Abia vows to ensure hospital doesn’t lose accreditation

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has said his administration will ensure facilities and infrastructure are put in place to make sure Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba

does not lose accreditation during the coming accreditation.

Dr. Otti, who addressed executive members of Abia State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), who were on a working visit to him, said the government would partner the association to put things in place and ensure graduates of the institution were equipped with requisite  training to compete with their contemporaries across the globe.

He said:  “We will do everything possible to support you for the place to function properly. We will partner you to address challenges facing the institution and tidy them up before the visitation panel comes for accreditation.”

Governor Otti added: “You remember a few months before accreditation was withdrawn, I had written to the then governor to warn of the impending de-accreditation, which they responded to with a nonchalant attitude and which later resulted in the eventual withdrawal of accreditation.”

Describing payment of salary as a basic responsibility of the government, he said his administration was instituting worker-friendly policies and welfare packages that would discourage brain drain prevailing among doctors across Nigeria.

Otti, noting that his administration was prioritising health care service as evident in the ongoing renovation and equipping of three of the 15 general hospitals and select health centres among the 192 health centres in the 17 local governments, said he was committed to achieving minimum standard in the health care facilities of the government.

He added that government was working with international health care agencies to standardise and improve health care services.

The governor lauded the NMA for its planned free medical outreach in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government, saying the gesture would complement the ongoing free medical exercise being carried out by his administration across the three senatorial zones, which he said would last till December.

He used the forum to announce that he would soon inaugurate an eye clinic in Umuahia, which had been fixed by his administration.

He described human life as very important, saying the ongoing turnaround in the health sector was to make health facilities function optimally.

He promised to support the forthcoming Physicians’ Week to be hosted by Abia State between October 22 and 28 and approved their request for them to use the International Conference Centre, Umuahia as venue for the opening programme of the Physicians’ Week.

The state Chairman of NMA, Dr. Isaiah Abali, thanked Governor Otti for regularising salaries of doctors in addition to abolishing the dichotomy among Abia civil servants.

  • I’m still in Abia gov race, says Alex Otti

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has debunked rumours making rounds that he has withdrawn from the race.

There were unconfirmed reports that Otti and Dr. Uche Ogah, gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had met in Umuahia South Local Government Area at the home of one of the chieftains of the APC for a possible coalition ahead of the Saturday March, 9 governorship election against incumbent Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, which ended in deadlock.

It was gathered the meeting had barely ended when rumours started flying around in the state that Otti had agreed to step down for Ogah.

But Otti in a release on Monday through Kazie Uko, Director, Media and Publicity Alex Otti Campaign Organisation debunked the claims, stressing he is still in the race, adding that he hasn’t stepped down for anybody.

Part of the release reads “…Consequently, the Alex Otti Campaign Organisation hereby states unequivocally that the reports by an online media blog that Dr. Alex Otti has stepped down for the APC candidate, Uche Ogah, is false and deliberate attempt by desperate politicians to demoralise and confuse the Abia electorates.                                                                                                                                                                                                          “The Alex Otti Campaign Organisation urges Ndi Abia to remain focused in our resolve to vote Dr. Otti, on Saturday, March 9, 2019 thereby enthroning credible leadership at the government house in Abia State and not be distracted by false rumours by rejected and hopeless politicians and their collaborators in the fake media.

“Just on Friday, March 1, 2019 the Accord Party governorship candidate, Barr. Emeka Uwakolam, led his deputy and teeming number of his party members to the Alex Otti Campaign Organisation where he formally stepped down for Dr. Otti, declaring that the APGA candidate stands tall above all the other candidates in the race.

“Whereas this elicited excitement and hope across the political skyline of Abia State, it must have obviously sent shock waves across the camps of the opposition APC and the PDP, prompting the resort to fake news and propaganda by enemies of Abia State.

“Abia people should be rest assured that Dr. Alex Otti is determined to win the March 9, 2019 election on the platform of APGA and will not trade that for anything. Just like we did in 2015, APGA will win the 2019 election, this time with even wider margin.

“We urge Ndi Abia to remain vigilant and not allow anybody to pull wool over our eyes as we conclude the journey to reclaim our dear state next Saturday, from the hands of marauders who have plundered the state for past 20 years.”

  • Ikpeazu lacks capacity to lead, says Alex Otti

THE governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has said that he does not have any personal problem with the incumbent governor of the state, Okezie Ikpeazu, “apart from the fact that the governor lacks the capacity to govern the state.”

Otti, who said he was propelled by love in his quest to rescue Abia State, told a large crowd of charged Abia youths who gathered in Umuahia during the week, to celebrate the Valentine’s Day with him and his wife, at an event, “Valentine with Alex and Priscilla”, that Ikpeazu was a product of godfatherism and therefore malleable and susceptible to manipulation.

He said that Governor Ikpeazu with his limited capacity, coupled with the overbearing influence of his godfather, Senator T. A. Orji, had done the best he could for Abia State and unfortunately his best was not good enough and therefore did not have any need to aspire to lead the state for a second term.

According to Dr. Otti, “We do not have any problem with him as a person, but we have problem with his ideas. We have problem with his vision or lack thereof. We have problems with his leadership quality, again, or lack thereof. He has done his best. Our verdict, as Abia people, is that his best is not good enough,” he said.

A statement by the Director, Media and Publicity of Alex Otti Campaign Organisation, Kazie Uko, quoted the APGA governorship candidate as saying that Abia State was blessed with many smart and intelligent people who are also good and hardworking, but unfortunately, “all of us collectively allowed evil to thrive in the state, by what we did or what we didn’t do.”

Otti further explained: “Go back to 1999; that was when we got it wrong and once the fundamentals are wrong everything else would not be right. So, we allowed people who had no vision to take over the governorship and governance of our state and when they finished, they installed their godsons”.

He admonished the youth on the danger of standing aloof or sitting on the fence and not getting involved in politics. “I’m sensitizing you this afternoon to get interested in politics. Don’t be an apolitical animal because man is a political animal.

Apart from the intellectually rewarding political talk, the ‘Valentine with Alex and Priscilla’ was highly entertaining and exhilarating. It was laced with songs by a choral group, music, comedy, sumptuous food and drinks. It provided opportunity for the youth to meet and interact with the prospective governor in relaxed and cozy atmosphere, devoid of any kind of tension.

  • 2019: Abia guber candidates sign peace accord

The governorship candidates of the three major political parties; Dr. Alex Otti of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Uche Ogah of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the incumbent Governor of the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, including Blessing Nwagba of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have signed a peace accord agreement.

The peace accord deal, The Nation gathered was to ensure that there was a violent-free 2019 election on Saturday February 16 and March 2 respectively in the state as the parties square up against each other.

The event which was organised by Hope Givers Initiative; a civil society organisation, in collaboration with Vision Africa radio station and the Abia State branch of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was witnessed by the clergy, Abia INEC Resident Commissioner; Joseph Iloh, Abia Commissioner of Police; Eden Okon and governorship candidates of various parties.

The President of Vision Africa Radio, Bishop Sunday Onuoha of Methodist Church reminded the main actors the need to have the interest of the state at heart while they push to convince Abian electorate to vote and give them the opportunity to govern the state.

Onuoha said signing the peace accord was to ensure that the governorship candidates and other elective position seekers including their supporters were ready to accept the outcome of the elections.

Joseph Iloh, the INEC Resident Commissioner who said that the importance of the peace accord cannot be overemphasized said there was the need to sustain the prevailing peace in the state before, during and after the polls which required the full cooperation of all the candidates and their supporters.

Iloh assured that the commission would provide a level, playing field for all the political parties and their candidates.

On his own part, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Eden Okon disclosed that the command has put necessary measures in place to ensure that there was adequate security in the state during and after the polls.

The Police Commissioner who was represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Godwin Akoh, said, “We have enough security on ground. Nobody should be afraid or feel threatened, because police are ready and prepared to protect Nigerians during the elections.’’

In their separate speeches, the guber candidates among others expressed their readiness to abide by the content of the peace accord during the polls.

According to Gov. Okezie  Ikpeazu said, “It is my desire and sincere wish that no single blood will be spilled during this election.

“I have express faith in the Prof. Yakubu-led INEC and the capacity of our REC to do the needful to ensure that nobody was allowed to do away with the result sheet.’’

While Ogah of the APC said he had the interest of the people of Abia at heart and would continue to contribute to the growth of the state.

“I am a man who stands for peace. We will ensure that the activities of my supporters are governed by peace.”

Otti also, spoke in a similar vein, saying that he believed in peace and would do everything within his power to maintain peace and unity in Abia.

“I call on my fellow candidates that have appended their signature to be honest to execute what we have signed.”

  • I am still the authentic APGA chairman – Ehiemere

Rev.  Augustine Ehiemere has said despite the recent falsehood and malicious propaganda going on against the leadership of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia State, and against Dr. Alex Otti, its governorship candidate, he remains the authentic congress state chairman of APGA.

Speaking in Aba, Ehiemere recalled that in 2014, when the national leadership of the party suspended Prince Nnanna Ukaegbu as the state chairman of the party over party issues, that Ukaegbu went to court to challenge the action but later abandoned the case.

According to him, Ukaegbu went to court that time, he did not succeed and that matter was left for about three years until the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) planted some agents to come and destabilize APGA in the state.

Ehiemere said the matter that was left for three years was brought back in 2018 and judgment hurriedly given by a vacation judge in the state in favour of Ukaegbu.

Ehiemere said they have gone to file a stay of execution and an appeal at the Court of Appeal and urged all Abians to disregard the propaganda making the round that he is no more the state chairman of APGA.

“We’ve gone to file an appeal against that ruling and stay of execution pending the determination of this matter at the court of appeal.

“That is the true position, but they have gone out to tell Abians all sorts of lies, so let the people disregard all these falsehood and propaganda that I am no more the chairman of the party in the state.

“The national chairman of the party, Dr. Ike Oye was contacted and he said Ehiemere is the state chairman of APGA in Abia state. If I’m not the state chairman, why was I elected as IPAC state chairman irrespective of their opposition?

“If I’m not the state chairman, they secured their ruling in on September 25, 2018 and by October 2, all national officers who came to Abia to conduct primaries, all reported to me and I signed all the documents and on October 7, all state chairmen of the party were invited to Abuja for non elective convention where we unveiled our presidential candidate”.

Ehiemere said all these have showed that his opponents are merely peddling false news, stressing that he still remains the authentic state chairman of the party and expressed optimism his party will win the election in 2019.

Reacting, Ukaegbu said the court has made pronouncement on who the state chairman of APGA is and that it is when that order is vacated that somebody else could claim chairmanship of the party in the state.

He said that Ehiemere has filed a motion asking the court to resend its decision which is yet to be heard and as such should not make any contrary claim.

  • Abia: Alex Otti vows to defeat PDP government in 2019

The governorship candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), for 2019 general elections in Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, on Tuesday appealed to his co-contestants for the ticket to join forces with him in order to collectively defeat the PDP led government come February 2019.

Otti, who made the appeal while receiving the party’s certificate of return from its National Chairman, Dr. Victor Oye at the APGA national secretariat in Abuja, urged them to bury their grievances in the interest of growth of the party.

Speaking at the occasion attended by the National Working Committee, NWC, and candidates under the party, Otti said: “Let me appeal to everyone who participated in this process to understand that it is the wish of God that happened.

“I would like to use this opportunity to welcome them and appeal to them to join forcers with us to ensure that we get to that place that God has destined for us.

“Yes, it is not unexpected that when people go into a contest, and lose out there will be bitter and sometimes hurt, but we must also realise that in a contest that it is only one person that wins. And because one person has won does not mean that others that participated did not do well.

“If you did not win today, tomorrow is another day. But if you destroy the platform and the structure that will deliver you, then tomorrow may not come.

“So, I’m using this opportunity to first of all apologise to everybody at every level, from contestants at the House of Assembly in different states under the platform of APGA, to the gubernatorial  and senatorial aspirants who did not make it to become candidates of the party, let them sheath their swords  and know that it was a brotherly contest.

“That if we put our house together, that we will get to that promise land, and tomorrow is another day. So if anybody is hurt, let me apologise on behalf of the party, on behalf of the candidates that emerged and on behalf of all of us. We need to reunite the house.  I’m committed to everything possible to ensure that we have a united party.

“Let me also say this is just the beginning because the main battle ahead is just out there.  What we have gone through is just internal contest, so, the enemy is out and not in.  So, we must do everything possible to ensure that we all work together. “

On expectations from him coming to contest for second time under APGA, he said, “I think we need to put the question in perspective, the first is that yes, I have contested before. So, asking for one new thing I will do, I have not done the whole thing that I thought I will do.

“So, the things I will do have just increased because of the bad governance in the last three years and half.  So, the whole things that I said I will do and the new ones that I will do; and I will just summarise them.

“Again, the next one is to let you know that the people did give me their mandate in 2015. And what happened was it was stolen brazenly. And because they have done nothing, with the stolen property, I’m sure that the people will be more than determined to give me much more than they gave me in 2015.

“What do I intend to? Abia State is a state that is blessed with resources both human and material, but because of the operating environment that the people have found themselves, in the last twenty years, they have not been able to make very effective use of al the resources that we are blessed with.

“So, what I intend to bring is the right environment for people to use efficiently and effectively the resources that they have. What I mean by that; if you go to Abia State today, it is arguably one of the worst states in Nigeria today in terms of infrastructural development.

“That has been over time. You don’t blame this present government alone. It has been like in the last twenty years.

“But I think the present government has exacerbated the challenges that they met.  And they have also made a little fool of themselves by going to the media with so much of propaganda about work that have not been done forgotten that people live in the state and they know. They have first hand experience of how they live.

“So, I intent to bring most importantly, infrastructural development because if you go to Aba and most part of Umuahia today, everywhere look like a refuse dump. But I don’t think it is too much to government to commit to cleaning the environment.”

Otti, also promised to turn around the state of roads, healthcare delivery in the state, which according to him are currently virtually not in existence in Abia state if voted into power as executive governor of Abia state.

  • Otti accuses PDP of re-introducing thuggery in Abia politics

The 2019 All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Abia governorship aspirant, Dr. Alex Otti has accused the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of re-introducing thuggery and violence in the state ahead of the 2019 election.

In a release titled “Abia State Government’s Sponsored Terror Attack on APGA and Alex Otti: Putting Abians on Notice” and endorsed by his media aide, Ferdinand Ekeoma Otti was quoted to have said that he was compelled to write and officially inform Abians and the country in general of a barbaric and life threatening incident that took place on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at Obingwa LGA.

The release read in part, “Dr. Otti considers this unprovoked attack as very dangerous and grievous, and thus notifies as follows:

“That the Obingwa chapter of APGA had informed the state leadership of the party, and it’s governorship aspirant, Dr. Otti of the willingness of some former members of other political parties and intending new members to declare officially for APGA at a rally organized by the party on the said date, at the premises of the National Institute of Nigerian Languages (NILAN) formerly Federal School of Arts and Science, Umuokahia, located at Obingwa LGA of the state.

“That on arrival at the venue early in the morning of the day, the leaders of APGA discovered that the venue had been locked. Given that the venue had been paid for and police clearance secured for the event, the leaders engaged the school security men who were surprised that the gate had been locked. Minutes later, the LGA Chairman, Mr. Hanson Amaechi emerged from across the gate, accompanied by several thugs.

He emphatically stated that he was under instruction from the Abia State government to ensure that the rally did not hold and would therefore not unlock the gate. At this point a senior officer of the school came out to confirm that the school had been paid for the venue and the APGA should be allowed access to the premises. The thugs with the LG Chairman threatened the gentleman who left the area out of fear.

“All the pleading from the APGA leaders fell on deaf ears as the Chairman insisted that the gathering would not hold. He and his thugs subsequently started making open threats, vowing that nothing would make Alex Otti and APGA hold any political activity in Obingwa; because it is the LGA of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

“To prove their threats after long verbal altercations and engagements, the thugs began hauling stones, bottles and other dangerous objects at APGA and Otti’s supporters. This caused confusion as many people, especially women, scampered for safety. The climax of the attack was when they drove off a bulldozer packed by the side of the road, and sped towards the direction of our people; with the intent of crushing them and their vehicles”.

Otti said the purpose of the release was neither to draw public sympathy nor to appeal to emotions, rather to update Abians, put them on notice and properly situate record of events even as 2019 draws closer.

While informing that APGA and her supporters shall be going back to Obingwa in the next few days to host the event, Otti appealed to parents and guardians to caution their children and wards who he said were being given peanuts and sent on suicide mission, which political thuggery represents

Reacting, Ikechukwu Iroha, a media aide to the governor in a statement absolved the local government chairman of any complicity. He said the altercation and the fracas that ensued was between the Otti and Chief Chikwe Udensi factions of APGA and that the local government chairman only came in to ensure peace in the area.

When our reporter contacted Chief Udensi who is also a governorship aspirant in the 2019 election, he denied any involvement of his supporters in the incident, insisting that APGA is one family and could not have engaged each other in any physical attack.

He warned that should the violence against members of APGA in the state continues, the party would be force to devise any lawful means to protect its members.

“Ikpeazu should call his boys to order. I thought that he is a refined politician. There is no way I or members of my group would engage in a physical fight with my brother, Alex Otti. Call Otti’s DG; Max Nduaguibe and ask him who the people that stopped them from using NINLAN, a federal government facility that they have paid to use for their event where? The people that did that are not and can never be my supporters.”

  • Abia received over N160b since May 2015 – Otti

Abia received over N160b since May 2015 – Otti

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in Abia State, Alex Otti, on Wednesday asked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to explain how he spent over N160 billion received between May 2015 and last month.

Otti stated this in a rejoinder to two statements issued by the state government in reaction to his allegation of financial misappropriation against Governor Ikpeazu.

The APGA candidate, who said he would not join Ikpeazu in the mud, told the governor to explain why salaries have not been paid despite all the money accrued the state.

He said Abia State got N120 billion from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) between May 2015 and last month, adding that the state got a N10 billion loan from a commercial bank, N14.105 billion bailout fund, as well as N10.6 billion and N5.7 billion first and second Paris Club Refund funds respectively.

Otti said: “On the issue of funds that have accrued to the state and how they were utilized, information available from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation indicate that you received N25.59 billion and N15.42 billion between May to December 2015.

“From January to December 2016, Abia State received N30.56 billion and N19.61 billion. You got N18.28 billion and N11.91 billion between January and July, 2017. The total money received by Abia State from the OAGF is N74.42 billion and N46.94 billion, which equals N120 billion.

“In addition to the above funds, you had borrowed N10billion from an old generation bank and had also received the following funds: Bail out N14.105billion, first tranche of Paris Club Refund N10.6 billion and second tranche of Paris Club Refund N5.7 billion.

“By your own admission, you collect N1billion monthly on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). You will agree with me that these are huge sums of money. I do know that it also costs money to run government and part of government expenditure goes to payment of salaries. I do not think it is too much to ask, if a citizen demands to know how these funds were utilized.

“On salaries, I will advise that you come clean and let us know why salaries are not being paid in spite of all the funds received as itemized above. It is no use making claims that are not true like the ones made in your responses to me to the effect that you have paid all outstanding salary arrears.

“Those who are owed are there in the state and I consider it a great disservice to them and the state when their governor makes untruthful claims about salary payments.

“Besides, the world is now a global village and there are credible sources including ‘Budgit’ that publish states that are in arrears of salary payments. You may wish to ask for the latest edition of such publications and see if our state is listed amongst those that are not owing.

“On your claims of commissioning 26 roads and constructing 65 others, I will advise that you give Abia people real roads. All those roads built and commissioned by propaganda on the state radio and sponsored social media platforms can only remain what they are: a mirage, when many parts of Aba and Umuahia remain in ruins and impassable. You can travel very far with propaganda, but it can never take you to a real destination, except if your destination is imaginary.”

  • Otti to EFCC: Probe past Abia governments

Otti to EFCC: Probe past Abia governments

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in Abia State, Alex Otti, on Wednesday urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other anti-graft agencies to probe past and present governments in the state to unravel the “disappearance of billions of naira accrued to the state.”

Otti stated this at a press conference held in Victoria Island, Lagos, where he condemned the National Assembly’s approval of $200 million African Development Bank (AfDB) loan for the state.

According to Otti, the administration of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has left many Abia workers miserable because they were owed eight months’ salary arrears despite several billions of Naira that have accrued to the state.

Specifically mentioning the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the APGA chieftain said the anti-graft agencies should beam their searchlight on Abia and commence urgent investigation in order to unravel the mystery why the state has remained in ruins despite all the money it has garnered from allocations, Internally Generated Revenues (IGR), bailouts and loans.

He said: “There is absolutely no doubt that the Ikpeazu/PDP led government does not mean well for Abia State and its people as the consistency of negativity of the government, especially in the management of the people’s commonwealth has assumed a provocative and insulting dimension, hence the need for all men of good conscience to collectively raise their voices in saving the state by calling Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and his collaborators to order so that they don’t plunge Abia and Abians into long term financial and economic chaos.

“I demand that the National Assembly should review its decision taken few weeks ago and quickly withdraw or reverse its approval of the $200 million loan, as any money given to the Abia State government by the issuing body is bound to disappear going by its crazy record of financial recklessness. Besides, the capacity to repay this humongous loan has not been demonstrated in any way or form, irrespective of the outdated document titled: ‘Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development Project’ dated October 2015, which was the only document placed in front of the Assembly for the loan.

He said the government should tell Abians where the billions given to it so far for the development of the state have gone to, adding that the state House of Assembly should without delay, set up a panel to investigate the financial activities of the Ikpeazu led government and ensure that anyone found culpable in the obvious financial crimes halting the development of the state is made to pay the price.
