  • APC will win in Akwa Ibom – Akpabio

The former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, on Monday said that victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC), in elections in Akwa Ibom State was a “done deal”.

He spoke on the sideline of the inauguration of the APC presidential campaign council by President Buhari at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Akpabio, who is the immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State, said that apart from the massive infrastructure going on in the state, the APC campaign will be based on the integrity of the President.

He said, “I thank the APC family for giving us (Akwa Ibom APC) the opportunity to kick-start presidential campaigns in 2019 like what you saw, that shows indeed the future is very bright for the party, the prospects are very strong.

“We have a lot to campaign with, the social infrastructure, the SEED programme, a lot has been achieved by this President as never done before. In the past, we had so much of recurrent expenses but today, we are now seeing infrastructure on ground like the railways, the roads and other infrastructural programmes of this administration.

“But over and above that, we have so much confidence in the integrity of Mr. President and I think most of the campaigns in 2019 will be based on integrity. There is need for Nigeria to take its rightful place in the comity of nations. So for me in Akwa Ibom, it’s a done deal.” he said

The former governor of Delta state, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has also said that the achievements of President Buhari in the Niger Delta area and Delta state, in particular, would make his re-election in the February presidential election very easy.

According to him, the efforts of the President Buhari-led government have brought relative peace in the Niger Delta region.

He said “We are sure of delivering because Mr. President has done a lot for Delta state. Don’t forget that Delta state is like the nucleus of the crisis in Niger Delta and of course when Mr. President came in, we had this Niger Delta Avengers that came up in 2016.

“When Mr. President came in and it took the ingenuity of Mr. President and the Vice President to manage that crisis, the Vice president has to come to the state, the Minister of Petroleum had to come to the state, to the heart of the creeks in Niger Delta to do engagement processes.

“In fact, the Vice President went round every state in the Niger Delta; it has never been done before. For Delta, in particular, he was there, he went to see traditional rulers, he went to see some of the youths, he went to see those that were involved in the crisis and that helped significantly in managing the crisis.

“Apart from that, Mr. President also has done a lot in terms of infrastructure and human capital development in Delta state and across the Niger Delta. The railway to Alaja is now functional and of course they have started carrying passengers.

“As at today, there is a lot of work going on at Escravos bar. That was the entry to the Delta state port that was not passable but by the time they finish with it, it will be passable.

“Of course, a lot of roads have been done by the NDDC (Niger Delta Development Commission), the number of roads that have been done by the NDDC in the last three years have never been done before.

“From the human capital development area, we have the N-Power, we have the feeding of our school children, we have the tradermoni and also the empowerment programmes that are being done by the Federal Government. So we have a lot to campaign within Delta state.” he said

  • Oshiomhole, Tinubu eulogise Ekere, assure Akwa Ibom of good governance

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, have assured the people of Akwa Ibom State of better days ahead when the party’s gubernatorial candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Obong Nsima Ekere, becomes Governor in 2019.

Both APC leaders spoke at the weekend during the presidential campaign flag-off for the South-South Zone in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

His words: “Unlike PDP government there now, they keep complaining. They keep drawing us back. Attah came in, performed creditably well. By the Grace of God Almighty, we are going to get victory.”

  • ‘APC’ll win Akwa-Ibom in 2019’

Mr Ini Okopido, the Akwa Ibom Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has assured that the state would be the first opposition state to be captured by the APC in the 2019 elections.

Okopido gave the assurance in his welcome address on Friday at the flag-off of the APC South-South Presidential Campaign held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

He said with the support the party was receiving from Akwa Ibom the party would win the state come 2019.

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari, the party’s flag-bearer for the Presidential poll, who also addressed participants at the campaign flag-off, for the appointments he gave to the sons and daughters of the state in his Government.

“We want to assure you that Akwa Ibom loves you. Akwa Ibom people appreciate you for all the appointments you have given our sons and daughters.

“We assure you that Akwa Ibom people will vote for you and vote to deliver all APC candidates in 2019.

“Akwa Ibom will be the first state to be captured by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general elections,” Okopido said.

  • A’Ibom rejects anti-terrorism unit

The Akwa Ibom government has rejected the plan by the state police command to set up an anti-terrorism unit.

The state government said that judging from all indices that precede the creation of such sensitive anti-crime unit in Akwa Ibom, which is at the moment one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria, is suspicious.

In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Charles Udoh in Uyo on Thursday, the government expressed concerns the setting up of the anti-terrorism Unit is part of the ground work and ploy of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) to illegally intimidate, harass and arrest government functionaries and the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“It has come to the notice of Akwa Ibom State Government that the State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has concluded plans to set up an anti-terrorism unit in the state.

“Clearly, the question is, of what use is it in one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria?

“As the 2019 general elections approach and political tempo assumes a crescendo pitch, a functional anti-terrorism Unit in the state, will certainly arrest and detain whosoever it wills, on trumped up charges of acts of terrorism.

“To buttress the sinister motive of the anti-terrorism unit, sources say a former Chief Security Officer to former Governor Godswill Akpabio, has been redeployed to Akwa Ibom, with tactical instructions on how to successfully execute the unholy agenda of the APC leadership in the state.

“While acknowledging the Force retains the right to create units as it deems necessary, Akwa Ibom State government frowns at attempts by the Police hierarchy to portray Akwa Ibom as a terrorist enclave in Nigeria, by its planned establishment of an anti-terrorism unit.

“It is the consensus of Nigerians that such sensitive section be activated and logistically mobilized to effectively function in parts of Nigeria where insurgency is rife, especially in the North-Eastern region, where lives of innocent Nigerians are lost on a daily basis”.

The government insisted activities of members of the unit will undoubtedly cause unwarranted tension among the peace-loving citizens and residents of Akwa Ibom State.

  • Transporters deny receiving A’Ibom govt empowerment

Transport operators in Akwa Ibom have denied receiving mini buses and N50 million or any form of empowerment from the state government.

The transporters under the aegis of Private Transport Operators and Park Owners Association (PTOPOA) dismissed media reports of their purported empowerment by government, describing it as a huge scam.

The transporters disassociated themselves from the alleged empowerment describing the beneficiaries of it as impostors who reap from where they did not sow.

Addressing journalists on behalf of the group, the chairman of PTOPOA, Mr. Uwemedimo Essen said: “It was erroneous by all standards to attribute the name transporters to people who are actually not players in the transport business.

“Gone are the days when a selected few within the transport sector in Akwa Ibom who operate on the fringes shortchanged the real transporters for their personal gains”.

“It is against this background that we want to use this medium to disassociate ourselves from the recent announcement over the radio that transporters in Akwa Ibom State have been empowered with a number of mini buses by the government of Akwa Ibom State. That is not true.

“We the real transporters in Akwa Ibom State are not aware of any such development.

“But if actually His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel did empower some people with buses and money, then the beneficiaries must be those usurpers and imposters who have always reaped from where the real transporters sowed.”

While pledging continued loyalty to Governor Udom Emmanuel, the real transporters appealed to the state government to help them implement a blueprint that can create as many as 40 transport companies instead of just giving out buses and money that would be hijacked by the alleged impostors, maintaining that such is their preferred empowerment.

At the events were Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Tricycle Operators Welfare Forum (TOWF), Transport Operators Movement (TOM), Tricycle Union of Nigeria (TUN), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) among other stakeholders in the transport sector.

  • Why Buhari can’t use stadium for campaign, by Akwa Ibom Govt

The controversy surrounding Akwa Ibom State government’s decision not to allow the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium for political campaigns and other activities may have died down, it was learnt yesterday.

The dispute over the 30,000 capacity stadium started after the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) applied to the state government requesting for the use of the facility for the kick-off of President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign on the Friday.

The state government through the commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Monday Uko gave reasons the facility cannot be used for now.

In a statement made available to reporters, Uko said: “The government of Akwa Ibom State has received with gladness the notice of the proposed visit of His Excellency, the President of the Federal

Republic of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari, GCFR, to our dear state on December 28, 2018.

“Consequent to this proposed visit, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Akwa Ibom State is in receipt of a letter of application dated December 19, 2018, requesting for the use of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium as the venue for his reception ceremony.

“Whereas we have sent a letter, dated December 20, 2018 in response to the application, addressed to Hon. Ini Okopido, the State Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, Akwa Ibom State, we are obliged, in light of the unfortunate attempt by some political actors and commentators to pit Akwa Ibom State Government against President Muhammadu Buhari and the Presidency. May we inform Akwa Ibom people and the entire public, of the reasons for our inability to approve the use of the requested venue. As stated in our response, our inability is hinged on two grounds.

“That the next season of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is scheduled to begin on January 13, 2018. In view of this and the fixtures of home matches for Akwa United FC, it will be practically impossible to ‘regrass’ the stadium for pre-fixed matches, if used for non-sports activities, because of the nature of pressure that such events bring on the pitch.

“Additionally, the maintenance contractor (Julius Berger) had also advised that the present atmospheric conditions being very hostile to the pitch, the facility should not be used for non-sport activities during this harmattan period, so as to avoid inflicting long term or irreversible damage to the grass on the football pitch.

“This reason forced the relocation of the State’s Christmas Carols festival from the earlier proposed Godswill Akpabio International Stadium to the Uyo township Stadium. “Moreover, the stadium from its inception has been under a maintenance contract with Julius Berger Construction Company.

“They operate all the sensitive and non-sensitive components of the facility. They had closed for the year and proceeded on vacation (as it has been their usual practice) and are due to resume on January 7, 2018. The implication of this is that, the technical capacity required to activate the venue is currently unavailable, and this is not within our control.

“The ministry has however approved, in the alternative, the use of the Uyo Township Stadium for the event. We guarantee that the approved venue is in perfect condition”.

Though the APC has not given issued any response to government’s position on the state, our correspondent gathered that the party may resort to the Uyo Township Stadium for the Buhari campaign.

Spokesperson of the APC campaigns in the state, Mr. Eseme Eyiboh told The Nation that “the party will do everything within its ability to give President Buhari a befitting reception in Uyo and also ensure that the campaign kick-off takes place peacefully and successfully.

He, was however, silent on whether the party will insist on the use of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium for the event.

  • PDP members defect to APC in Akwa Ibom

Over 5,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ikot Abasi Local Government of Akwa Ibom State have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The latest defectors, coming from Ukpum Okon and Edemaya clans, joined APC when party leaders toured their clans.

APC chairman in Ikot Abasi Ubong Ekpo, who received the defectors, listed the pains the people had suffered in the hands of PDP, including the killing of the Aluminum Smelter Company (ALSCON). He thanked the people for embracing APC.

Mr. Emem Ukpe, who responded on behalf of the defectors, said his people had accepted the APC.

Pastor Uko Udoisong, Mrs. Alice Archibong and Mr. Usen Julius, who spoke on behalf of the defectors, promised to support the old APC members to deliver Edemaya, the home clan of Nsima Ekere, APC governorship candidate, to APC.

  • Akwa Ibom: Critical infrastructure and transformation

Lack of critical infrastructure has been the bane of economic development in Nigeria for decades. This has remained an intractable problem that successive governments at the federal and state levels have had to tackle, with varying degrees of success.

The imperative of infrastructure as the bedrock for socio-economic development (or advancement, as the case may be) could be seen from the point of view of the fact that at no stage can it be considered to be enough, even in developed countries where provision of infrastructure is a continuous process, despite the availability of what is generally accepted as the best.

It is a different kettle of fish in a country like Nigeria with very high infrastructure deficit brought about by many years of neglect, as well as the proclivity to spend tax payers’ money on white elephants projects that have no socio-economic benefits to the people. It is one of the reasons the country is littered with abandoned projects. Addressing infrastructure deficit, therefore, is a process that can’t have an end.

This is the fact that Udom Emmanuel established when he assumed office as Akwa Ibom State Governor on May 29, 2015. The two previous administrations in the state had laid the foundation for infrastructural development in two key areas – power and roads – respectively. In order to get the state ready for the industrial and economic transformation that he envisioned, he needed to improve on those two areas and take them to a higher level.

The governor identified power as being central to the realisation of the objective of having a strong economic base, and went to work to improve on what he met on assumption of office. Within one year of his tenure, he secured approval from the federal government for generation of additional 685 megawatts of electricity from the Ibom Power Plant at Ikot Abasi, built by the administration of Obong Victor Attah, the first elected governor in the current dispensation. The effort saw the injection of 2 x 15MVA and 33/11KVA into power transmission in the state. The government also rehabilitated facilities that are strategic to power supply at Ekim-Itam, Mkpat Enin and Ikot Ekpene. Today, between 85 per cent and 90 per cent of villages and communities in the state are connected to the national greed, while some sections of the state enjoy between 18 and 20 hours of power supply daily. And in order to ensure the state remains an island of constant power supply during periods of national outage, the government has installed what is known as “dead bus technology” in the transmission system. The system would guarantee regular power supply in the state, even when the entire country is in darkness. Akwa Ibom is the only state in the country with such facility.

The government has obtained a financial investments decision (FID) from the World Bank for the construction of a 540 megawatts Qua Iboe Power Plant at Eket. The project, which is being promoted by Qua Iboe Power Plant Limited (QIPPL), an initiative of ExxonMobil, is estimated to cost $1.1 billion, with an additional $500 million for gas to boost power generation in the country.

Governor Udom Emmanuel said at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for the project that it would solve the country’s gas challenges, and commended QIPPL for its commitment to its execution. “I am always glad to be associated with something that will drive employment, provide the bases for industrialization and I think the QIPP is just one of them”, he said.

Mr. Brian Herlihy, Chief Executive Officer of the company, commended Governor Emmanuel for his support for the project, and assured that construction of the power plant would commence before the end of 2018. He said the project was aimed at establishing a fruitful relationship with the neighbouring communities and also developing sustainable programmes for accelerated socio-economic development in the state and the country at large. He also said more than 20, 000 indigenes of the state would be employed during construction of the plant.

The various initiatives are all geared towards making Akwa Ibom truly independent in power generation – a necessary requirement for creating a conducive climate for investment, which the Udom administration has started delivering in the state.

“I said our duty will be to industrialise Akwa Ibom and you cannot talk about industrialization if you don’t give power to the people”, Udom said. “You must create an enabling environment”.

The governor’s intervention in critical infrastructure has made it possible for investors to begin to look in the direction of Akwa Ibom, in a manner the state had not witnessed before his assumption of office. This is evident in the number of investments that have come into the state in the last three years, which have been responses to the favourable investment climate the administration’s policies have engendered in the state.

“The government has been fantastic in terms of infrastructural support”, said Mr. Tolulope Ogunkolade, managing director and chief executive officer of the Akwa Ibom Electricity Metering Solutions Company, one of the industries Udom has attracted to the state. “The government also facilitated electricity supply. The intervention of the government has also led to improved company/community relations”.

At the time Udom took office, infrastructural development in Akwa Ibom – mostly road construction and rehabilitation – was concentrated in Uyo, the capital. Not much attention was paid to other parts of the state, including the hinterland. The governor realized that in order to make the state attractive for investment, there was need to make all parts accessible. He therefore embarked on massive road construction and rehabilitation to open up the state, in such a way that today, there is no part of the state that cannot be reached with ease under two hours – from one end to the other.

At the last count, the Udom administration has constructed 1, 701 roads and 35 bridges, while more are currently under construction across the state. The administration has had to pump more money into completion of the 25-kilometer Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road that was left uncompleted by the immediate past administration, despite the fact that there was full budgetary provision for it , and on paper, the road was supposed to have been completed. The strategic importance of the road lies in the fact that it is the main highway that connects the South East geo-political zone with Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

Other roads that are of strategic economic importance include the 20-kilometer Ikot Oku Ikono Road; 29-kilometer Etinan-Ndoneyo Road, and the 12-lane Eket-Ibeno Road that has a connection to the Ibaka Deep Sea Port.

The road to the deep sea port is of paramount importance to the government. It is one of the outlets that would ensure easy flow of traffic when the port is completed and becomes operational, because of the volume of business Ibaka is expected to generate in the Gulf of Guinea.

“We want to be different from Lagos by providing roads so that we will not have another Apapa scenario along the sea port”, Ephraim Inyang-Eyen, Commissioner for Works, told reporters in Uyo. “We want to prevent traffic snarl. Before December, we will intensify efforts in doing the road. Already, we are filling the sand and building bridges on the 5.5 kilometre road.  Already, nine kilometers have been sand filled. It will be commercialized. Tolls will be collected and the money collected will be used for maintaining the road”.

Governor Emmanuel has promised to raise the bar in provision of infrastructure in his second term. This is because in his consideration, the state is still far from attaining the height he envisages, against the background of the conducive environment he is trying to create, to make businesses thrive.
