  • Akwa Ibom and sports tourism

Often, in life, we see only the result; we don’t see the processes that birthed the result. It is so with Nigeria’s qualification for the World Cup in Russia next year. The nation buried her differences in one moment of national unity to overwhelm a rather stubborn and determined Zambia national team to pick the ticket for the Mundial, the first African nation to do so. And we did it with a match to spare which in itself is historical.

Nigeria’s qualifications for continental and global football fiestas have always gone down to the wire, often resulting in the use of calculator to work out the probabilities and possibilities. Not this time. The Super Eagles landed in Russia in grand style, ahead of deadline day.  Miracle? Even if we attribute this to the miraculous, miracles, it must be stressed, do not happen by chance. They happen when the atmosphere is charged with faith and expectation.

Yes, it could have had a nudging of divinity but certain persons and factors prepared the stage for the Eagles’ triumphal flight to Russia. There is the unflinching determination of the players. They showed grit, hunger and a passion to commit all for the good of the nation. They were united in a strongly bonded rousing to national cohesion. Mikel Obi, captain of the team, echoed this force of unity when he said ahead of last weekend’s match that the team would approach the duel with one mind and one spirit: to win and get the ticket such that the last match against Algeria would be a mere formality. Mikel’s sentiments were also echoed by Paul Bassey, an accomplished sports journalist and member of the Akwa Ibom technical and planning team that coordinated activities leading up to the match. Ahead of the match, Bassey told Brila Sports Radio hosts that he saw fire in the eyes of the players during their training. He said the Eagles he watched during their training session were already seeing themselves in Russia. Prophetically, he said it is that hunger in their eyes that would make them fly over Zambia. He was right.

Then, there is the factor of the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). The decision of the NFF to stick to the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo (symbolically named the Nest of Champions), an architectural masterpiece and one of the best stadia in Africa, is highly commendable. Against the prodding to move the Eagles’ qualifying matches elsewhere, typical of Nigeria’s way of achieving federal character, NFF insisted on Uyo, a city that has become a second home to the players. Good thinking!

But much of the credit should go to Governor Udom Emmanuel who seized the opportunity of the availability of the stadium and the peace in the state to promote sport tourism and national integration. His continued willingness not only to host the Eagles but also to play a fatherly role over them was a major ingredient that got the spirit of the players fired up.

The Nest of Champions was built by his predecessor, Godswill Akpabio, at the twilight of his eventful eight-year tenure. In some states where the leaders play politics with everything including matters of development, such a sports monument could have been abandoned by the incumbent on the flimsy and hysterical ground that it was a waste of public fund. Governor Emmanuel has turned the stadium into a theatre of opportunities and possibilities in a rare display of the spirit of sports tourism. It is a testament to a leader who keeps his word.

At his inaugural ceremony on May 29, 2015, the Governor recalled his campaign promise to the people which include:  “To leverage and build on the uncommon transformation of the Governor Godswill Akpabio administration; to transform the economy of our state via industrialisation and sustained public-private sector initiative, thereby opening up opportunities for growth and improved living standards…

“To promote unity and oneness across the state, with due respect for traditional institutions and the elders of our society; to continuously develop, mobilise and empower our women and the youths via planned and well-articulated welfare and capacity-building programmes; to give all Akwa Ibom persons (both within Nigeria and the Diaspora) a proud sense of belonging – built on good governance, economic advancement and due respect for the Fundamental Human Rights of all”.

The series of sporting events hosted in the state since May 2015 has given fillip to the words of the governor on industrialization and creating opportunities for growth and development. They also showcase the character of the governor as a leader who believes in the common good as the ideal. Governor Emmanuel is not only humble to admit to the “uncommon transformation” of the state by his predecessor, he also has the good heart to state his commitment to continue in that stride.

Every good leadership must address and seek to meet the needs of the people. It is even more so in political leadership especially in Africa where a majority of the people live below the poverty line. The Akwa Ibom model of leadership fits into this mould. It thinks of the people first as the constituents of the state. At the end, it is the common, ordinary people that benefit not a few political elite.

Governor Emmanuel’s commitment to continue to deploy the Nest of Champions to showcasing Nigeria’s sporting talents has directly impacted positively on his people. During last weekend’s match, for instance, all the hotels in Uyo were fully booked. But for a stroke of good fortune, this writer would have been without hotel accommodation. Visitors who massed into the state in their thousands also had a good taste of the legendary Akwa Ibom food: from Edikaikong, Afang, Atama soups to the sumptuous Fisherman soup, visitors had a taste of them all. Yours sincerely had a go at Ekpang-nkukwo (a steamy porridge of cocoyam and water yam). Restaurants were buzzing with culinary activities. Money exchanged hands. Bars and pubs brimmed with activities; car hire and other transport services got even busier not forgetting the increased frequency of flights in and out of the state.

Some persons even stretched their gastronomic bandwidth to dare a bite of the famed 404 pepper soup (dog meat broth) and some, I must admit, got converted. Dog meat pepper soup is not only spicily delicious, we were told it has the capacity to deal with certain ailments including detoxifying the body especially when washed down with natural undiluted palm wine which the state has in good supply.

Yes, Nigeria has qualified for next year’s World Cup but the biggest beneficiaries in the final analysis are the people of Akwa Ibom State. Nigerians living and doing business in Uyo truly got more out of life this last weekend than they usually do. From the corner-shop owner to the big eateries and food vendors, there was a tangible return on investment. At the end, the state government also profits in increased tax returns. This is what happens when good leadership takes the stage. This is lacking in many states across the country.

Governors bicker with their predecessors over projects, completed or uncompleted. Some, driven by ego, even abandon such projects despite billions of public funds sunk into it. At the end, it is the people who suffer. In Akwa Ibom, there is continuity in vision, in development and in the commitment to uplift the people. One other state with this model of continuity in development is Lagos. Little wonder both states have become models in people-centric leadership. Congratulations to all Nigerians on the feat made possible by the hospitality of Akwa Ibom State.

Udom urges youths to remain patriotic

Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has called on NYSC members and other Nigerian youths to remain patriotic, especially in this period some sections were clamouring for restructuring.

Emmanuel made the call while he declared open the NYSC Pre-Mobilisation Workshop for 2017 Batch “B” Corps members in Uyo on Tuesday.

The theme of the workshop is “Consolidating the Gains of the NYSC Online Integrated System through Best Practices in Mobilisation Process.”

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Moses Ekpo, said that NYSC had played tremendous role in the evolution of the country.

He said that the scheme was established to restore the robust belief in one united Nigeria, which he said was fatally shattered by the 36-month civil war.

“I wish to acknowledge that NYSC has indeed played a tremendous role in the evolution of our nation as a stabilising factor.

“All Nigerians must ensure that the National Youth Service Corps, which is a signpost of our unity and progress, remains one of the binding chords which keep us together as a nation.

“This is the time to hearken to the clarion call for patriotism and let it resonate in your minds,” Emmanuel said.

Udom noted that the workshop would serve as a clearing house for all critical stakeholders in the mobilisation process for corps members, nationwide.

The governor stressed the need for harmonious working relationship between the NYSC Coordinators in the state and their host ministries.

He said that the state government would continue to support the scheme and ensure adequate protection of corps members posted to the state.

Earlier in his address of welcome, the Director-General of NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, said that the scheme would continue to provide platform to aggregate and accommodate suggestions for better outcome.

Kazaure said that the workshop was usually held at the commencement of every new mobilisation cycle to introduce to stakeholders, new measures and guidelines put in place for hitch-free mobilisation.

He assured that NYSC would leave no stone unturned in training and re-training of its members of staff on handling of mobilisation process, both within and outside the country.

“Let me therefore implore all participants at this workshop to see their invitation as an opportunity to contribute to the proceedings, acquire requisite information and knowledge for better performance.

“Your role is not only critical but also germane to the success of the 2017 Batch “B” mobilisation process,” he said.

The director-general commended Akwa Ibom Government and the people for the support and cooperation the scheme had enjoyed in the state.

Fashola to represent Buhari at Nigeria, Zambia match

Mr Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, will represent President Muhammadu Buhari at Saturday’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying showdown between Nigeria and Zambia in Uyo.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made the disclosure in a statement by Ademola Olajire, its spokesman, saying it learnt on Friday morning that Fashola would fly into Akwa Ibom on Saturday.

He noted that Fashola, a former governor of Lagos State, frequently hosted the grand finale of the Federation Cup (now AITEO Cup) competition and was a notable football enthusiast.

The NFF spokesman said that top officials had also confirmed that the President of the Senate, Sen. Bukola Saraki, Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung would be in attendance.

“The Chairmen of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Sports, Sen. Obinna Ogba and Rep. Goni Bukar Lawan will also be guests at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

“The host, Gov. Udom Emmanuel and members of the Akwa Ibom Cabinet, NOC President Habu Gumel and Members of the NFF Executive Committee and Management will also be present,’’ he said.

Nigeria is three points ahead of second-placed Zambia going into the penultimate day of the African qualifiers.

The Super Eagles require only the minimum win against the Chipolopolo on Saturday to join 10 other nations that have already qualified for the 32-team football showpiece in Russia in 2018.

  • Udom redeems 50,000 dollars pledge to Super Eagles – NFF

Udom redeems 50,000 dollars pledge to Super Eagles – NFF

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Emmanuel Udom, has redeemed his pledge of 10,000 dollars per goal for the matches against Cameroon to the Super Eagles.

The Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF ) made the disclosure on Thursday in Abuja.

Gov. Udom had promised the players 10,000 dollars for every goal, two days before their clash with the reigning African champions, whom the Super Eagles walloped 4-0 in Uyo on Sept.1.

They went on to earn a 1-1 draw with the Lions in Yaounde on Sept. 4.

“Gov. Udom has redeemed the pledge on Wednesday, while calling on the Super Eagles to go for the broke on Saturday and expect ‘a handsome reward’ from him.

“There will be more incentives for the Eagles if the team could earn a sixth FIFA World Cup appearance by winning on Saturday,’’ NFF’s spokesman, Ademola Olajire said in a statement.

“I know you have the quality to overcome in this important match, but I don’t want you to underrate your opponents.

“I love the professionalism and dedication to cause that you have shown since the beginning of this qualifying campaign. Those efforts have put Nigeria at the top of the table.

“I want to commend the NFF, your coaches and the support staff for the great job they have all done in support of your efforts to get to this position.

“You are just one win away from achieving your goal. The Zambians are taking this game as a do-or-die affair, so we need to be totally focused and play like soldiers,’’ it quoted the governor as saying.

The statement said Super Eagles’ Captain, Mikel John Obi, thanked the governor and pledged to him and indeed Nigerians everywhere that the team would not disappoint on Saturday.

“We very much appreciate the role Your Excellency, the Government and good people of Akwa Ibom State, the NFF and Nigerians from all walks of life have played to get us to this position in this campaign.

“We know how much this match means and we will go out there and do the job,’’ he said.

  • ‘Super Eagles going for outright win against Zambia’

‘Super Eagles going for outright win against Zambia’

The Super Eagles spokesman, Toyin Ibitoye, on Wednesday debunked the news that the team would be satisfied with a draw against Zambia, saying instead that the team would be going for an outright win.

Ibitoye said this in Lagos that the team would be aiming at defeating the Chipolopolo of Zambia in the crucial encounter in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

Nigeria is on the brink qualifying for the 2018 Mundial in Russia with an emphatic win over the African champions 4-0 and the reverse fixture in Yaoundé which ended1-1.

Nigeria will play Zambia on Saturday at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Nigeria got the first goal in Yaoundé after 30 minutes play through Moses Simon while Cameroun got their equaliser 15 minutes to go through a Vincent Aboubakar penalty.

The super eagles had started the campaign in what many soccer pundits predicted to be the group of death in a blistering form with a defeat 2-1of Zambia in Ndola to pick their first ever away win.

Goals from the premier league hotshots, Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho in the 33rd and 43rd minutes, ensured the much needed bright start, while Zambia’s Mbesuma scored in the 70th minute.

Nigeria maintained the record when they defeated the highest ranked team in Africa, the Desert Warriors of Algeria in Uyo 3-1, courtesy of a brace from Victor Moses and a goal from Mikel Obi.

However, the Gernot Rohr’s men can take a watertight lead on the summit of the Group B if they defeat Zambia on Sunday.

A win means they will be on 13 points as against Zambia who will be rooted with seven points.

On the importance of the match against the Wedson Nyirenda-tutored team from the Southern part of Africa, Ibitoye said the team’s management was leaving no stone unturned.

He said that the Super Eagles Camp at the Le Meriden Hotel, was complete save the absence of Victor Moses who is been expected on Wednesday morning.

“The camp is bubbling with the influx of the players, they all arrived early enough and they are training well. We are expecting the last person, Moses, who will arrive this ( Wednesday ) morning.

“It is not true that we are contented with a draw according to some stories circulating around and which was attributed to the coach. All we want is an outright win.

“At present, there is no injury concern in the team, Iwobi trained with others and he is 100 per cent fit as well as other players. The fitness level is perfect.

“What we are saying is that the match against Zambia may not necessarily be a whitewash as we did against Cameroun.’’

“The scoreline may or may not be the same but the points are what we need. Three full points will make us qualify in style,’’ he said.

  • PDP loses ex-chairman, oil mogul, 2,000 others to APC in Akwa Ibom

PDP loses ex-chairman, oil mogul, 2,000 others to APC in Akwa Ibom

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibiono Ibom, one of the largest local government areas in Akwa Ibom State, suffered a devastating blow over the weekend with the defection of a former chairman of the local government, Obong Emmanuel Udoh, an oil mogul, Engr. Kufre Ekong Inyang, and over 2,000 of their supporters to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

They defected at a ceremony held in Ikot Usen, the home village of the Member for Ibiono Ibom State Constituency in the House of Assembly, Barr. Ime Okon.

Receiving the defectors, the APC State Chairman, Dr. Amadu Attai assured them of equal rights with old members in line with the APC constitution and said he was impressed by the quality of old and new APC members in Ibiono Ibom.

The APC State Secretary, Dr. Effiong Etok, who is an indigene of Ibiono Ibom Ward 4 where the ceremony held, said the APC which had already taken over four of the five zones in Ibiono Ibom was set for a total takeover of the area with the defection of Obong Udoh, a political titan in the last remaining zone, Northern Ibiono Ibom.

He also praised Engr. Inyang, stating that the oil mogul was more popular than the sitting PDP Assemblyman in their village, Ikot Usen.

The APC scribe warned against rigging of the forthcoming local government elections, stating that any attempt to announce election results outside the designated areas would be resisted by Ibiono Ibom people.

A former Minister for Women Affairs, Obong Rita Akpan, who is from Uyo, called on Ibiono Ibom people to join hands with the rest of the state to effect a change in Government House in 2019.

A former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Engr. Ignatius Edet, predicted that the PDP would be wiped out in Ibiono Ibom in 2019.

“As the Bishop of politics in Ibiono Ibom, I want to tell you that there will be nothing like PDP again in 2019,” he said.

A former PDP State Secretary, Barr. Bassey Ekerete noted with joy that the APC in Ibiono Ibom was run by a collective leadership unlike the PDP where very few leaders took all the decisions without the involvement of the people.

A veteran politician in Ibiono Ibom, Elder Monday Akrah, described the APC as a party of visionaries and strong allied forces.

Other Ibiono Ibom APC leaders who spoke were the Chapter Chairman, Akparawa David Umoh and Barr. Edet Ikotidem.

Responding on behalf of the defectors, Engr. Inyang said he left PDP with his structure, Nka Iberedem Ibiono Ibom, because of impunity in that party.

Obong Udoh, who also spoke on behalf of the defectors, too condemned impunity in the PDP and assured the APC leadership of the capacity and readiness of his supporters to upturn the politics of Ibiono Ibom.

The ceremony was attended by notable politicians within and outside Ibiono Ibom including Mr. Michael James Etim and Bishop Ekpe James, former chairmen of Itu and Ibesikpo Asutan local government areas, Mr. Emmanuel Bassey, the Ibiono Ibom APC chairmanship candidate and his running mate, Mr. Ofonime Otu, Obonganwan Geraldine Etuk, Obonganwan Dora Ebong, Apostle Otoabasi Etim Asuquo, Engr. Ofonime Ekanem and APC state officers.

  • Peace, unity germane to Nigeria’s progress – Osinbajo

Peace, unity germane to Nigeria’s progress – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has advised Nigerians against breaking the bond of unity and peace existing in the country.

Osinbajo gave the advice in Uyo on Saturday at a grand ceremony organised by the Akwa Ibom government to mark the 30th anniversary of the creation of the state.

The vice president, who is on a two-day working visit to the state, urged the people to resist attempts by any group trying to push them to destroy the existing peace in the country.

“Peace is the foundation of enduring prosperity and for peace to reign everywhere in Nigeria, all of us as Nigerians must make necessary sacrifices.

“We are in a situation where we must take seriously the admonition to love one another.

“Whatever complaints we may have must not be an excuse to subvert the social order,” Osinbajo said.

He assured Nigerians that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is ever ready to listen to all genuine complaints from any group.

“The Buhari government is prepared to engage and listen patiently to all sections of the country.

“But you as individuals also have a major role to play.

“Citizens everywhere should not sit idle when misguided elements choose to recklessly destroy the common bond of brotherhood and friendship that has put us together for decades,” Osinbajo said.

The vice president, who was the special guest of honour at the event, praised Gov. Udom Emmanuel for his visionary leadership in the state.

He descibed Akwa Ibom as a state with great history, which creation 30 years ago started with the agitation by Ibibio State Union for the creation of COR state.

He stated that Akwa Ibom is one of the fastest growing states in the country.

He assured that the Federal Government would support the state to develop the Ibaka seaport.

“Provisions have been made in the current budget of Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) for the development of the Ibaka  Deep Seaport,” he said.

Earlier, Gov. Emmanuel had expressed appreciation to former military President Ibrahim Babangida for creating Akwa Ibom State on Sept. 23, 1987.

Emmanuel also acknowledged the efforts made by the former governors of the state made to lay a solid foundation laid for its growth.

“The bush paths had become highways, our villages had turned into metropolis, I am here to consolidate on the achievements of all the past leaders,” Emmanuel said.

He said that the creation of the state was  a divine plan.

Emmanuel, therefore, urged the people of Akwa Ibom to unite for the development of the state irrespective of  their ethnic and political differences.

Speaking on behalf of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, the Ekiti Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, congratulated the Akwa Ibom people for the unity among them.

He also congratulated Gov. Emmanuel for the laudable projects he initiated toward the economic development of the state.

Fayose said that the governor deserved a second term.

In his speech on behalf of National Assembly members from Akwa Ibom, the Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, said that the strength of Nigeria depended on its large population.

“We in the National Assembly will not support division, we stand for one Nigeria. We will not support disintegration,” Akpabio said.

Akpabio, who is the immediate past governor of the state, said that the Akwa Ibom people were praying that the will of God to be done in Nigeria.

He commended Gov. Emmanuel for laying foundation for the industrialisation of the state.

Speaking on behalf of former governors of Akwa Ibom, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (rtd), noted that a lot of positive things had happened in Akwa Ibom since its creation.

Nkanga, who was the third military administrator and first indigenous governor, called on the Federal Government to restructure Nigeria based on true federalism.

He lauded Gov. Emmanuel for putting in place structures aimed at speeding up industrialisation of the state.

Many dignitaries including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and the former governor of Akwa Ibom, Obong Victor Attah were at the event.

  • EFCC, Akwa Ibom clash over Akpabio’s probe for alleged N108.1b fraud

EFCC, Akwa Ibom clash over Akpabio’s probe for alleged N108.1b fraud

For seven times, the Akwa Ibom State Government has blocked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from investigating former Governor Godswill Akpabio.

The Minority Leader of the Senate is under probe for alleged diversion of public funds and corrupt practices reported to the EFCC through several petitions by Leo Ekpenyong, a lawyer.

He is expected to be quizzed on how N108.1 billion state funds were allegedly to have been diverted.

Akpabio was also alleged to have in 2013 paid N566, 883, 728.66, N441, 808,081.90 and N392, 631,943.37 as gifts to a new generation bank.

The investigation is being handled  by the Counter-Terrorism and General Investigation Section of the anti-graft agency.

Ekpenyong claimed that Akpabio allegedly devised a means of enriching himself at the expense of the state.

Other petitioners’ names were not disclosed by the anti-graft agency “following intimidation and threats to their lives”.

The allegations against Akpabio border on award of bogus contracts to cronies who used the proceeds to buy several properties in Lagos and Abuja.

    The allegations include the

    • alleged withdrawal of N18 billion fraudulently from the state’s Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) in tranches of N10 million and above in a surreptitious manner to conceal their dishonest intention;
    • spending  of over N50 billion state funds by the former governor during the last general elections; and alleged
    • withdrawal of N18 billion from the state’s coffers under the guise of special services, reception of very important guests and sundry items.

The ex-governor is also under probe for allegedly acquiring  some  assets through surrogates, including  a multi-billion naira mansion at Plot 5, Ikogosi Spring Close, off Katsina-Ala Crescent, Maitama-Abuja;  a multi-billion naira mansion at Plot 28 Colorado Close, Maitama, Abuja; 22 Probyn Road, Ikoyi, Lagos;  Plot 23 Olusegun Aina Street, Parkview, Lagos and a multi-billion naira 25-storey building at Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The EFCC said its efforts to interrogate some state officials had been stalled by the government.

The anti-graft agency said it made seven requests for the release of some officials, but none was honoured.

A document obtained from the commission reads: “On March 7, 2017, the Commission had written to the Secretary to the State Government asking for the release of Mr. Effiong Efiakedoho, permanent secretary, Ministry of Housing and Special Duties, to appear before the EFCC on March 13. He was summoned specifically in respect of matters related to Four Point by Sheraton Hotel, Raffia City Plaza, A 342 Highway. There was no response.

“  An 8th May 2017 letter requesting the Accountant General of the State to appear at the Idiagbon House on May 18 was also ignored. The Accountant General was specifically summoned in respect of an aspect of the investigation relating to a company, Sindeng Nigeria Limited.

“The Commissioner for Works was also invited through a letter of 19th May, 2017 and asked to report to the Commission’s zonal office in Port Harcourt in respect of a road construction contract awarded to Nigturks Civil Technologies Limited. He too failed to honour the invitation.

“ A May 26, 2017, the request to the Secretary to the State Government to release the Accountant General of the state for interrogation on June 5, over the Commercial Agriculture Credit Scheme, was also ignored.

“The Commission in two separate letters on June 7, 2017 re-invited the SSG and Efakedoho, PS Housing and Special Duties; and the Accountant General for interrogation June 19. For the second time, the three state functionaries failed to honour the invitation.”

It was learnt that  the EFCC wrote to the Secretary to the State Government in 2016, requesting for the release of some officials of the Civil Service for questioning.

The Attorney-General “resorted to filing suits against the commission with a view to stalling investigation”.

    The suits include:

    • A 12th July 2016 concurrent originating summons at Akwa Ibom High Court, Ikot Ekpene, seeking for the interpretation of Sections 124, 125,126, 127,128 of the 1999 Constitution for declarative and injunctive reliefs against EFCC.
    • On 7th February 2017 Akwa Ibom AG filed a Notice of Appeal in Calabar Division of the Court of Appeal against  the ruling of the Akwa Ibom High Court 2 which dismissed preliminary objection in EFCC’s favour.
    • The AG of Akwa Ibom on March 2017 filed a new writ of summons at the Federal High Court, Uyo Division.

“Apart from the legal sandbags, intimidation is also being employed to frustrate the investigation as even officials of the state who were willing to testify against the former governor are said to have chickened out.

“Even one of  those who allegedly wrote a petition against the former governor was quoted by a source to have said he was going to withdraw the petition.”

Responding to a question, an EFCC source said withdrawal of petition would not affect the investigation.

”This bus has left the station. There is nothing that anybody can do to stop the investigation at this stage. Whatever challenges we have can only delay the process but the investigation is on course”, he added.

But the Akwa Ibom State Government, through a June 28, 2017 letter signed by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice,  Uwemedimo Nwoko, explained why the officials could not be released to the EFCC.

He said a suit was pending before the Federal High Court , Uyo where he was  challenging the power of the Commission to investigate activities of the state .

The letter reads: “It has become imperative to remind your Commission (The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)) that you are a party to the above mentioned suit, which is still pending at the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Uyo Division.

“We note with appalling distaste, the sad fact that while the said case is pending in Court, your Commission is still continuing to exhibit disrespect to the Honourable Court by issuing series of letters of invitation to some of the officers of the Akwa Ibom State Government for questioning. Herein attached are some of the said letters for reference.

“I wish to further remind you that once an action or dispute has been submitted to a court of law, the parties to the suit are bound to show respect to the Court. There should be no usurpation by any person or authority of the functions and powers of the Court to decide the case in accordance with extant laws.

“Any conduct which is calculated or may directly or indirectly prejudice ore undermine the public confidence in the institution of the judiciary or castrate and render the Court impotent must as of Constitutional necessity be viewed as grossly intolerable and out rightly reprehensible.

“For what it is worth, let me again remind your Commission that establishing the public image of gaining notoriety for treating the Court of law with contempt is not a virtue particularly for a body that is a creation of statute such as yours.

“We demand that your Commission forestall indelible fatal injury to your public perception.

“Finally, we as a government demand very strongly that your office cease forthwith any further actions against the government of Akwa Ibom State and its officials pending the just determination of the case in Suit No. FHC/UY/CS/20/2017.

“The continued harassment of the Akwa Ibom State government and its officials are distractions, the intolerability of which we state without any equivocation.”

    Uyo tragedy on my mind

Ex-presidential spokesman Dr. Reuben Abati woke me up from slumber a few days back with his column on churches in Akwa Ibom. In the well-put together piece, Abati said churches in the state were becoming more or less government parastatals.

There is something the piece did to me for reasons I am yet to figure out. It reminded me of last December’s tragedy at the Reigners Bible Church, Uyo.

The piece raised a poser in my mind: Will we ever see the White Paper based on the report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry received on July 7 by Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel?

Justice Umoekoyo Essang, who chaired the panel, presented the report to the governor at the Executive Council Chamber, Government House Uyo. After receiving the report, Emmanuel said: “I want to thank you for this great job that you have done and to assure you once again that the recommendations of this report would be taken seriously. We would do everything to implement and prevent future occurrence of this tragedy. May this affliction never occur the second time”.

Emmanuel used the occasion to commiserate with families of those who lost their loved ones in the tragedy.

He said: “Things of this nature should go beyond politics. When the incidence occurred it did not select members of a political party, it did not only affect a particular denomination, race or colour. It was a tragedy that affected all. It’s unfortunate that people decided to politicise a tragedy of this nature. Such people do not deserve to express opinion in the public.”

The report was submitted a little over six months after the  Uyo tragedy. One of those it took away was Josephine Effiom.

Emmanuel survived by the grace of God. Effiom, who was a polytechnic student, a friend said, “was one of the first three brilliant chaps in my class”. Her seat at the polytechnic lecture theatre is now occupied by another, a sad reminder to her course mates that a brilliant soul had been wasted.

Effiom was the face of a tragedy in a house of God, where fear should have been the last thing on anyone’s mind. The founder of the church was to have his ordination as a bishop. He is not a small fry. So, the church was jam-packed. Emmanuel came with some of his commissioners and aides. Some of the commissioners were new in the State Executive Council at the time having been sworn-in December 1, last year.

Thirty minutes into the governor’s arrival hell literally came down. No thanks to human error, the church’s iron pillars gave way and the blue roofs came thumping down. Of course on people! And Effiom died. And many others too. An account even said someone was cut into two by the iron pillars. A policeman who reportedly saved the governor is now six feet below. And some others broke their necks, their limbs and their back. The founder of the church, Pastor Akan Weeks, had his leg broken.

As typical of our nation, no one appears sure of how many people died. The day after, we saw figures as high as 160 in the media. It was attributed to the Chief Medical Director of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, who later denied it. Police gave the figure as 29.

Commissioner for Health Dominic Ukpong said 26 people died in the unfortunate incident. His words: “Death toll now 26. Patients in the hospitals are 168. Total out patients are 50. Total deaths 26. Nine hospitals have the following patients. UUTH, 28 patients; Ibom Specialist Hospital Uyo, 70 patients; Sifon Clinic, 9 patients; Lifecare Clinic, 24 patients; Premiers Clinic, 9 patients; St Lukes Hospital, 22 patients; Gateway Medical Centre, 2 patients; Uwah Mfon Clinic, 1 patient. First Line Clinic, 1 patient. Alma Clinic and Surgery, 2 patients.”

And no one is willing to give the names of the dead. Thanks to Effiom’s classmates who revealed her identity, she would have died anonymously!

This tragedy turned the University of Uyo Teaching hospital (UUTH), Anua General Hospital, Life Care Hospital and the Ibom Specialist Hospital into Mecca of some sort. In these hospitals, those who defeated death received treatment to heal their broken necks, arms, back and heads. Tears from families of those recuperating now rented the air in these hospitals for weeks. The story at the mortuary sections of these hospitals was grimmer.

For students of the University of Uyo and the Uyo City Polytechnic, which are believed to have been worst hit by the disaster, reality looked like dream.

Emmanuel’s men who crawled out of death’s hole had interesting testimonies to share. His Chief Press Secretary Ekerette Udoh said an iron rod nearly cut his neck, but eventually hit him on the back. The cap of his left knee was broken and pains travelled all over his body.

The Commissioner for Information, Charles Udoh who joined the State Executive Council only some one week earlier, thought he was watching a movie when the pillars started coming down. He was on his way out of the church to catch a flight when tragedy struck. He would have been out but protocol demanded that he told the governor before vanishing from the church hall. It was this protocol-induced task he was accomplishing when death almost took him away like Effiom and the others whose true figures and names we may never know. He had to run here and there to prevent the iron pillars from turning him to a candidate for the mortuary.

Nollywood actor Ekere Nkanga, who had acted almost all roles imaginable and was some sort of bad man in Emem Isong’s ‘Weekend Getaway’, was humbled when he had to wade through bodies to safety.

“Shortly after the governor and his entourage and the bishops took their seats, the next thing I heard was the bang from the falling iron. By the time the iron came down, I noticed that people from the safe areas were  running to the centre, where I was sitting,” he said, adding:  “I hid under some people. A few seconds later, as I was trying to get up, the body of a man cut into two and fell on me. There were other corpses on me. I looked out for my brother but I couldn’t find him. Later, I found my phone. I called the Chairman, Uyo Local Government Area, to mobilise rescue officials to the venue.”

He managed not to have a direct impact with falling rods, but he later discovered his neck was broken.

“The impact of diving must have been responsible for my broken neck,” he said.

He wore a neck collar and was under observation in the hospital for some time. Effiom and others would have gladly given testimonies if Nkanga’s fate had befallen them.

Pastor Weeks argued it was the devil fighting back and he urged Christians to unite and not see it as his battle alone. The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) said the tragedy was caused by shoddiness.

My final take: Those who overtly or covertly contributed to the tragedy must be punished. The Reigners Bible Church Int’l Inc tragedy must not happen again. One way to do this is to implement the recommendations of the Justice Essang panel. Anything short of this will be a disservice to the memories of the dead.

Adieu, the Precious one who called me Master

    The late Dikewoha

The last time he sent me a story was August 28. His mail came in 2.23pm. In the afternoon of September 4, Shola O’Neil, the big man who oversees this newspaper’s operations in the Southsouth, called me. He had a bad news: Precious Dikewoha, whose story on a group faulting the Federal Government’s figure of expenditure on projects, was in coma. I was shocked. He gave me a few details and I was hoping Precious, who loved to call me ‘Master’ or ‘Oga’, would pull through.

But Precious left that night. I cannot remember if I ever met this remarkable soul from Ubima, Rivers State during one of those trainings correspondents like him came for at our corporate headquarters where I operate from, but we connected on phone regularly. He was a jolly good fellow. He never shied away from doing his assignments and he was down-to-heart.

At a time like this, all I have to say is that we are all passengers in this bus called life. We will all disembark at some point. Precious has gotten to his bus stop and has alighted. It is a pity a man who lost his parent when he was 14 has left his daughter when she is just two. Only God can help his wife see through this baby who gave him so much joy while the journey lasted.

I lack the right words to say to his wife Nkechiyere with whom he had to wait five years after their marriage to have their daughter. No one but God can console her and his family and I pray they are comforted by Him.

Sleep well Precious; your passing is a reminder to those of us still in the bus that we will sure alight at our own time whether we like it or not.
