Supreme Court judgements are celebration of impunity – TMG

The Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) has described the various Governorship elections judgement being churned out by the Supreme Court as a celebration of Impunity.

The group in a statement issued in Abuja Friday and signed by its Chairman, Ibrahim Zikirullahi also described the various judgements as a slew of verdicts.

He said what the supreme courts now give judgments and not justice.

The TMG said in the face of unrepentant attempts to subvert the will of the people in a good number of the cases, the court has curiously turned a blind eye.

TMG said, “For us, it is absolutely shocking that the Supreme Court has decided to act as if it exists in another planet.

“TMG is perturbed by the strange legal reasoning that has informed the blank cheque that the court has given to election riggers.

“We make bold to say that while the legal premise behind these judgments is best known to the apex court, the open reward for electoral impunity does not resonate with the Nigerian people.

“As the foremost election observation coalition in the country, we see the Supreme Court judgments as clear cut attempts at legalising electoral robberies.

“These judgments, particularly on Rivers and Akwa Ibom States, have merely given judicial imprimatur to the damaging mind set of rapacious politicians who would stop at nothing in their bid to subvert the will of the people.

“What these judgments have effectively done is to ridicule Nigeria in the eyes of the international community, while diminishing our country’s stature in the comity of lovers of democracy around the world.

“Painfully, the biggest losers are the ordinary people in the states who have been denied their democratic choices on account of the violence and impunity that characterised the polls in those states.

” In the end, what the Supreme Court has succeeded in doing is to spit on the graves of all those innocent Nigerians who lost their lives as a result of the activities of those hell bent on subverting the will of the people.

“On behalf of the scores of Nigerians, whose lives were cut shut by the activities of election riggers, we take solace in the fact that even beyond the justice of the Supreme Court; there is the justice of the Almighty.

“And in due course, those who wilfully killed and maimed in the desperate bid to capture power, would be held to account on state governorship elections recently handed down by the Supreme Court.

“The disturbing trend in these judicial pronouncements is in the fact that the apex court has elected to give judgments, and not justice.

“In the face of unrepentant attempts to subvert the will of the people in a good number of the cases, the court has curiously turned a blind eye,” the statement said.

  • Akwa Ibom collaborates with Ghana on cocoa production

The Akwa Ibom government has reaffirmed its commitment to making cocoa farmers play a key role in the economic sector of the country.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Matthew Nathan Ekaette, while exchanging views with the Paramount Ruler of Ini, Ntoeng Effiong Udo Akpan, at his palace last week, said Governor Udom Emmanuel had discovered cocoa which is like gold in Ini Local Government Area.

Ekaette, accompanied by Dr. Abraham Kay and four technical experts from John Kouffor Foundation, Ghana, noted that the government is committed to changing the investment direction of the state to sustain agriculture and give Akwa Ibom a place in the global production map.

According to him, a farmer should be one of the financially buoyant individuals in his community; be able to send his children to the best schools and contribute to the society from his resources as a farmer.

He assured that the Emmanuel administration would reverse the trend, saying that beyond getting cocoa farmers to do their jobs, they would get inputs on how best to handle issues.

Ekaette said the on-going cocoa revolution in the state promised to be a major source of revenue to the state government because it had brought in experts from Ghana to help the farmers increase their production.

“Cocoa production in the state is low and the pruning exercise is aimed at improving cocoa yields from the present 300kg per hectare to 600kg per hectare between 2016-2017; from 600kg/hectares to 900kg/hectares between 2017-2018; from 900kg/hectare to 1000kg/hectare between 2018-2019; from 1000kg/hectare to 1500kg/hectare between 2019 -2020,” he stated.

Declaring open the zoning/mapping exercise, Dr. Kay observed that the potential of cocoa farmers  in the state are far more than what they have in Ghana. During the pruning, farmers who were trained on maintenance operations using Farmers Field School (FFS) model, expressed gratitude to Emmanuel for initiating the training programme for farmers in the 20 cocoa producing communities.

The pruning covered 13 local government areas.

These were Ini, Ikono, Uruan, Essien Udim, Abak, Ukanafun, Etim Ekpo, Mkpat Enin Ibiono Ibom, Uyo, Ikot Ekpene, Etinan and Obot Akara. The remaining eight local government areas: Ikot Abasi, Itu, Nsit Ubium, Ibesikpo Asutan, Nsit Ibom, Oruk Anam and Onna will be covered by the end of January 2016, he said.

Hoodlums kill two Policemen in Akwa Ibom

Hoodlums in Eastern Obolo Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State opened fire on a police station and killed two policemen.

The identity of the two policemen could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report but our reporter gathered the hoodlums killed a police inspector and a corporal who were on duty on Tuesday.

The cause of the hoodlums’ grievances which led to the killing of the two policemen could not be ascertained as elders and indigenes of the area claimed no knowledge of the violence.

The community had in recent time warned oil firms to stay out of their area owing to marginalisation and non-adherence to the Memorandum of Understanding reached between the community and the oil firms.

A traditional ruler in the area, Chief M.W. Ujile, told our correspondent that he saw the situation as it is.

He added that he did not know what might have propelled the hoodlums to take such drastic measures against the police.

His words: “The situation is just as you have said.  We don’t know what actually happened.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Cordelia Nwawe, ASP, confirmed the killing of the two policemen to our reporter.

ASP Nwawe decried the killing, saying it was uncalled for.

According to her, the police are in Eastern Obolo just as in any other places in the country to protect lives and property. She noted that the hoodlums by killing the two policemen, they had gone just too far.

She said: “It is sad for anyone to vent anger on policemen who are there to protect lives and property. We condemn the actions of the hoodlums. The police, will, however, fish out the culprits.”

  • Akwa Ibom govt urges communities to end land crisis

The Akwa Ibom State government has called for a ceasefire between the warring communities of Ikot Akpan Udo village in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area and Amazaba group of villages in Eastern Obolo. The communities had been embroiled in boundary disputes since 2008.

Deputy Governor Moses Ekpo, who made the call during a meeting between representatives of Ikot Akpan Udo and Amazaba at the old Executive Chambers’ of Government House, Uyo, warned the  communities to keep the peace in the area while awaiting government’s White Paper on the matter.

Ekpo wondered what could have instigated the fresh disputes when the matter was awaiting government’s White Paper after a Commission of Inquiry had already made its recommendations to the government.

The deputy governor urged the two communities to resolve their differences in the interest of Akwa Ibom people, saying that the final resolution of the crisis would serve as an example to other warring communities in the state.

“You cannot develop a society when those who live there are virtually at war with themselves to the extent they spill blood”, said Ekpo.

He condemned the recent clash in the two communities, adding that “Land belongs to God and God alone. We are only given a portion to live; man does not know how long he has to live but he has to leave and bequeath it to another person.”

Ekpo, who urged them to live in peace like brothers and sisters, said Emmanuel was worried about the disputes. He called on the communities to assist government in bringing the needed development as the creation of local government areas was not to separate people but to bring development.

The meeting was attended by the local government Chairmen of Ikot Abasi and Eastern Obolo Local Government Areas, the Paramount Rulers of the two areas, the village heads of the communities, youth leaders and the Divisional Police Officers and others.

  • Akwa Ibom NLC disagrees with govt on promotion without arrears

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Akwa Ibom State Council has cleared the air on its position on the recent approval and release of promotion of workers in the state.

The immediate past administration  did not implement the promotions and payments due to workers before handing over.

The promotion of 10,352 public servants, which Governor Emmanuel approved last month covering year 2011 through 2014, were released but without the accompanying payments.

But the state NLC challenged the government to pay the accompanying promotion with the arrears. Delayed promotions, the NLC said, is usually accompanied by arrears dated- back to when such promotions were due, as regular promotion is the legitimate right of civil and public servants.

In a statement by the NLC signed by the Chairman, Comrade Etim Ukpong, and made available to newsmen in Uyo, last week, the labour union said it has at no point negotiated or agreed with the government on promotion without arrears.

The union expressed disappointment that the state government would unilaterally take decisions on issues concerning workers in the state without consulting with labour to take worker’s welfare into consideration.

“The NLC, Akwa Ibom State Council hereby states categorically that at no time whatsoever did it enter into any agreement with government nor sign any memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of the state to the effect that promotions of those years should be released to workers without the corresponding arrears.

“While the NLC, Akwa Ibom State council demands that letters of promotion to workers be accompanied with arrears of promotion as is legitimate, the NLC urges workers to disregard any insinuations to the contrary”, the statement added.

The Labour union frowned at rumours making the rounds that it has approved the release of 2011 to 2014 promotions to Civil and Public Servants in the state without arrears, and insisted that such promotions are usually associated with arrears as workers had already worked to be so rewarded.

The state government has released the 2011 to 2014 promotions for public servants without arrears.

The absence of the long-awaited promotion arrears has thrown civil and public servants in the state into lamentation as they complained that such promotions were never announced without associated benefits.

    •FRSC advises officers on outbreak

AKWA Ibom State government yesterday convened an emergency meeting on how to curtail the Lassa fever, following reports that three persons have contracted the virus, with one confirmed dead.

The confirmation of the disease puts Akwa Ibom as the 18th state to be affected.

Commissioner for Health Dr. Dominic Ukpong, told the meeting that the victims were diagnosed with the virus at different locations in the state.

He warned residents of the imminent health danger posed by Lassa fever and called on them to take precautions against further spread.

Also yesterday, Lagos Commissioner for Health Dr. Jide Idris enjoined residents to seek medical assistance once they notice any of the symptoms associated with Lassa fever.

Idris said: “While Ribavin – the drug for treating Lassa fever – is available, its efficacy after five days of contracting Lassa fever cannot be guaranteed. So, it is good to commence treatment promptly once it is confirmed as Lassa fever.

“The ministry is engaging pupils, students and teachers as change agents, so they can spread to parents, guardians and people at home, the correct message on Lassa fever.”

He spoke at a sensitisation seminar for teachers of public primary/secondary schools and proprietors of private schools on the disease and infection prevention at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.

Chief Educator, Ministry of Health Mrs. Omowunmi George said the synergy with schools was to ensure the teachers know what to do should any child come to school with abnormal temperature or fever.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged its officers and men to report any symptoms of Lassa fever to the nearest hospital or health centre.

The Health Officer, Zone 2, Lagos Headquarters, Dr. Peter Airiavbere, spoke at the in-house meeting for officers of the zone.

He advised the officers to be on the lookout for any symptom of the disease and report it immediately.

Some of the symptoms, according to the Dr. Airiavbere, include nasal bleeding, bleeding through the anus and mouth, adding that people usually get infected with the Lassa virus after being exposed to the disease, while personal transmission occurs through contact with infected persons.

  • Akwa Ibom politics as quest for oil money

The All Progressive Congress (APC) as a party promised Nigerians a change expected to take the country to a new enviable height. It was a promise that has solutions to all the problems confronting us as a nation, and above all, a pact to do things differently.

The campaign was intense, the politicking was fiery, the scheming was deft and one would expect that once electioneering is over, all parties would forge an alliance towards moving the country forward. But that is not the case. It is disheartening that what we have witnessed in our polity is an unchecked political desperation that is unhealthy for the people and economy.

The insatiable quest for the soul of the South-South region by the APC has bought a new dimension of volatility to our politics and has allegedly left a huge dent on the independence and integrity of the Judiciary.

This is not a write up to dwell on that but to highlight the activities of the “Change Agents”.

Akwa Ibom, blazed the trail when on 22 October 2015 the state’s Election Petition Tribunal invalidated the election results in 18 out of the 31 Local Government Areas in the state.  Rivers State was next in line just four days after when the election petition tribunal sacked Governor Nyesom Wike and ordered fresh election within 90 days. Few days after the pronouncement of the tribunal, the Supreme Court dismissed the case filed by Wike against the sitting of the tribunal which had four days earlier nullified his mandate. In furtherance of what seems as a “political clandestine operation”, the Rivers Election Petition Tribunal also sacked 19 People’s Democratic Party members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The December 5, 2015 gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State during which voters turned out to either return Governor Seriake Dickson, the incumbent governor, or Timipre Sylva, who is the APC’s flag bearer (a one-time governor of the state) was marred with violence and declared inconclusive. Thankfully that has been resolved with the re-run of January 9, 2015 which produced Dickson as the governor-elect.

Even in its loss of grip, the PDP has strongly maintained its control of all the South-South states leaving APC in a limbo with no oil producing state as it is common belief that any party which controls an oil producing state has limitless access to its petrodollars, regardless of the falling international oil prices. With Delta State being an obvious no go area, the APC has aggressively focused its quest at Rivers and Akwa Ibom states leaving one without a doubt the reason for the dire need to control the states and the endless propaganda that come with that.

Recall the three states have the largest deposit of oil wells in Nigeria and are obvious “Cash Cows” any day. Need I say more that the quest for Akwa Ibom is for acquiring or rather usurping common wealth of the state. What further emboldened my assertion was the sack of the Managing Director and the two other Directors of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Although Section 3 of the Act of the National Assembly which established the Niger Delta Development Commission somewhat placed the authority to hire and fire on the President and Commander in Chief, the grounds on which such can be done was clearly spelt out, the sacking of the Managing Director, Mr. Bassey Dan-Abia, and the two Executive Directors for Finance and Projects was absurd.

At the time of their sack, neither the Managing Director nor the two other Directors were convicted of a felony or any offence involving dishonesty or fraud. They were not found to be of unsound mind, or incapable of carrying out their duties nor found guilty of serious misconduct in relation to their duties which should warrant their dismissal from duty.

The immediate appointment of an Acting Managing Director, pending the appointment of substantive board only validates the desperation for control of the soul of Niger Delta and oil producing states as a soft landing for the party.

Many people think that since the NDDC Board is meant to be non-partisan, the head of the body should not have been one with political interests. While the APC saw no wrong in the sack, everything was wrong and immoral about it. But everyone seems to be keeping quiet over the sacks which have grave implications for the region. One would have expected top government officials, community leaders and other interest groups to condemn the dismissal of these managers without reason. We have heard no such foul cries in this instance.

The undue interference, subtle plot to control the judiciary over the outcome of the appeal against the pronouncement of the election petition tribunal for Akwa Ibom, the judicial summersaults, and actions (which the sack of the Managing Director and two others at NDDC is one) are moves to control the resource of the nation, not being unmindful of the large oil wells of Akwa Ibom state.

Surely, APC has to be in control of these states; especially Akwa Ibom which has the highest amount of oil wells in the country in a bid to recoup what it spent in prosecuting the last elections.

One thing is sacrosanct; the battle for the soul of Akwa Ibom is not about bringing the much touted change to the good people of Akwa Ibom in terms of better governance and greater dividends of democracy, but a change in the control of the management of the state’s natural resources and wealth.

It is apparent that from the analysis above, what we are witnessing in Akwa Ibom State is a part of a grand orchestrated plot to control a state flowing with black gold. All we are witnessing right now in our polity and the absurd pronouncements from the election petition tribunals and Appeal Court for most South-South states is all about the quest for oil money.

  • Effective policing has reduced crime, attracted investors to Akwa Ibom, says Emmanuel

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has hailed the security agencies for the maintenance of peace and the protection of lives and property of the citizens. These, he said, had reduced crime and attracted investors to the State.

The governor spoke at the end-of-year-get-together organised by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command at the Police Officers Mess, Uyo, the state capital.

Emmanuel commended Police Commissioner  Murktar Manni and the officers of the command for their vigilance and dogged surveillance, which, he said, had  kept criminality at near zero level in the state.

He stressed that every government was anchored on security in order to guarantee the safety of its citizens.

He expressed appreciation to the officers and men of the police for dedication to their responsibilities, pointing out that the men had gallantly performed their duties without compromise even in the face of  mounting challenges.

Emmanuel, who described the police as partners in the development of the state, assured them of increased collaboration to enable the force keep criminality at bay and urged the officers not to relent in their efforts but strive to attain higher height in their endeavours by ensuring that the near crime-free situation currently experienced in the state is sustained.

Manni attributed the feat attained in combating crime in the state to the support of the Emmanuel administration and expressed appreciation for the support stating that the get-together was an avenue for the officers and men to interact on a lighter mood and brace up to face the challenges of the profession.

The police boss thanked God for the safety of the officers in their various operations and prayed for the repose of the soul of those who lost their lives in the course of the duty. He assured that the welfare of the officers remains a priority of the command.

While calling on the officers to inculcate the spirit of teamwork in their operations, the police commissioner stated that security was not done in isolation and solicited for more cooperation from individuals as well as corporate organisations to enable the Force achieve effective policing.

The party, which had in attendance members of the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), featured performances from the Police Brass Band as well as Police Theatre Troupe.
