FRSC survey indicates 72% commercial drivers operate under alcohol influence

Seventy-two per cent drivers tested for alcohol on the highways in Lagos State are under the influence of alcohol, a survey by the Federal Roads Safety Corps ( FRSC ) has revealed.

Hyginus Omeje, the Lagos Sector Commander of FRSC, who made the revelation on Thursday that the survey was carried out by the command.

Omeije spoke at the flag off of the Guinness/FRSC Ember Month campaign against road crashes tagged “Responsible Drinking’’.

The programme is aimed sensitising private and commercial drivers against dangers inherent in drink-driving.

Highlights of the programme started about 13 years ago during ember month includes road shows, public talk and awareness at various motor parks and garages among others.

Omeije said the test which was carried out at random shows that drink-driving is more prevalent among the commercial drivers.

“In a survey conducted by the men of Lagos Command on alcohol testing using our Breathliser, it shows that 72 per cent of those tested did not pass the required level of alcohol.

“The survey was carried out randomly and no particular class of vehicle was a target but the result shows that between the 42 and 72 per cent of commercial drivers tested positive.

“To put the record straight, private cars owners, articulated vehicle drivers and government fleet drivers were also tested during the operation, but what comes to mind is the result from the test, the purpose of the survey.

“The survey was made possible through the digital beathliser machine used to test the alcohol level in the blood donated by Guinness Nig. Plc, there is no bias in the exercise,’’ he said.

Omeje said the insinuation that a particular set of road users were targeted by its men were unfounded, claiming that the result of the survey had vindicated the corps.

“We are not out to witch-hunt anyone, the test were done randomly. The result also has it that only negligible number of private cars owners are guilty of drink-driving.

“The result also shows the mindset of the commercial drivers when it comes to this issue. Anyone caught and found guilty will be made to pay a fine or face the mobile court.

“We have zero-tolerance to drink-driving and we have various punitive measures to drivers who are found guilty.

“Sometimes, we take the campaign to the motor parks and the driver that failed the test was made to lose his turn as the passengers were trans-loaded to another vehicle,’’ he said.

The commercial drivers as against punitive measures.

“We will continue to educate those drivers on the dangers of drink-driving. Ours is to give more support to educating more people on responsible drinking.

“We will continue to give our support because of our policy on safety and also making our roads safe.

“We are producing responsible drinks and we want our consumers to be responsible too, we are encouraging responsible drinking,’’ he said.

Federal Road Safety Corps is the Government Agency with statutory responsibilities for road safety administration in Nigeria.

Founded in 1988, the Federal Road Safety Corps operates in all Nigerian states as well as the Federal Capital Territory.

  • Ogun ‘church’ where Satan is a ‘brother’, worshippers are served alcohol

Ogun ‘church’ where Satan is a ‘brother’, worshippers are served alcohol

Without doubt, churches have denominations and patterns of worship differ, but when you stumble on one, where weird activities are the order of the day and alcohol, animal sacrifices and biblical villains like Nebuchadnezzar, Ahab and even Satan are deified, then you’ve just encountered worship redefined. Tabitha Pearl writes.

A Christian worship centre or church is a place where you expect everything but the absurd and the weird. But this was precisely what this reporter beheld few weeks back when she went snooping at “As God said, It Must Be Done, The temple of the Most High God,’ located in Oke-Aro in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.

A mere N100 bus ride from the popular Agege/Pen Cinema Bus-Stop, took this reporter to As God Said Street – the street is named after the church. A short commercial motorcycle ride took this reporter to the church’s doorstep.

The temple is flanked on one side by what used to be a mosque and the other by a Celestial Church of Christ, which, strangely, wasn’t holding any service this Sunday. This reporter was, however, to soon discover during the nearly 10-hour-long service, that the mosque and the Celestial church had to evacuate their locations because of the new “Sheriff” in town.

The first thing that catches your attention as you walk into the church premises, depending on your keenness of sight, would either be the rather heavy use of the colours red and white; or the slaughter slab on the far right corner, though carefully concealed by the gigantic red gate. Beside the slab, this fateful Sunday was a black goat waiting to be slaughtered and served to worshippers. Makes some sense though. If worshippers have to stay in church up to 10 hours or more, it just might be normal to consider feeding them.

Inside the temple, the love for red is even more pronounced. The floor has a fading red colour, which tells you it had originally been painted with glossy red paint; even the choir and a few members bear a touches of red on their dresses. No usher is seen ushering people in; there actually is no need for one, as the sitting arrangement is glaring enough, even to a first timer. Male worshippers sit to the right while female worshippers sit to the left.

Another thing you cannot miss as you walk into the temple is the altar. It is divided into two sections: a very high one, probably the holy of holies, reserved for the Most High, should he come visiting; and then a lower one, possibly where the seer, fondly called Papa, preaches from, whenever he returns from a visit to the Most High, which he claims he does often.

“I still communed with the Most High last month. I sit and discuss with Him often. I know his form. Who says we can’t see God?” he boasted amidst wild cheers from his followers.

On the higher altar is a massive chair, the type you find in kings’ palaces. That’s probably where the Most High sits when he visits. On the lower altar is a replica of that same seat, possibly for the Papa. On the far left of the lower altar is a seat like the earlier ones, only smaller in size. This is where the wife of the seer sits during service, albeit only on the invitation of her husband.

Right above the higher altar or holy of holies, is a line-up of some relics, the sort you’re only likely to find in a herbalist’s shrine. The most conspicuous of these would be an elaborate form of a skull, placed in the middle of two crossed bone-shaped pieces of woods – pretty much like the familiar skull and bones image, used to depict danger and death. There is also something like a big calabash, placed in the middle, leaving a first-timer wondering if this is a shine or a temple where God is worshipped.

Sunday Nation’s visit coincided with the 6th Anniversary Celebration of the worship centre. It was with great excitement that the seer, Blessed Dike-Oji-Ofo Chukwu announced to the dance-intoxicated congregation that, “Today, we are celebrating our sixth year of moving to this temple.”

This announcement was followed by an excited cheer from the worshippers.

The service, which was said to have begun at 8:30 am, ran for hours unending, with more than half the time spent singing and dancing, and – wait for this –  spraying those perceived by the seer to have danced best with money. Interestingly, the children seemed to be more favoured in the money rain, above the adults. In order to be sure if this was the general mode of worship or just a one-off thing to commemorate the anniversary celebration, our reporter sought the opinion of a female congregant.

Her excited response was, “When we come to the temple on Sundays, we are not in a hurry. We close when the seer says we will close, even until night, if that’s what he wants.”

After hours of singing, dancing and collecting contributions (tithe of the most high, answered prayer offering, temple offering, Caesar’s offering, offering of the earth altar – Exodus 20:24) from the congregants, this reporter was almost giving up on the hope of seeing the seer come out to deliver his sermon, when, to the relief of all members, he emerged at exactly 2:00pm – six whole hours into the service.

After speaking elaborately about the 6th anniversary and outlining the achievements the church has accomplished in the last six months, part of which, according to him, includes having the street where the temple is located named after it, the evacuation of the mosque and celestial church in the neighbourhood, amongst others;  he pronounced many blessings on the worshippers and began the day’s sermon.

“In just six years of our moving to this place, the street has been named after us; the mosque and Celestial church that we met here have left for us; no member of this temple has died; I have been made the Mayegun of Fakile land… I prophesy to you, you will not fail, you will succeed, you will prosper; old and young will take risk for you to succeed; big and small will swear an oath for you to rise up and shine. In the name of the ancient of the days, I bless every one of you… In your marriages, you will succeed in the name of the living God. The sun will not smote you by the day, neither will the moon smote you by the night; you will be protected. So shall it be in the name of the king of kings, in the name of the lord of hosts. In the name of the ‘God’ of “Nebuchadneze,” I bless thee. The ‘God’ of my ancestors, “Nebuchadnezzar” will change your story. As you have been serving “Nebuchadnezzar”, on this first day in the month of September 2017, “Nebuchadnezzar” is your ancestor and he will reward you; Pharaoh will reward you, Ahab will reward you. In the name of the living God I bless thee.”

After the prayer rain, the seer bellowed, “You’re free to ask me any kind of question after the teaching this afternoon. We are not operating the way other men of God operate; we operate by the inspiration of the living God.”

After this announcement, the sermon began without any introduction. The seer spoke about bishop and pope, how they are titles given by men not God. “Bishop and Pope is not recommended by God. Check from Genesis to Revelation, you can never see the title of Pope. If you check in the book of Titus, you will see a bishop is a man who is up and doing. All our deacon and deaconesses here, you are the same rank with bishop, there is no special title in that name, bishop. They can deceive men, not somebody like me.”

Quoting a passage in Titus, the seer asked the congregation to open their Bibles, so they could read together what the bible says about bishops. After searching the book of Titus without success, the seer’s reader came to the congregation’s rescue. The passage was actually in 1Timothy 3:1, not Titus. After the reading, he began another talk about Moses and Zippo rah. Soon, it was question time.

“Before I open the floor for questions, I want to appreciate one of my sons. I was in my palace when he called to say he had a gift for the temple. It was surprising what he brought; three cartons of big stout, one carton of ’33 Larger and one carton of Captain Black. We will soon share the drinks, but before then, come forward, my son, let me bless you.”

After praying to the Most High to bless the young man and prosper his business, the seer called forward a lady whose face betrayed no emotion. It was hard to tell if she was happy, sad or just didn’t care. By virtue of marriage, she had just become a new member of the church and was given a special seat among the women who sat in front row.

Soon, it was question time. The first question came from a boy, who was home for the long vacation. He wanted to know why the seer preaches that Jesus is not the saviour of the world and why they don’t pray in the name of Jesus. Indeed, this reporter had noticed all along that they weren’t praying in the name of Jesus, neither was the name mentioned throughout the service. In fact, songs that had the name in the name of Jesus were carefully edited and replaced with Saviour, Lord or Most High.

The seer’s response to the boy’s question however, was, “God is the Saviour of the whole world, not Jesus. It is the gospel of John that claims Jesus died for the sins of man; but let me tell you, the New Testament is a lie. The original word of God is the Old Testament; the New Testament is the gospel of men, and untrue.”

The obviously dissatisfied questioner, was, however, soon silenced with a promise of scholarship for an academic session, for exhibiting great intelligence. The worshippers also went wild with joy at this pronouncement, and everyone soon forgot that the boy’s question wasn’t quite answered.

Next, a man who spoke impeccable English, took the mic and asked, “Do you believe in life after life?” The seer’s response was affirmative. “Of course, there is life after life. Every time we say somebody died, what happened is that the person just changed address. Maybe the person closed his eyes (not died) in Oke-aro, he may wake up in Cotonou as a foreigner; or somebody else may sleep in Oke-aro and wake up in Ibadan. That is life after life, continuation of life. That is why the Most High gave everyone 1,000 years to live in this life. When you’ve lived up to 1,000 years, you’d have completed your sojourn in this life, you will now become among the ancestors.”

The idea of becoming one of the ancestors pleased the worshippers and got them cheering again, loudly.

Another worshiper, a lady, asked what this reporter considered a very important question: “Why do you say that our ancestors are Nebuchadnezzar, Pharaoh, Ahab? In other churches, they pray against these names.”

The seer’s response was, “They lack knowledge. Nebuchadnezzar is my ancestors. Satan is my elder brother. See, that name Nebuchadnezzar is not a personality but a phenomenon. It means the wrath of God upon his children. But all those churches that pray against these names don’t understand. Is it possible to have the goodness of God and not have his wrath? That’s Nebuchadnezzar. My daughter, do you understand?” This was followed by a nod from the worshipper and a loud cheer from the congregation.

At this point, this reporter burned with curiousity and wanted to ask several questions: “Can they call themselves Christians if they don’t believe in Jesus Christ? Why do they still perform animal sacrifices? Why is the altar divided into two sections and what do the relics on it symbolize? Why do men cover their head while praying? Is it true they drink alcohol during service and why?

But it was another female member, who got the mic to ask her question. She began by introducing herself as a first-timer, but the seer counseled her not to call herself a first-timer. “Don’t call yourself a first-timer. There are no first-timers in the presence of the Most High. You are just a lost child, who has found her way home, and the Most High is always ready to receive you.

Her question was, “Why did you direct us to read from the New Testament this morning, even though you said it’s all a lie?” That was to be the last question of the day, because the seer was obviously thrown off balance and events soon overtook the question time.

“This lady you are seeing is a very intelligent lady;” the seer began. Pointing to the male section, he continued, “That’s her husband over there and it is whatever she says that happens in her marriage.” Soon, the question was left unanswered and a prayer and thanksgiving session began for the supposed couple, whom the seer said was believing God for the fruit of the womb. It turns out that this assertion was false, as this reporter had met the couple on their way out and they revealed that they were not even engaged, much less married, and neither had they need for children as the seer had declared.

But, why didn’t they refute what he said since it wasn’t true? The guy, who gave his name as Ade, said, “We were directed by a friend to consult the seer to see if we are destined for each other. But with that false prophecy, we know better than to believe anything he says.”

    Drinking time

After praying for the couple, the seer asked for the drinks offered by the male worshipper to be brought in. After taking two bottles himself, he opened one bottle each for the women occupying the special seat in front, after taking a swig from each bottle. Children and adults who do not take alcohol were served 7’UP.

Amidst the drinking, one lady began staggering for nearly 15 minutes. An easy guess would be that it was the effect of the wine, but she soon steadied herself and requested for the mic. She had a testimony. According to her, her menstrual flow had ceased for about three months, but when she ate kolanut in church the previous Sunday, her menses began to flow again. The seer took time to explain that in the early days of his ministry, he used to serve his members the emblem used in other assemblies (unleavened bread and fruit of the vine) but after a while, the Most High warned him not to give the bread and fruit of the vine to his sons and daughter or else he will slay them. Now, their emblem for communion is kolanut and blended alligator pepper.

In a bid to prove his position on the regular emblems, the seer went to his ‘palace’ to produce the unleavened bread, which he ordered them pass round for the congregants to see. A few of them, who had at one time or the other taken the bread, requested to have a taste of it. He obliged them, while announcing, “I know that I said the most high asked me not to give you people this thing, but don’t worry, this one you are eating will not kill you.”

As at 5;00pm when this reporter quietly left the temple, the service had yet ended. Kolanut was about to be served and they still awaited the meal that was being prepared with the goat that was slaughtered earlier on.

  • Davido and co: No thanks to alcohol

Davido and co: No thanks to alcohol

I intend a pun of how the death incidents that have trailed pop singer, David Adeleke, aka Davido, in the last one week are turning out. Pardon me if this offends sensibilities in view of the departed souls; life itself is such an ‘irony’.

In case you’re just reading this for the first time, three acquaintances of the rave singer died in mysterious circumstances – within one week. The first, which is causing more uproar, was about Tagbo Umeike, who, according to autopsy, died of suffocation. The other two friends – DJ Olu and Chime were found dead in a car, few days after.

To what many would call a suspicious coincidence, Tagbo may have been suffocated to death inside his car, going by the lead given the police from a whistle blower and actress Caroline Danjuma who claimed she was affianced to the deceased.

Caroline who is known for some controversial altercations with celebrities was right afterwards, but not many saw it that way when she first called out Davido, insisting that the singer knew more than meets the eye.

But for the actress, who gave the police a lead, we probably wouldn’t know the extent to which Davido and his other friends were involved in the circumstances under which Tagbo passed.

That aside, 40 shots of Tequila, as reportedly consumed by Tagbo on the eve of his demise, is capable of leading any man to self-slaughter. Caroline was wrong there – a man is capable of the unexpected. Tagbo proved this, albeit posthumously, and Caroline must be too stunned to argue. How could she? Tagbo isn’t alive to claim witnesses lied.

Perhaps it doesn’t matter now that Tagbo drank to stupor, “why did you do it?” could have been Caroline’s next question. And he could have made her happy by confirming it wasn’t for the money. Yes, Caroline claimed he hailed from a wealthy family, and didn’t need a bet of N200, 000. And I bet, Tagbo could have said to her, ‘I did it for fun’.

I doubt that Caroline’s hard feeling towards Davido means that she wants him to dance naked; my diction for life imprisonment, the worst penalty for manslaughter, should it be ascertained that Tagbo died as a result of the carelessness of Davido and company.

I guess she merely wanted Davido to confirm what she already knew about how Tagbo died. She didn’t claim he killed Tagbo, but it was worrisome to her that the singer should feign ignorance of the situations leading to his death.

Now that we all know, according to the police, that Davido lied because he probably didn’t want anyone linking him to his friend’s passing, what would the police charge him for, and what would be the verdict of the court of law?

If you ask me, Davido is at the mercy of the police. It doesn’t matter what fans and foes of the singer think. The police as forerunners in this case will determine, to a large extent, what the outcome of the case will be in court – if it ever gets to the court at all.

Whatever the outcome of this matter, lessons must be learned. Youths, whether in showbiz or other endeavors must be cautioned about the slippery nature of their age. Alcohol must be condemned in the reckless form that the late Tagbo, Davido, and friends abused it.

If Tagbo was not so drunk, he probably would not have been locked up in the car as claimed, to the extent of suffocation. If his friends were not drunk too (irrespective of the degree), ‘their second’ sense would be active to know that it is dangerous for Tagbo to be locked up in the car (whether or not it was the deceased that pressed the lock button). The remote cause is the sorrow and regret that now pervade the air.

Concerning the late DJ Olu and Chime, autopsy is what everyone is waiting for, and we are sure to learn a lesson or two from their misfortune too – who knows?

  • Alcoholic couple sells baby to buy booze

Alcoholic couple sells baby to buy booze

An impoverished alcoholic couple in Jharkhand’s Bokaro district of India, on Monday, sold its one-and-a-half-month-old baby boy to a quack for Rs 45,000 for buying their daily dose of liquor, police and Child Welfare Committee (CWC) members told Hindustan Times on Monday.

The couple later pleaded innocence to the police claiming outrageously that they sold the infant “unknowingly”. The father of the infant, Rajesh Hembrom who works as a washer man in Bokaro is 30 years old while his wife is 28.The couple already has five children, all under the age of ten.

Police swung into action after the couple’s neighbours tipped them off on Sunday about the deal with the quack.

According to www.hindustantimes.com, Policemen in mufti met the couple and traced the quack who had already handed over the baby to a 50-year-old man, Meghu Mahato, a resident of the same district. Mahato is childless.

“The agent Santosh Sahish, who is a quack, took away the baby after paying Rs 45,000 in cash to the couple. He handed over the infant to an old man who lives in Chakradharpur,” said Dhirendra Kumar, an assistant sub-inspector who is probing the case.

Santosh and Mahato were sent to the Bokaro Jail on Monday on charges of trading an infant, he said. The baby was reunited with its parents.

The Bokaro CWC which intervened in the matter and found that the couple was addicted to alcohol and needed the money to buy their daily dose of liquor.

“They have confessed that they were addicted to alcohol and needed money to buy liquor every day. They were probably inebriated during the deal as well and the quack had persuaded them to go ahead with it to have sufficient liquor,” said CWC member Prabhakar Kumar.

He added that the CWC has taken it in writing from the couple that they should be held responsible if the baby goes missing again. The CWC will also visit the couple’s place every fortnight to check on the infant.

Baby trade has been a growing concern in poverty-stricken rural Jharkhand. Cases of poor couples selling off their babies for money have come to light even in the past, say anti-child trafficking activists.

A six-month-old baby girl was allegedly sold for Rs 15,000 under a registered deed on a Rs 20 stamp paper in Ranchi in July 2015.

Jharkhand is blighted by large-scale child trafficking and forced surrogacy rackets, primarily exploiting the tribal community. The state accounts for at least 10,000 trafficked children as bonded labourers across the country every year, civil society organisations say.

Though the police did not find any evidence proving involvement of the Bokaro quack in any such racket, CWC members said that he was allegedly involved trafficking minor girls on pretext of medical treatment.

“There were rumours that he (Santosh) had taken Rs1.5 lakh from Mahato for the deal, but Mahato is yet to confess any monetary exchange with him,” said investigating officer Kumar.

Tonto Dikeh abuses alcohol and marijuana, husband reveals

Dr Olakunle Churchill, the estranged husband of Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh, has blasted the latter, saying she abuses alcohol, marijuana and is temperamental.
Churchill, a Ghana-based businessman and owner of Big Church Group of companies said this in an interview with Media Room Hub TV published over the weekend.
About a fortnight earlier, Tonto had granted the same station an interview where she lambasted Churchill for domestic violence among other things.
Relaying the incident which happened in Ghana, Churchill said he picked her from the airport a day before her birthday in 2015. However, due to a misunderstanding she spent the night in a hotel. He said Tonto came to his house the next day in the afternoon and “started breaking everything in the house. Luckily for me, I switched off the electric fence wire before I left the house. So, she started from the electric fence.”
Churchill said she destroyed many things in his house.
“There is this thing about my wife. It’s just like crisis. It doesn’t stop for like two, two and half hours. I’m sorry about this but I have to say it.”
Explaining what he means by ‘crisis,’ Churchill said, “she gets too temperamental due to her negative intakes. I don’t know. I don’t want to say anything about that but it got to that point.”
Churchill however, continued and clarified, “alcohol abuse, negative, marijuana, negative, anything that has something to do with drugs. When you’re always on a trip.”
Churchill said her anger erupted as she was rude to the police officials and even spat on one of the police officers.
“When her anger starts, six men can’t hold Tonto down, talk less of me beating Tonto. It’s not possible. She uses everything she has. Everything I have, she destroyed everything to zero.”
Churchill also dismissed as lies that he didn’t buy Tonto luxury gifts, saying he had receipts to everything.
Churchill revealed that he met Tonto about two and half years at his brother’s birthday party and they exchanged contacts. He said Tonto got pregnant for him six months later and he decided to marry her.
The couple have a one-year old son named King.
In February, Tonto revealed that there were cracks in her marriage via an open letter on Instagram.

  • Christians must avoid alcohol, divorce, says James

The General Overseer of Glory Christian Ministries, Lagos, Pastor Iruofagha James has strongly condemned the high level of alcoholism and divorce among Christians.

He spoke ahead of the church’s annual eight-night of prayer and praise billed for August 1 – 8 with the theme: “The God of signs and wonders”.

James is angry that many Christians are addicted to wines under the pretence that they have low alcoholic contents.

He said it is better for Christians to altogether avoid alcoholic drinks because of their addictive tendencies as well as medical reasons.

Christians, he argued, should be filled with the Holy Spirit, instead of wines.

On divorce, he lamented that many Christians are embracing it as an option owing to certain inexcusable factors.

James declared that God hates divorce and no reason is good enough to any Christian to consider leaving his or her partner.

Marriage, he said, is a lifetime contract that can only be annulled by death.

He said men chasing women they have no intention of marrying are like dogs chasing cars they have no intention of driving.

Describing such men as fools, he said they merely burn away godly resources, strength, character and value deposited in them for vain pleasure.

He challenged Christians to see their spouses as partners regardless of their weaknesses.

  • Avoid alcohol, expectant mothers told

    Avoid alcohol, expectant mothers told

Expectant mothers have been advised to stay away from beer and other alcoholic drinks. This is because its potential negative impact on growing foetus can lead to birth defects.

According to Prof Tola Atinmo, a  nutritionist at the University of Ibadan, it is better for a woman, especially expectant mothers, to abstain  from alcohol before conception, and throughout pregnancy. This, he explained, is because an  embryo’s liver cannot process alcohol like  an adult’s.

“If a mother to be’s blood alcohol level is over the limit, so is that of her foetus  and a foetus’s liver isn’t prepared (as a mother’s is) to process that much alcohol. The bottom line is that abstinence is best,” said Prof Atinmo.

He warned that pregnant women who take alcohol risk giving birth to a child with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).  The conditions, which range from mild to severe, include speech and language delays, learning disabilities, abnormal facial features, and small head size, among many other problems.

Experts say that women with certain risk factors should be  careful about alcohol while pregnant. You probably should not drink, for example, if you have liver disease, a history of addiction, or are on any medications that may conflict with alcohol, such as anti depressants.

And if you’re concerned that you are drinking too much and feel that you cannot stop during your pregnancy or at any other time, talk with your doctor. He or she can refer you for counseling or treatment, he said.

There are still many unanswered questions about the risks of drinking moderate amounts of alcohol during pregnancy, including how much it takes to cause birth defects and why some babies seem to be affected and others are not.

We know that women who drink heavily during pregnancy have an increased risk of having a child with Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Babies with FAS have a constellation of severe lifelong problems: They’re born smaller, often continue to grow poorly, and have physical abnormalities and learning and behavior problems.

But full-blown FAS are only the extreme end of the spectrum of what can happen when you drink alcohol during pregnancy. A broader category known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) affects many children whose mothers drank various amounts while pregnant. These children don’t have all of the physical features of FAS but do have learning and behavior problems.

Prof Atinmo said even researchers don’t know enough about the potential effects of drinking alcohol at particular times during  pregnancy to be able to say that any time is really safe. It’s also difficult to predict the impact of drinking on any given pregnancy because some women have higher levels of the enzyme that breaks down alcohol.

“If a pregnant woman with low levels of this enzyme drinks, her baby may be more susceptible to harm because the alcohol may circulate in her body for a longer period of time,” he added.

On a general note, Prof Atinmo said a good percentage of women drink beer. However, many do not know their limitations. It is said that about 75 percent of women over estimate the calorie content of beer. They believe it is beer that gave their husbands the abdominal fat ‘beer belly’, not knowing that it is their over-feeding of the man. Nutritionists have maintained that Beer does not contain fat and, in fact, has lesser calories than wine.

Prof Atinmo said: “A good number of women who take beer also drink it at social event. Some prefer it as a shandy with sweeter drinks like soft drinks or juices. Because of the resultant sweeter taste, they tend to drink more. In a society such as ours, there are various perceptions about the widely consumed white foamy liquid beer. While some of the perception might have dated back decades it doesn’t necessarily make them true. A recent studies from around the world are presenting arguments to counter the perceptions.

“For instance, to what extent is beer is responsible for the ‘beer belly’ condition in some men? Research has shown that beer alone cannot be responsible for this occurrence. ‘Beer belly’ is caused by too many calories in an individual’s diet (from over-eating, sugary food and beverages etc) and a sedentary lifestyle. More calories are ingested than what is burned. The excess is stored in the body as fat. Fat is stored more in the belly by men, hence the prevalence of ‘beer belly’ in men.”

He said this explained why women are not associated with the ‘beer belly’; “it is purely a consequence of fat stored. Women sure do consume the alcoholic beverage almost as much as some men. Research and studies have shown that beer is as suitable for women as much as it is for men. Like so many other alcoholic options, beer if consumed responsibly and in moderation, all the health benefits can be gained. Women, who consume beer in moderation, will benefit from the antioxidants  in beer which serves as protection against many forms of cancer,” said Prof Atinmo.

For new mothers,  research studies by Koletzko and Lehner (2000) have revealed that moderate beer consumption may help in the initiation and success of breastfeeding (Pregnant women are advised to stay away from beer as no safe level has been established for them.) It seems that a component of beer, perhaps a barley polysaccharide, promotes prolactin secretion.

The authors further suggest that the relaxing effects of alcohol and hop components might also have a beneficial impact on lactogenesis-the onset of milk secretion.

Beer has also been proven to enhance a healthy hydration process, as 92 percent of beer is water (though you should never substitute beer for water.) beer relieved stress in women. Research has further shown that there is a low risk of kidney stones in beer drinkers. Although it is imperative to take beer in moderation.

As a rough guide, The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests that 60 grams of alcohol per day should be a maximum. For a beer of five percent alcohol by volume, which equates to approximately four percent alcohol by weight, this means 1.5 litres or two bottles. Two to three units for women a day and three to four units for men a day.

Former Governor of Cross River State Mr. Donald Duke has emphasised that beer plays a significant role in the sustenance of good health and cultural cohesion.

Duke who, was the chairman of the Third Nigerian Beer Symposium held in Lagos said not only is beer low in carbohydrates, it is as all-natural as orange juice and milk.

“You see, beer has no need for preservatives because of the alcohol and hops- both of which are natural preservatives. The only processing beer undergoes is the same as with bread-it is cooked and fermented, filtered and packaged,” he said.

He maintained that it is most astounding that beer has no fat or cholesterol and when taken in moderation, at can tilt high- density lipoprotein levels (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol rations in the right direction.

“HDL is the good cholesterols that protect your veins while LDL is the bad cholesterols that build up in your veins. Beer actually flushes the system and can boost the HDL by up to four percent with just a single beer a day,” Duke said.

    •Public smokers for trial

Lagos State Government is working with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to flush out Indian Hemp and alcohol sellers at motor parks.

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Chief Executive Officer Christian Olakpe made this known at a Public Education and Enlightenment Programme held by LASTMA for articulated vehicles at Naval Park, Marine Beach, Apapa, Lagos.

He said driving under the influence of alcohol and drug abuse were major causes of accidents by articulated vehicles, adding that LASTMA will not fail to enforce traffic laws.

Olakpe said: “We are planning to partner with NDLEA to flush out these hangers-around who sell drugs and alcoholic drinks to them (drivers) anywhere we see them. We have also told them that when they are strapping their cargoes, they should strap them well and they should drive with reasonable speed.

“LASTMA is coming with full enforcement because we are going to include court processes, ticketing and impounding vehicles, penalising erring motorists. It will be very tough and total for those who don’t want to key into the change mantra of traffic law of Lagos.”

Lagos State chapter of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) Publicity Secretary Comrade Tayo Aboyeji hailed LASTMA for the programme, saying it is coming at the right time and will complement the association’s efforts.

Also yesterday, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) General Manager Bola Shabi said those who smoke in public would, henceforth, be prosecuted.

Shabi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that this would ensure high standard of safety in public places and ensure a sound well-being for residents.

He hoped that before the end of June, public smoking would have been reduced.

“People have started reducing their smoking habits in open places especially due to health reasons,’’ he said.

Shabi said those who did not comply with the directed would be sanctioned.

The General Manager said LASEPA had also warned events’ centre owners against indulging their customers on public smoking, stating that they must paste a non-smoking sign in such facilities
