Otti meets Tinubu on Kanu’s matter

Abia State Governor Alex Otti yesterday met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

There was no official statement on the purpose of the visit.

It is, however, believed to be part of ongoing engagements aimed at securing the release of convicted Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu.

The meeting came days after Otti visited Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, where the IPOB leader is serving his life sentence.

Otti undertook the Sokoto visit alongside Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel and Abia Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN).

“While Kanu is free to appeal his conviction, I’m happy to inform you that I have activated, and will continue to work on, the already agreed strategy until his freedom is secured,” Otti said after the visit.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 20 convicted Kanu on all the counts of the terrorism charges filed against him by the Federal Government.

He sentenced him to life imprisonment on counts 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 (terrorism-related offences), 20 years imprisonment (no fine option) on Count 3 (membership of a proscribed terrorist group), and five years imprisonment (no fine option) on Count 7 (unlawful importation of a radio transmitter to further Radio Biafra broadcasts).

The judge noted that although the Terrorism Prevention Act under which Kanu was convicted prescribes the death penalty, he chose not to impose it “as a Christian” and due to the growing unpopularity of the death sentence globally.

Nonetheless, he insisted that Kanu showed no remorse for his “atrocities”.

Prominent Igbo leaders, political officeholders and legal experts had renewed calls for a political resolution to the case.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, said despite Kanu’s conviction, a political solution to secure his release was still possible.

“It is now time to explore political solutions that had been hindered because the matter was before the court,” he said.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, stressed the need for collective engagement by Igbo leaders rather than emotional reactions.

“The most effective path toward resolution of this crisis is dialogue,” she said.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, called for unity and reconciliation while appealing to national leaders to intervene.

He said: “The Presidency, the Council of State and credible statesmen
should rise to the occasion for a lasting solution.”

  • Stakeholders hail Otti’s transformational leadership in Abia

Stakeholders hail Otti’s transformational leadership in Abia

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has continued to earn accolades from citizens, stakeholders, and development partners for what many describe as a new era of transparent, accountable, and reform-driven governance.

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Otti’s administration has implemented far-reaching reforms across infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, and economic development.

A Vision Rooted in Reform and Service

Governor Otti’s approach to governance has been defined by professionalism, data-driven policies, and transparency. A former banker, he has infused private-sector discipline into public administration, guided by his declared vision “to serve all Abians, not a few people.”

Upon taking office, Otti declared a state of emergency in critical sectors—roads, health, sanitation, and security—marking what observers have called a decisive break from the old order.

One of the hallmarks of Otti’s administration is its focus on infrastructure renewal. Over 140 roads have been constructed or rehabilitated across Abia, including rural link roads that connect previously isolated communities.

Major projects such as the expansion of Ossah Road in Umuahia into a six-lane Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard and ongoing upgrades in Aba reflect the administration’s determination to transform the state’s transport and commercial landscape.

Recognising that commerce depends on reliable power supply, Otti has also initiated key power sector interventions aimed at reducing infrastructural bottlenecks and stimulating economic activity.

“Our benchmark now is not just the kilometres built but the economic and social impact they deliver,” he said.

The Otti administration has made healthcare and education central pillars of its development strategy. Through the “Project Ekwueme” initiative, the government is rehabilitating primary healthcare centres across all 184 wards and upgrading tertiary health institutions, including the Abia State University Teaching Hospital.

In education, thousands of new teachers have been employed, while extensive school renovations are underway. The administration has also cleared years of unpaid salaries and pension arrears, restoring confidence and dignity among workers and retirees.

Governor Otti’s economic blueprint emphasizes entrepreneurship, industrialization, and a conducive business environment.

Aba, the commercial heartbeat of the South East, is being repositioned through infrastructure upgrades, tax reforms, and the establishment of the Abia Industrial and Innovation Park—designed to attract investors and promote economic diversification.

Reforms in the state’s revenue collection system have reduced burdens on traders while boosting internally generated revenue.

Abia has also attracted international development partners and donor agencies, a testament to growing investor confidence in the state’s governance model.

    Security and Good Governance

Through initiatives like “Operation Crush,” the state government has enhanced security and ensured greater safety for residents and businesses.

Otti’s administration has also institutionalised merit-based processes across the civil service, with prompt payment systems and transparent recruitment procedures.

Governor Otti’s leadership has drawn commendations from traditional rulers, civil society groups, and political observers.

Development partners have also renewed engagements with the state, citing its reform-minded governance and commitment to accountability.

Prof. Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr, Convener of the CountryFirst Movement, described Otti’s administration as “a model of good governance and responsible leadership.”

“Dr. Alex Otti’s performance is transforming Abia into a standard for excellence in public service,” he said, noting that the governor’s achievements reflect “what visionary, people-focused governance can deliver.”

  • I’ve nothing against Benjamin Kalu- Otti

I’ve nothing against Benjamin Kalu- Otti

Abia Governor Alex Otti has stated that he doesn’t hold any grudge against Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu over his (Kalu’s) recent statement about his (Otti’s) administration in the State.

Otti, who stated this while reacting to a question during the media chat with journalists at the Banquet Hall, Government, Umuahia, the state capital, however cautioned Kalu and other politicians to refrain from making statements that would heat up the state’s political space.

On Kalu’s allegation of not using the money that the State Government receives as monthly allocations from the Federal Government judiciously, Otti said “You will find out that this is the second time that he (Benjamin Kalu) has come out publicly to berate the administration and myself. I think that I want to forgive him.

“Do I feel threatened, absolutely No. but then, you know that people are different. I guessed that what happened is that, he was a bit terrified because he was there in Aba and saw what happened. He saw the organic show of love that Aba people showed and it also happened in Umuahia.

“I think that he has a few challenges; one of them is hubris and closely related to that challenge is Information Deficiency Syndrome where you are supposed to be in a place that you are supposed to have information, but you don’t have the real information.

“The first time that he did a video, early this year, I was asked here and I said that, I have no response. The only response that I gave was that I don’t have the anointing to speak about what will happen in 2027 by 2025 and I still maintain that I don’t have that anointing.

“I have a mandate and that mandate, runs till 2027. If someone can stand up and say that, this is what can happen in 2027, who am I to question him?

“But there a few things that I know; I know that power belongs to God. And I know that He gives it to who he wants. Those I can assure you that I know.

“And like I told them the other day in the church service, I also know about what is written in the Book of Lamentations; that we should not speak when the Lord has not spoken. I am saying this because we are all Christians.

“It will be sad for someone to come out and say that the State Government receives up to N38bn. Whatever that person said should be taken very seriously. Those who know better know that we receive just about half of that.

“For me, I think people should focus on the jobs that they have been given. I heard that he (Kalu) wants to run for governorship position in 2027; that is fine. It is his fundamental human right, nobody should stop him.

” But again, we must respect the law. If INEC releases the time table and say that, this is the time that campaigns start, if he starts campaigning before then, you put yourself in harm sway. He can even be disqualified before the election.

“He is campaigning by telling people that they are going to take over the state in 2027 and it is not right. If he wants to campaign, I will plead with him to hold his fire and wait. Once INEC blows the whistle, he can go and pick up the form and begin to campaign.

“It is for Abia people to decide who will be their Governor. It is also important that the APC that he s talking about which has leadership to know that they are being de-marketed in Abia State. But I will call on our people to still hold their peace and calm. We have managed in the last two years plus to keep the state peaceful and we should continue to maintain the peace.”

  • Court orders service of Otti’s N100b defamation suit on ex-commissioner

Court orders service of Otti’s N100b defamation suit on ex-commissioner

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has granted Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, permission to serve court processes in his N100 billion defamation suit against former Commissioner for Information, Hon. Eze Chikamnayo, through social media platforms — Facebook and WhatsApp.

Justice J.E. Obanor, in a ruling delivered on October 16, 2025, approved the governor’s application for substituted service, allowing the court bailiff to serve the writ of summons and other processes on Chikamnayo via his Facebook account, “Iyierioba Chikamnayo,” and his registered phone and WhatsApp number.

The case has been adjourned to January 19, 2026, for hearing.

In the motion ex parte filed by Otti’s counsel, Dr Sonny Ajala (SAN), the governor prayed the court to permit substituted service, citing the defendant’s previous use of the same channels to receive a solicitor’s demand letter.

The letter, dated October 2, 2025, had requested a retraction of several allegedly defamatory online publications.

The suit, filed on October 8, 2025 (Suit No. FCT/HC/CV/3921/2025) followed Chikamnayo’s alleged failure to honour the demand for a public apology and retraction of the posts.

Otti, through his counsel, is seeking a declaration that his reputation, goodwill, and standing as a person, husband, father, and political leader were gravely damaged by the defendant’s “persistent, false and malicious online publications” on Facebook.

The court documents referenced several Facebook posts made between July and September 2025, including posts captioned ‘Alex Otthief is a confirmed criminal and disaster’ (September 22, 2025), ‘Fighting Promax’ (September 21, 2025), ‘Old or New Abia?’ (September 14, 2025), ‘Sabbath Message’ (September 13, 2025), ‘Still on the matter’ (September 9, 2025), ‘Alex Otthief is a confirmed criminal and congenital liar = Looting Governor’ (August 15, 2025) and ‘Government of Alex Otthief for Zignature Bank = Ruin Abia’” (July 21, 2025).

Otti is seeking N100 billion in general damages for alleged loss of reputation, psychological distress, and emotional trauma caused by the publications. He is also asking the court to compel Chikamnayo to tender an unreserved apology for each of the posts, to be published on his Facebook page and in ThisDay, The Nation, The Punch and National Ambassador newspapers.

In addition, the governor is praying for a perpetual injunction restraining Chikamnayo from “writing, authoring, sharing, broadcasting, forwarding, or syndicating any content defamatory of the claimant” across all media platforms, including social media and traditional media outlets, and is demanding N250 million as the cost of prosecuting the suit.

Justice Obanor ordered that Chikamnayo must enter an appearance within 30 days of being served or risk judgment being entered against him in default.

In the earlier demand letter, Dr.Ajala stated that Governor Otti was “the only sitting governor in Nigeria bearing the name Alex Chioma Otti,” leaving no ambiguity about whom the online posts referred to, and described Chikamnayo’s publications as “false, malicious, and calculated to instigate public hatred.”

Ajala, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, noted that Otti’s “integrity has remained stainless” throughout his distinguished banking career, during which he rose to become Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Diamond Bank Plc before joining politics.

The letter accused Chikamnayo’s posts of causing “unquantifiable mental torture, depression, denigration, and brutal destruction of reputation built over the decades,” warning that failure to retract them within seven days would lead to legal action, a warning that has now resulted in court proceedings.

  • Those planning to rig Abia Gov poll should write wills- Alex Otti

Those planning to rig Abia Gov poll should write wills- Alex Otti

Abia Governor, Alex Otti, has warned those allegedly plotting to rig the 2027 governorship election in the state, telling them to “write their will” before attempting to subvert the people’s mandate.

Otti gave the warning on Thursday during his monthly media chat with journalists at the Government House in Umuahia, the state capital.

According to the Governor, intelligence reports suggest that some political figures are already meeting and strategising to “take over the state” through unlawful means ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I’ve heard that some people around him said if they must take over the state, they will write result,” Otti said. “The only advice I have for them is that if they truly want to write result, they should write something else before that time — you know what it is? Their will. Because this is our state, nobody can intimidate us.”

Governor Otti also warned politicians against engaging in early campaigns, stressing that such actions violate electoral laws.

“We must respect the law. If INEC releases the timetable and says this is the time that campaign starts, if you start campaigning before then, you put yourself in harm’s way — you can even be disqualified before the election,” he said.

The Governor further stated that any political gathering or public declaration of intention before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announces its timetable constitutes early campaigning.

“When you gather people and you’re telling them you’re going to take over the state in 2027, you’re campaigning. It is not right,” Otti cautioned.

Otti reaffirmed that the people of Abia State will have the final say in choosing their next governor through a free and fair process.

“If he wants to run an election, once INEC blows the whistle, he should go and pick up a form and begin to campaign. It’s for Abia people to decide who would be their Governor,” he added.

We’re building institutions that will outlast men, not strong men — Gov Otti

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building lasting institutions rather than depending on individual personalities.

Speaking during the Christ Embassy Miracle Crusade at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, the governor said his government’s focus is on establishing systems that will endure beyond any single administration.

“We are building institutions that will outlast men. When you build men, when the men go, you may return to square one. But here, we are building enduring institutions,” Otti stated.

While acknowledging human imperfection, he assured the large congregation that his government would not deliberately engage in wrongdoing.

“We are not perfect; we can make mistakes, but we are not arrogant. If we make a mistake and discover it, we will correct it and apologise. But I can assure you this is a government that will not deliberately make a mistake or do the wrong thing,” he said.

Governor Otti cited the recent recruitment of teachers in the state as an example of transparency and merit-based governance, noting that successful applicants were selected strictly on merit without paying any bribe or knowing anyone in government.

“That is the kind of institution we are building here. That you know somebody does not help,” he added.

He also revealed that the ongoing recruitment of 771 health workers had attracted applications from both Nigerians and foreigners, including individuals from Zambia and South Africa.

“Never again will we go back to those days where if you don’t know anybody, you don’t get anything,” Otti declared.

Addressing critics, the governor maintained that opposition was inevitable, stressing that even Jesus Christ faced attacks. He reminded the audience that as long as God is with them, no one can prevail against them.

Otti further urged Abians to support good leadership by actively participating in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

“Every society gets the kind of leadership it deserves. When you see good leadership, protect it. One of the ways to do so is by registering and voting during elections,” he said.

“Every Society gets the kind of leadership it deserves. And, if you get the kind of leadership you deserve, you have to protect it.

“How do you protect it? You must vote. The continuous voter registration exercise has started. Are you aware? Have you registered? Please, if you have not registered, go and register.

“It is your vote that God used in 2023 to bring us to power,” he added, saying that the more the children of God vote during elections, the less the likelihood of the wrong people emerging as leaders.

Governor Otti assured the people that nobody can intimidate them because Abia belongs to everyone, reminding those making noise about what they would do in 2027 that they are not God, whose power belongs to; only He knows what will happen tomorrow.

He thanked the Church for their continued support and prayers, even before he became Governor, appreciating, specially the men of God who toiled day and night, fasting and praying for God to bring a leadership that would change the story of Abia for good.

He told the cheering crowd that at the appointed time, God did it, saying that God’s time is the best as he encouraged the people to hold on to any vision they have and not give up when they encounter setbacks and discouragement.

Introducing Governor Otti, who was warmly received at the venue, Pastor Felix Ebuade, the Zonal Pastor of Christ Embassy, Aba Zone, said, “For years, I prayed for God to bring true development in Abia. Today, I can boldly say that God has answered our prayers, and he did so by giving us Governor Alex Otti.

Pastor Ebuade, assisted by other men of God in the arena, including the founder of Glorious Life Gospel Centre (GLGC), Archbishop (Dr.) Goddy Okafor, offered fervent prayer for the Governor, his administration, and the State.

APC chieftain to Otti: Stop grandstanding with Kanu’s name

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Abia, Prince Paul Ikonne has challenged the Governor of Abia State, Mr. Alex Otti, to stop exploiting the appeal for Mazi Nnamdi Kalu’s freedom for personal and political gains.

He said the recent pronouncement by the governor on the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) was nothing but a desperate political grandstanding, aimed at seeking attention.

The former Director General of National Agricultural Land Development Authority accused the governor of leaving the substance for the shadows, insisting that Otti should concentrate on providing good, transparent and accountable governance to the people of Abia State.

Addressing a large gathering of Ukwa la Ngwa youths who paid him a courtesy visit, Ikonne expressed deep concern that Governor Otti appeared to have continued to use sensitive national issues to distract Abians from his growing record of underperformance and questionable financial practices.

In a statement released Saturday in Abuja by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Ujo Justice, the APC Chieftain said: “It is unfortunate that rather than giving Abians a transparent account of how public funds are being utilised, Governor Otti has chosen to play politics with the emotions of the people by dragging the name of Nnamdi Kanu into his failing government narrative.

“For more than two years in office, Governor Otti never paid a visit, never made a concrete intervention, and never demonstrated any concern about Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s situation. Now that his government’s credibility is collapsing, he suddenly remembers Kanu. That is hypocrisy at its peak,” Ikonne said.

He emphasised that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will regain his freedom without Alex Otti’s political grandstanding, and urged the governor to stop exploiting the issue for personal and political advantage.

“Let me thank my friend and brother Hon. Obi Aguoch and Hon. Ichita for their efforts towards the freedom of Mazi Nnamdi which I believe will bring good results very soon.”

Otti grants automatic employment to nine corps members in Abia

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has offered automatic employment in the state’s civil service to nine ex-corps members of Abia origin who recently received Presidential Honour Awards of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Governor Otti made the announcement while receiving six of the awardees in his office, led by the NYSC State Coordinator, Gladys Adama. He directed the State Head of Service, Benson Ojiekere, to issue them appointment letters immediately.

“On behalf of the state government, you are going to leave here with a token. But beyond that, I hereby temporarily lift the embargo on employment to employ the nine of you, except if any of you is not interested. Once you complete your documentation, you can start work on Monday,” Otti said.

He praised the ex-corps members for their outstanding performance during their service year, which earned them national recognition, urging them to remain exemplary in all their endeavours.

The governor also commended the NYSC State Coordinator for her efforts and for presenting the outstanding honourees to him.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Mr. Nwogu Chinomso from Obingwa LGA thanked Governor Otti for the recognition and pledged their commitment to serving Abia State with dedication.

“I want to sincerely express our heartfelt gratitude to you, Your Excellency, for the recognition and encouragement you have given to us.”

“Also, let me use this opportunity to commend your good work in the State. Your Excellency, you are a true leader. You are the Joshua of our time. Our prayer is that the Almighty God will continue to give you the wisdom to pilot the affairs of this State in Jesus name. Amen,” he declared.

Earlier, while presenting the Ex-Corp members, the NYSC State Coordinator, Barr. Gladys Adama said that the Nine Ex-Corp members made the State proud during their service year and were decorated by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the 29th of July this year.

“I have come with these persons who have done Abia proud. Out of about a hundred and something, Your Excellency, Abia came first with nine of these champions.

“They excelled themselves in their various places of primary assignment. As you have been told, Your Excellency, none of them served in Abia State. In fact, only one of them served in the east while others served in faraway North.

The Ex-Corp members who were granted automatic employment include Nwogu Chinonso, AnyanwỄ Promise, Ezieme Francis Uba, Emmanuel Ogbenyealu Ezinne, Abia Chinwendu Grace, Nwafike Esther Chiemela, Dr. Ugwa Obinna Mark, Eke Lawrence Miracle, and James Raphael Chukwuebuka.

The reception was witnessed by senior Government appointees.

Otti provides medical college with 500KVA transformer

The Abia State Governor and Visitor to Abia State University (ABSU), Dr  Alex Otti, has demonstrated his resolve to revitalise the  institution by providing a 500KVA transformer to the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), Aba campus.

This development marks the end of a decade-long struggle with unreliable power supply at the college, which had relied solely on generators for its round-the-clock academic and clinical operations.

The Provost,  Prof. Chucks Israel Kamanu, described the intervention as a game-changer.

“For the past 10 years, the entire college has been running on generators. You can imagine what that means for a medical programme that operates 24/7. Graciously, the governor has provided a 500KVA transformer, now fully energised, and for the first time in a decade, we are enjoying steady public power supply,” he said.

He noted that the  governor also facilitated the provision of a solar-powered borehole, mounted on a reinforced tank stand, to ensure uninterrupted water supply for students and staff, easing  daily life on campus and enhancing greater focus on academics.

“In a broader move to upgrade the institution’s facilities, Governor Otti has commenced the construction of a modern Teaching Hospital Complex, alongside retrofitting the existing 40-year-old structure currently in use. When completed, the new complex will give the Teaching Hospital a facelift, improve healthcare delivery, and significantly enhance the training of future doctors,” the Provost added.

On staffing and welfare, he confirmed  his approval for the recruitment of additional manpower and lauded the prompt clearing of salary arrears, as well as consistent monthly salary payments.

Kamanu described Otti’s  intervention as both divine and timely, noting that before he assumed office, the college had lost accreditation due to years of neglect. “Within a few months, he released funds, gave marching orders, and ensured the College met the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) requirements. The result was not just a five-year reaccreditation but also an increase in our admission quota from 120 to 150 students,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor of ABSU, Prof. Ndukwe Okeudo,  thanked the  governor and assured that with the ongoing support, the Medical School would continue to produce highly skilled doctors and excel in research and academics.

  • ’Ikonne lacks moral right to criticise Otti’

’Ikonne lacks moral right to criticise Otti’

Former Adviser on Housing to Abia State, Nwabueze Onwuneme, has told a former Commissioner for Lands and Urban Planning, Paul Ikonne, to desist from “cheap and selfish criticism of Governor Alex Otti.”

Onwuneme said Ikonne has no moral right to criticise Otti, who he described as an action governor and the best thing to happen to Aba, Ikonne’s community and to Abia State.

In an article: ‘N54b for Schools: Budgets are estimates, expenditures are facts,’ Ikonne, a chieftain of All Progressive Congress, through his Chief Press Secretary, Ujo Justice, said Otti should “provide evidence of the schools renovated under the huge expenditure.”

Reacting to the criticism, Onwuneme, a youth and good governance advocate, noted importance of putting governors and other leaders under checks through genuine demand for accountability.

He, however, said such role should be left to people with the moral right to do so.

”Take the case of Prince Paul Ikonne currently playing to the gallery by criticising the governor over a government project across Abia State.

”I think he, Ikonne, has no moral standing for this criticism of Governor Otti.”

Onwuneme recalled that in 2008, he as special adviser to the then governor on Housing had arranged for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Digital Mapping of Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia, between the state and United Nations Habitat, led by the then Nigerian Programme Manager, Prof Johnson Falade.

He blamed Ikonne, who was then commissioner for Lands and Urban Planning, for the signing not happening.

He claimed that Ikonne insisted he was not carried along.

Onwuneme said: “The MoU was designed to project the physical development of Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia, all in Abia State, for the next 20 years.

”As part of the package for Abia, the UN Habitat was to help, not just to carry out the master and structural plan, and digital mapping but also to help get funding and expertise from partner bodies for the developmental projects that will be offshoots of the plans.

”As we know, such offshoots include quality roads, bridges, power infrastructure, etc.

”But I recall that at the point of signing, he, Ikonne, ‘the Prince of Aba,’ called me…”

He said Ikonne allegedly rejected the signing “simply because he was not carried along during the arrangements.”

‎Onwuneme said Ikonne was therefore not in a position to criticise a performing governor.

‎“My advise to the former commissioner is that as a Prince of Aba, he should be careful over his unwarranted attacks on Governor Alex Otti, so that Aba people, when they come to know the truth, will not attack him or denounce him as a leader,” Onwuneme added.
