    ‘We didn’t click against Rangers’

Akwa United spokesperson, Uwem Ekoh has said his team didn’t do well in the 3-1 defeat to Rangers International of Enugu on match day 32 og the Globacom Premier League.

Ekoh said: “It was not bad a game, we had a good game plan for Rangers but our boys didn’t just play well as they missed good goal scoring chances.

“If the half chances were converted, I’m sure we could have left Enugu with at least a point but, at the end, we take solace from our errors in front of the Flying Antelopes goal.

“I must also commend the match officials as officiating was 50/50, and Enugu fans did spice up the game as they were very friendly.

“We must now go and prepare for Sunday’s match day 33 game against Nasarawa United in Uyo as we intend to return to winning ways after the unfortunate barren draw against Heartland on match day 31.”

Ugonna Uzochukwu’s brace in the first half ensured that the coach Okey Emordi side were home and dry.

With less than 10minutes to the restart of the second half, the Flying Antelopes put the game beyond the reach of the Uyo team as Mfon Udoh scored consolatory goal in the 65th.

  • Akwa’s Tenger a happy man

    Akwa’s Tenger a happy man

Akwa United coach, Justin Tenger is a satisfied man after his side edged 3SC 1-0 in the Glo Premier League Matchday 27 encounter on Sunday at the Uyo Township Stadium.

Davies Ukeme scored the match winner in the 57th minute to hand his side the much desired three maximum points. The victory has increased the Uyo-based side’s total earning to 37 points from possible 81 though with a game at hand against leaders, Kano Pillars.

Tenger, who dedicated the side’s hard-earned victory to God, said it would have been disastrous to the side’s survival instinct to drop another point in two successive matches.

“I feel great with this hard-earned win, that’s why I’m dedicating the victory to God as 3SC came all out to spoil the fun for us.

“It would’ve been disastrous for us to have drawn another game at home after last week’s 1-1 home draw against El-Kanemi Warriors. A draw in this encounter wouldn’t have augured well with our position.

“Right now we’ve achieved an improvement and we’ll keep the fight from here in our subsequent matches,” said the former Niger Tornadoes coach to supersport.com.

Tenger said there was no regret over his side’s failure to avenge the 1-4 defeat his wards suffered in the hands of 3SC in the first fixture in Ibadan.

“Teams have done a lot of adjustments since the start of the second stanza that it has become almost impossible to witness the wide goal margin as experienced in the first stanza.

“We desperately needed three points to shore up our standing on the log and the lone goal just did the magic. The most important thing is the three points at this stage of the league.

“We can only get better in subsequent matches, the struggle continues and as I’ve been commonly quoted the league race is still wide open.

“The league is a marathon, nobody can lay claim to the title the same as nobody will be tagged the bottom side,” said the former Gombe United coach.

Akwa United will be the guests of the embattled ABS in the mid-week Glo Premier League Matchday 28 encounter at the Kwara State Stadium, llorin.

  • Akwa United beg Eagles to shun victory party

AGGRIEVED Akwa United players have called on the Super Eagles not to honour an invitation from the Akwa Ibom State government to host them for winning the 2013 AFCON, reports MTNFootball.com

One of the players said they don’t know why the government would choose to reward the Eagles who worked for the nation and have been rewarded by Federal Government at their detriment.

“I am begging the Super Eagles on behalf of my fellow players at Akwa United not to come for the reception the Akwa Ibom State government is planning for them. This is because we have not been paid our sign-on fees for the past two seasons on the account that there is no money. Now they have money to shower on the Eagles who are rich already,” the player told MTNFootball.com

“The Eagles should help us send a message to the governor to use the money he wants to spend on them to pay us because we are dying here. “We are being owed 20% from 2010/2011 and 80% sign on fees for last season. We don’t know our fate this season. We need their help because they are big boys.”

The player further said: “We tried to see the commissioner and the governor on our case to know what the problem is, but our chairman, Isang Isong, has always made it impossible for us to see any of them, may be he doesn’t want us to expose him.

“This is an opportunity for us to let the governor hear our voice that we are suffering,”he stated.
