Arsenal 2-2 PSG: Iwobi scores own goal in Gunners draw

Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi scored an own goal as Arsenal dropped down to second place in Group A after being held to a 2-2 draw by Paris Saint-Germain.

A win for Arsene Wenger’s side would have ensured that they would take their place among the seeds when the draw for the knockout stages is made next month but a late own goal from Alex Iwobi left the Premier League side facing the prospect of finishing as runners-up.

During the second half against Manchester United on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal scored with their only shot on goal and history repeated itself during the opening 45 minutes on Wednesday night.

After Blaise Matuidi had been set free down the left-hand side of the penalty area, he crossed for Edinson Cavani who slid in at the back post to tap home from three yards.

It was a goal which should have led to a response from the home team but they toiled against the French champions and it was PSG’s own doing that they did not reach half time with a one-goal advantage.

After Gregorz Krychowiak had brought down Alexis Sanchez in the penalty area, Olivier Giroud stepped up to fire his spot kick into the corner to undeservedly get his team back on level terms.

The same pattern of play continued after the restart before PSG came agonisingly close to retaking the lead when Lucas Moura’s 25-yard free kick hit the crossbar with Ospina beaten.

For the following 15 minutes, the Gunners did an effective job in stifling the visitors but as the game entered the closing stages, PSG found an equaliser when Moura’s header was deflected into his own net by Iwobi.

However, as Arsenal tired during the closing stages, it mattered little as PSG comfortably held on to leave their fate in their own hands when they face Ludogorets in Paris in two weeks’ time.

  • ALEX IWOBI: Okocha, dad, my guiding angels

ALEX IWOBI: Okocha, dad, my guiding angels

ALEX Iwobi is only 20 and the world is already looking up for him. A starting shirt with English top side, Arsenal, to join the ‘big-boys’ league, Champions League, debut, a regular shirt in the ever competitive Nigerian senior side, Super Eagles, and scoring his first goal for fatherland, all within one year of breaking into the big league!

A cousin to mercurial midfielder and ex-Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Iwobi, 20, says his uncle deserves commendation for bringing out the best in him.

“He was always talking with me, and my dad told me that I should listen to him. He is my uncle, but more than that; he is my mentor and guiding angel. My other guiding angels are my dad, mum and sister.”

He noted that Okocha would counsel him to keep his head down and be focused on his game. “I’ve always followed his game at the club and national levels and looking forward to achieving like he had done. My father would take me to his games and, after, he would take me to him and he would spend considerable time talking to me and advising me.”

Okocha’s mentoring helped him gain a lot of confidence and one match he said he will never forget is his Premier League debut against Swansea in October 2015.

Hear him: “That is one match I cannot forget because it gave me the confidence to join the big league. I looked up to a few guys and I wanted to do it like them but the fact I did it a different way, I’m proud of that. Every time I played for the U18s or the U21s, I just tried to perform to the best of my abilities and do the best I could. Whether I got the chance to play with the first team or train with the first team, I always tried to do my best. I’ve been saying it, where I am today being just crazy, but I give thanks to (Arsene) Wenger and many who have given me the confidence to play alongside them,”Iwobi says.

Aside from Okocha, the former England U-18 and U-21 forward is also fond of one man: Arsene Wenger.  He has kind words for the Frenchman, who he likened to ‘a father.’

“Wenger is like a father. He is gentle with newcomers like us and he would always spare some moments to have a one-on-one with us. I want to keep being consistent. I’m trying to prove to the world and to myself that I can maintain that level of performance.”

Away from the Emirates, Iwobi got a pat from the back from an unlikely source – Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary manager of Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson, in a widely circulated report, admitted he’s been ‘impressed’ with the Nigeria’s Arsenal winger who only emerged from the Gunners’ academy last season and became a first-team regular towards the end of the last campaign.

The 20-year-old forward is yet to score this term but he’s helped transform the Gunners’ play this season with Arsene Wenger’s side playing a more typical free-flowing brand of football than supporters have seen in the last few years.

And Ferguson admits he’s been impressed with the youngster, who he believes has helped to make Wenger’s side title rivals this term.

‘You shouldn’t forget Arsenal [in the title race],’ Ferguson told Kicker. ‘The team is more sturdy. They’ve got better and more aggressive. I’m impressed with the young boy Alex Iwobi.’

Iwobi here speaks further on the new Premiership season, his goals, inspiration and Super Eagles. Taiwo Alimi captures his words.

    Secret of success

I listen to lots of inspiring tapes and listen to what my father and mentors have to say. My mum, my dad and my sister are also there for me. They usually come to my games and that gives me lots of confidence. That is something Arsenal also promotes. They say it is confidence-booster and I agree with them. At least, it works for me. I keep my head down and focused. I train hard because training with the senior team is actually tough. During the break, I travelled and ate lots of carbs. So much rice and pasta. And I knew I must shed them off. I also go to bed much earlier. Sleep is very important; you need rest when you train hard.”

    Comparison with Okocha

Jay Jay is a legend. I am no close to him yet. But, I also like to get forward as much as I can and create chances. Arsene Wenger has given me confidence to keep playing the way I want to and to push forward. So, I intend to keep doing that. I’m flattered that people compare me with Jay Jay.

    Nigerians in Premiership

Ahmed Musa is a good player. I have played with him and one thing I can tell you for sure is that this guy is fast. I think he can do well in England because he is exactly what you want in a winger; he will go past people and can cross the ball well.

Mikel is great too and he has made me feel at home playing for Nigeria. He is like a brother figure there and highly committed. He’s always talking with the new boys and that is great. Kelechi (Iheanacho) is great player too and the way he has settled down into a big team like Man City is awesome. We talk sometimes, especially in the Nigerian camp and compare notes. Nigeria has very good players.

    Unforgettable games

The FA Cup game against Sunderland at Emirates in January was cool. We played at home and we won and so people took notice from then, really. I also think my performance

against Barcelona was great. For me, it was a confidence-booster. The manager has shown a lot of faith in me to pick me for a game like that, but I also proved something to myself that day when I realised I can perform at that level. I was buzzing after the game. I train with some of the best players in the world at Arsenal, but to play against Barcelona could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and the fact I thought I did all right made it even better. My only regret is that I didn’t get a shirt from a Barcelona player afterwards – I wasn’t sharp enough on the final whistle. Schoolboy error. But don’t worry I’ve got plenty of pictures – they are all saved on my phone.

Then, against Everton, my first start I scored my first Premiership goal and that was special too. I’ve always dreamt about scoring just one goal for Arsenal, and for it to come on my first start was just crazy. I couldn’t believe it.

    Assessment of current season

I need to get more goals and assists. I’ve not done badly but I must continue to strive to get better. That is important. I don’t want to be complacent. I know a lot of hard work is going to be required this season and I’m ready to put that in.  I’ve been putting my head down, getting on with it and putting in the work. My target is to play as many games as I can, get more assists and score more goals. That is all I think about.

    First goal for Nigeria

The goal against Zambia was a special one and my first for Nigeria. I actually scored in the friendly in Abuja and that gave the confidence that I can score again in a real match. We are like brothers in the team and that counts for something. I love the feeling and the songs, though I’m still learning many of them.

We have to remain focused on the next games and win as many as we can. We cannot afford to be complacent.

  • IWOBI’S WISH LIST & FAVOURITES

FRESH Prince Arsenal starlet Alex Iwobi wants his trademark goal celebration included in the next edition of FIFA and talks about his taste in music, match day diet and that “crazy” goal celebration.

My favourite subject when I was at school…

PE! I’m good at Maths, so I took that early. I didn’t like it, but I was good at it!

    The subject I hated was…

Probably History or something like that.

I was the best player in my school…

There were a lot of good players there, like my Arsenal team-mate Chuba Akpom. Everyone loved football at my first primary school.

The first time I was scouted…

I was playing for my local Sunday league team, Rippleway. My dad heard that a scout was there to watch me and Chuba – we were just playing and didn’t think anything of it.

    I could’ve joined west ham…

Arsenal and West Ham were interested in me and Chuba, so we were training with both clubs for three years, because we were scouted at six and you can’t sign until you’re nine.

    But I chose the Gunners…

I decided to sign for Arsenal because I supported them back then and I always saw them as the bigger club – no disrespect to West Ham!

    I don’t like to brag but…

I’m good at gaming – and I don’t even play a lot. All my friends will tell you that I do, but I only play a little bit.

My advice for those who want to be pro stars…

Just be yourself, express yourself all the time and enjoy your football. That’s the advice I was given as a kid – it’s what I’ve always been told.

    Before games, I eat…

A lot of pasta and rice, but of chicken as well. I eat carbohydrates before and after games – you need protein to help build up your muscles.

My favourite tv show when I was a kid…

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air! I don’t really watch TV that much now – only something like Family Guy at night when I’m going to sleep.

    I’m a massive fan of…

Drake. I was into rap and grime when I was a youngster, I don’t know why – it’s what I’ve grown up with.

One thing I really want to see…

I’d love to see them include my goal celebration in FIFA or PES next season. Oh yes!

Super Eagles striker, Alex Iwobi, is available for selection when Arsenal takes on Southampton in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Iwobi limped off in the 59th minute of Arsenal’s first Premier League game of the season; a 3-4 defeat to Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on August 14, supersport.com reports.

The attacker began full training earlier this week and the Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has now confirmed that the 20-year-old could play a part in Saturday’s game at the Emirates Stadium.

“Iwobi is back in the squad. The only one who is not ready is Aaron Ramsey.

“He is (in a) good way, but not completely ready for Southampton or Tuesday (when Arsenal face PSG in the UEFA Champions League),”supersport.com quoted Wenger as saying in his press conference on Friday.

Iwobi scored two goals in 13 league matches for Arsenal last season.

Ahmed Musa will succeed in England – Iwobi

Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi has tipped his Super Eagles teammate, Ahmed Musa, to succeed in the English Premier League (EPL).

The Arsenal youngster described the ex- CSKA Moscow forward as “very fast.”

Musa signed for Leicester City in a reported £16m deal to become the club’s record signing, and Iwobi believes the “flying” winger will justify the huge cash splashed on him by the English champions.

“Yeah, he is a good player. I have played with him and one thing I can tell you for sure is that this guy is fast,” Goal quoted Iwobi as saying to Bleacher Report

“I think he (Musa) can do well in England because he is exactly what you want in a winger. He will go past people and can cross the ball well.”

  • Wilshere a big inspiration for Arsenal youngsters – Iwobi

Wilshere a big inspiration for Arsenal youngsters – Iwobi

Super Eagles striker, Alex Iwobi, has said several youngsters in Arsenal ranks try to imitate England midfielder, Jack Wilshere’s “no-touch turn” move during training.

The 24-year-old Wilshere appeared for the first time in the Premier League this season in the Gunners’ goalless draw with Sunderland after recovering from an injury he picked up during pre-season training.

“He’s brilliant on the ball, he’s able to find space and he’s the master of the no-touch turn,” allnigeriasoccer.com quoted Iwobi as saying during the Arsenal matchday programme.

“He doesn’t even need to touch the ball, he just shields it with his body and turns away from defenders with ease. It’s something that some of us who are youth team players used to watch and then try in training.

“He’s a big inspiration for us. A couple of times in training we used to get together and practice the ‘Jack Wilshere turn,’ but nobody can do it as well as he can!”

  • Who is Alex Iwobi?

    Who is Alex Iwobi?

Joe Mewis of  Mirror writes on the strength and weakness of Arsenal’s Nigerian starlet….

    BACKGROUND

Iwobi was born in Lagos and has recently been the subject of an international tug-of-war between England and Nigeria. He has now committed to Nigeria after gaining caps for England’s Under-16, 17 and 18 teams. Gunners’ fans were given a glimpse of Iwobi’s obvious talents during pre-season, when he was a surprise inclusion in Arsene Wenger’s touring squad to Singapore, before he netted against Lyon in the Emirate’s Cup in August.

    STRENGTHS

Iwobi is extremely versatile, having played in every position from full-back to centre forward as he’s worked his way through the ranks at Hale End. Once his academy coaches figured out the best ways to utilise his talents, Iwobi has now settled in an attacking position where his pace, movement and eye for goal can be utilised. He responded with eight goals in 35 appearances last season for the Gunners’ Under-18 and under 19 sides in the 2013-14 season before making the step up to Steve Gatting’s Under-21 side, where he was regularly captaining the side by the end of last season.

Skilful Iwobi can also boast of quick feet and an efficiency in possession that makes him tailor-made to fit in Wenger’s system, should his recent progression continue on an upward trajectory.

    WEAKNESSES

Top of Iwobi’s to do list will be to improve his strike-rate. Perhaps it is due to the fact that he took a while to settle on a position as he rose through the ranks at London Hale, but if he can consistently add goals to his creativity and clever movement, then he will really be able to stake a claim for regular first-team action.

WHAT ARE THEY SAYING ABOUT HIM?

“I like his team attitude, his movement,” said Arsene Wenger following the 19-year-old’s goal scoring appearance against Lyon in August’s Emirate’s Cup.

“We have a game based on movement and speed, and he integrates that very well. He has good power and is usually efficient  he scores goals a lot.”

WHAT’S HE GOT TO SAY HIMSELF?

Iwobi was understandably very happy to put pen to paper and sign his new deal at the Emirates, saying he felt his hard work had been rewarded.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract, especially with a club like Arsenal who are so big,” he told the club’s official website. “I’m happy to sign for them.

“I like to think I have earned it. I have gone through a lot with Arsenal so to have a new and improved contract is very good and I’m happy to have earned it.

“I have had ups and downs. As I was growing up I had a lot of downs but as I get older things just keep getting better and better.

“The ultimate goal is to break into the first team and play as many games as I can.”
