ALEX IWOBI: I want to inspire young people to achieve full potential

Committed to leveraging his influence to advance and support young people and marginalised communities, Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi launched his pet initiative Project 17, in 2021 and has never let go the dream of the community inventiveness dedicated to educating, empowering, and inspiring youth, the wider community and supporters.

For the second year running, Alex hosted the annual Project 17 community day and mixed gender tournament at Enfield College, North London, with over 1,000 people in attendance.

This family-friendly event saw the local community come together for a jam-packed day of footballing fun and entertainment. Although this is the second year of the tournament format, Iwobi and Project 17 have been delivering a football and community day every summer for four years now, where young people meet some of their favourite footballers and watch them play.

Writing on his X handle, the Super Eagles star said the tournament was a success, while thanking participants for showing up. He wrote: “Big love to everyone that was involved and supported”

The football tournament consisted of 12 teams, with the winning team taking home the day’s Project 17 Cup. This event was a chance for people of all ages and all levels to put their skills to the test, as professional players, grassroots teams and football industry organisations such as Baiteeze Squad, SE Dons, 90s Baby Podcast, and Ballers in God went head to head on the pitch.

Alongside the tournament, Alex provided music and activities for the whole family. Including one-to-one skills challenges for those eager to pick up some new tricks.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to a charity very close to Alex’s heart – The Christian Mbulu Charity, dedicated to providing support for individuals between the ages of 13-18, and professional footballers.

Alex said: “Growing up we had nothing like this in my area. Sport really brings people together which is why I wanted to have an event the whole family and community could enjoy. I am so grateful to have a platform that I can use to try and make a difference, and am thankful to everyone who attended, supported or helped in making this such a great day and, most importantly, raising funds for a great cause, the Christian Mbulu Charity. I look forward to growing the event further next year.”

Iwobi launched Project 17 in February 2021. The project is aimed to share things learnt from football with his fans and followers and some off-the-pitch moments.

    PHILANTROPY IS PART OF IWOBI

For Iwobi, giving himself and supporting humanity work has always been apart for him.

While in Everton, Iwobi had learned about the incredible impact of the Fans Supporting Foodbanks initiative – and the generosity of Evertonians – by helping out at a Liverpool centre that supports more than 250 people with emergency food parcels each week.

“It saddens my heart that a lot of people, especially kids, are struggling for food,” Iwobi told evertontv. “People are working hard but they don’t make enough to take care of their own families.”

“So any little thing where we can help, it’s a pleasure.”

At Arsenal, Iwobi bagged a Community Action Award at the Best of African Awards (BOA).

Alex and the Project 17 is also partnering with Weetabix and Heinz who had a huge viral moment when they introduced the Weetabeanz combo. As a result of this challenge Alex and the Magic breakfast were able to feed over 60,000 young people.

Iwobi also participated in The Beder World Cup Experience, an exhibition and experience, harnessing the power of the World Cup, to raise awareness around mental health and suicide prevention in support of Beder and Beder FC.

Project 17 is now proud sponsors of local grassroots football team Redbridge Community FC. A great opportunity for Iwobi to invest in the next generation and provide them with opportunities to succeed, build friendships and create a pathway to achieving their football dreams and keeping them off the streets.

With the help of Puma, Iwobi and Project 17 were able to provide the team with new kits, training equipment and footballs.

Nigerians are ‘loud’, says Alex Iwobi

Fulham and Super Eagles player, Alex Iwobi, has shared his thoughts on Nigerians, describing them as ‘loud’.

He mentioned that Nigerians have distinct characteristics that set them apart such as being very expressive, particularly the Yorubas.

He disclosed this during a recent interview with Kiss Fresh in London, UK.

The host asked: “What do you love about Nigerians and being Nigerian?”

Iwobi replied: “You can smell a Nigerian from a mile away. Our mannerisms are so Nigerian, especially Yoruba people. Yoruba people are so loud.

“My favourite thing about the country is that everyone is so welcoming, rich in hospitality and it’s like one big family. Everyone who is doing well tries to give back to their communities. Every footballer that I am with always try to give back to where they come from. That’s an amazing thing.

“The first thing I do whenever I land in Nigeria and I’m in my hotel room, I order pounded yam and egusi.”

JUST IN: Alex Iwobi returns to social media after AFCON backlash

Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has made a return to social media following Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final game against Cote d’Ivoire.

The Nation reported Iwobi deleted all his Instagram posts over criticism that greeted his performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 27-year-old was the subject of cyberbullying from Nigerian fans following the Super Eagles’ 2-1 final defeat to the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire.

The Fulham star, however, received support from his teammates, the Nigeria Football Federation, and the Sports Ministry.

But weeks after, the Super Eagle returned to the platform, posting a video he captioned, “Lately”.

The video was a snippet of what appeared to be a yet-to-be-released rap song.

His post elicited a barrage of comments from fans and followers.

A number of his teammates including William Troost-Ekong, Frank Onyeka, and Kenneth Omeruo took to the comment section to show their support.

Alex Iwobi: I’ve experienced love and hate from fans

Since arriving at Craven Cottage in September, the Nigerian Fulham star has raked up interesting statistics.  Last week the Super Eagles midfielder shone like a million stars when Fulham hammered West Ham. Iwobi played a key role in Fulham’s 5-0 demolition of West Ham United, helping Marco Silva’s side to their second five-goal victory in five days.

Iwobi, who didn’t score on the day, provided an assist for one of the goals at Craven Cottage.

The win was Fulham’s fourth consecutive league game with 3+ goals, the first time they’ve achieved this feat in 62 years.

Raul Jimenez continued his impressive return to form, scoring the opening goal with a header from Joao Palhinha’s cross. The Mexican forward, who suffered a life-threatening skull fracture three years ago, has now scored four goals in his last five league games.

Fulham were in complete control by half-time, with Willian adding a second before Tosin Adarabioyo headed in the third from a corner.

Substitute Harry Wilson scored a stunning left-footed curler from the edge of the penalty area before Carlos Vinicius sealed the win late on after being teed up by Wilson.

The victory lifted Fulham into the top half of the table, three points behind ninth-placed West Ham.

Penultimate Wednesday, Fulham had produced a stunning performance to dispatch Nottingham Forest 5-0 with two goals from the creative midfielder.

Iwobi and Raúl Jiménez put Fulham in control of proceedings with two first-half goals before a  gorgeous Raúl back heel made it three, and Iwobi claimed a brace with a composed finish.

And there was still time for Captain Tom Cairney to cap his 299th appearance for the Whites with number five, which he celebrated in style with his adoring public behind the goal.

    MAN OF THE MATCH

A sign of good things to come was experienced back in September when Iwobi played his full debut match for Fulham.

He scored a goal and made an assist in the 2-1 win over Norwich City and was handsomely rewarded with the Man of the Match.

After the game, 47.5% of supporters opted for Iwobi as their standout performer. Fodé Ballo-Touré impressed on his first appearance at left-back, duly coming in second with 13.7%, ahead of Marek Rodák who claimed 11.9%.

    FPL POINTS FOR IWOBI

Iwobi further got the attention of Fantasy Premier League as he racked up valuable points to become one of Fulham’s big assets.

The Nigerian was the third player to get into double figures against Forest, with his tally of 14 the best he’s ever registered in Fantasy.

His two goals were the first time he had ever scored a brace in the top flight, and while he was only allocated one bonus point, he did claim an extra point courtesy of Fulham’s clean sheet.

Iwobi has been a valuable FPL asset over the years, with 679 points to his name since his debut for Arsenal back in 2015.

Now, Iwobi is enjoying fans and EPL ratings. Fans love and root for him. He said it hasn’t always been like that. He has seen the other side of life also.

“When you’re coming onto the scene and doing well, you see fans on social media and in the comments, and you want to see people hyping you up, I’ve also had the hate—that you’re not good enough. When I moved to Everton, there was a high fee (around €40 million or $42 million). Everyone said he costs so much and hasn’t done much. His value is way too high. I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen both sides. Now, I’m at an age where I don’t look at it anymore.

“At the same time, you want your fans to know what you’re like personally. And at the end of the day, I’m human—just like my fans. I post a bit (on social networks) to show I’m just a normal person.”

Relaxed and thoughtful in manner, he is. When statistics enter the frame, Iwobi—who joined Arsenal’s ranks aged eight—isn’t.

Of those who enter soccer academies aged nine in England and Wales, 99% don’t become professionals, according to The Professional Footballers’ Association, leaving some stranded and needing support. Fellow player Trent Alexander-Arnold is addressing the issue.

    OF SAUDI LEAGUE

So long the pinnacle, top players and leagues across Europe are also coming to terms with the Saudi Arabian soccer boom in top-level soccer, having seen dozens of stars leave the continent for cash-rich teams in the Gulf state over the summer.

From the inside looking out, the change has been equally significant, not least in West London; had star striker Aleksandr not departed for Pro League powerhouse Al-Hilal, he would have been one of Iwobi’s teammates.

“There’s much more money,” Iwobi remarks. “I mean, there are more countries involved in the sport. With Saudi Arabia, if you wanted to go there before, it would be like, ‘What are you going there for?’ But many professionals are going there, so the league is probably getting more competitive now.”

What he does know is the difference soccer makes to lives. Learning his trade in the capital, Iwobi played with people from various ethnicities, cultures, and backgrounds. Through his charity, Project 17, Iwobi aims to integrate individuals—such as those in minority groups—into society through sport. In many ways, it reflects his attitudes and sense of identity.

“I’ve realized that it’s powerful and brings communities together,” he muses out loud. “Growing up, I didn’t have many people coming to my area to organize matches. If they did, I’m sure everyone would have attended—the same as they did for me. I want them to know I’m the same as them,” added Iwobi.

Wizkid showed me love on first sight – Alex Iwobi

Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has eulogised afrobeats singer Wizkid based on their encounters years ago.

He explained how the afrobeats singer showed him “love” when he was still scratching the surface of his career.

The former Arsenal star said Wizkid was “nice” to him when they first met “even though he didn’t know who I was at the time.”

Speaking in a recent interview with Oma Sports TV, Iwobi said Wizkid’s concert at Tottenham stadium earlier this year “is my favourite Nigerian show, I really enjoyed myself.”

He described Wizkid as a “nice and very humble guy.”

He said: “Wizkid’s show at Tottenham stadium is my favorite Nigerian show, I really enjoyed myself. I didn’t get to meet him that day. But I’ve met him before and he’s a very nice and very humble guy.

“The first time I met him, he showed me love when he first met me even though he didn’t know who I was at the time. I’ve seen him in stores and even in the club as well, and he has always showed me so much love. He is someone that I really respect.”

  • Iwobi plays for 86 minutes, misses begging chance as Everton win

Super Eagles winger Alex Iwobi was in action for 86 minutes on Saturday as Everton earned a 2-0 victory over visiting West Ham United.

The Nigerian international, who was replaced in the 87th minute by Icelander Gylfi Sigurðsson, was very impressive but missed what Everton fans considered begging scoring chance while Everton were one goal up thanks to Bernard who had shot the homers into the lead in the 17th minute.

The former Arsenal man had a one on one situation with West Ham goalkeeper Roberto Jiménez but fired a weak shot straight at the goalkeeper to the disappointment of some of the fans who had already jumped into celebration mood.

Interestingly it was Sigurðsson who replaced Iwobi that scored the much awaited winner in the 2nd minute of added time

Last minute goal scorer Gylfi Sigurdsson

Saturday’s victory is a relief for Coach Marco Silva who has endured three back to back defeats in the hands of Burnley, Manchester City and Sheffield United respectively.

The bookmakers prior to this all important victory had tipped Silva as the favourite to be the next Premier League boss sacked and, while Everton have historically given their managers time, a fifth consecutive defeat would have pushed the Portuguese closer to the exit door.

  • Double headache for Iwobi as Marco Silva gets ultimatum

Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi will not only be bothered about posting a good performance against Brazil on Sunday, but will also be concerned about helping Everton Manager Marco Silva save his job.

The Everton boss has reportedly been handed three matches ultimatum by his employers who are getting worried about the team’s unimpressive run in the season so far.

The Daily Star says Silva has been told he has the next three matches to save his job on Merseyside.

The Portuguese manager has endured a nightmare start to the season with the Toffees, taking just two victories from eight matches played.

Everton, at this early point in the season, find themselves in the relegation zone and Silva has been told time is running out.

Silva had premonition he would be sacked during the international break, following Everton’s lacklustre defeat by Burnley.

Everton Manager Marco Silva eager gets ultimatum

Crisis talks are said to have taken place at Goodison, during which the dooms day was delayed but Silva was informed in clear terms the results of the next three games would have large bearing on his future.

Nigeria international Alex Iwobi who joined Everton from Arsenal in August this year for an initial £28 million, rising to £34 million with potential add-ons has blended perfectly and has been impressive in five matches he has played for the side so far.

With the new development however there are strong indications that manager Marco Silva will apply additional pressure on his players with a view to remedy the situation.

Iwobi currently in Singapore ahead of the international friendly against Samba Boys of Brazil is tipped to start and the Gernot Rohr tutored side attempt to perform better than Senegal who only yesterday held the Brazilians to a 1-1 draw.

  • Victor Osimhen eyes goal No. 7 as Lille tackles Nice

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen will be hoping to continue his goal scoring adventure when Lille visits Nice on Saturday.

Osimhen who has scored in practically in all recent outings for The Great Danes, is full of optimism that the club will post impressive run this season.

He was quick to call on teammates to forge ahead after the 3-0 defeat away to Ajax in the Champions League.

In the English premier league Alex Iwobi posted and impressive run in Everton’s 2-0 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday in the Caraboa cup will be hoping to maintain the momentum as the Toffees host rampaging Manchester City who were merciless against Watford in the their last premier league outing and followed it with another 3-0 defeat of Preston North End in the Caraboa cup.

    Everton ace Alex Iwobi

Iwobi and his teammates will need all the arsenals in their armory to checkmate the Citizens who appear to have forgotten how to lose match though their 3-2 loss to Norwich city remains a reference point in some quarters.

Although Nigeria born England junior international Tammy Abraham was missing in the score sheet in Chelsea’s 7-1 demolition of Grimsby Town in the Caraboa cup, none can rule out the possibility of his goal scoring return against visiting Brighton and Hove Albion who have sidelined Leon Balogun in their players list.
