    Marriage: Association advocates HIV/AIDS screening

    Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammad, the Chairman, People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Jigawa, has advised intending couples to go for HIV/AIDS screening before marriage.

    Muhammad gave the advice while speaking with newsmen in Dutse on Friday.

    He commended the Jigawa House of Assembly for passing a law making it compulsory for a man and woman to go for screening before marriage.

    The chairman said that the measure taken by government was to reduce the prevalence of the disease in the state.

    Muhammad said that their association was creating awareness to the people of the state in public places, including markets and motor parks, on how they can avoid contact with HIV/AIDs.

    He added that they were also using the media in the campaign against the spread of HIV/AIDs in the state.

    The chairman advised members of the public to go for screening with a view to knowing their status because HIV/AIDs don’t show on the face.

    Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of the association in the state, Hajiya Basira Yahaya, said that they have been encouraging women to go for antenatal through to enable them know their status.

    Basira also advised women to avoid using knives that cut other women especially during festivities or occasions at the processes of cutting onions, tomatoes or meat without sterilisation.

    NAHCON begins preparations for 2018 hajj- Chairman

    The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria(NAHCON) says it has commenced preparation for the 2018 Hajj.

    The Executive Chairman of NAHCON, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammad made the disclosure at an interactive session and dinner with members of the 2017 Hajj Media Team on Thursday in Makkah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

    Muhammad said that the commission had already sent a team, headed by the Consul General, to negotiate price of accommodation in Madinah to ensure that Nigerian pilgrims are lodged close to the  Prophet Mosque.

    ” To this end, the Commission has sent a delegation to Madina to prepare ground for the negotiation of a comprehensive package for pilgrims coming for the hajj next year and their stay in the holy city of Madina.”

    He said the commission and State Pilgrims Welfare Boards have also  started mapping out strategies and modalities to have a unified accommodation system in both Makkah and Madinah next year.

    The Chairman further stated that from next Hajj, the Commission would work to simplify information gathering, sharing and dissemination amongst the states and the National Media Team.

    The NAHCON boss thanked members of the Media Team for the way they carried out their assignment and urged the members to continue to verify the veracity of any information before going to press.

    He said that the ongoing transportation of pilgrims back home had been going on smoothly without any hitch so far, adding that no fewer than 14,000 pilgrims had been transported back to Nigeria.

    He implored all Nigerians to fervently pray for the country to overcome its present trying period and a resounding good health and wisdom for leaders, particularly President Muhammadu Buhari.

    Responding, the Chairman of the Media Team, Alhaji Ubale Musa commended NAHCON for its foresight in forming the Media Team to cover the just concluded exercise.

    Musa said that the inclusion  of competent journalists in the team had ensured adequate dissemination of information on the conduct exercise.

    Five Nigerian pilgrims die in Saudi Arabia

    The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) said on Tuesday that five Nigerian pilgrims have died since the beginning of the 2017 Hajj operation.

    The Executive Chairman of NAHCON, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammad, disclosed this during the 2017 Pre-Arafat meeting with stakeholders organised by the Commission in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

    Muhammad, however, did not disclose the names of the deceased, saying the Commission would first reach out to the families of the deceased before revealing their identify to the public.

    Similarly, the NAHCON chief said the Commission recorded one delivery and one miscarriage, assuring that it would continue to provide effective healthcare service to pilgrims.

    Muhammad vowed that no amount of threat, arm twisting, ill motivated criticisms and real or imaginary hurdles would deter the Commission from achieving its goals.

    He also called on all stakeholders to put all hands on deck to ensure a hitch free exercise.

    He said no one should rest on his oars until every pilgrim successfully carried out the hajj rites and safely returned to Nigeria.

    A total 81,200 Nigerian pilgrims would join their Muslims counterparts from around the world to perform this year’s hajj.

    Over two million pilgrims from around the world and Saudi Arabia have assembled in Mecca to perform the 2017 hajj rites beginning from Wednesday, according to a local Newspaper, The Saudi Gazette.

    Afterwards, the pilgrims would move to Muna where they will stay for five days during which they will throw pebbles at Satan.

    Abdullahi Wamakko buried in Sokoto

    A member of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammad, (APC-Kware/Wamakko), who died on Friday has been buried in Sokoto.

    Muhammad aged 50 years, died in Abuja, after a brief illness.

    The Chief of Imam of Wamakko, Alhaji Shehu Ardo, led the funeral prayer conducted at the Wamakko Central Mosque, Wamakko.

    The prayer was attended by Governor Aminu Tambuwal, his predecessor, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko, the National Vice-Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), North-West, Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir, members of the National and State Assemblies and the state executive council members.

    Until his death, Muhammad was the Vice-Chairman, House Committee on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA).

    He was the Yariman Wamakko and has been representing his constituency in the lower legislative chamber since 2011.

    Muhammad, a younger brother to Senator Aliyu Wamakko (APC-Sokoto State), is survived by a wife and five children.

    House of Rep loses another member

    A member of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammad, (APC-Kware/Wamakko) is dead.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Muhammad, who was born in January 1967, died on Friday at an Abuja Hospital after a brief illness.

    Until his death, he was the Vice Chairman of the House Committee on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency(FERMA), apart from membership of several House Committees.

    The Chairman of Wamakko Local Government, Alhaji Ahmed Kalambaina, said that the remains of the deceased would be buried in his home town, Wamakko, later on Friday.

    The deceased who was a younger brother to the former governor of the state, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko is survived by a wife and five children.

    Hajj: Buhari’s driver to be rewarded for returning lost items

    The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), on Tuesday in Abuja, promised to reward President Muhammadu Buhari’s driver, Saidu Afaka, who returned lost items during the 2016 Hajj in Saudi Arabia.
    The Executive Chairman, NAHCON, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammad, made the disclosure while presenting the lost items to Shehu Barwa, Executive Secretary, Niger Pilgrims Welfare Board for onward conveyance to the owner.
    Muhammad said Saidu Afaka, found and returned to the commission a bag containing 400 dollars, N60,370 and 149 Saudi Riyals and a cell phone belonging to Adamu Umar, a Niger State pilgrim.
    According to him, in 2016, a pilgrim from Kaduna State, Saidu Afaka, found a wallet or purse and he brought it to our office in Makkah.
    “And I directed the Audit Department to keep and trace the owner, and from our records it showed that the owner is Umar Adamu, a pilgrim with passport Number A07432103 from Niger.
    “It is my pleasure to handover the content of this lost and found item to the Executive Secretary, Niger State Pilgrims Welfare Board for onward conveyance to the owner,” Muhammad said.
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Afaka, who hails from Kaduna State, is a staff sergeant in Nigeria Army and a senior driver to President Muhammadu Buhari.
    The Chairman said the commission would honour him with a slot to travel for the 2017 hajj.
    “The commission will reward the pilgrim, who is a true Nigeria accordingly, and we will make sure he also join us in performing the 2017 hajj,” he said.
    The NAHCON boss, who commended Afaka, urged other faithful to emulate his sincerity and faithfulness which he described as marks of true Muslim. (NAN)
