FULL LIST: Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, others top African countries with strongest naval fleet in 2026

African naval capabilities often receive less scrutiny than land and air forces, yet maritime power across the continent is steadily advancing. With thousands of kilometres of coastline and sea lanes critical to global commerce, coastal states have expanded their fleets to defend territorial waters, protect offshore assets and curb piracy.

From the Mediterranean corridor to the Gulf of Guinea, naval forces are playing a growing role in strengthening maritime security and underpinning economic stability. Governments have invested in platforms and surveillance systems aimed at securing borders and safeguarding natural resources.

Modern African navies now extend beyond conventional defence roles. They support trade protection, conduct sea patrols, escort commercial vessels and participate in multinational exercises that foster regional cooperation and peacekeeping.

Global Firepower’s 2026 naval assessment indicates that several African countries operate increasingly capable fleets, including submarines, offshore patrol vessels and advanced monitoring systems configured for both combat readiness and search-and-rescue operations.

Here are the top 10 African countries with the strongest naval fleets in 2026:

    1. Nigeria – 152 naval vessels (22nd globally)

    2. Egypt – 149 naval vessels (23rd globally)

    3. Algeria – 111 naval vessels (34th globally)

    4. Morocco – 100 naval vessels (38th globally)

    5. South Africa – 63 naval vessels (52nd globally)

CAF opens disciplinary probe over aftermath of Nigeria’s victory over Algeria

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched a disciplinary investigation following violent scenes that erupted after Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Marrakech.

Although Nigeria sealed qualification for the semi-finals, the aftermath of the encounter descended into chaos on the pitch and in surrounding areas of the stadium.

At full-time, several Algerian players confronted referee Issa Sy and his assistants over disputed decisions, surrounding the officiating crew in a heated standoff.

Security officials were forced to intervene to prevent the situation from escalating into physical confrontation between the two teams.

The tension spilled into the stands, where visibly frustrated supporters of Algeria reportedly attempted to breach security barriers and vandalised parts of the stadium before stewards managed to restore order.

More troubling incidents were reported in the mixed zone reserved for journalists. According to multiple accounts, some Algerian reporters allegedly verbally and physically assaulted Moroccan journalists, raising serious concerns about safety in restricted and controlled media areas.

CAF, speaking through reports cited by Africa Soccer, confirmed it has begun reviewing official submissions from match officials, security personnel, and media representatives involved in the incident.

Disciplinary measures are expected in the coming days, with the outcome likely to serve as a major test of CAF’s commitment to maintaining discipline, protecting participants, and preserving the integrity of the continent’s premier football tournament.

FULL LIST: Starting XI of Super Eagles vs Algeria

The starting line-up of the Nigeria remains unchanged for their quarter-final clash against Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has retained the same side that delivered a commanding 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16, showing confidence in a team that has impressed throughout the tournament.

In attack, Ademola Lookman the tournament’s second-highest goalscorer and leading assist provider will once again partner Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams. The prolific front three have combined for nine goals so far in the competition.

Osimhen keeps his place in the line-up despite the controversy surrounding his emotional outburst during the previous match, where he appeared to clash with teammates and refused to huddle after the final whistle. The incident sparked calls from sections of the Nigerian football community for his omission, but Chelle has opted for continuity.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi will anchor the midfield alongside Frank Onyeka, providing balance and protection for playmaker Alex Iwobi. At the back, Calvin Bassey, who is one yellow card away from suspension, marshals the defence in a familiar 4-3-3 setup.

The quarter-final encounter will kick off at 5pm Nigerian time at the Grand Stade de Marrakech. The winner will advance to face hosts Morocco in the semi-finals.

Stanley Nwabali; Bright Osayi-Samuel, Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Bruno Onyeamaechi; Wilfred Ndidi (C), Frank Onyeka, Alex Iwobi; Ademola Lookman, Akor Adams, Victor Osimhen.

Algeria apologise after player mocks Congolese super fan

Algeria‘s football federation has apologised to a Congolese super fan who has become one of the stars of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) being held in Morocco.

Michel Nkuka Mboladinga has supported the Democratic Republic of Congo by dressing up as the country’s revered first leader Patrice Lumumba and remaining stock-still throughout every match.

He stood on a pedestal with his right arm raised – just like Lumumba’s famous statue in DR Congo’s capital, Kinshasa – as fans around him cheered.

But after Algeria beat the Leopards on Tuesday, Algerian player Mohamed Amine Amoura faced a backlash for mimicking Mboladinga and falling to the ground as though the statue had been knocked over.

This prompted the 25-year-old forward to post an apology on Instagram, saying his gesture was not intended to disrespect DR Congo.

The Desert Foxes had looked like they were heading to penalties before Adil Boulbina scored in the 119th minute, securing a place in the quarter-finals where they face Nigeria on Saturday.

“At that moment, I wasn’t aware of what the person or symbol in the stands represented. I simply wanted to joke around, in a good-natured way, without any ill intent or desire to provoke anyone,” said Amoura, who also plays for German team Wolfsburg.

Lumumba is not only seen as a hero in DR Congo, where he was assassinated in 1961 in a plot backed by Belgium, the UK and the US, but is also regarded as one of the most prominent voices in Africa’s anti-colonial movement.

Michel Nkuka Mboladinga dressed as Patrice Lumumba in a blue suit jacket and red trousers with his hand raised in the middle of Congolese fans in a stadium in Rabat.

After the final whistle on Tuesday at Rabat’s Moulay Hassan Stadium, which saw the Leopards knocked out of the tournament, Mboladinga – who with his hairstyle and glasses looks remarkably like Lumumba – was visibly distraught.

He removed his glasses to wipe away some tears, slowly got down from his makeshift plinth and leant against it with his head in his hands.

The Algerian Football Association (FAF) reached out to Mboladinga following Amoura’s contrite statement and invited him to the hotel where the North African team are staying in Rabat to meet the players.

The super fan was not able to get to Morocco’s capital so FAF’s media officer Saïd Fellak travelled to Casablanca’s Novotel Hotel to see him and other Congolese supporters on Wednesday evening.

There Fellak presented Mboladinga with his own Desert Foxes jersey with the name “Lumumba” printed on the back.

Videos and photos of the entente cordiale, also attended by Congolese Sports Minister Didier Budimbu, were captured by Congolese fans, showing Mboladinga next to Fellak with his new football shirt.

Ebenezer Akinsanmiro was absent as the Super Eagles began preparations for their Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final showdown against Algeria.

BREAKING: Super Eagles boycott Marrakech trip for Algeria game over unpaid bonuses

Players and coaches of the Super Eagles have reportedly refused to travel to Marrakech for their next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) fixture, citing unpaid bonuses.

The development was disclosed on X by BBC Africa journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, who is currently in Morocco.

Nigeria, regarded as one of the standout teams at the ongoing tournament, has won all four of its matches and recorded the highest number of goals so far. The team is scheduled to face Algeria in the quarter-final clash of the 2025 AFCON on Saturday evening.

However, it is understood that bonuses for the four matches played have not been settled. The squad, led by coach Eric Chelle, defeated Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda in the group stage before recording a 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16.

In response to the unresolved payments, the players and technical crew have reportedly halted all travel and training plans.

Algeria dispatch DRC to set up ‘derby’ against Nigeria

    · Super Eagles begin training  for Saturday’s Q-Finals

Perennial campaigner, Fennecs of Algeria, has setup  a dream quarter-final fixture against three-time champions, the Super Eagles, after a late winner last night put  the North African side into the last eight of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Algeria substitute Adil Boulbina slammed home the  last-gasp winner a minute from the end of extra time to see his side overcome the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0  in their Round of 16th  encounter at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat.

Just as the round-of-16 tie was headed to a penalty shootout, Boulbina cut in off the left wing before unleashing a dipping shot that flew in, clipping the underside of the crossbar on the way in for a well-deserved  win  for  Algeria  who are seeking a third continental title  following  previous  success at home in 1990  and  in 2019 in Egypt.

Victory for Algeria means the  highly expected ‘grudge match’ between Nigeria  and Democratic Republic of Congo  following the outcome of their  last clash in the 2026  World Cup CAF Play-offs last November,  has been put into the cooler.

Algeria will now be up against Nigeria in their quarter-final tie in Marrakesh on Saturday.

Incidentally,  Nigeria and Algeria  are ‘old customers’ as  far as the AFCON  is concerned and  their upcoming quarter-final duel  in Marrakech is undoubtedly a  continental derby.

While Nigeria  beat Algeria 3-0  to win their maiden title in 1980 , the North Africans  also took their  first title  in 1990  with a 1-0  winner over their  West African arch-rivals. Altogether both  sides have met 22 times in the past  with Algeria notching 10 wins to Nigeria’s 9 while they  drew the three other encounters.

Mahrez sends Algeria into Africa Cup of Nations last-16

Riyad Mahrez scored a first half penalty as Algeria sealed their place in the knockout rounds of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso in their Group E clash in Rabat on Sunday.

Algeria have six points and will win the group as they cannot be overhauled by either Burkina Faso (3 points) or Sudan (3) following the third round of fixtures in the pool due to the head-to-head rule.

The Burkinabe meet Sudan in their final clash on Wednesday, while Algeria take on bottom side Equatorial Guinea, who are eliminated.

Algeria were awarded a penalty just past the 20-minute mark when Rayan Ait Nouri was felled in the box by Ismahila Ouedraogo, and Mahrez made no mistake as he sent Herve Koffi in the Burkina Faso goal the wrong way.

Mahrez extended his record as Algeria’s all-time leading scorer at the Cup of Nations with his ninth goal and is also the leading scorer in this edition so far having netted twice in the opening 3-0 win over Sudan.

The Burkinabe came close to an equaliser just before halftime when Pierre Kabore’s close-range header came back off the post and Algeria were able to scramble the ball to safety.

Koffi was busy in the Burkina Faso goal and saved from Mohamed Amoura, before Ibrahim Maza forced another good stop and then scuffed a shot wide of the target.

Luca Zidane, son of France great Zinedine, showed good reactions to keep out a Lassina Traore header late on as Burkina Faso came close to an equaliser.

Nigeria, Algeria meet on flights’ commencement

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo and the Algerian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mezoued Hosine have met to discuss the commencement of Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) arrangements between Nigeria and Algeria.

Ambassador Hosine expressed his country’s interest in launching air services connecting Algeria, Abuja, and Douala.

He requested the Minister’s intervention in ensuring that the necessary paperwork is accelerated by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to facilitate the commencement of the route, slated to begin on April 6, 2025

The proposed Algeria-Abuja-Douala route is expected to facilitate trade, tourism, and economic cooperation between the two nations and beyond.

The Minister while welcoming the initiative, commended Algeria’s efforts in strengthening aviation ties with Nigeria.

He pledged to hasten all necessary processes to ensure smooth implementation of the agreement, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to fostering bilateral cooperation in the aviation sector.

Keyamo in a statement in Abuja by his Media Aide, Tunde Moshood, said: “This development aligns with our broader vision to enhance Nigeria’s aviation connectivity with key international destinations.

“We will work closely with relevant agencies, particularly the NCAA, to ensure all required formalities are completed as swiftly as possible, this is an opportunity we’ve been waiting for, if we have to go to Cameroon, a neighbouring country that’s less than an hour flight, we have to fly to Togo first, possibly sleep over before coming to our neighbouring Cameroon; so this is a welcome development.”

The Minister assured the Ambassador of the country’s readiness to support the initiative, underscoring government’s commitment to improving air travel accessibility and reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a key aviation hub in Africa.
