Akwa Ibom State occupies fourth position in Niger Delta and 10th in Nigeria in terms of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

Chairman of the state Internal Revenue Service (AKIRS), Okon Okon, made the claim during a news conference in Uyo yesterday.

He said: “Our state’s IGR rose from N34.75 billion in 2022 to N43.18 billion in 2023 under the administration of Governor Umo Eno, as shown in the figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and Joint Tax Board (JTB), the apex body for tax authorities and final authority for reporting tax revenues in Nigeria.

“It is on record that Akwa Ibom State ranked among top 10 in IGR performance in Nigeria in 2023, coming fourth among the nine states in Niger Delta in the recently released ranking published by NBS.

“Our IGR trend shows significant and steady growth, with about 170 per cent increase over the past six years, rising from N15.96 billion in 2017 to N43.18 billion in 2023.”

  • Akwa Ibom is Nigeria’s most credit-worthy state, says Budgit

Akwa Ibom is Nigeria’s most credit-worthy state, says Budgit

Akwa Ibom has been adjudged the most credit-worthy state in Nigeria for its fiscal bandwidth to borrow more than any other state due to its comparatively sustainable debt profile.

A Nigerian civic organisation that examines states’ and national budgets and applies technology for citizen engagement with a view at institutional improvement, Budgit, stated this in its State of the States Report 2024 Edition with the theme: Moving Healthcare Delivery From Suboptimal To Optimal.

Budgit said Akwa Ibom came tops in the States’ Performance on Index C, scoring 0.227. The report declared that states that scored high were determined “by their debt-to-revenue ratio, and personnel cost to revenue ratio”.

It added: “In contrast, states that rank lower on Index C need to check their appetite for the acquisition of more debt as they appear to be either above or very close to solvency for debt-to-revenue ratio, foreign debt to total debt, debt service-to-revenue ratio, and personnel cost to revenue ratio.

“The lower ranking states may need to rapidly adopt Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models in delivering public goods due to their relatively poorer credit worthiness.

“The state (Akwa Ibom), owing to its relatively low foreign debt to total debt ratio, ranked the most debt-sustainable state among the 36 states.”

For Governor Umo Eno, who has not borrowed any funds, either domestic or foreign, since assuming office, the report further validates his administration’s position on prudent management of resources for the greater good of the people.

In the same report, Budgit indicated that regarding health expenditure, Akwa Ibom State allocated funds for purchasing health and medical equipment, construction and provision of hospitals and health centres, purchasing drugs, renovating and building new primary healthcare centres and boosting health training.

Gov. Eno to inaugurate 72 projects in Nov.

Gov. Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom says he will inaugurate eight road projects, 62 compassionate homes and two water reticulation projects in November.

Eno revealed this in Ikot Ekpene on Friday during the inauguration of a 1.1km spring road and drainage project, which links Gorretti Girls Secondary School, the only female school in the area.

He said that the projects would include; two roads in each of the senatorial districts and two compassionate homes in each of the 31 local government areas of the state.

The governor commended the contractor, U&K, Contractors, Mr Ukeme Eyoh, for delivering on the job, in spite of the difficult terrain.

He reminded the people of his campaign promise that his government was ready to engage youths in the art of governance.

“This is what can truly be defined as raising boys to men. Not by throwing money on the streets for young people to fight and injure themselves.

“For performing so well on this difficult task, we are awarding you Phase 2 of this project and when you finish, we will give you another project,” Eno said.

The Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, said the road was one of the first set of roads the governor offered to construct on assumption of office.

He said the next rainy season, there would be no flood in the community and thanked the governor for approving the second phase of the project, which is the extension of the drainage facility.

In his remarks, Sen. Emmanuel Ibokessien, said the road has cemented Ikot Ekpene as a support base for the governor.

“Spring Road cost us many votes in the last General Elections, because the opposition came here and took photographs of school children falling inside the gully.

“We are sure that you will even do more for us and we will support you till 2031,” he said. (NAN)

Minimum wage: Akwa Ibom govt offers N80,000, Kebbi to pay N75,000

    • Niger governor raises panel, keeps workers in suspense over figure

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has announced the approval of N80,000 as the new minimum wage for the state government’s employees.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had announced a minimum wage of N70,000 for federal civil servants in his nationwide broadcast in April, but many states have surpassed the federal benchmark.

A statement yesterday in Uyo, the state capital, by Information Commissioner Ini Ememobong said the governor has set up an implementation committee, chaired by the Head of Civil Service (HoCS), Effiong Essien, on the new minimum wage.

The committee has been given one month to deliver its report on how the wage increase would be executed.

Other members of the committee are: the Chairman of the State Civil Service Commission; Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission; the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance; the leadership of labour unions, such as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria, among others.

Ememobong added that the announcement was “reflective of the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare of its workforce”.

Also, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has signed N75,000 minimum wage for the state’s workers into law.

The governor signed the new wage yesterday in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, in the presence of National Labour Congress (NLC) leaders, headed by National President Joe Ajaero.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor also directed implementation of the new wage within 72 hours.

Idris said: “We are making a very important history today as we have the presence of NLC leadership who, coincidentally, came for a meeting here in Kebbi.

“I want to remind us that the NLC leadership overwhelmingly supported me as they had come into the state during my electioneering campaign to support me – as one of their own.

“I assure you that I will not disappoint you, and I will not disappoint people of Kebbi and its workers at all levels.”

In Niger State, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has not announced how much his administration will pay as minimum wage to the workers.

But he has set up an implementation committee to examine the modalities for the new minimum wage.

Efforts by our correspondent to know the exact amount the government is proposing for the minimum wage met brick walls.

The Nation learnt that the governor’s silence was informed by the speculation that the state’s local governments have a bloated workforce of about 6,000 workers.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ibrahim Bologi, said the new minimum wage would be announced after the submission of the committee’s report.

Residents suffer losses as armed robbers attack estate in A’Ibom

Residents of Okung Estate in the Ifa Atai Etoi area of Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, are counting their losses after armed robbers made off with millions of naira in cash and other valuables.

The assailants reportedly invaded the estate around 2 a.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024, conducting house-to-house attacks that left many residents injured.

When our correspondent arrived at the scene around 7 a.m., bullet casings were scattered across the ground.

Among the injured were a married woman, Mrs. Bassey, and a night guard identified only as Victor, who suffered bullet wounds and machete cuts to the head, respectively. Other injured residents were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Dr. Nsima Andy, the Chairman of the Landlords Association, stated that the robbers struck at 2 a.m. and confirmed that the incident had been reported to the Shelter Afrique Police Station.

He added that the stolen items included laptops, undisclosed amounts of cash, mobile phones, and iPads.

He said: “From the available information I have, the robbers had been in the community since midnight. I was not aware until around 1:30 a.m. when a fellow landlord called me about it. I called other landlords to inform them about the incident. It was then we were aware they had entered seven houses.

“They carted away mobile phones, laptops, iPads and other valuables. They collected huge sums of money from the victims.

“We’ve reported the incident to Shelter Afrique Police Station and were given a police officer to inspect the damages they did to our people. We have been given numbers to dial in case we have a similar experience again.”

A victim, who did not want to be named, revealed that the armed robbers, numbering fifteen, were huge men without masks. He said they arrived at his house at 1:59 a.m. and operated for 45 minutes.

He said: “They had removed the window when my wife woke up. She told them not to disturb themselves, and that she would open the door for them. That was because they had destroyed the window beyond expected.

“They’d already entered through the window before we could open the door for them and we dropped all the money we had on the table before they were threatening to kill us. When they told me to bring more money or they will kill me, I said there was no more money.

“They shoot my wife in the leg. That was when I started begging for our lives but they pointed guns at me and attempted to kill me. Thank God, we were not killed. I’ve taken my wife to the hospital, and she’s responding to treatment.”

Meanwhile, some residents of the Ifa Atai area have cried out over the increasing insecurity of lives and property and urged the Akwa Ibom State Government to come to their aid.

A cross-section of residents told newsmen on Monday that hoodlums were having a field day in the area and the police had been unable to curb their activities.

Mr. Desmond Ukpong, a businessman who resides at Ifa Ikot Idang and operates a business centre at Ifa Atai Big Junction, said he was a victim of armed robbers on August 13.

“I was fast asleep when I suddenly heard a hard kick on my door and some strange voices asking me to open the door,” he said.

Ukpong said that the well-armed robbers asked him and his family members to lie down on the ground as they carted away their valuables.

“We were also beaten mercilessly after which they proceeded to rob other tenants in the building,” he said.

Ukpong said that calls to the police after the incident yielded no response.

Mrs. Abigail Ekong, a landlady whose property is also on Mbak Road, said that the insecurity had prevailed for a long time and many lived in fear.

Ekong told newsmen that it was not unusual to hear gunshots almost every day in the area, a situation, she said, was beginning to affect not only the residents but also businesses in the locality.

She said some night petrol guards and business owners had fallen victim to armed robbers sometimes.

The landlady urged the government to provide sophisticated weapons for the police and boost their welfare, explaining that such an action would encourage them to be more effective.

She said better security by the police was more imperative now in the ‘Ember’ months with its attendant rise in crime.

Mr. Daniel Okoro, a provision dealer who also resides in Ifa Ikot Obong, told newsmen that he was at one of the petrol stations around Ifa Atai junction sometime in March when robbers struck, causing many to flee.

He said the robbers shot into the air to scare people off and went away with some money.

Okoro called on the police to intensify security patrols as the year was running out.

Mr. Okon Etim, an automobile engineer who has a workshop on Airport Road, said he had been closing early due to insecurity and appealed to the police to curb the menace of the robbers.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John denied that the police did not respond to distress calls.

She said the police had increased patrols of the area by posting more men to some ‘black spots’, adding that the command was doing everything possible to ensure safety for all.

John called on the public to cooperate by reporting suspicious movements and gatherings in the area.

JUST IN: PDP wins 30 LGAs in Akwa Ibom council poll

…as APC wins in Akpabio’s LG, rejects result

The Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) has released the results of the local government election held on Saturday, October 5.

Aniedi Ikoiwak, the Chairman of AKISIEC, announced the results at the commission’s office on Udo Udoma Avenue.

According to the announcement, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged victorious in 30 out of the 31 local government areas in the state.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won in Essien Udim, the local government area of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, in line with the predictions of political analysts.

Additionally, the PDP secured the majority of the councillorship seats across the state, solidifying its position as the ruling party.

However, the APC has contested the election results, claiming that the process was marred by widespread rigging, violence, and theft of materials by the PDP.

In a press release signed by the state publicity secretary of APC, OtoAbasi Udo, the party said that AKISIEC compromised the integrity and credibility of the election in favour of the PDP.

The press release reads in parts: “Yesterday, 5 October 2024, Local Government Elections to usher in new elected executive chairmen and councilors were conducted by AKISIEC (Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission), the tenure of the exiting chairmen and councillors having since come to an end by effluxion of time.

“AKISIEC just like any other SIEC in Nigeria is controlled and managed by the State Government. To that extent, there is a perceived and real influence of the electoral umpire by the State Government.

“And to that extent, the obvious result would be tilted in favour of the ruling party in the State. Therefore, what we saw and experienced yesterday was a manifestation of such influence beginning with acute shortages of election materials which disenfranchised quite a number of accredited voters, and actions of financial inducements on voters by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the State.

“In spite of the above and more, the teeming supporters of our great Party, the All Progressives Congress, and APC in the State, all came out to support our candidates on the ballot.

“The Party, ably led by Obong Stephen Leo Ntukekpo, uses this opportunity to express her sincere thanks and appreciation to you all for your tireless, steadfast,  unalloyed support and commitment to the Party and assure you that with the Supreme Court judgment that returned full autonomy to the third tier of government, the local government, enshrined in our constitution and the steps taken by the National Assembly to give full effect to the judgment, from the next local government election, all SIECs in charge of local government elections now, would have been dismantled, incapacitated and laid to rest and a bright prospect for future local government elections firmly put in place.”

Gang beheads three hunters in Akwa Ibom

Three hunters have been beheaded by a gang member  at Unyenghe, Mbo Local Government Area of  Akwa Ibom State.

But the Police Commissioner, Joseph Eribo, said the suspect had been nabbed.

The CP, who paraded the suspect yesterday alongside other suspects, said the arrest was a major breakthrough for them.

Eribo said: “We recovered two of the bodies without their heads and the other we haven’t seen till today. They told us they threw the body into the high sea. We got the No 3 man of that deadly gang. And he is confessing what they did.’’

He also said the police have killed three members of an armed gang during a return attack to kidnap a Catholic priest they once kidnapped and released after an undisclosed ransom was paid

On some of the recent breakthroughs, the CP said: “We have neutralised three daredevil criminals notorious for kidnapping and other criminal acts. We have it on record that they once kidnapped a prominent Reverend Father, took him somewhere in this state and ransom was collected.

“This time they were coming for a second mission to pick the Father again, because one informant told them that the target had a lot of money to give out. We acted on a very credible intelligence and we were able to nuetralise three of them.

“Another case involved a very brutal, deadly cult operating in the riverine area. This was the group that recently cut down three hunters (vigilantes) in one of the villages (Unyenghe, Mbo Local Government Area) in the state. They beheaded them.

“We recovered two of the bodies without their heads and the other we haven’t seen till today. They told us they threw the body into the high sea. We got the No 3 man of that deadly gang. And he is confessing what they did. A terrible gang.

“There are other breakthroughs recorded, including two cases of unlawful possession of firearms with the arms recovered. There is also a case of child stealing where children are taken from this state and sold outside for various amounts, including a child sold for N400,000 and another for N600,000. We have two women and other suspects with us.”

The CP also mentioned a case of fake kidnap “where children wanting to extort their parents arranged their own kidnap. The lid was blown off and we were able to apprehend them”,  just as a dismissed Police Corporal was paraded for impersonating on uniform as a serving officer to extort people was also paraded.

“Only God knows how many people have fallen victim to his impersonation. A good Samaritan gave us the information on him doing those things a genuine policeman wouldn’t do in uniform. ‘‘
