we have faith in you and Mr President, the opposition and INEC have no choice than to give us back our mandate. Whosoever shall attempt to work against the collective will of Akwa Ibom people, we shall collectively resist.

“We send a message to the electoral umpire and the other party that they must respect the votes of the people, every vote must count. Akwa Ibom people love APC”.

  • Tourism stakeholders express fear over Ibom Air

Practitioners in the tourism industry have given kudos the Akwa Ibom State government on the launch of its new airline, Ibom Air, owned by the state government.

They believe the airline is a welcome development in the aviation and tourism,  but they are apprehensive over the ability of the state government to sustain the airline in the light of the history of failed domestic airlines in Nigeria.

The view was captured by the President, the Federation of Tourism Associations Nigeria (FTAN), who is also a former Deputy President of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA), Alhaji Saleh Rabo.

Rabo praised Akwa Ibom  for this initiative, but advised them to go  into a business arrangement with a competent private company for proper management of the airline.

He said: “I think it is a welcome development, but my only prayer is that we should be able to sustain it. You know the problem with Nigeria is not about establishing something, but the sustainability. We do not have the culture of maintenance.  We have seen many airlines that have been floated in Nigeria, but after sometimes, they would disappear.

“This is a governor and the person who has the idea. After his tenure, the coming person might not be interested in the project. I hope that they will set up the machinery that could keep the airline going, even after the governor of today might have left the system. Because we don’t want a situation that at the end of the day, we are going to run back to the same old story that we have been having. But for us in the industry, it is a welcome development and I hope they will be able to maintain it.”

On how the airline could effectively function within the Nigerian aviation business climate, Rabo said: “Seriously I think that it is going to be very difficult. It is not going to be easy because for all we have seen, it is going to be difficult. I think the government should go into partnership between the government and the private sector. I will appreciate it, if it so.

“So even if the government of the day which has the interest to run the airline is out, there will be sustainability. So, inasmuch as it is a welcome development, I hope they will be able to sustain it. The key thing is sustenance; it is not just starting something.”

Responding to this fear, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Udoh, said the state government carried out due diligence before foraying into the aviation industry.

He said: “First, let me give you a background. Today in Akwa Ibom State, we are blessed with a good governor, Udom Emmanuel. Beside being a consummate professional and  a business-oriented person with all his experience in the private sector, he leads a team of tested private sector practitioners who have come to the government to help stabilize and set the pace in government in Akwa Ibom State.

“In the last three and half years, what we have done is to break the limits,   things that were previously thought to be impossible, from our industrialization efforts and tourism drive in the state. Today, we have an airline. First, in entering into this kind of arrangement, most business partners will not trust a state government because of the transient nature of the government. But for the foreign partners to trust the Akwa Ibom State government led by Governor Udom Emmanuel, speaks volumes.

“What this governor has done is that he brought to bear his wealth of experience,  contacts  in the private sector and, of course, his pedigree to get them interested. Today,   we are running an airline that has 100 per cent equity of the state government.

“What we have done is to set it up as a purely business entity, benchmarking international standards and the processes are well laid out, benchmarking the very best in the world. From the point of setting it up, we have been clear about that. That is why from recruitment, we didn’t do recruitment based on quota system, based on emotion; we did the recruitment based on getting the brightest and the best wherever they are.

“Normally the thought would have been let us populate the entire crew with Akwaibomites, but what the government did was that, yes if we can find the right Akwa Ibom persons, with the right qualifications, we will bring him or her in. If not, if we can’t, then  bring the brightest and best from wherever they may be from. Then, over time, we will groom our people with requisite qualifications to become managers of that business.

“Today, the team captain of the airline is an Akwa Ibom son, but we poached from Ethiopian Airlines. You know the Ethiopian Airlines is government owned. We were saying to ourselves, if Ethiopia, as small as their GDP is, compared to Nigeria; if Kenya as small as it is compared to Nigeria, if Rwanda. If all these small countries can manage successful airlines, it means it is not rocket science; it means it takes careful planning, careful business model to make it work which is what we have done. That tells you we took time to carry out all due diligence.”

The commissioner insisted that the state had done its homework before venturing into the airline business and that  Ibom Air would be a success.

  • Court orders arrest of Akwa Ibom commissioners for alleged money laundering

The Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday issued a bench warrant for the arrest of two Akwa Ibom State commissioners.

They are Commissioner for Finance, Nsikan Nkan and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Uwemedimo Nwoko. Justice Rilwan Aikawa also ordered the arrest of Akwa Ibom State Accountant-General, Mfon Udomah.

Their arrest followed an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which said they were at large. They were charged along with Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president, Mr Paul Usoro (SAN), for alleged N1.4 billion fraud.

EFCC re-arraigned Usoro before Justice Aikawa. He pleaded not guilty. After the re-arraignment, prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, urged the court to compel the appearance of the suspects due to the commission’s inability to produce them. He said the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) empowers the court to compel the appearance of a suspect either by sum mons or warrant. “We seek your Lordship’s order to compel their attendance. We seek to bring them before the court in the interest of justice,” he said. But Usoro’s lead counsel, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), opposed the application. He said those sought to be arrested were not named as defendants in the charge.

“The individuals were not charged before the court. Until they are charged, you cannot order their arrest,” the SAN said. But the judge refused Ifedayo’s objection. Granting the prayer, Justice Aikawa held: “I order that bench warrant be issued against the named persons.” Justice Aikawa is the third judge to handle the case. Usoro was first arraigned before Justice Muslim Hassan on a 10-count charge.

The judge later withdrew from the case after Usoro asked him to recuse himself. Usoro was to be re-arraigned before Justice Chika Obiozor, but the judge recused himself for personal reasons on the day of re-arraignment.

“For personal reasons, I hereby disqualify myself from handling the case. “I hereby return this file to the Chief Judge for reassignment to another judge,” Justice Obiozor ruled. Also named in the charge is Governor Emmanuel Udom, “currently constitutionally immuned from prosecution.

” EFCC alleged that the defendants committed the offence on May 14, 2016. The commission alleged that Usoro conspired with others to commit the offence within the court’s jurisdiction. He was alleged to have conspired to convert N1.4 billion, property of Akwa Ibom State Government, which sum they reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful activity.

The prosecution said the unlawful activity included criminal breach of trust which contravened sections 15 (2), 15(3), and 18 (A) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011. Usoro, represented by six SANs and other lawyers, pleaded not guilty.

Justice Aikawa allowed him to continue on the bail granted him by Justice Hassan. Justice Hassan granted Usoro bail for N250 million, with one surety in like sum. The court added that the surety must own landed property within the court’s jurisdiction, or be a civil servant not lower than the rank of a Director in the Federal or State civil service. The NBA President was further ordered to deposit his international passport with the Court’s Deputy Chief Registrar (DCR), which will be verified for genuineness.

The court then ordered that Usoro be handed over to a counsel of the inner bar, Mr E.B. Effiong (SAN), pending perfection of his bail terms. Justice Aikawa added that if the surety is below the rank of director, he must deposit his title documents with the court’s registry.

Oyedepo pointed out that Usoro was yet to meet the bail conditions imposed on him by Justice Hassan. Justice Aikawa ordered Usoro to perfect his bail terms within two weeks. “The defendants shall be released to Offiong pending fulfilment of his bail conditions, which shall be on or before March 15,” the judge said. Justice Aikawa adjourned until March 18 and 19 for trial.

  • Atiku wins in Akwa Ibom

•Akpabio loses re-election bid  •APC alleges vote buying, manipulation

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubabar has won 28 of the 30 local government areas in Akwa Ibom State.

President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) took two councils, namely Mbo and Essien Udim, where Senator Godswill Akpabio hails from.

Elections in Udung Uko were cancelled due to alleged violence and irregularities arising from snatching of ballot boxes, result sheets and card readers.

This is as a strong indication emerged last night that Akpabio had finally lost his re-election bid to the Senate to the PDP candidate, Chris Ekpenyong.

Results from eight of the 10 local government areas that make up Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District favoured the PDP candidate. Akpabio won in Ikot Ekpene with a slight margin.

The INEC finally rejected the result from Essien Udim, Akpabio’s local government after it confirmed through the card reader that votes earlier allocated to Senator Akpabio were much more than the total number of accredited voters in the council area.

On the elections, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, said the elections in the state was generally peaceful despite pockets of violence as shown in the destruction of INEC materials and attacks on the commission’s staff by thugs working for politicians.

“Those who are threatening our staff should stop it. The intimidation is getting too much. I am here to preside over the affairs of elections in this state. For the first time, to ensure credibility of the elections. Materials were deployed and they were destroyed and at a great loss to our country. The time to snatch ballot boxes and write results is over. If you can win, you will win,” he said.

But, the APC kicked against the result of the presidential election, calling for its cancellation over alleged electoral fraud.

Addressing a news conference after the collation of the results, presidential agent for APC, Bishop Samuel Akpan, alleged that the polls was fraught with irregularities and completely short of democratic norms.

State Party Agent Umana Umana said: “The position of our party is well-documented. The whole process of collation is not satisfactory to our party. Vote buying was experienced all over the state. We hope that the umpire will take note of the grievances in our petition. We are talking about the integrity of the process. We are saying that the umpire to be seen to be fair to all concerned.

Similarly, Akpan also alleged vote buying and manipulation by PDP in connivance with INEC.

“Long before now, our party has been agitating that we do not have confident in the process. In addition, the outcome has proved now that there has been compromise arising from money that had changed hands. Akwa Ibom is an APC State and the people that made the PDP are now in the APC.

“The results we are getting do not reflect the votes that we have. This is not the type of democracy that we want. We urge the Federal Government to rise and protect our democracy,” he said.
