A senior reporter with The Nation Newspaper, Alao Abiodun has been shortlisted for this year’s edition of global journalism prize, 2026 True Story Award.

Alao’s story, titled: “How mothers induce obesity in their babies with ‘organic weight gain foods — https://thenationonlineng.net/how-mothers-induce-obesity-in-their-babies-with-organic-weight-gain-foods/‘” was shortlisted in the World 1 category of the award.

His report exposes a stark practice by mothers exposing their babies, infants to excessive fat accumulation at their growing stage, thereby raising the risk of obesity.

While examining the dietary habit and the danger it poses for infants, Alao’s report revealed that some mothers’ obsession for rolls of fat on the legs, arms and chins of babies is fueling a fast-growing organic weight gain industry with medical practitioners warning that this could lead to a surge in cases of obesity in no distant future.

  • Facts about Imam who saved 262 Christians during attack

Facts about Imam who saved 262 Christians during attack

On 17 July, 2019, the U.S. Department of State presented an annual award for courageous acts in upholding religious freedom anywhere in the world.

Notably, one of the five people honored with the International Religious Freedom Award is Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, the Muslim religious leader who selflessly risked his own life to save Christians who would have likely been killed without his intervention.

Four religious leaders from Sudan, Iraq, Brazil, and Cyprus along with Abdullahi were also awarded the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award. The award, as the name suggests, is given to advocates of religious freedom.

Also, Abdullahi will receive a National Honour this week. President Muhammadu Buhari will present the award to him on October 11, 2022 at the State House in Abuja.

Here are few facts about the heroic Imam Abubakar Abdullahi:

    • Imam Abdullahi was born in Bauchi State around 1936 and has lived in Nghar for 60 years.
    • After living in Nghar for 60 years, He’s leader of the Muslim community in a mosque that was built on land provided by the Christian community.
    • He was announced as one of the recipients of the 2019 US International Religious Freedom Award.
    • Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, who is Hausa and the Chief Imam of a mosque in Yelwan Gindi Akwati village, in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, alongside his assistant Umar Abdullahi, who is Fulani, saved the lives of over 200 persons when suspected bandits attacked communities in the LGA.

    • The reported attack took place on June 23, 2018, on Yelwan Gindi Akwati, Swei and Nghar villages in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, where scores of persons were killed by suspected bandits.
    • On the day of this incident, Imam Abdullahi was said to have just finished midday prayers, he and his congregation heard gunshots and went outside to see members of the town’s Christian community fleeing. Instinctively, the Imam ushered 262 of them into the mosque and into his personal home next door.
    • Abubakar Abdullahi hid 262 Berom Christians in his mosque and in his house in June 2018, when herdsmen launched a bloody attack on 10 villages in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State.
    • According to news reports, the mosque is now the home and refuge of those hidden by the Imam.
    • Many of those the Muslim Cleric provided shelter for were from the Berom ethnic group which are predominantly Christians

Many people have commended Abdullahi’s courage in the face of imminent danger and his history of outreach across religious divides as this shows his lifelong commitment to promoting interfaith understanding and peace.

However, reports gathered in 2016, suggested that Nigeria’s pastoral conflict was the cause of more deaths that year than Boko Haram. Violence between the nomadic herdsmen and farmers in Nigeria’s middle belt dates back to 2013. Hundreds of people have been killed in 2018, and the tit-for-tat violence has been ongoing for several years.

Had the imam not intervened, the death toll may have been much higher, as the armed men stormed into the mainly Muslim village in pursuit of those who had fled the mainly Christian village nearby.

  • UPDATED: Diane evicted from #BBNaija

Housemate, Diane has been evicted from the Big Bother Naija reality show, leaving Mercy as the last woman standing in the race to win the N60 million cash prize.

With her eviction, the five remaining housemates, Frodd, Mercy, Mike, Omashola and Seyi made it to the final, with one of them expected to win the coveted prize.

Tonight’s Pepper Dem twist saw Diane leaving the House after being randomly picked out from an unlucky draw.

The Task of picking Diane to leave was performed by Frodd as the second and final part of the privilege of his Ultimate Veto Power.

The choice wasn’t entirely in his hands as he had to randomly pick from a magic hat.

To get the ball rolling, the Housemates were asked to fetch all their remaining Bet9ja Coins, including the big gold Bet9ja Coin they were each given four weeks ago.

The Housemates were asked to drop all their Bet9ja Coins in the magic hat except the big gold ones.

Their ordinary Bet9ja coins had become redundant at this point. It was a good thing some of them spent theirs when they did.

After yesterday’s eviction that saw Ike and Elozonam leaving, the Pepper Dem Gang were left with six Housemates and the finale only had slots for five so someone had to leave.

But before the process started, a few of the Pepper Dem Gang were assured of their presence in the Finale.

Seyi, by virtue of winning the Head of House the previous week, secured a spot for himself in the Finale.

The immunity Mercy bought got her sitting pretty in the finale.

Mike’s public save during the Live Eviction Show guaranteed him a spot in the Finale.

Diane and Omashola were the only two left without a guarantee so the decision had to be made between the two of them on who will bid the House goodbye.

Diane and Omashola wrote their names on their gold Bet9ja coins and dropped it in a magic hat with the rest of the coins leaving Frodd with the final Ultimate Veto job of picking which Housemate to go home through an unlucky draw.

It was a tense moment in the House as Frodd reached into the sac picking again and again till he eventually picked Diane.

This makes Diane the 21st Housemate to leave the Pepper Dem House leaving the lucky five certain for the finale.

  • Six disasters to watch out for in the ‘ember months’

Many Nigerians perceive the ember months — September, October, November and December- to be synonymous with mysterious happenings.

Within these four months, a fever, perhaps sort of anxiety, grips most Nigerians.

Without doubt, the ‘ember’ months are always the busiest on roads for many reasons and the air of festivity within these periods makes everyone ecstatic.

From the religious perspective, many people believe these tragic occurrences are caused by evil spirits associated with these months.

They argue it is a season when prayers should be intensified to curtail the incidence of evil.

While this fear for the ‘Ember months’ seems to be a natural phenomenon, it is important that we also pay attention to the dangers that have now been associated to what is now termed “the ember months”.

Fire Outbreak – Fire is one of the major causes of accident during Ember months because the air becomes dryer, thus encouraging chain reaction of fire.

Ember months usually come with gradual subsiding of the rains and encroachment of the Harmattan haze.

These Harmattan hazes fuel fire outbreak in marketplaces, offices, worship centers, farms, bushes

Accidents – In Nigeria, the ember months are known as a period of hectic activity on roads.

People use this end of year period to engage in business and travel to visit loved ones living far away.

According to the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), a total of 5,181 Nigerians lost their lives in road traffic crashes (RTC) in 2018.

Further analysis revealed that the top five causes of road accidents are:

    • Speed violation
    • Wrongful overtaking
    • Dangerous driving
    • Tyre burst
    • Brake failure.

Other factors that also cause road accidents during this period are: excessive speeding, overloading and impatient passengers making passive comments to the driver while driving.

Many drivers place their safety at risk by overloading their vehicles.

Kidnapping Though insecurity and kidnapping are not new in Nigeria, there are always on the increase in during the ember months.

Kidnapping has evolved into a lingering, pervasive security threat and fast-paced and multifaceted criminal enterprise.

It is now perpetrated by diverse armed groups and criminal gangs operating across the country

Young and old have been victims; others have had the gruesome experience of loosing loved ones to these kidnappers.

Robbery and other criminal activities – Some of the most common types of robberies experienced in Nigeria are home robberies, car robberies and bank robberies.

Today, armed robbery is not only one of the biggest threat in Nigeria, but also a social scourge

Robberies can occur almost anywhere at any time, but tend to occur more often in anticipated settings and at expected times.

All that is necessary is a motivated robber and an unwilling victim at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Excessive alcohol intake and smoking – Alcohol is a major factor in many speed-related crashes. Sadly, manufacturers of alcoholic beverages have not been very supportive of anti-drink drive campaigns.

Small-sized bottles of alcoholic drinks are being consumed by drivers without a thought for safety on the road.

In some advanced nations such as the United Kingdom, members of the public have adequate information about the legal alcohol limits.

Reckless driving of commercial vehicles – Some drivers are very reckless. They see themselves as the kings of the road. So, they park, stop and swerve the car indiscriminately. Funny enough, they involve themselves in a car race to know who is a faster driver.

While doing this, they mistakenly hit pedestrians crossing, traders or even bystanders. This can result in grave injuries or even deaths.

All these acts are very dangerous to road users and needs to be looked into if we want people to be safe.

As it has done over the past several years, it is expected that the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) will once again embark upon its annual road safety campaign.

In all that you do during this Ember months, remember to stay safe, be watchful and careful

  • How Toyin Abraham, Lizzy Anjorin fell apart

The feud between Nollywood actresses, Toyin Abraham and Lizzy Anjorin, appears not to be ending soon.

The hot exchange in the last couple of days came to a full glare with the actresses going back and forth with allegation(s) and counter-response(s).

Controversially, this appears to be a tough time for their fans and perhaps sort of entertainment to neutral observers and bloggers.

Anjorin, who has made more ‘unsavoury claims’ about Toyin with unpleasant jabs seem not to be ready to let the dust settle.

In this piece by The Nation, Alao Abiodun x-rays the most burning drama of the moment in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

    The Genesis

Lizzy Anjorin allegedly accused Toyin Abraham of running the blog “Gistlover.com” alongside multiple Instagram accounts to troll her and other colleagues in the movie industry.

Lizzy claimed that Toyin leaked damaging reports about her to blogs.

The fight however came to a full glare with a post by a popular actress alleging that when Toyin Abraham put to bed, she didn’t send her a congratulatory message.

This sparked a debate on her page. While her fans hurled insults on Anjorin, others said Toyin kept mute as this was going on.

However, the issue was later watered down when Toyin went on to apologise that she saw her message.

After this scenario, Nigerians woke up to see that the social media has been frenzied since Anjorin claimed the actress was living a fake life and didn’t even have a car or a house of her own.

She also alleged that contrary to the rumour that she gave birth to her child abroad, she actually was delivered of the baby at a local “agbo” seller’s house.

She also alleged Toyin had to borrow costumes for her photo shoots.

Interestingly, the nursing mother with the help of her publicist, Big Sam of Broadway TV, released a video showing her after she welcomed her son in a hospital in Lekki, Lagos.

On why she had her baby in Nigeria at the Vedic lifecare hospital in Lekki, Toyin Abraham said: “I got to know this place when I came to visit Princess Shyngle, that actress when I came to visit her when she had issues and I loved how nice everyone, the doctors and nurses were.

“Since I had just moved into Lekki with my husband then, I decided to make this my family hospital.

“It has been a great experience, trust me. I am so happy and that is why I decided to have my baby in Nigeria because I trust the people here. I actually traveled out but I came back to Nigeria because I wanted him here at Vedic hospital with trusted hands.”

Now that things seems to have fallen apart between the duo. let’s watch as more drama unfolds.

    Taking the legal route

    Toyin Abraham’s letter

Toyin Abraham has sent a legal warning of ‘cease and desist’ notice letter to the Lizzy Anjorin through her lawyers requesting her to forward a letter of apology via their office, and on her Instagram page.

Her lawyer said she issued the last warning to Liz Anjorin and if she failed to reply within 24 hours, they would be forced to file a N500m damages legal action against her.

However, in her usual controversial style, Toyin Abraham further called Liz Anjorin a ‘pig’ in the caption of the post.

“Silence is not golden. Rather than wrestle with a pig, it might be ideal to let the pig know that it belongs in the pen. I’m no longer speaking on this, my management team and attorneys are taking this up. Cc @bbbmedia @officialsamolatunj1,” she posted.

    Lizzy Anjorin’s letter

Anjorin replied that she has written a petition to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) to investigate them as she has been accused by Toyin of dealing in drugs.

Meanwhile, Lizzy is of the opinion that Toyin has always being a cocaine user from the post she made on Instagram.

    Reactions

Veteran Yoruba actors, Yinka Quadri and Bolaji Amusan (Mr Latin) speaking on the issue in a video

Some of the veterans in the movie industry have intervened in the messy fight between the actresses.

Mr. Latin, who is the president of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), lamented the uncouth attitude of the actresses and expressed his disappointment over the ongoing controversy.

Veteran Yoruba actors, Yinka Quadri and Bolaji Amusan (Mr Latin) said they would not accept ”any act of indiscipline” from feuding actresses.

Toyin’s husband, Kolawole Ajeyemi, waded into the war of words by reiterating the need for the actresses to stop misbehaving on social media.

In the post, he wrote: “We ought to have use social media for more useful and impactful things and not this misbehaviour.

“We are called celebrities because many people look up to us and want to be like us. Why are we misleading these people, we are meant to be good teachers and not a bad influence on society. Please and please let’s have a change of mindset to do good, if not for anything for the fact that people are looking up to us in so many ways of life God bless you all.”

Sadly, these ‘social media feuds’ is not new to the movie industry scene. It has become very common among Yoruba actresses.

  • VAT: What you need to know about ‘proposed increase’ from 5% – 7.5%

    By Alao Abiodun

After 26 years, the Federal Government has made the proposal to increase the rate of Value Added Tax (VAT) from five per cent to seven point five per cent with effect from 2020.

Here is what you need to know about the proposed ‘VAT Increment’ and how the hike affects you. Alao Abiodun Reports

What is Value Added Tax (VAT)?

Value Added Tax (VAT) in Nigeria is a consumption tax that is backed up by the Value Added Tax Act of 1993. It is a Federal Tax which is managed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

VAT is a multi-stage tax which is imposed on goods and services as they pass through the various stages in the business chain. From manufacturing, importation, wholesaling and retailing but however, the burden of the payment is borne by the final consumer because it is included in the selling price.

The VAT Act 1993 provides for a recover-ability system whereby VAT, which is paid during the course of production, is recovered by the taxpayer in form of input VAT and ultimately passed down to the final consumer.

VAT is calculated at a flat rate of 5% of the cost of service and products and is charged on a wide array of goods and services in Nigeria. Much as it is known that VAT will increase the revenue base of Nigeria, it cannot be free from some problem.

The scope and coverage of VAT is extremely broad and applies to all imported, supplied or manufactured goods and services in Nigeria, except those that are specifically listed as exempt or zero-rated.

    Only a few items are exempted from VAT in Nigeria. These include exported services and items such as;

    ·         Medical and pharmaceuticals products

    ·         Basic food items

    ·         Baby products

    ·         Medical services

    ·         Plays and performances conducted by educational institutions as part of learning

    ·         Materials and equipment imported for use in downstream gas activities.

Suppliers of exempted goods are not required to charge VAT on their sales and cannot claim input tax for VAT paid on their purchases.

    The background

On September 11, the Federal Executive Council agreed to hike in Value Added Tax, VAT from 5 per cent to 7.5 per cent.

The decision of the federal government to undertake this increment was not unexpected as there had been murmurings in government circles on the need for an increase of the country’s VAT.

However, the increment of Value Added Tax from five per cent to 7.5 per cent have continued to spark up mixed reactions from financial analyst and Nigerians at large.

It should be noted that the federal governments’ plan to generate more revenues to finance national development led to the creation of ‘Strategic Revenue Growth Initiative’ which in turn birthed the VAT Increment.

However, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, has said that the proposed increase of the Value-Added Tax (VAT) rate by the federal government is subject to the review and approval of the National Assembly.

Read Also; Why NLC should resist the VAT increment

Ahmed said the decision will be communicated to the National Assembly for consideration alongside the 2020 Appropriation Bill.

    How the hike affects Nigerians

Almost every Nigerian can attest to the fact that the cost of living is currently higher than it was in previous years.

From a simple economic point of view, any increase in VAT would disproportionately affect poor people.

Going deeper, the biggest challenge is that any increase in indirect taxes affects the price of goods and services. This in turn would affect the country’s inflation rate.

If the Value Added Tax (VAT) increased to 7.5 per cent is implemented, it is expected to generate not less than N2trillion into the government treasury in 2020.

According to statistics, Nigeria has one of the lowest VAT which is a variant of sales tax in the world. Asides Eritrea, which also has a five percent rate, Nigeria is the only other country in Africa with a single digit VAT of five per cent.

Globally the highest sales tax rate is held by Bhutan which has 50 per cent sales tax.

In Africa, Madagascar and Morocco hold the highest rate at 20 per cent followed by Cameroon which has a 19.25 per cent sales tax. Niger holds a 19 per cent rate.

Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Congo, Mali all have a sales tax rate of 18 per cent.

Kenya and Zambia hold 16 per cent while Ethiopia, Gambia, South Africa, Zimbabwe all hold 15 per cent rates.

Egypt holds 14 per cent while Ghana and Botswana have 12 per cent sales tax. Somalia and Angola alongside Djibouti and Comoros all have 10 per cent sales tax rate.

The National Tax Policy, the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) and the 2018 International Monetary Fund (IMF) Report on Nigeria have all stress the need for an increased focus on revenue generation from VAT in Nigeria. While the dwindling oil prices is no longer news, the weakness of the naira against the

While many economic analysts have viewed the VAT rate now as ‘bad timing’ or perhaps ‘ill-timed’ and inconsistent with current economic reality, they are of the idea that the increase will lead to higher inflation, interest rate hike, more unemployment and generally make people poorer.

A closer look also reveals that this will affect market operations, especially the formal sector because an increase will discourage consumption (People will tend to buy fewer items to save cost). This will hurt businesses and affect employees.

    The minimum wage dilemma

Sadly, for more than four months after President Muhammadu Buhari signed the new minimum wage bill into law, workers in the country are yet to begin to benefit from the increment.

It is crystal clear that the government already owes the workers a backlog of arrears. The longer the negotiation on consequential adjustment takes, the more the backlog of arrears will leave a huge debt burden on government.
