  • Akwa Ibom SSG’s office sealed off

    •Workers asked to vacate premises

Security operatives, allegedly acting on the orders of Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio, yesterday sealed off the office of the Secretary to the State Government, Umana Umana.

Workers were searched and asked to vacate the premises.

The Permanent Secretary in the SGG’s office, George Akpabio, was transferred to the Ministry of Transport.

Akpabio’s transfer, according to a Government House source, was conveyed to him by security operatives.

A worried Akpabio was said to have asked the security personnel: “Just like that? Is that how they move a permanent secretary?”

Both Umana and Akpabio were said to be in Abuja at the time of the incident.

The decision to remove the SSG, according to sources, may have been his interest to contest the 2015 governorship race.

The governor is said not to be pleased with Umana’s plan.

Umana, who is from Uyo Senatorial District of Nsit Ubium, is one of the nominees for Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Other nominees are Special Adviser, Bureau of Technical Matters, Etido Inyang, an Ikot Ekpene man and Loveday Ekuyok, a native of Eastern Obolo Local Government Area.

The SSG, while declaring interest for in 2015 governorship race, said it had become imperative to make known his position to assuage the overwhelming wish of the greater majority of Akwa Ibom people.

But the governor has always said only God will determine his successor.

It was gathered that the relationship between Akpabio and Umana turned sour last Friday when Umana was prevented from attending a meeting the governor convened with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state executives.

According to a Government House source, the governor said he did not want to attend a meeting with any governorship aspirant “so that it won’t look as if the party is supporting the aspirant.”

The source said: “The governor conveyed a meeting on Friday with the party and when the SSG and Commissioner for Special Duties, Emmanuel Enoidem, went, they were prevented from entering.

“The governor said he wanted to meet with only the state PDP state executives that he did not want to attend any meeting with any governorship aspirant again so that it won’t look as if the party is supporting anybody.

“With that embarrassment, when the Senate President came to declare open the Senate Press Corps retreat in Uyo, Akpabio was not pleased with the SSG’s absence because no official reason was given for his absence.

“On Sunday evening after the Senate President left, it was gathered that the governor had purportedly told the SSG to resign but the SSG did not.

“So yesterday morning, mobile policemen stormed the SSG’s office and locked the place.”

Neither the Akwa Ibom State Government nor Umana has made any official statement on the incident.

  • Akwa Ibom trains 4,500 women in commercial agric

Akwa Ibom State has so far trained about 4,500 women in commercial agriculture under the Women Agro-Empowerment Development Programme, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Godwin Afangideh, has said.

Afangideh said the present administration was committed and determined to develop the agriculture sector.

“We have trained and empowered about 4,500 women with N250,000 each for commercial agriculture under the women agro-empowerment development programme in agriculture.

“This will let us explore, use available opportunities and resources to thrive and develop the agriculture sector of the state and country,” he said.

The commissioner also said 4,000 youths were trained with N500,000 each under the integrated farming scheme across the state.

He said the state government had provided land for people to boost the industrial sector in the state.

Afangideh said the policy thrust of Governor Godswill Akpabio’s administration is to create an enabling environment for industrialisation to provide employment opportunities for the youths in the state.

“The governor is excited and interested in agriculture’s development. But we also have industrial estates in Uyo, Eket, Ikot-Abasi and Ikot Ekpene local government areas (LGAs), as well as abundant land for those who want to set up an industry,’’ he said.

The commissioner said when the 191 megawatts Ibom Power Plant (IPP) project is completed, it would help in driving the industrialisation process of the state.

On the development of infrastructure, he said the state government had built four flyover bridges and 28 other bridges in the state in the last six years.

Afangideh said Akwa Ibom has the best road network among states in the South-South part of the country.

He said about 1,600 communities have also been linked to the National Power Grid, adding that about 87 per cent of the communities are connected to electricity in the state.

  • I’ll run in 2015, says Akwa Ibom SSG

The Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Umana Okon Umana, has ended his silence on his 2015 governorship aspiration.

Umana, who spoke with reporters in Uyo, the state capital, yesterday said he would contest the 2015 election.

He said it has become important to make known his position to assuage the wishes of Akwa Ibom people, who urged him to take a position on the matter.

“I have decided to make public my intention to run for the office of governor in response to the overwhelming pressure from the people of the three senatorial districts of the state for me to declare my interest in the race. I wish to assure our people that I will run for governor in 2015.”

When asked why it took him so long to officially make a pronouncement on the matter, Umana said: “I had to consult widely on the issue.

“I was also mindful of the fact that I had a job to perform, which I needed to give my all.

“But as you can see, 2015 is just by the corner and I have to begin the normal consultations, while waiting for the official flag-off of campaigns by my party.”

He called on the people to continue to support the Godswill Akpabio administration, adding that the administration will continue to justify the enormous confidence the people have in it.

  • Akwa Ibom ‘child-witches’ still endangered

    Akwa Ibom ‘child-witches’ still endangered

Every Akwa Ibom child will be completely protected by this law we are signing today, and this is a commitment we would protect with all the might of the legal instruments at our disposal. We have come to make a law to protect everything we cherish and value….”

Those were the words from Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio shortly after signing the Child Rights Bill into Law on December 5, 2008.

The law became necessary after many parents and guardians in the state subjected their children/wards to inhuman treatments after branding them “witches” and “wizards”.

The events leading to the passage of the law are still fresh in the memories of many as the state was subjected to global odium by a report on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on alleged child-witches and inhuman treatments meted to them by their parents and communities.

A self-styled cleric, Bishop Sunday William, declared in the report that 2.3 million witches and wizards existed in the state – most of them, according to him, are children.

Williams also claimed that he helped parents kill about 110 “child-witches” for as much as N400,000 per ‘witch’.

The BBC documentary on the activities of his church went viral on the internet. It angered Akpabio that a ‘Bishop’ would declare that 2.3 million witches existed in a state of less than 4 million people; leaving just 1.7 million of the population witch-free.

The governor immediately ordered the Bishop’s arrest. The Bishop was later paraded at the State Police Headquarters, where he told reporters he did not kill the children as alleged, but merely destroyed spirits of witchcraft in them.

“I started destroying the spirits of witchcraft from people since 2007. I only destroyed the spirits out of the people up to 110 but not killing the main people.

“You can see behind me some of the children whom I have destroyed the spirit of witches out of them.”

Akpabio dismissed the 2.3 million witches claim. The governor, who spoke at a ceremony organised by Inoyo Toro Foundation in honour of Science, Mathematics and English language teachers in Uyo, said some of the children had confessed to being witches and wizards when they were tortured by their parents and church leaders.

Akpabio said: “If you put a nail on my head and ask me to agree that I am a wizard, I would do that to save myself from torture. That is how these children are tortured to accept that they are witches and their parents would gladly throw them out of the house.

“We will not only destroy such churches, but also get their pastors prosecuted and jailed to set example for others because some churches are deceiving people.”

While the number of such persons prosecuted since the enactment of the law remains unknown, cases of maltreatment and abuse continue to increase daily in the state.

Commissioner of Police Umar Gwadabe said the command was grappling with the rising tide of violence against persons accused of witchcraft.

His words: “On several occasions, our men were called upon to rescue vulnerable persons, such as women, children and the elderly who are falsely accused of being witches, and who are being subjected to untold acts of torture and brutality by some criminal elements.

“A case in point is the rescue of two male children aged nine (9) and six (6) years Mmenyene and Samuel who were branded as wizards in a village called Ikot Obio Asanga. They were rescued in a toilet having been locked up for 14 days without food and water.

“This followed a so-called prophesy that the children were wizards and responsible for the misfortune that had befallen the family. Those involved, the father and a prophetess had been picked up and charged to court.”

One of such unlucky victim was 12-year-old Mercy Frank, whose mother bathed her with acid because a prophet claimed she was possessed by witchcraft.

When our reporter met Mercy at the Children Ward of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), she was sitting alone and begging for food.

Mercy, before the acid bath, attended Atabong Primary School in Oron. The acid bath affected her breasts, mouth and other parts of her body.

Narrating her sad story, she said: “I am from Atabong village in Oron Local Government Area. I am the second child in the family of four children. My mother poured acid solution on my body that is why my mouth and my body are like these.

“One of our neighbours told my mother that I was a witch but I told her that I was not a witch. She took me to Apostolic Church in Atabong, Oron and the pastor told her that I was a witch. When the pastor asked me if I was a witch, I told him I was not a witch.

“The pastor prayed and told my mother that I was a witch then we went back home after the prayer. When we got home that night, my mother canned me seriously. Other neighbours begged her to let me be but she refused.

“Later at midnight, my mother took me to a deep forest and poured acid solution on me and dropped me by the roadside and left.”

She said security agents brought her to the hospital after seeing her in pains and crying by the roadside.

Mercy was lucky to survive the attack.

Effiong Lawson was not. He was recently beheaded, allegedly by his stepfather, Felix Lawson, 43, who accused him of being a wizard. Sources said Lawson accused the child of being responsible for the fate of his wretched and poverty-stricken family.

Eyewitness said the incident occurred while the suspect was enjoying his meal after returning from work on the fateful day.

His hungry step-son reportedly sneaked into the backyard and whispered to his younger sister to bring him leftover food to stop his hunger.

But the enraged stepfather, who heard and recognised his voice, went for his machete and attacked the child.

Two friends of the late Effiong’s who accompanied him to the house, sensing the danger from the stepfather, took to their heels but the late Effiong was not as lucky. He was overpowered and beheaded by the irate father.

Our investigations revealed that these and other incidents occurred despite the Child Rights Law.

Observers say the state government needs to exercise its judicial power and make the law function effectively by ensuring that perpetrators, like Effiong, are punished by the court to serve as deterrent to others.

  • Uniuyo to immortalise slain student

    Uniuyo to immortalise slain student

The University of Uyo said it would immortalise late Kingsley Udoette, a 200 level zoology student who died during June 12 students protest over intra- campus transport fare.

Prof. Kimse Okoko, Chairman, Uniuyo Governing Council, stated this when the council paid a condolence visit to the bereaved family in Uyo on Thursday.

Okoko said Udoette would not have died the way he did if the students had held dialogue with university’s management.

“But we are comforted that God will give you the strength and the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

“The university community and council will ensure that Udoette did not die in vain.

“We will immortalise him in the university in whatever way we can.

“It will be tragic for us to do anything that will belittle the sacrifice that Udoette has made. And as I have said, he will be remembered.”

He added that the university and the council would continue to monitor the progress of the family.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Comfort Ekpo, said Udoette’s death was a great shock to her and the university community.

Ekpo appealed to students to always use dialogue when they had disagreement with school management.

She said that dialogue remained the best option in any conflict situation.

The vice chancellor thanked the students who stood by the family during the loss.

Responding on behalf of the bereaved family, Mr Okposin Ekong, thanked the council chairman and university management for their visit.

Okposin said that Udoette was a beloved son of the mother, Maddy, who lost her husband years ago.

He appealed to the university authority and security agents to ensure that his killers were brought to book.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Udoette died of gunshot wound during the protest.

  • No plot to kill Udoedehe, says Akwa Ibom govt

The Akwa Ibom State Government yesterday denied an alleged plot to kill the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate in the 2011 governorship election, Senator James Udoedehe. It said it has nothing to do with it.

Special Assistant on Media to Governor Godswill Akpabio Jackson Udom quoted the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Aniekan Umanah, as saying that Udoedehe’s allegation was unfortunate.

Umanah said no one can bring down “the towering achievements of Governor Akpabio”.

“The people of the state and Nigerians know better and appreciate the work that the Akpabio administration has done,” Umanah said.

According to him, the governor is peace loving and will never contemplate evil against anyone.

The spokesman said Akpabio would rather explore legal means to settle any matter brought to his attention.

The commissioner described the allegation as one of ACN’s “antics”.

“The people voted Governor Akpabio to ensure the continuation of the uncommon transformation.

“It is on record that the governor has succeeded in turning the fortunes of Akwa Ibom around for the better.

“Through massive infrastructure such as the concentric flyovers, e-library, over 1600 km of roads, Ibom Entertainment Centre, the International Airport, among other notable projects of his administration, in addition to over 5,000 rural projects, it is wicked for anyone to claim that the governor has not achieved anything,” the statement added.

  • Akwa Ibom didn’t get N20b refund from govt, says official

The Akwa Ibom State Government has not been refunded N20billion for mending federal roads, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr Aniekan Umanah, has said.

In a statement, Umanah said contrary to reports credited to the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Works, Hon. Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi, the state was yet to be paid for the job done.

He quoted Ozomgbachi as saying during his visit to Governor Godswill Akpabio that “the sum of N20billion inserted in the 2013 budget was meant to be refunded to states of the federation on repairs of federal roads based on the approval of the President. He further said that the sum of N23billion will be earmarked in the 2014 appropriation for the same purpose.”

Umanah added: “The only time Akwa Ibom State received any refund from the Federal Government for the rehabilitation of federal roads was during the late Yar’Adua administration when it got N2billion despite spending over N120billion on the rehabilitation of federal roads.”

The state, he said, would be glad to receive refunds on all its expenses on the rehabilitation of federal roads, noting that the Akpabio administration has constructed and dualised over 200 kilometres of federal roads. The Uyo-Ikot Ekpene-Aba Federal Highway, he said, is being dualised as part of the over 320 new roads covering over 1,200 kilometres in the State.

The state, Umanah said, was happy with the relationship between the states and Federal Government on critical areas of development, promising to continue to work for the sustenance of the partnership.

  • Fire guts Champion Breweries in Akwa Ibom

The warehouse section of Champion Breweries Plc in Akwa Ibom State was yesterday razed down by fire.

The fire was said to have been triggered when particles of fire dropped on empty crates at the warehouse where a welder was working on some equipment.

A member of staff who spoke to The Nation on Sunday on condition of anonymity said the management is carrying out expansion at the warehouse to pave way for the movement of long trailer (haulage) into the store.

The fire that started around 11am was still active as at the time The Nation on Sunday visited the Nung Udoe Road where Champion Breweries Company is located.

Damage from the fire was limited, according to eye-witnesses, due to the quick response of the Akwa Ibom State Fire Service, Julius Berger Plc and some water private distribution company operating in the state.

As at the time of filing this report, Julius Berger had supplied four (4) tanks of trailer load of water while the private water company had supplied seven (7) in a bid to put out the fire.

Security operatives comprising officers from the Nigerian Army and Nigeria Police Force cordoned off the area, while workers of the company were seen outside the premises discussing the cause of the fire. According to witnesses, no life was lost and nobody sustained injury due to the quick response time of the Akwa Ibom Fire Service.

The management of the company declined to comment on the fire incident. The Uyo Divisional Commander, Akwa Ibom State Fire Service, Mrs. Nsikak Godwin however said: “The situation is under control. We drafted our men from various divisions like Abak, Ikot Ekpene, Etinan to back Uyo in putting out the fire.”

  • Akwa Ibom property owners appeal to govt

The Forum of Property Owners in Akwa Ibom State has appealed to the state government to re-route the high voltage electric bare conductors connected over their residential and business premises.

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company of Nigeria while executing the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) along Eket-Itu 132 (264) Transmission line, in Akwa Ibom State, had diverted the High Voltage electric bare conductors over some residential buildings in seven local governments in the state. The National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) along Eket-Itu 132 (264) Transmission line was executed by Houquado Nigeria Limited. The affected LGAs are Eket, Nsit Ubium, Nsit Ibom Itu, Etinan, Ibesikpo Asutan and Uyo.

Speaking during the presentation of letter of appeal to Governor Godswill Akpabio, President, Forum of Property Owners, Ime Ekanem, said the recent development in some communities in Akwa Iboms State where high tension wires fell off and electrocuted people to death is worthy of mention, so as to guide those responsible for utmost care and caution.

His words: “We are all aware of the potent danger of having one’s house under High Tension Wires, especially during rainfall which is usually accompanied by thunder and lightening. This should be a cause for concern because our life-span is being tacitly shortened as a result of the psychological trauma, persistent fear and radiation from the wires.

“Research has shown that the probability ratio of direct lightening strokes on transmission line (like 132kv transmission line Eket-Itu) would be hit by about 8 to 10 per cent of the lightening or thunder stroke. This is capable of causing surge voltages and current and also that Akwa Ibom with a high frequency rate of lightening and thunder stroke will release a high level of electrical charges which is dangerous to us (victims) living under the high tension wire.”

The Senior Special Assistant on Power to the governor, Dr. Victor Udo, received the letter on behalf of the state government. Udo commended the forum of property owners for allowing the project to be completed without any clash between the communities and the contractor.

He said: “I don’t want to make a promise but I am telling you that we are aware of this situation. I also want to minimise some of your fears that they didn’t increase the voltage on the line. They only increased the size of the wire so that it will be able to carry more power.”

  • Akwa Ibom to get N20b refunds for federal roads

The Federal Government will soon refund N20 billion captured in the 2013 budget to Akwa Ibom State Government as part of its expenses on the construction of federal roads in the state.

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Works, Hon. Ogbuefi Ozorogbachi, stated this at the weekend.

He spoke when he paid a courtesy visit on Governor Godswill Akpabio at Governor’s Office, Uyo.

Ozorogbachi stated that a balance of N23 billion refunds would be inserted in next year’s budget for the state government.

Ozorogbachi, accompanied by the Deputy Chairman of the committee, Hon. Mohammed Wudil and other committee members, commended Akwa Ibom State Government for the rehabilitation and construction of federal roads in the state.

He urged other governors to emulate the Akwa Iboms states example by obtaining Presidential approval on construction of the roads.

He explained that the committee members embarked on the nationwide tour as part of their oversight function to monitor and evaluate the quality of jobs by contractors to ensure conformity with the designs and specifications laid down in the contractual agreements.

Akpabio lauded the effort of the committee members.

He stated that Akwa Ibom State Government has so far spent more than N100 billion on the rehabilitation and construction of federal roads in the state, regretting delay in the refunds.

The governor informed that the state has obtained Presidential approval for the construction of Uyo-Oron Road for N10 billion and Uyo-Ikot Ekpene-Aba Road at N50 billion in addition to the earlier Presidential approval of N28 billion for the construction of the same roads.
