Tinubu’s reforms will reset Nigeria’s economy – Gov Sani, Alake

Kaduna state governor, Uba Sani, and the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, have reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision, expertise, and bold approach to resetting Nigeria’s economy through various reforms and policies aimed at improving the lives of citizens.

The duo made these remarks on Tuesday at a one-day lecture organized by the Arewa Think Tank (ATT) in Kaduna, themed “Agricultural Perspective of Nigeria in the Last 64 Years of Independence.”

Speaking at the event, Minister Alake highlighted Tinubu’s track record of implementing transformative policies, recalling his tenure as Lagos State Governor in 1999.

“When Bola Tinubu became governor, he introduced a biometric register for civil servants, which faced significant opposition because it blocked loopholes that some individuals were exploiting.

“Today, he is applying the same strategy at the national level—blocking financial leakages and plugging loopholes. Naturally, those who have benefited from these loopholes will resist,” Alake stated.

Governor Sani and the minister expressed confidence that Tinubu’s ongoing reforms would bring long-term economic stability and prosperity to Nigeria despite current challenges and resistance from vested interests.

“We are witnessing the resistance all over the country. But you need a man of courage to stay firm for justice. Because of Tinubu’s steadfastness, consistency and resilience he waded through all those obstacles and resistance and turned around the economy of Lagos.

“Today Lagos has the 6th largest economy in the whole of Africa. It is not by accident. It is by calculated and meticulous execution of those policies. Today Lagos economy is one of the largest economy among 20 African countries.

“This is where President Bola Tinubu is taking Nigeria. We need to support Tinubu whom God has given the vision, knowledge and courage to take the country out of the quagmire we found ourselves in the last several decades.

“Future generations will not forgive us if we shy away from temporary pain which was the pain of previous governments which lacked knowledge to better the society and because of lack of knowledge they recoiled into their shells because they didn’t want to lose the next election. They didn’t want to lose in this area, they didn’t want to lose that area.

“It takes a man of courage not to give a damn about the next election but to give more damn about the prosperity and standardisation of the society. That is what Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing for Nigeria. He is a man vision, knowledge and courage.

“He envisions what is good for the country, he the knowledge of what is good for the country and he has the courage to bring them to reality. Not all leaders have these qualities. Some have one of the qualities, others have two of the qualities. It is only Tinubu that has the three qualities. We are going to revive Nigeria in all its ramifications. President Tinubu’s 7-point agenda will take Nigeria to greater heights”.

Governor Uba Sani acknowledged that the implementation of the president’s  bold policies have not been without challenges and pains for Nigerians but clarified that the pains are  temporary.

He said with  just a little more patience and perseverance ‘’we shall start reaping the fruits of the reforms.

“In fact, we are already turning the corner. The economy is fast improving. Very soon the positive impact of the reforms would be felt by Nigerians. What the President needs at this critical time is the support of our people,’’ he added.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visionary and transformative policy thrust, aimed at repositioning Nigeria as a global investment hub.

“The Agenda which is anchored on the core pillars of democracy, development and diaspora engagement, is being vigorously pursued with courage and patriotic zeal,’’ he further said.

“According to the Governor,  the transformation of Nigeria and giving Nigerians a new lease of life  must give priority attention to Agriculture.

“Governor Uba Sani recalled  that ‘’at independence, Agriculture was the mainstay of the Nigerian economy. The three regions effectively utilized resources from Agriculture to build critical infrastructure and develop human capital.

He lamented that ‘’due to the discovery of oil, we abandoned Agriculture. We are the poorer for it. We must return to Agriculture and invest heavily in it. It holds the key to addressing the challenges of poverty, unemployment and insecurity.”

The governor, however, maintained that ‘’President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is already showing us the way. His administration has prioritized Agriculture and is investing heavily in mechanization and empowerment of smallholder farmers.’’

According to Governor Uba Sani, Tinubu’s  investment in Agriculture is unequalled in the history of administrations in Nigeria.

“Mr. President has equally been giving sustained assistance to subnationals in respect of funds and agricultural inputs. Mr. President recently made history by creating the Ministry of Livestock Development which holds the potential of making Nigeria the leading producer of livestock in Africa,’’ he added.

The Governor said that  the main policy thrust of his  administration is Rural Transformation of Kaduna State, adding that ‘’we are committed to promoting  accelerated rural development by extending infrastructure to all local government areas with the goal of supporting our rural communities to achieve rapid economic growth.’’

Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, chairman of the occasion and former Chief of Defence Staff, retired General Martin Luther Agwai, the Minister and Governor Uba Sani were all given awards by the Arewa Think Tank.

  • Ban on mining in Zamafara State lifted, says Alake

Ban on mining in Zamafara State lifted, says Alake

Five years after it suspended mineral exploration in Zamfara State, the Federal Government yesterday announced the lifting of the ban on mining activities in the Northwest state.

Solid Minerals Development Minister Dele Alake, who  dropped the hint in Abuja yesterday, said the move was made following significant improvement on the security situation in the state.

The Federal Government banned all forms of mining activities in Zamfara in 2019, following alarming reports of banditry and its link to illegal mining.

According to Alake, insecurity in the state had been reduced to a manageable level to facilitate the operation of legitimate mining activities.

He said that reversing the ban would support efforts to boost the country’s economic profile, particularly as the state possessed critical minerals in commercial quantities needed for energy transition.

The minister said: “The nation has a lot to gain from reawakened economic activities in a highly mineralised state like Zamfara that is imbued with vast Gold, Lithium, and Copper belts.”

The minister explained that the ban had created a vacuum, which was exploited by illegal miners to rob the nation of its resources.

He said: “The concomitant result was the colossal loss of revenue to the affected communities, local government, the state and the Federal Government as legitimate owners were forced to shut down operations.”

According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is determined to address insecurity in the country by deploying intelligence-gathering and other security operations to neutralise merchants of insecurity

He stated that Tinubu’s strategy had led to the neutralisation of key bandit commanders, thereby significantly reducing incidents of insecurity across the nation.

“A recent success was the capture of one of the most wanted bandit commanders, Halilu Sububu, in a covert operation in Zamfara,” he said.

The government, Alake said, is responsible for protecting lives and property, and contingency plans have already been made to protect mining operators in Zamfara and other states.

He further explained that the strategies adopted to achieve the feat were increased intelligence gathering by relevant security agencies, who would work alongside the mining operators.

The minister stated that lifting of the ban would also facilitate better regulation of mining activities in the state.

He added that the host communities would also benefit from the ban lift through the implementation of corporate social responsibility projects by the mining companies.

According to him, the move will ensure the country benefits from the state’s rich mineral resources, and the significant contributions of the sector to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The minister also explained the provisions of its Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with France, on boosting mining in the country.

He reassured that the agreement does not imply Nigeria was relinquishing control over its mineral resources or entering into any military pact with France.

On December 1, the minister announced an agreement   with France to develop joint projects to promote and diversify the value chain of the critical minerals in the solid minerals sector of both countries.

The partnership is also to open opportunity for the remediation of more than 2,000 abandoned pits in the country through environmental rehabilitation and post-mining projects intervention plans.

Alake said: “The high point of the MoU is on training and capacity building for our mining professionals. We need all the assistance we can get in terms of capacity, technical, and financial support from abroad, and that wasn’t even the first we are signing.”

Over 2,000 abandoned mining pits in the country are to be revived under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Nigerian and French governments.

Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, following the signing of the MOU by the two countries during last week visit by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to France.

The statement signed by Alake’s senior special assistant on media, Segun Tomori, said the MOU is expected to open new opportunities for the remediation of over 2,000 abandoned pits in the country through its plan to intervene in environmental rehabilitation and post-mining projects.

Alake further said that the MOU has boosted President Tinubu’s efforts at repositioning the country’s solid minerals sector for international competitiveness.

He stated that both countries agreed to develop joint projects to promote and diversify the critical minerals value chain in the solid minerals sector of both countries.

According to the statement, the two countries identified critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt as rare earth elements that are essential to clean energy technologies.

The key component of the MOU according to the statement is the promotion of sustainable mining activities by executing projects and programmes that reduce the environmental impact of mining on carbon emissions, water consumption, and climate change.

It also includes the establishment of joint excrative and processing projects through co-financing by public and private entities to diversify and secure the supply of critical minerals and decarbonise energy projects critical to the value chain.

Under the MOU both countries agreed to collaborate on research, training and Franco-Nigerian students exchanges for knowledge and skills transfer.

Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Alake signed for the country while the Inter-Ministerial delegate for Critical Ores and Metals of the Republic of France, Mr Benjamin Gallezot, signed on behalf of France.

Both nations agreed to adopt international best practices in the execution of projects conceptualised to improve the conditions of the local populace affected by mining whilst placing premium on transparency.

Through regular bilateral and multilateral training, seminars, and events, administrators of institutions in the critical metals sector are expected to improve their capacity to manage the sector’s value chain.

Describing the deal as a boost to the efforts of the Tinubu administration to reposition Nigeria’s solid minerals sector for international competitiveness, Alake stressed that the ministry would leverage the partnership to open up the mining sector to French investors.

States can’t interfere in mining operations, says Alake

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dr. Dele Alake has cautioned against arbitrary closure of mining operations by State Governments, warning that such act could abort efforts by Federal Government to attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) and provoke divestment.

He handed down the warning while announcing a fact-finding  committee to look into the face-off between Osun State government and Thor Explorations Limited, owners of the Segilola Resources Operating Limited over taxation and operational matters.

The caution note was contained in a statement by the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister, Segun Tomori in Abuja on Saturday.

He warned that mining operations and regulations are the exclusive rights of the federal government and not the sub-nationals.

The Minister directed the committee headed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Mary Ogbe to probe the claims and counter claims by the Osun State government and the private firm by engaging both parties towards resolving the dispute and restoring industrial harmony.

He observed that the Federal Government has been marketing opportunities for investments in the solid minerals sector across the world and cautioned that closure of mining operations by sub-nationals could abort efforts to attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) and provoke divestment.

“Indiscriminate closures of mining operations by sub-nationals raises the risk of discouraging foreign direct investments and even worse, possible divestment by existing companies.  Mining is on the exclusive legislative list. The Ministry of Solid Minerals should be consulted before such disruptive actions are taken,”  Alake asserted.

The Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s interest in raising the tempo of productive activities nationwide to boost economic growth, increase employment and community development.

Alake stressed that any cessation of industrial production will undermine the goals of economic prosperity, deny workers the opportunity to earn income, and further contribute to adversity.

The Minister then called on both parties to co-operate with the fact-finding team and allow production to continue while the issues are resolved.

“I hereby call on His Excellency, the Governor of Osun State, Sen. Ademola Adeleke and the management of Thor Exploration Limited to sue for peace and industrial harmony in the interest of the workers and their dependents who may be adversely affected by closure of operations at the factory.” he added.

Members of the fact-finding committee include representatives of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Ministry of Labour and Employment and the National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA).

We are committed to making mining a viable revenue base – Alake

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dale Alake has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the growth and sustainability of the mining sector as a viable alternative revenue base in the nation’s bid to move into a non-oil-dependent economy.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Mary Ogbe, the minister gave this commitment on Wednesday, September 18, in Abuja at a press conference to herald the 9th Nigeria Mining Week (NMW), scheduled for 18th -20th November 2024 in Abuja.

To actualise this, the minister said the ministry will continue to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that Nigeria’s mineral wealth is harnessed in a manner that benefits not only the present generation but also secures a prosperous future for generations to come.

Alake noted that the NMW in the past years has grown to become the platform for stakeholders in the mining industry, both from within Nigeria and across the globe, to gather and engage in meaningful dialogue about the limitless opportunities that Nigeria’s mining sector presents.

He said: “This annual gathering has consistently served as a catalyst for advancing the discourse on the critical role our mineral resources play in driving national economic growth, and this year’s edition is poised to continue this tradition at an even higher level.”

He pointed out that the country is home to some of the most valuable untapped mineral resources in the world, hence the move by the ministry to continue to reform and restructure the regulatory frameworks.

The theme for this year’s week, which the minister said will reveal in the coming weeks, “is centred on our shared commitment to utilizing our vast mineral wealth to propel Nigeria’s economic transformation.

“This vision is in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes value addition, job creation, and positioning Nigeria as a strategic player in the global commodities market.”

The national president of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Dele Ayanleke, commended the Nigeria Mining Week’s role in shaping the country’s mining sector since its inception in 2016.

Represented by Alhaji Ibrahim Yerima, the chairman of the association’s Board of Trustees, Ayanleke noted that the event has been instrumental in introducing participants to cutting-edge technologies and methodologies that improve returns on investments.

He, however, admitted that the event is yet to reach the full scale envisioned by its founders, but noted that it has shifted the narrative about Nigeria’s mineral potential, capturing global attention and fostering partnerships between indigenous players and international counterparts.
