  • To their Excellencies

    To their Excellencies

I would have written you all individually. But since you are all brothers from the Southsouth, I have taken the liberty to make it a joint New Year missive.

Consider this my New Year contribution to the development of the goose that lays the golden egg, which has made us all lazy and unable to diversify.

Permit me to start from Akwa Ibom. Governor Udom Emmanuel, please pardon me for poke-nosing into your affairs. Why? It is all about the Uyo Church tragedy on which I have written a couple of times.  In the spirit of the New Year sir, ensure the victims of the tragedy do not die in vain by punishing those complicit.

Sir, last December marked the first anniversary of the tragedy at the Reigners Bible Church. On the occasion of the anniversary, I had raised some posers:  Will we ever see the White Paper of the report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, which you received on July 7, last year? That day when  Justice Umoekoyo Essang, who chaired the panel, presented the report to you at the Executive Council Chamber, Government House Uyo, you said: “I want to thank you for this great job that you have done and to assure you once again that the recommendations of this report would be taken seriously. We would do everything to implement and prevent future occurrence of this tragedy. May this affliction never occur the second time”.

You also used the occasion to commiserate with families of those who lost their loved ones in the tragedy.

Sir, one of those it took away was Josephine Effiom. You too survived by the grace of God. The founder of the church, Pastor Akan Weeks, had his leg broken.

Effiom, who was a polytechnic student, a friend said, “was one of the first three brilliant chaps in my class”. Effiom was the face of a tragedy in a house of God, where fear should have been the last thing on anyone’s mind.

As typical of our nation, no one appears sure of how many people died. The day after, we saw figures as high as 160 in the media. It was attributed to the Chief Medical Director of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, who later denied it. Police gave the figure as 29. Commissioner for Health Dominic Ukpong said 26 people died in the unfortunate incident.

Your men who crawled out of death’s hole had interesting testimonies to share. Your Chief Press Secretary Ekerette Udoh said an iron rod nearly cut his neck, but eventually hit him on the back. The cap of his left knee was broken and pains travelled all over his body.

Your Commissioner for Information, Charles Udoh, who joined the State Executive Council only some one week earlier, thought he was watching a movie when the pillars started coming down. He was on his way out of the church to catch a flight when tragedy struck.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) said the tragedy was caused by shoddiness. Sir, I want to plead that you should please ensure that those who overtly or covertly contributed to the tragedy must be punished. The Reigners Bible Church Int’l Inc tragedy must not happen again. One way to do this is to implement the recommendations of the Justice Essang panel. Anything short of this will be a disservice to the memories of the dead.

Let me move to your brother in Rivers, Governor Nyeson Ezenwo Wike. Sir, I write this with fear in my mind because the last time I wrote you, my friend who is your media aide, Simeon Nwakaudu, described me in terms I am still contemplating.

But that notwithstanding I will make my New Year request. On Monday, you addressed the good people of Rivers State on the January 1 killings in Omoku. 23 innocent persons were killed.

In that broadcast, you released a list of 32 who you accused of being responsible for violence in various local government areas of your state. According to you, some of them embraced the Amnesty Programme you initiated but later reneged.

You offered to pay N20 million to any person who volunteers useful information that will lead to the arrest and prosecution of any of the 32. You had harsh words for the late Don Wanny, who you described as “notorious cultist, kidnapper, terrorist and murderer”.

You also assured the security agencies of your determination to continue supporting them to have these criminals apprehended and brought to justice.

My request Your Excellency is that you should work with all possible to see that the bad boys are run out of town or arrested and prosecuted. Rivers is a beautiful state and should be for only beautiful people. The ‘ugly’ ones should have no peace.

Let me stop there Your Excellency before I write anything that will incur Nwakaudu’s anger. Your Excellency, Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson, my request is simple: find a way to manage the former First Family. I know you will disagree with me about your not-too-good relationship with the former First Family, especially embattled ex-First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan.

I foresee a situation your loyalists and the former First Family’s will be at war over who gets what in the state.

My next stop is at the doorstep of Your Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki. Sir, towards the end of last year, a battle broke out between two business moguls, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Abdulsamad Rabiu over a mining site in Okpella.

Since the battle started I have had cause to feel that the state government is taking sides with one of the parties.

Your Excellency, I want to believe that these signs are not clear enough. May be I need to change my eye-glasses. That notwithstanding, my plea is that both Rabiu and Dangote have contributed immensely to our economy. They are men who without many will be jobless. So, when a dispute arises between them, the right thing is to allow it to be resolved through civilised means. There is a court case over the dispute and I plead that the law should be allowed to take its course.

Your Excellency, I am troubled each time your media aide issues statements which give the impression that you are willing to sacrifice one of these men. Please, let the law take its course. Abeg!

Delta is a state dear to my heart. A part of my wife comes from there. I don’t have a request Your Excellency, Governor Patrick Okowa. Let me just congratulate you for allowing the train of charade called local government elections in Nigeria to berth in your state. I will not expatiate.

I end this all with Cross River helmsman Prof. Ben Ayade. My request is simple: get the doctors back to work. The Cross River State Branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) earlier in the week directed all its members to immediately withdraw their services following the abduction of another of its member, Dr Emem Udoh, in Calabar.

Yes, this is not Your Excellency’s fault largely but as the chief security officer, it is your duty to ensure safety of life and property. On this basis, do more to end kidnapping and other crimes in the state.

The doctors must come back to work to ensure innocent lives are not lost to non-availability of medical hands to attend to emergency cases.

I also appeal to Your Excellency to work with the Cross River State House of Assembly to pass a law prescribing severe punishment for those convicted of kidnapping in the state. They should be made to lose the proceeds of the crime, such as houses, hotels and so on.

    Bye for now, Your Excellencies.

Gunmen kidnap ex-councillor in Akwa Ibom

Suspected kidnappers have abducted Idongesit Silas Udokang, a former councillor in Ward 10, Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

It was learnt that the hoodlums abducted Udonkang, popularly called ‘Ijebu,’ from Edem Akai, while he was visiting his girlfriend in neighbouring Obon Ebot, also in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.

“The hoodlums stormed the woman’s compound and took the former Councillor away at gunpoint.

“They have contacted the family and demanded N1 million,” a family source told The Nation.

He explained that the neigbouring villages, including Udianga Enem, Abak Obong, Okoyo, Ikot Mkporikpo, Otoro, Uruk Ata 11, Ikot Udobong and Ikpe, have become cultists’ den following collapse of “Operation Purge”, a Joint Task Force (JTF) launched by the police command, to dislodge the hoodlums.

“They broke into two compounds yesterday and carted people’s belongings in the wee hours of the night in Udianga Enem village, forcing people to escape into Churches”, he lamented, adding that “some policemen posted on routine surveillance are now on the Ikot Mkporikpo and Ikot Nya portion of the Etim Ekpo-Iwukem highway, to extort monies from motorists”.

Police spokesman Elkana Bala, a deputy superintendent (DSP), said the new spokesman will issue a statement on it.

“Right now, I have been posted to Eket to stay there briefly before returning to headquarters in Abuja,” he said.

Police Commissioner Samuel Ogunjemilusi last week lamented the deplorable security situation in Etim Ekpo.

Ogunjemilusi urged officers and men to form security cordon around the troubled areas in order to safeguard lives and properties.

Deputy Governor Moses Ekpo gave the promise when he received the returnees who were rescued from Libya by the Federal Government.

The returnees, who arrived the country through Port Harcourt International Airport on Monday, wore forlorn faces.

They said they were very happy to return to their state of origin after months of incarceration in Libya.

“I believe you have learnt your lessons through your travel to seek greener pastures where they do not exist.

“Thank God for your safety, we have received you back into the state. Government will take charge and cater for your welfare.

Sampson, a mother of three children, said that after the death of her husband, a woman took her to Libya on condition that she would work to offset the transport expenses incurred on her.

“I work for 10 months in Libya and paid the madam her N600,000. Unfortunately, when I started to work for myself I was arrested and thrown into prison where I was living on a meal of Macaroni once daily.

“I was arrested and put in an underground prison for nine months. The Libyans tortured us every day while in prison.

“One of us from this state by the name Eno died in prison as a result of the torture,” Sampson said.

Another returnee, Isonguyoh Patrick, a 2012 Banking and Finance graduate from one of the Nigerian universities said he travelled to seek job in Europe.

He said he was trapped in Libya and imprisoned for four months.

“After my graduation from the university in 2012, I tried to look for job in the country, but it was not forthcoming.

“My friend facilitated by travelling to Europe in search of the greener pastures but I could not get to Europe before I was arrested and thrown into prison for four months.

“Travelling to Europe by land is the worst venture anyone can undertake,” Patrick said.

He appealed to governments to make policies and programmes that would create jobs for the teeming youths to discourage illegal traveling.

The eight returnees were made up of five males and three females.

Following a Prison break at Ikot Ekpene Prison in Akwa-Ibom State on Wednesday where four inmates were killed and 36 were said to have escaped, 14 of them have been recaptured.

Controller Prisons, Akwa-Ibom State Command, Alex Oditah who disclosed the development to our correspondent through a telephone conversation said men of the Department of State Services, ( DSS ), police, prisons armed and other security agencies are combing the state to fish out the remaining escapees.

The prisoners on Wednesday attacked the prison’s kitchen staff that was on duty seizing an axe from fellow inmate attached to the kitchen and inflicted a deep cut on the inmates’ head in the process and immediately made for the rear entrance to the prison.

They broke the door with the axe and engaged the staff that chased after them in battle.

At the end of the scuffle, 4 of them that sustained gun shots lost their lives while 7 were recaptured.

Oditah was optimistic that the search parties that have been activated to effect their recapture of the remaining inmates are not resting on their oars.

Meanwhile, the Controller of Prisons Akwa Ibom State Command, Alex Oditah told The Nation that the Controller General of the Nigeria Prison Service (NIS), Ja’faru Muhammed has constituted a four –man investigation committee to look into the circumstance surrounding the unfortunate incident.

A highly placed source in the Ministry of Interior told The Nation that heads may role over the jail break which according to the source is embarrassing.

The source said: “This is a sad development. How would the authority explain this? Is it that there is no tight security? I am sure more people will dance to the music where proper investigation is concluded. Government will not let this issue go without adequate punishment. The prison boss has been ordered fro above to carry out a proper investigation and aside that another investigation is ongoing that is not known to the prison authority. The Minister of Interior is concerned about this and would not allow this act to continue.”

Meanwhile, findings revealed that security has been tightened in prison formations across the country following the incident.

A visit to Kuje Prison by our correspondent showed that more military men have been deployed to the facility with strict search.

War-weary Akwa Ibom community seeks peace

War-weary people of Obot Itu in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom have indicated their willingness to live in peace with the Obodio community in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State.

Clan Head of Itu, Chief Nyong Inyang, stated this during a sensitisation exercise by the National Boundary Commission (NBC) to pave way for final demarcation of the boundary communities.

Obot Itu Clan is one of the communities in Itu that has been in boundary conflict with Ikot Offiong in Cross River State.

Inyang said the people of Obot Itu and Obodio had been living together for centuries.

He noted that since 1914 when the crisis began, the people of Obot Itu had been deprived of their means of livelihood.

He said all the court judgments given from 1914 till date between Itu and Obodio communities had always been in favour of Itu people.

“The Obot Itu and Obodio are people of the same kindred and had been living together for ages.

“We urge government to intervene for peace to reign in the area. Let justice and equity reign in the boundary communities.

“The people are molesting our women and our farmlands taken away from us,” Inyang said.

The Clan Head also appealed to the state government to repair the road in the community because of its deplorable condition, adding that the road would revive the economy of the area.

In his remarks, Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor, Mr Moses Ekpo, said the Federal Government is set to finally put to rest the boundary dispute among communities in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states by placing a demarcation mark on the boundary.

Ekpo, who was represented by a Permanent Secretary in his office Mr Nkopuruk Ekaiko, said on July 11, this year, there was a joint meeting between the warring communities of Akwa Ibom and Cross River states in order to sensitise members of the boundary communities to final boundary demarcation arrangements.

He said government would not rest on its oars until all neighbouring communities live in peace.

He appealed to the people of Obot Itu Clan and other boundary communities to remain calm and eschew violence.

“The boundary demarcation is not meant to divide communities that have been living together for decades but for administrative purposes.

“You must co-operate with government in its efforts to ensure peace and bring development to your communities’’, Ekpo said.

Ekpo assured the people that government remains committed, firm and just in

the demarcation exercise without ceding communities to one another.

The Deputy Governor, who is also the Chairman of the State Boundary Committee warned youths not to allow anyone to use them to foment trouble.

He urged the women to advise their children to desist from acts capable of disrupting the peace during the demarcation exercise.

Earlier, Mr Marcel Ukweni, Zonal Liaison Officer, South-South zone of the National Boundary Commission (NBC) said the purpose of the commission was to preach peace, as it was the only condition that guarantees meaningful development.

Ukweni reiterated the commission’s mandate to ensure that peace reigns in all boundary communities of the federation.

He said: “Boundary is an imaginary line not to demarcate people, not a wall but a mark on the ground for the administrative convenience of both Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.”

In his remark, Akwa Ibom State Chief Resident Surveyor, Mr Bala Ipalibo said a boundary was not intended to restrict movement or hinder means of livelihood.

He urged the Obot Itu Clan to co-operate with government in the demarcation exercise as it would bring meaningful development to the area.

DPR seals 16 filling stations in Akwa Ibom

The Department of Petroleum Resources ( DPR ) said it had sealed 16 filling stations for selling petrol above N145 per litre pump price.

The Operations Controller of DPR in Akwa Ibom, Mr Tamunoiminabo Sundaye, disclosed this in Eket on Monday.

Sundaye, however, said that some of the affected stations had paid the penalty and had signed undertaking with the department “to be of good behaviour’’.

He said that the department had begun close monitoring of the filling stations to ensure that they reversed their pumps to dispense petrol at N145 per litre.

He also said the agency had engaged private depot owners to ensure that they sold the product at ex-depot price to marketers.

The controller deplored the conduct of independent marketers, who accused of taking advantage of recent “upset in the oil market’’ to exploit the public by selling petrol above regulated rate.

He alleged that the marketers were creating artificial scarcity of the product in the state.

“I will not really say that there is much scarcity in Akwa Ibom because there is no queue.

He appealed to marketers to do the business in accordance with rules and regulations of the petroleum sector, saying that the present administration would not tolerate sharp practises in the industry.

According to him, any marketer caught would face the wrath of the law.

Sundaye warned marketers not to indulge in under-dispensing of the products in the state, saying that they were would face penalty.

Police to deploy 15, 000 personnel to monitor A ‘Ibom council poll

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom said on Wednesday that it would deploy 15, 000 personnel to monitor the Saturday local government council election in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, disclosed this in Uyo while briefing newsmen on the command’s preparedness for the Dec. 1 poll.

Elkana said that the command had mapped out strategies to ensure a free, fair and violence-free exercise.

He explained that at least two policemen would be in charge of each polling unit to ensure a hitch-free election process.

He said that conventional policemen without arms would be at the inner circle of the polling units while the armed ones would be at the outer circle to respond to distress calls.

“We are deploying 15, 000 policemen for the Saturday election; every polling unit will have a minimum of two police personnel.

“Depending on the total number of registered voters, some polling units will have larger numbers of police personnel,” Elkana said.

The command’s spokesman said special attention would be given to conflict-prone areas such Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun Local Government Areas which had experienced serial killings in recent times.

According to him, there will be heavy presence of security personnel in the two local government areas and other security flash points so as to nib violence in the bud.

He said police helicopters would be deployed for aerial surveillance, adding that marine police, in collaboration with the Nigeria Navy, would take care of the coastal areas.

Elkana warned politicians, especially political officeholders, not to go to the polling units with their armed details during the exercise.

He stressed that all politicians must drop their armed details at a very far distance to the polling units before entering the voting arena.

He also warned policemen attached to this group of people to behave professionally, during and after the election, stressing that any officer found wanting would be trialed and dismissed accordingly.

He said, “The police will not tolerate any armed detail violating this order. They are policemen and they should know that professionally, they cannot follow their principals to the polling units with arms.”

The police public relations officer also advised parents to monitor their children and wards, especially those ones that may likely be used by politicians as thugs.

According to him, the law enforcement agents were fully prepared to handle all political thugs during and after the elections.

“Anyone, who thinks he has firearms and wants to come out as political thugs should get the warning clear.

“The police had ordered that anyone coming to the poling units with arms should be shot at sight. If you are armed, you are no longer a civilian,” he warned.

He assured the residents that the police had also prepared for post-election activities, adding that adequate strategies had been put in place, to forestall any post-elections violence as was experienced in 2011.

Akwa Ibom residents will go to poll to elect 31 local government chairmen and 329 councilors.
